BIDFORPOWER
Beforecharactergenerationstarts,each
playersecretlywritesdownthenumberof
characterpointstheyarewillingtobidfor
CoterieRanking.Oncethescoresare
revealed,charactersarerankedinauthority
basedontheirexpendituresandachainof
commandisformed,withthoseofhigher
rankhavingauthourityoverthoseoflower
rank.

Anytiesareresolvedbyasecondroundof
openbidding,thistimebasedonthe
numberofflawsthatthecharactersare
willingtotake.Oncealltiesarebroken,
assignrankingsasbefore.

Thehighestrankedcharacter,andonlythe
highestrankedcharacter,maytakethe
Inquisitorcareerandwillreceiveallthe
benefitsgrantedtothatcareer.Thesecond
highestrankedmaytaketheQuestioner
careeriftheydesire.Allothercharacters
areNovitiatesandhaveauthorityover
eachotherbasedupontheirfinalrankings.

THECOVOCATION(TroupeStylePlay)
InaConvocationcampaign,theplayerswill
havemultiplecharactersinanumberof
separateCoteriesequaltothenumberof

InquisitorialConvocation,witheachplayer
creatingasingleInquisitortoleadoneof
thecoteriesandNovitiatesfortheothers.

anInquisitorPCusingthenormalmethods.

ROGUEPRIVATEERS
Thecharactersarenotmembersofthe
Inquisitionandnoonemaytakethe
InquisitororQuestionerCareers.Theyare,
instead,RoguePrivateers,Adjudicators,
alienadventurers,ArchangelDeathSquads
orsomeothermixofcharactersworkingfor
oragainsttheEmperiumorjustlookingfor
adventureandquickCrosses.

Archangelsaretheultimatewarriorsandhave
extensiveknowledgeintheartsofwar.Theyareso
strongthattheymayaddtheirArchangelRanksto
anytestinvolvingStrengthandtheyaresotough
thattheyaddtheirranktotheirLifebloodtotal.

Archangelsaresobig(89tallonaverage)theymay
wieldnormaltwohandedweaponswithonehand
andweaponsbuiltspecificallyfortheirtwohanded
useaddtheirArchangelRanktodamage.

Theirsizeisadetriment,howeverwhenitcomesto
handlingnormalsizedobjectsandmovinginnormal,
humansizedconditions.

ARMYOFFICER
ArmyofficersleadthearmiesoftheEmperiuminthe
numerouswarsthatconstantlyeruptacrossthe
galaxy.Lowlevelofficers(Rank01)leadasingle
squad,higherranks(Rank23)willhaveanentire
platoonattheirdisposalwhilethoseatthepinnacle
ofcommand(Rank45)willcommandentire
battalionsor(atRank5+)armies.

Officersaremastersofstrategyandtacticsand
takingthelongviewofbattle.Theyareableto
requisitionmaterial,artilleryandairsupportfor
theircommand,althoughthedifficultyofthatis
entirelydependentonwhethertheyareonacritical
frontandhowtightthesupplylinesare.

ASSASSIN
Assassinsareadeptatmovingsilentlyandkilling
fromtheshadowswithblades,bullets,poisonsor
whateverelsecomestohand.Theyexcelinsneak
attacksandsnipingandcan,atGMsdiscretion,gain
aRankbonustotheirdamagerollswhendoingso.

Theirmethodsinvolvegatheringintelontheir
subjectfromvarious(butoftenseedy)sources,
circumventingsecuritymeasuresofalltypes,and
adoptingdisguisesthatallowthemtogetcloseto
thetarget.Theyarealsopatient,sometimeshiding
outinasinglespotfordaystoawaittheperfect
opportunitytostrike.

BOUNTYHUNTER
TheBountyHunterisamasterofgathering
informationandtrackingtheirpreythroughcivilized
areasaswellaswilderness.Oncetheylocatetheir
target,theyllusestealth,trapsandviolencetobring
themin,butthereputationofasuccessfulBounty
Hunterisoftenenoughtogaintheirsubmission.

Thesearenotthestandardsittingjudgesofthelocal
planetarycourts,buttravellingenforcersof
EmperialLaw.TheirJudgmentShipstravelfrom
planettoplanet,takingoverwheneverthelocal
authoritiesareunabletoresolvealegalmatteror
theAdjudicatorjudgesthattheyhavedoneso
inappropriately.

Adjudicatorsactasinvestigators,collecting
informationthroughinterviewsorinterrogationof
subjects,gatheringofevidenceanddeductive
reasoning.Theythenissueaverdictandeitherorder
thelocalauthouritiestocarryoutthesentenceordo

TheDarkAgebeingwhatitis,however,thereis
muchsuperstitionandmysticismmixedinwith
bonafidemedicalloreanditisstandardprocedure
forChirurgeonstouseprayer,incenseandritually
consecratedinstrumentswhileperforminghighly
complicatedneurosurgerytocastoutdemonsof
mentaldisease.

ChirurgeonsofRank2andhigherlearnthesecretsof
alchemyandbiochemistryandmaycreatepotions
andmedicines(butnotDevicesorCreations)using

ACourtierisalessernobleintheEmperium,often
livingintheshadowofolderandmorehighlyplaced
siblings.Theyfloatfromnoblecourttonoblecourt,

greatdealoftheirfamilysmoneycarousingand
gettingintotrouble.

Courtiersarewellversedincourtcustoms,dressand
etiquette.Theywillknowthelatestdancesandfads
andwillalsohaveanumberoflowerlevelcontacts
withtheseedierfolkthatprovidethemwithelicit
entertainment.Theyoftenhavesomepullwith
theselowerclasstypesduetotheirstationandfree
spendingways.

CUSTODIS
SincetheEmperiumconsidersreasoningcomputers
tobetoolsofthedevil,awholesubsectionof
humanityhasbeentaskedwithcollectingand
analyzingdata.TheCustodiiareskilledanalysts,
mathematiciansandstatisticians.Theyoftenhave

TheEmperiumoftensentencesprisonerstofightfor

thosewhomakeacareeroutofitandreplace

thetoolsoftheenemyarethebestweaponagainst

withWarpedOnesandaliens.TheInquisitionfrowns
uponthispractice,butrarelypunishesitifit
accomplishestheirgoals.Thosethatlearnsorcery,
however,orwielddemonicallypossessedartifacts

haveextensiveinformationnetworksandare
expertsatlyingandconningtheirwayintoplaces
theyshouldntbeandoutofthepunishmentsthey
sorichlydeserve.

MACHINEPRIEST
PriestsintheserviceofRaphael,theAngelof
KnowledgeandScience,theMachinePriestsarethe
solemastersofscienceandtechnology,particularly
augmentek,whichtheyreplacetheirweakfleshwith
apieceatatime.AstartingMachinePriestcharacter
willhaveanumberofAdvancementPointstospend
onimplantsequaltotheirRankx2(seepg.xx).

MachinePriestsarethekeepersandpractitionersof
themechanicalandalchemicalarts.Theymaycreate
DevicesandCreations(butnotMedicinesorPotions)

rulebook.TheyspeakTrinaryinadditiontotheir
otherlanguages.

NAVALOFFICER
NavalOfficersinaSpaceFleetexcelatcommand
andnavalstrategyandtactics.Theywillhaveagood
generalknowledgeoftheuseofallshipboard
systems,interstellarnavigation,damagecontrol
proceduresandZeroGmaneuveringaswell.Those
ofRank3+mayhavecommandofaship,whilethose
ofrank5+willlikelycommandawholefleet.

NEPHALIM/ANATHEMA

andsomeofthehigherrankingpriests(Rank3+)
knowthemoredangerousloreofdemonologyand
exorcism.Whilepriestsareoftengreatwarriors,
theyareexpectedtobeministersfirstandrarely
carrymorethanafewpersonalweaponsandrefuse
toweararmourasarule,preferringtorelyontheir
unswervingfaithtoprotectthem,instead.

QUESTIONER
Onceanovitiatehasprovenhisintelligence,his

Inquisitorintraining.

ThefirstandmostimportantskillaQuestioner
learnsisinterrogationinallitsforms.Thisincludes
methodsofinformationextractionandbasicmedical
knowledgetokeepthesubjectaliveforasmany
daysasittakestogeteverylastscrapoftruth.

RANGER
Hunters,trackersandscouts,Rangersareskilledat
survivalinthewilderness.Duringtimesofwar,they
areoftenhiredtoserveaspathfinders,usingtheir
stealthandkeensensestotrackenemymovement,
spyontheenemycampandambushunwarytroops.

RATING
TheOfficerclassmayruntheship,buttheRatings
keepitrunning.Ratingsoftenmovefrompostto
postduringdifferenttoursandbecomeskilledin
variousaspectsofstarshipoperation,repairand

WhilethelifeofaNobleorCourtierisfineformost
ofthoseborntoprivilege,therearethosewithsuch
alustfordangerandexcitementthattheyarea
constantsourceoftroubleforpolitesociety.The
Emperiummakesfineuseofthesedangerseeking
upstartsbygivingthemLettersofMarqueandthe
titleofRoguePrivateer.

RoguePrivateersaregivenchargetofightthe
enemiesoftheEmperiumatwill,raidingtheirships
andplanetsandkeepingthespoils(witha
percentageofthetakegoingtotheEmperium,of
course).Enemy,inthiscase,typicallymeansanyone
outsideofEmperialjurisdiction,soalienand
unalignedorindependenthumanworldsandfleets
areallfairgame.

Sometimes,however,thecannyRoguePrivateerwill
seeopportunityinactuallydealingwiththenon
Emperialstheymeet(and,indeed,willoftenemploy
them)andwillsetuptradeagreementsfor
technologyandinformationexchange.Theyare
masternegotiatorsandoftensilvertonguedconmen
toboot,abletomakeoutlikebanditswhile
convincingtheothersidethattheygotthebetter
endofthebargain!TheEmperialauthouritiesfrown
uponthesesortsofdealingswithaliensandforeign
governments,buttypicallydonothingiftheybenefit
sufficientlyfromit.

ARoguePrivateerwillhaveashipofatleastFrigate
sizewithsufficientweaponsandcargospacetoface
thedangersofthefrontiersandbringbackthespoils
ofwar.HigherrankedRoguePrivateers(3+)willhave
multipleshipsandpossibly(at5+)anentirefleet.
Theywillhaveeitheradecentgraspofspacefleet
tactics(fromapreviouscareerlikeNavalOfficer)or
hiresomeoneelsewhodoes.

SISTEROFST.MICHAEL
WomencannotjointhepriesthoodintheEmperium,
butmayjoinnunnerieswheretheyprovidemedical
andsometimestechnicalsupportservicesforthe
clergy.Nunsaretypicallyunadventurousandrarely
leavetheabbeyorshiptheyareassignedto.

Oneorderofnuns,however,servesaverydifferent
role.TheSisterhoodofSaintMichaelisamilitant

orderofbattlenunsdedicatedtotheArchangelof
War.Theyserveasthepersonalguardofhigh
rankingpriestsandchurchofficialsandasfrontline
crusadersinholywars.Theyarewelltrainedinall
formsofcombatandequippedwiththelatestin
armourandweaponsprovidedbytheMachine
Priests.

Sisterswhoforsweartheuseoffirearms(Flaw:Vow)
anduseonlymeleeweaponsincombatare
especiallybelovedofMichaelandaregivenspecial
favourinhissight.Onceperbattletheymayturna
RegularSuccessintoaMightySuccessoraMighty
SuccessintoaLegendarySuccesswithoutusingany
HeroPoints.

SLAVE
TheEmperiumlongagoabandonedthesofter
philosophyofcriminalrehabilitationinfavourofthe
muchmorecosteffectivechoicesofexecutionand
slavery.Apersoncanbecomeaslaveinanumberof
ways.

First,topayoffadebt,apersoncanenterintoa
periodofindenturedservitudeinwhichthey
becomethepropertyoftheirdebtholder.Oftenthis
willbesomeonewhothedebtorconvincestobuy
theirdebtinordertoavoidbecomingtheproperty
ofsomeoneelsewhoismuchcrueler.

Criminalsareoftensoldintoslaveryaspartoftheir
sentence.Nonviolentoffendersoftenbecome
indenturedservantswhileviolentoffenderswho
avoidexecutionareoftensoldtogladiatorialarenas.

Aliensandpirateshavetheirownviewsonthe
subjectofslavery,ofcourse,andtherearemany
otherwiseupstandingEmperialCitizenswhofall
victimtoanalienorpirateslaveraidandtoil
hopelesslyonsomeGodforsakenfrontieroralien
worldfortherestoftheirshort,miserablelives.

Slaveswillhaveanarrowsetofskillsbaseduponthe
jobgiventhembytheircaptors.Sotheycanbe
miners,servingwenches,orwhateverelsetheplayer
andtheGMdeterminethecharacterwasutilized
for.Theywillalsohavegreatskillingrovelingto
obtainsmallfavoursoravoidpunishment,hiding
fromthewrathoftheirownersandsmallscaletheft
toobtainessentialsthatwouldbeotherwise
unobtainable.Slavesalsolearntobeverygood
listenersandareafountofknowledgeonthe

secretsoftheirowners,whoconsiderthemsucha
nonthreatthattheyspeakfreelyintheirpresence.

SOLDIER
TheEmperiumisalwaysfightingawarsomewhere
andthosewarsrequireamassivenumberof
soldiers,whoareraisedbyforcingplanetstotithea
setnumberofyoungpeopleeachyearforactive
service.

Soldiersaretrainedinbasiccombattactics,survival
andpersonalequipmentmaintenance.Soldierswho
surviveafewbattlesmightfindthemselves
promotedtoNCOstatus(rank3+)whichgivesthem
minorrequisitioningpowertocallinartillery,air
supportandmaterialresupplyathalftheirRank.

SORCERER
Therearethosewhodesirepersonalpoweraboveall
elseandarewillingtodealwiththedeviltogetit.
Theirmotivationsaremany,buttheendresultisthe
same,theslowcorruptionofthebody,mindand
soul.

MostSorcerersarediabolistswhoseektobring
downthekingdomofheavenandreplaceitwitha
kingdomofhell.Theyarehuntedrelentlesslyinthe
Emperiumandtorturedfordaysbeforebeingputto
thetorch.

SomeSorcerors,however,aresimplycurious
academicsthirstingforknowledge,ordecadent
courtierslookingforexcitementintheforbidden.
Theytooaretorturedfordaysandthenputtothe
torch.TheEmperiumhasnotolerancefortheworks
oftheDevil,howeverinnocentthepractitioners
intent.

Sorcerersresearchforbiddentombsofarcane
knowledgeormakepactswithdemonstolearn
WordsofPowerthatcanshaperealityitself.You
mayusetheSorceryRulesfoundinChapter8ofthe

THEWARPEDONES
Therearethoseexposedtoradiation,livingina
pollutedenvironment,orinheritingbadgenes,who
displaythestigmaofmutation.TheWarpedare
lookeddownuponintheEmperiumandtypically
form,anunderclassofsocietyatbest,anda
hereditaryslaveclasswithnorightswhatsoeverat
worst.

SomeWarpedOnesavoidslaverybybecoming
gladiators,ventingtheirrageagainstcruelfateinthe
bloodlustofcombat.MostendupasLowlives,living
intheworstpartsofcities,oreveninthesewers,
wheretheybarterinformationandblackmarket
goods.Agoodmanybecomediabolists,butarare
fewwhoarenttoomarkedandwhohaveuseful
abilitiesmightfindserviceinthecoterieofamore

amongstmortalmenistopossessoneofthem.This

Outsideofexorcism,thereisonlyoneotheroption
