Unit: Changing Through Time

ED 3501 2012

Lesson Duration: 45mins

OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General Learning Outcomes:

7. Emphasis: Students will create emphasis through the use of structural devices and strategies
4. Main Forms and Proportions: Students will modify forms by abstraction, distortion and other
transformations
68 Apply observation and inference skills to recognize and interpret patterns and to distinguish a
specific pattern from a group of similar patterns
Specific Learning Outcomes:

C. Transitions of colour, texture or tone relate the parts of a composition to a unified whole.
C. The metamorphosis and transformation of shapes can be depicted, one shape becomes another
1. Recognize evidence of recent human activity, and recognize evidence of animal activity in a natural
outdoor setting
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. Represent the same scene changing throughout each different season
2. Express knowledge that each animal has tracks exclusive to it and can be observed by people
3.

PROCEDURE
Introduction (_10_min.):
Hook/Attention Grabber: Can I get everyones attention here for our Art class.
So for the project we are going to draw the four different seasons. We are going to cut a paper into four different
squares. One each of the squares we are going to draw a forest in each different season, which will need to have at
least one tree and one animal. You will fold the paper in half sideways first. Hamburger if you call it that. Then you
will cut it in half on that line. Then when you have two halves of the same size you will put them together and fold
them up and down, like this. Then cut that in half so you should have 4 pictures of the same size. Then you will use
one of them and draw a tree without leaves and a line for the ground. [What season has the tree completely without
leaves?]. Once you got this, you will put on other page over that and trace it for each paper so you should have roughly
the same picture on all four pages. Now after that you can draw over each for every season. We have a tree in the
winter. What about in the summer? Fall? Spring (Growing)?
I dont want you to draw your animal yet, I want to you just focus on drawing the winter trees and the ground, then
tracing them. Then you can get started on drawing them in the different seasons.

LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE A

ED 3501 2012

Transition to Body:

Body (_30_min.):
Learning Activity #1: Drawing the Outline (Lesson 1)
Assessments/Differentiation:

Learning Activity #2: Drawing each Season

Assessments/Differentiation: Amount of detail required is dependent on the individual
So when you start drawing the details for each season, think about what makes that season different. Maybe theres still some snow
melting. The trees should look different, but stay in the same place. Think about how you can make someone see that picture and
know what season its in.

Learning Activity #3: Drawing the Animal

Assessments/Differentiation: This is an extra activity if students finish early
If you are done both the outline and the details for each season, you can choose an animal that would make sense in a forest. If you
are at this point and know what animal you want, you can draw it in for the spring, summer, and fall seasons. I dont want you to
draw it in winter yet and Ill explain why next week. Make sure that your animal is doing something different for each picture, it
should look like it has moved in the past year.

Closure ( _5_min.):
Transition To Next Lesson: Everyone please put your pictures away somewhere you can get them again, we will
continue this again another time. Once its all away and your tables have been cleared off you can get ready for skating
