Action Presentation

Big Actions vs. Everyday Actions
- talk about how we are seeing action all of the time, but perhaps we are not
noticing it
-it looks different in every grade; for example, in grade one bringing in a book
with chapters that is a fiction book, or in grade five parents tell teacher about a
discussion that happened at home
-big actions saving the world dont have to happen all of the time
-its ok to model and suggest action; it does not always have to come from the
Students; the goal is for it to come from the students, but we have to start
somewhere and set a good example with a variety of types of action
2. Why is Action Important?
Brainstorm with a group
3. The Ladder of Participation
- show Roger Harts ladder of participation (pg 64)
- have staff brainstorm ideas of how we take action at our school (write them on the
board)
-show the ladder and definitions of each rung
-place them on the ladder as a group
***We discovered that our school takes action mostly on rungs 3 and 4.
4. What we can do:
-most effective when it is student driven (with support from adults) or they are
involved in seeing it through - donating money and cans is the parents doing the
action; it highlights their powerlessness
-needs to be student driven - GENUINE CHOICE AND RESPONSIBILITY - they
will have more ownership over the action
-doesnt need to be grandiose - random acts of kindness are a great way to take
action
-need to know why they are taking action; for example why do we sing at the
OKeefe center
-local initiatives with an opportunity to see your action in action - needs to be in
their sphere of influence

-its really important for adults to be supportive and not prevent students from
taking risks to suggest making change the next time
-highlight the little actions and honour them - dont need an audience or grand
reward/extrinsic reward (colour day, pizza day, etc)
-not the grade 5 teachers jobs to teach action; this is the time that students
should be demonstrating what they have learned from JK.
-teachers need to demonstrate more examples of types of actions that are not
raising money; for example, writing letters, cleaning up the park, spreading the
word (through discussion, social media, posters, etc.)
-we need to teach action in an explicit lesson at the beginning
