WHAT THEYRE SAYING ...

A MESSAGE FROM THE TOWN MAYOR

Welcome to the Town of Loomis.
The Town of Loomis is a small but
vibrant and progressive community,
with varied businesses, recreational
opportunities, excellent schools, and
a wonderful sense of involvement for
the people in the community.
We take great pride in our small
town atmosphere and the many benefits that come from knowing our
neighbors, and the unique opportunities it provides for our families. Our
Grammar Schools and High School
are ranked among the best in the
State, and we are recognized not
only scholastically, but Del Oro High
School is the defending State Football Champion.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAMBER PRESIDENT

My husband and I, with kids in tow, relocated to the Loomis Basin from Southern
California in 1994. Not long after discovering the local lifestyle and sense of community afforded those living here, my husband
penned the song Wheres Loomis? People may have heard about Loomis but were
not sure where this gem was to be found.
Fast forward to 2016 Loomis has maintained the rural lifestyle we all enjoy and out
tight-knit community is even stronger today.
The difference today is that the Loomis Basin
is regarded as a true asset of Placer County,
no longer unknown but envied. Our homes
are highly sought after by those wanting to
move to Loomis, Penryn or Newcastle to experience our way of life, our schools and our
small-town environment. New businesses
are clamoring to open their doors within our
community to experience our entrepreneurial environment, and, I must mention, the
tourists.
Yes, I said tourists. Loomis has become a
designation. Tourists arrive on buses, motorcycles, bikes, cars and limousines. They
come to experience our small-town Main
Street and its many offerings, including
restaurants, shopping, wine tasting, breweries, events and locally grown produce.

2017 will bring about our long-awaited

downtown street and sidewalk improvements, which will enhance the walkability
of our Main Street area. Our mural program
will be completed with a Historical Walking
Tour preserving our local agricultural heritage. The Chamber will be launching new
incentives and programs to support our
Loomis Basin businesses through continued growth and prosperity.
Though the question of Wheres Loomis? has been answered, and we have been
found, our local Loomis Basin businesses
are the heart of our community. Time after
time, these businesses step up to support
our schools, athletic teams, churches, community events and charitable organizations.
Our goal at the Chamber is connecting business to businesses within the Loomis Basin.
We are here to work hard for our members
and provide unwavering support while enhancing the Loomis Basin community, the
place we call home.

I was born and raised in Loomis, and

Im proud to be the third generation
of my family to live here. Like many
others of my time, I was raised on a
local fruit ranch, working with my family to raise pears, peaches, and plums.
Weve seen a great deal of change
in the Loomis landscape, with the
ranches giving way to houses, new
businesses, and bringing people to
the community.
Our Town has consciously chosen
to keep our rural way of life, as communities around us have grown into
large cities. With well planned, logical growth that will benefit all the citizens of Loomis, we will maintain our
unique small Town charm and appeal.
Loomis is a wonderful place to live,
work, raise your families, and create
memories for a lifetime. As our Town
motto says, A small town is like a
large family.
Welcome to Loomis,

Patricia Green

HISTORY OF LOOMIS

TOWN INCORPORATED IN 1984

ince it was founded in 1850, Loomis has like its name

undergone many changes but it has not outgrown its
small-town charm. Known previously as Pine Grove, Placer and Smithville, the name was changed to Loomis in
1890. When it was incorporated as the Town of Loomis in December 1984, the community not only preserved its name but
also its unique character.
Like much of Northern California, settlers were bit by the gold
bug when the precious metal was discovered in the American
River in El Dorado Countys Coloma in January 1848. Closer to
Loomis, streams and outlets of the American River also proved
to hold golden nuggets: Horseshoe Bar and Rattlesnake Bar are
just two of the places where local prospectors plied their trade.
When the Gold Rush finally died down, settlers turned to agriculture. The Loomis Basins Mediterranean climate proved ideal
for fruit ranching. Plums, peaches, pears, cherries and other fruit
were soon being shipped out of packing sheds to East Coast
markets and other states in between. At first, blocks of ice kept
rail cars and their precious cargo cool as they crossed the country. Later, refrigerated cars provided reliable and steady cool
temperatures.

much of its fruit-packing appearance and with Blue Goose Produce that to this day sells fruits and vegetables from some of
the areas historic farms. Even the Popie Wines tasting room
in the Blue Goose recalls vineyards planted in the early days of
Loomis, and Sarah Whitcomb Antiques patrons can find items
from the towns earlier days.

Now, only two of the original 14 fruit packing sheds remain. Both At High Hand, the sheds are packed with a nursery, wine tasting,

Since 2004, Alpacas All Around has been breeding and raising
alpacas for soft and warm wool, called fleece. The Petersens
also offer alpaca sales and breeding services from their full Peruvian alpaca bloodlines.
Farm visits for groups and individuals include feeding the alpacas, touring the farm and learning about the alpaca lifestyle. Visitors can also shop for alpaca fleece products such as raw fleece,
natural and hand-dyed yarn and felted scarves, among other
goods.
Alpaca fleece, says Susan Petersen, is very warm, its very soft.
Its woven into yarns to make luxurious products like scarves,
hats and sweaters. Another characteristic is that alpaca fleece is
hypoallergenic, because it doesnt have lanolin in it, she says.
See for yourself during a visit at Alpacas All Around.

The Cowpoke Fall Gathering is the premier event

of the Cowpoke Foundation started in 1995 by
Bert and Carol Braun of Loomis. The foundations
mission is to preserve and promote the American
cowboy heritage.
Stamey said the Cowpoke Fall Gathering is unique.
The people who come there know what theyre
coming for and are ready to be entertained and they
really enjoy it, he said. The Blue Goose Event Center, a former fruit-packing shed and the site of the
annual festival, is a special performance locale, he
said. Its a very intimate and homey atmosphere.
Its really a funky, neat venue.

Ones that wont walk or wont run
The fighters and criers and diggers
And the ones that arent any fun
But the dust settles down to a
Friesian/warlander
To the eye one may call her mundane
but inside her lay strength like a tower
Which could be seen as a cowboys bane
Shed stare down the many farm workers
Not a soul could look her in the face
But then came the face that would match her
A young girl whod soon match her pace
Two pairs of brown eyes now students together
The horse learning as much as it taught
Both stubborn with undoubted determination
But an understanding soon found as they fought
The powerful hooves drove beneath them
A bay and a blonde with a cause
To push and to drive to all limits
That led to so many to pause
Each fight would soon bring understanding
Of traits different and one in the same
The girl who found her perfect partner
And the horse who found a spark to her flame
A Queen of pastures met a queen of the country
Both were spirited, quick-witted, and strong
This pair could carry the worlds many burdens
And protect anyone whod been wronged
Everyone had their judgments and remarks
But nothing could have stopped such a mighty creation
With rider and animal one in the same
No stronger love than in this combinatio

HIGH HAND CAFE

and youll get a variety of definitions and explanations. Scott Paris, owner of High Hand Nursery and Caf,
is setting personal goals in order to redefine what the community views as local.

thriving market.

About 10 years ago, High Hand Caf opened. Paris had no previous training in the

come more than Paris had planned.
Originally, Paris bought the empty shell
of a building that once was the historical
High Hand Fruit Sheds, in order to prove a
point. Paris construction company needed to purchase plants for a project he
was working on. The supplier he went to
refused to sell to Paris due to his lack of
a retail nursery. In a sense, it was out of
spite why Paris purchased the property
and opened the nursery in 2003. Since
then almost every aspect of the site has
be reconstructed; however, Paris kept the
High Hand name in order to preserve its
valuable history.
Since then High Hand has grown and continues to expand in its function and enjoyment. In addition to the beloved nursery,
also included on the grounds is a greenhouse, a landscaping construction business, art gallery, pottery show room, iron
shop, growing grounds, etc. The property is completely solar powered and has

line was, his caf has turned into one of
the most popular hangouts in Loomis with
its whimsical atmosphere and palatable
cuisine.
I dont think food is rocket science. It just
has to be good ingredients prepared well,
Paris said.
Now, people come from miles away in order to enjoy the delectable dishes off the
menu.
Its simple food: local, fresh and simply
prepared, Paris said.
In order to remove the blurred line that
runs between local and not, Paris documented the process from picking the produce to serving it on a plate and discovered that their average time was three to
four hours with 45 minutes on a good day.
It doesnt get more fresh and local than that.

wner Kenny Gowan came up with a

unique concept for his new Loomis
restaurant. Gowan takes the quality of the GastroPub and melds it with the
flavor of a Smokehouse. He wanted to be
certain that this restaurant was a place for
the community to gather.
Taking on the job of restoring an old caf,
Gowan used all local trade workers. The
locals that worked on this restaurant, take
immerse pride in the finished results.
states Gowan
GastroPub refers to a restautant that specializes in serving high-quality food. LBB
GastroPub and Smokehouse delivers quality with a unique twist of BBQ. The menu
ranges from Ribs of a Smokehouse to
specialty items like the Falafel Burger. The
diverse menu is sure to please even the
most sophisticated palate. I cannot wait
to come back and have the Smokin Nachos which are your standard nachos at a
new level. Smoked cheddar, with an added smoked chicken and pulled pork make
these nachos special.
Gowan, a fourth-generation Loomis resident, is hoping that the investment in the
town of Loomis will create a trend of revamping. This trend could create a hub of
business that will attract visitors to take a
detour from the highway.
After talking to Gowan, it is refreshing to
hear the pride of his town in regards to
the success of the Brewery and now this
restaurant. It is encouraging to see a town
stand behind local business people.

FRUIT PACKING TRADITION THRIVES IN LOOMIS

hristian and Kirsten Larsen, natives

of Denmark, were married in 1883. In
November 1901 the couple and their
four children Robert, Elanora, Alfred and
Edward moved to Loomis where they
bought their 40-acre ranch for $6,000, operating one of the earliest fruit ranches
in the area. The Larsen ranch, located off
Horseshoe Bar Road between Leak Lane
and Hansen Road, became Valley Vista
Orchard and teamed with plums, peaches, pears, cherries and nectarines.

This fruit basket pattern was chosen to feature
the original Poirier families mandarin fruit packing

motorcycles. They also have been involved in the
4-H community for many years, thus the corner

picked fruit was taken into the Loomis fruit
packing houses in the 1940s.

BERT AND
CAROL BRAUN
This unique barn quilt design was inspired by
the 47-year union of Bert and Carol Braun.

the California Poppy. Berts Wyoming roots are
represented by Steamboat, the Wyoming
bucking horse symbol. The quilt celebrates the
American West.

love and assistance to all of the community.
The church is one of the oldest churches in
Loomis, and it has a history of strong community
outreach.

7. THE RED ROAD

JUDY GRAYSON AND
JERRY BRUNNER
The owner, Judy Grayson, wanted the barn quilt
to reflect her Native American heritage. Native
Americans represented by the red road followed
the philosophy that the Creator teaches that we
must live a life of truth, humbleness, respect,
forgiveness, spirituality and honor Mother Nature
and all her creations.

tourists of Loomis, as well as local patrons, browse many decorated shop rooms for the perfect little something. However, this
is no ordinary antique shop.
The Sicotte family have added something special to the stereotypical consignment.
Emmas Horse and Buggy has increased gift lines and added jewelry, soaps, wine totes, wood art, and more in addition to vintage
and antique. Most of the antiques within the shop are brought in
on consignment. Anything from one of a kind and aged to newly
designed and modern can be found. Emmas will be increasing
their garden line just in time for the fresh spring season.
The Sicotte family has put their hearts into the new business.
Even their son will come in and help chalk paint some of the
pieces to sell. They also offer a large line of chalk paints for the
courageous consumer who wishes to give it a try at home.
Were just having fun, Sarah said.
The fun they are having is shared with visitors to the store. Need
a perfect gift or want to just stop and shop? Emmas Horse and
Buggy leaves customers with warm greetings and the most
unique gift for someone special.

FROM THE LOOMIS BASIN HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Amazing speeds. Unbeatable value.

Growers first started using fruit box labels in the 1880s. These colorful
labels were pasted onto wooden crates and shipped all over the country
for nearly 70 years. In the late 1950s labels were no longer used because
pre-printed boxes replaced the older wooden crates. The leftover labels
were gathered up by collectors, dealers and old orchard owners. Little
is known about the artists who produced vividly colored images for the
labels. Many of the artists were German immigrants.
