Adems de las formas usuales para adquirir un vocabulario ms extenso en una lengua fornea, como
pueden ser la lectura, la conversacin, el uso de diccionarios o los ejercicios tediosos en libros de texto, existe
otra muy agradable, que permite aadir palabras por referencia o comparacin.
Esto es posible y muy fcil en ingls. Veamos por qu. El ingls y el espaol son lenguas indoeuropeas. El
primero pertenece a la familia germnica, en tanto que la del nuestro es la itlica. Estas familias y otras ms
tienen una misma raz, que se remonta a muchos siglos. Por ejemplo, es fcil apreciar el origen comn de las
palabras madre (espaol), mother (ingls), Mutter (alemn), matr (ruso) o mre (francs). Pero, dnde
est ese vnculo en patria (espaol), fatherland (ingls) y rodina (ruso)? O en muesca (espaol), notch
(ingls), Kerbe (alemn) y entalhe (portugus)? Ya vemos que ni siquiera entre vocablos de idiomas
pertenecientes a una misma familia (espaol, francs y portugus o ingls y alemn) existe la posibilidad de
establecer siempre una relacin clara.
Sin embargo, no hay que asustarse. No nos dedicaremos aqu a un estudio profundo de la lexicologa para
desentraar los lazos comunes que puedan existir entre los idiomas. Para nuestro propsito, nos bastar
conocer una buena parte de los innumerables vocablos ingleses que se han formado a partir del latn y el
griego, fundamentalmente.
Como sucede con todas las lenguas, en diferentes pocas, el ingls ha tomado prestado de otros idiomas. En
algunos casos, estas palabras se utilizaron en su momento para el nivel lingstico cientco, pues era normal
emplear el latn y el griego para precisar trminos. En otros, los estamentos sociales acomodados recurrieron
a palabras extranjeras que, supuestamente, daban ms elegancia a su habla. En denitiva, era una manera
de diferenciarse del vulgo, que slo saba el ingls corriente.
Pero esas palabras, que en un principio fueron patrimonio exclusivo de la elite cientca o social, forman parte
ahora de la riqueza lingstica general. Son usadas por todos en cualquier situacin. Es como cuando, en
espaol, utilizamos la palabra mariscal sin saber que procede del vocablo alemn Marschall o decimos
tranquilamente bar, olvidando que tiene origen ingls.
Pues lo mismo sucede en este idioma con los trminos derivados del latn y el griego, en muchas ocasiones
recibidos a travs del francs, el italiano o el espaol. No se trata de que usted memorice interminables
columnas de palabras. Simplemente, lalas y procure utilizar cada da varias de ellas.
