Section 20-1.3 of ASME B30.20 provides guidelines for inspecting below-the-hook lifting devices. It states that end users should perform frequent visual inspections based on severity of use, and a designated person should perform periodic inspections also based on severity of use, with inspection records maintained. Devices should be removed from service if they show distortion, wear, loose or missing parts, cracks or other defects, which often require non-visual inspection methods to detect. New, altered or repaired devices should be load tested at 125% of rated capacity or less if specified by the manufacturer and inspected for defects after testing.

ASME B30.20 Below-The Hook Lifting Devices
Section 20-1.3: Sets guide lines for inspecting and testing Below-The-Hook Lifting Devices. Frequent visual inspections shall be made by the end user with frequency being based on severity of use. Periodic visual inspection shall be made by a designated person with frequency being based on severity of use. Records of periodic inspections or an external mark on the lifter as proof of inspection shall be maintained. Criteria for removal from service include such things as; distortion, wear, loose or missing guards/nameplates, loose bolts or fasteners, cracked or worn gears, pulleys, sheaves, sprockets, bearings, chains and belts, and or cracks. It is important to note that cracks generally can not be seen with the naked eye and require special testing such as but not limited to a magnetic particle inspection or a liquid penetrant inspection. New, altered, modified or repaired lifting devices should be tested before they are put into use. Test loads shall not be greater than 125% of the rated load unless recommended by the manufacturer. After load test the lifter should be visually inspected for deformation, cracks and or other defects. It is important to note that cracks generally can not be seen with the naked eye and require special testing such as but not limited to a magnetic particle inspection or a liquid penetrant inspection.
