How Tall Am I?
Concepts: Mathematical practices, Counting and Cardinality, Measurement and
Data

Brief description of the

lesson

This lesson is:

Rationale

Preschool (4-5 years old)

Classroom Number

Developmental domains: Fine motor skills (pencil grip), multi-step directions,

one-to-one correspondence counting
Students will be able to use forms of measurement and data to determine how
tall they are using rectangle blocks. Students will also be able to count by using
one-to-one correspondence to determine the number of rectangle blocks.
Students will create a graph and compare numbers with their classmates. The
teacher will introduce the lesson by asking the children what height means. The
teacher will read Lengthy by Syd Hoff. The teacher will split the children into
groups of 3, in which they will take turns measuring out how many blocks tall
they are. The class will then create a height chart (with the help of the teacher).
A new concept/activity
A continuation of the
All About Me theme
This lesson aligns with the overall theme of the academic year, which is All
About Me. It allows the children to explore their body height by measuring how
tall they are. This lesson will enhance the childrens awareness and competence
in mathematical practices.

Timeframe

Objective(s) of the
activity

Connections to
standards

The time frame of this lesion is 15-20 minutes (at most). It will take about 5
minutes to introduce the new vocabulary (height, tall, length) and read the story.
It will take about 2 minutes to split the students into groups of three and
distribute the blocks. It will take about 8 minutes to have the children measure
each others body length using the blocks. It will take about one minute for the
students to write down their number on a piece of paper. It will take about 5
minutes to create a height chart and have the children fill in the appropriate
amount for their body length and use comparison and contrast.
As a result of this learning experiment, the children will enhance their skill of
one-to-one correspondence in counting. Also, they will be able to represent a
number of objects with a written numeral. They will understand that the last
number name said tells the number of objects counted. They will be able to
identify whether the number of objects in one group is more, less, greater than,
fewer, and/or equal to the number of objects in another group. They will be able
to identify first and last related to order or position.
This activity will enable the child to develop awareness and competence in the
following area of the New York State Prekindergarten Foundation for the Common
Core:
Domain 5: Cognition and Knowledge of the World:
Mathematical Practices
a. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them
b. Reason abstractly and quantitatively
c. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others
d. Model with mathematics
e. Use appropriate tools strategically
f. Attend to precision
g. Look for and make use of structure
h. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

Counting and Cardinality
-Know number names and the count sequence
-Count to tell the number of objects
-Compare numbers

Language Objectives

sources of evidence for
childrens learning you will
use during the activity)
Technology inclusion (if
applicable)
Procedures (step by
step)

Measurement and Data

-Describe and compare measurable attributes
-Sort objects and count the number of objects in each category
The new vocabulary words that the children will learn are: height, length, tall,
comparison, graph, similarities and differences.
Lengthy by Syd Hoff
Rectangle Blocks (all the same size)
Paper
Pencil
Camera (to take pictures of the students for the height graph)
Anticipatory Set:
In order to introduce the children to this lesson, I will start off by seating the
children for circle time and introducing new vocabulary words such as height,
tall, length, compare, and contrast. I will then read the book Lengthy.

Instruction/Mini Lesson:
After reading the book, I will then ask the children how tall they think they are. I
will split the children into groups of 3 and spread them out around the classroom.

Learning Activity Plan for PreK-Grade 2

I will distribute rectangle blocks to each group. I will have the 1 children lay down
on his or her back. The other two children in the group will measure out this
childrens height by placing blocks in a line directly next to his or her body. Then,
the child laying down will stand up and count how many blocks tall he or she is.
The child will then write the number down on the piece of paper given to him or
her. This procedure will be done until all three children in each group have
measured how many blocks tall they are.
With the help of the two other teachers, I will take pictures while the children are
lying next to the blocks. I will print out these pictures and create a height chart
on a large piece of oak tag paper. The children will then assist in filling in how
many blocks tall they were on the height chart.
Independent Practice:
The children will work in groups of 3 to determine how tall they are. The children
will use independent practice when writing down their number (to remember)
and when filling in their section on the class height chart.
Closure:
After the lesson is complete, visually display the height chart in the classroom.
Discuss the concepts of compare, contrast, similar and different. Discuss the
varying heights in the classroom.
