The city intends to grab up the hospital during the auction,
and – until a new buyer steps in – operate it as a public facility.
Currently, there is no public hospital in the city, and UMC,
located in close proximity to the Prince George’s County line,
remains the only major medical center in the Southeast area.
The Ward 8 area is also rife with a multitude of time worn
buildings and homes, and UMC’s own debilitated outward
appearance cries out for a facelift.
The facility, which was previously known as Greater
Southeast Community Hospital, has served the area since 1965.
SHA chairman Jim Rappaport said it was renamed “because of
a variety of problems and issues,” namely that the hospital had
lost its accreditation and was within months of closing before

Two years ago, it underwent a massive $15 million overhaul

Embassy did not help him secure food or medicine while in
prison.
Peter Erlinder, 62, said he had to sleep on a concrete floor
without a blanket and without assistance from the embassy
after his May 28 arrest in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital. The
Minnesota law professor thanked U.S. Secretary of State
Hillary Rodham Clinton for saying Rwanda shouldn’t arrest
lawyers but said embassy officials in Kigali and Nairobi
have not helped much.

respond to inquiries from The Associated Press. “My
government insisted that I take my medications from my
captors rather than bringing me medications directly,”
Erlinder told a news conference in Nairobi, his first public
comments since his arrest. “It was impossible for them to

to get my food and my medication from my captors.”
Erlinder did not outright say that he feared taking food
from Rwandan authorities, but that was the implication. He
added that it wasn’t clear to him that “my own embassy was
working in my interests.” He did not elaborate.
A Rwandan judge ruled Thursday that Erlinder, a lawyer
at the International Criminal Tribunal of Rwanda, should
be freed from prison on medical grounds. Erlinder said he
would soon go to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. He did not
explain his health problems and declined to comment on his
statements in a Rwandan court that he had attempted suicide
in prison.

In a few weeks, on July 4, Americans will celebrate our
national day of independence. But for African Americans that
day has always come with a tinge of bitter sweetness, because
on July 4, 1776, we were still slaves and far from free. It wasn’t
until Jan. 1, 1863, when the Emancipation Proclamation took
effect that America was officially a free nation. But even then
there was not full compliance.
In the current age of tweeting and texting, it is hard to
imagine that it took two-and-a-half years for word of Abraham
Lincoln’s 1863 Emancipation Proclamation to reach the last
group of remaining slaves in America. On June 19, 1865,
Union soldiers, led by Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger, finally made
it to Galveston, Texas, with news that the Civil War had ended
and that the slaves of Texas were free. Several explanations
have been offered as reasons for this delay, ranging from
inadequate communications technology to a deliberate attempt
to help plantation owners reap one last harvest by keeping their
slaves in the dark. But, when the news finally arrived, it was a

of slaves and slave owners can rejoice in America’s second

According to the Web site Juneteenth.com, the holiday

It is now the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration
of the ending of slavery in the United States. Celebrations,
featuring backyard barbecues, family gatherings and worship
services occur in most states. More than 30 states, led by Texas
in 1980, have established Juneteenth as a holiday or special day
of recognition. In 1997, the United States Congress officially
recognized “Juneteenth Independence Day” in America.
Interest in the celebration is growing. Rev. Ronald

liberties were denied to them.”
I urge all Americans to observe Juneteenth, not only as a day
of celebration, but as moment of appreciation, reconciliation
and reaffirmation of the truth that none of us are free until all of
us are free.

Giving Kagan a Second Thought

The nomination of Elena
Adrienne T. Kagan, the 50-year-old
Washington solicitor general, deserves
a much closer look when
her Senate confirmation hearings begin June 28. Americans,
particularly African Americans, cannot allow our judgment of
her slim record be clouded by a knee-jerk desire to see historic
President Barack Obama do well.
Kagan’s record includes questionable hiring practices while
dean of Harvard Law School, where she reportedly recruited
conservative professors while few women and minorities were
hired. Even her touted record of bolstering minority student
enrollment during her tenure has been challenged.
Her politically expedient stance not to fight restrictions on
late term abortions during the Clinton administration as well as
her appearance of support for executive power over individual
rights should give us pause. Criticism surrounding her reported
isolation in the elitist circles of Harvard Square, Hyde Park and
Washington raise doubts about her ability to provide justice
“for ordinary people,” as the president had sought.
Although my longtime friend, Harvard professor Charles
Ogletree, points out that Kagan chose to serve as the Charles
Hamilton Houston chair at Harvard, this is a symbolic gesture.
More substantial is her clerkship with venerable Supreme Court
Justice Thurgood Marshall.
Not only is Kagan’s inexperience as a judge troubling,
more curious is her lack of a judicial paper trail to vet properly
and fairly. The combination – inexperience and uncertainty
– are too big a gamble for a lifelong appointment of such a
young justice to the highest court in the land. This is a seminal
appointment that cannot be reversed.
Each time the presidential campaign season rolls around,
the Democrats scare the voters with the specter of an
ultraconservative court should a Republican candidate win.

President Obama was voted into office in part by some who
want to tip the scales of justice back to balance on the presently
right leaning Supreme Court bench.
The NAACP and other leading civil rights organizations
originally preferred that the first African-American president
nominate an African-American woman from a pool of qualified
candidates to add much needed diversity on the current
right-leaning Supreme Court bench. But the NAACP and the
National Action Network, under the leadership of the Rev. Al
Sharpton, were too quick to capitulate and throw their support
behind the Kagan nomination, which appears designed for easy
confirmation with conservatives.
Indeed, progressives and liberals are voicing their
discontent, saying it would be a shame if the court ends up
being more right of center after an Obama administration than
before he took office. This line of thinking begs the question
of whether the Republicans and conservatives are window
dressing with their lukewarm opposition of a nominee they
have previously lauded and may have picked themselves.
The general consensus is that Kagan is no firebrand
liberal to counter conservative Justice Antonin Scalia, nor an
intellectual heavyweight to counter Justice John G. Roberts.
In fact, she reportedly has an affinity for members of the
conservative Federalist Society, whose members now dominate
the Supreme Court. She has praised Justice Scalia, who, in
return, recently stated that he is glad that Kagan is not a judge.
The nomination of unknown and untested Elena Kagan raises
too many questions as to whether this Democratic president
will make good on his and his party’s promise for a nominee
who has a demonstrative commitment to civil rights and equal
justice for all to succeed retiring liberal Justice John Paul
Stevens.

can’t vouch for Arenas’ future behavior, but
if the Wizards were set on dumping him they
should’ve done so already. The past is the past.
Washington could eat Arenas’ contract but
that would be more for proving a point than
making a smart basketball decision. Holding
onto the controversial star might be in their
best interest. Arenas is still the best scorer on
the roster and his ability to play both point
and shooting guard makes him a vital piece in
Washington’s attempt to regain respectability.
PG: If the mission is to gain respectability,
keeping Arenas around is the last thing
Washington should do. The Wizards already
traded away two members of the “Big Three.”
So why would they keep the player that has
been the least productive during the past three
seasons? Sure, trading away Gil’s contract
may be very difficult. And eating the contract
by simply releasing him is a bold move to
make, but it’s been done before. The New
York Knicks reached a buy-out agreement with
troublesome star Stephon Marbury just two
seasons ago. They ended up eating nearly $20
million dollars in one season just because they
wanted him away from their new rebuilding
process. The Wizards may be able to do the
same thing by simply convincing Arenas
that he has a chance for a fresh career start
somewhere else in the league.

Chanté Moore: Bring Healthy Ladies Together, One City at a Time

Singer, songwriter and all around beauty Chanté Moore
recently visited Washington, D.C., to work up a sweat with the
ladies of Sporty Girl Fitness, a nutrition, exercise and fitness
organization founded by celebrity trainer Basheerah Ahmad.
The health and fitness organization’s motto is “helping you
get healthy – in mind, body and spirit,” and Ahmad took that
message to the District, along with several other major cities,
during the Sporty Girl Fitness Tour Part Two.
Thanks to her best friend, Moore has been an active
supporter of the program and its fitness tour for several years.
“My best friend Sheryl Cobb-Debrose is always involved in
something great. I have known her for about 15 years now and
a few years ago she asked me to support her by working out so
I said sure and we have been working out together ever since,”
said Moore. “I discovered that most times you will let yourself
down before you will let others down so having that support
system is important.”
While the physical fitness component definitely played a
strong role in Moore’s commitment to joining the organization,
she is also connected to the mental and spiritual unity Sporty
Girl Fitness promotes.
“Our pastor is also a member of Sporty Girl Fitness, and
she makes sure we are in church at all times. We call each other
and will quickly say, ‘I didn’t see you in church yesterday’,”
said Moore. “Also we are around each other all the time. It’s
important to surround yourself with people who have like
goals and like minds and you build a connection with everyone
in your circle.”
However, the celebrated vocalist said Sporty Girl Fitness
does not emulate a sorority.
“Sororities are a little more ‘clique-ish’ than this. It’s not
about saying, ‘You are like me so that’s why I’m cool with
you,’ it’s more about working with everyone from all walks
of life to better yourselves together,” said Moore. “It’s takes
a village to do everything not just raise a child. It should be a
team effort with everything you do in life and this organization
believes in that.”
The ladies of Sporty Girl Fitness are currently touring the
country, promoting sisterhood between women of all ages and
backgrounds. According to Moore, the program’s goal is to
“bring you together…keep the circle strong and growing.”
When Moore isn’t exercising or having group discussions
with ladies around the country, she’s in the studio working on
her gospel debut Changed and her next R&B release, which is
still untitled.
“Changed is not just lifting God up, that’s not me, but I’m
going to talk about how God is a part of us all and how we
should lift him up in our day-to-day lives. Each day it’s about
using those experiences that make me stronger,” said Moore.
“The other album is pretty fun. I haven’t titled it yet; it’s just
more of me – I might just call it ‘Moore of Me.’”

leaders, the victims’ relatives
are worried about the Second
Amendment Enforcement
Act—a proposed bill that
could make the purchase of
weapons easier.

and Sens. John McCain and
Jon Tester, the legislation
considerably raises the stakes

the District.
