Spotlight: Dr. Angela Lindner

by Madelyn Wilson and Beatrice Villanueva

Dr. Angela Lindner is an Associate Professor

in the Department of Environmental
Engineering in the Herbert Wertheim College
of Engineering. Dr. Lindner served as
Associate Dean of Student Affairs in UFs
College of Engineering from 2008-2015 and
is currently serving as Associate Provost for
Undergraduate Affairs!

Education: Challenges
Dr. Lindner earned a B.S. in Chemistry from
the College of Charleston, a M.S. in Chemical
Engineering from Texas A&M University, and
a Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental
Engineering from the University of Michigan.
One of the challenges Dr. Lindner faced
throughout engineering and graduate school
was the concept of the female engineer and
its negative connotations provided by her
academic environment. In short, several
professors within her department were
vigorously and vocally opposed to females
within the engineering classroom. Wanting
to transcend the damage caused by such
female engineering aversion, Dr. Lindner
discovered her calling for academia. In
choosing this profession, she wanted to
make movements not just as an engineer,
but as a female engineer.

Research: Environment!
From 1998 to about 2010, Dr. Lindner led
research that studied enzymatic
transformation of pollutants by
environmental bacteria. The purpose of this
research was to better understand how
environmental bacteria naturally transform
pollutants and how we can encourage
bacteria to more quickly degrade pollutants
to forms that pose no harm to the health of
humans, wildlife, and environment.

Dr. Angela Lindner

Thank you for continuing to inspire us every day, Dr.
Lindner! We look forward to continue learning from
you and joining you in standing for the female
engineer.

Advice
When asked to give advice to the aspiring
female engineers and the women of SWE,
Dr. Lindner readily provided three important
suggestions. First, do not run from the risk of
failure. When challenged with negative
experiences, gain confidence in your
resilience and capacity for kindness.
Second, never compare yourself with others
to measure your success. She urges women
to embrace their core values. Third, commit
to feeding the habit of thinking more deeply
than what our media today encourages.
Meditation, visual art, music, poetry,
literature, prayer, nurtured friendships, and
many other absorbing practices will lead you
more deeply into seeking what is true.
