Healthcare Experience: Medical Mission Trip 01/2013 168 hours FUMSIL, an NGO in the Dominican Republic, with Dr. Angel Wrote prescriptions, measured arms to determine how famished the children were, built beds, washed and painted schoolhouse walls, did laundry and provided fresh water for communities, did night rounds to feed children that had to be fed and administered medicine every few hours I yearned to change their lives. Instead, these starving kids transformed mine by emitting contagious joy in the midst of their suffering and living life to the fullest with what little they had. They exposed and erased my materialism and affirmed my dream of becoming a doctor. Devoting a week to the impoverished Dominican children gifted me ambition and drive that daily pervade my actions and thoughts. Altar Server at daily school mass Teacher Aide- Grade math tests, decorate several classrooms, and set up biology labs Employment During High School: Math and Latin Tutor before and after school 1 hr/week Kumon Learning Center Specialized Math Tutor 3 hrs/week (only in summer) Summer Activities: National Student Leadership Conference at Northwestern University 07/10/13-07/21/13 My imagination came alive as I was immersed in the medical field at this camp. Renowned surgeons delivering lectures reignited my love of learning. Listening to a medical student describe her experience in Ecuador, I dreamed of practicing medicine in another country. Performing mock clinical rounds forced me to illustrate my zeal for medicine. At this camp, I learned how to perform sutures, dissected a sheeps heart and a cows eye, worked in a team to address a public health issue and create a PSA about it, and developed my leadership skills with intensive workshops and exercises.
