Voltage Division in Series Circuits - GATE

Study Material in PDF

In these free GATE Notes, we deal with the concepts of Voltage Division in Series Circuit.
We will also discuss Current Division and Star to Delta Conversion. These concepts are
important to ace GATE EE, IES, BARC, BSNL, DRDO and other exams.
To successfully apply Voltage Division and Current Division, however, you need to know
KCL and KVL and Nodal and Mesh Analysis. So before you download these GATE Study
Material in PDF, make sure you have gone through previous articles in the series.

Voltage Division
Let us consider a voltage source E with resisters r1 and r2 in series across it as shown in
figure.

Example 1: Find the voltage across resistors r1 and r2 in the figure given below:

Solution:
Vr1 =

15(2.5)
2.5+5

= 5V

15(5)

Vr2 = 2.5+5 = 10V

Current Division
Let us now look at Current Division. Voltage Division works with Series circuits,
whereas we talk about Current Division in Parallel circuits.

below

Solution: Convert the star in to delta.
