The role of ferrite in austenitic weld

metals
Consumeables contains a certain amount of ferrite to improve
resitance to hot cracking
Ferrite can dissolve elements which increase risk for hot
cracks i.e P and S
Weld metals starts solidify as ferrite, austenite is formed
during cooling to room temarature.
Austenite is more ductile than ferrite
Less likely to form brittle phases at elevated temp.
Ferrite is more resistant to stress corrosion and has a higher
yield strenght
