ENED 683
November 9, 2016

Dear Dr. Hartman,

Ive learned so much through this process! This was the first time I had ever taught an
annotated bibliography in this way. Up to this point, annotated bibliographies for this research
paper were completed simply to check that task off the box on our to-do list; it was not an
assignment that I spent much time on. Completing the assignment in more depth and using a
workshop approach has allowed me to learn a lot about my strategies for teaching this
assignment, my students, and the overall value of an annotated bibliography for this research
project.

I made several changes after my initial design submission. I added a few pieces of detail
to the rubric to make the purpose/audience and citation requirements more clear. My students
are still learning how to cite and what a proper citation looks like, so the details are still a bit
general. We use EasyBib to store all of their sources and help with formatting, and Ive found
that EasyBib is really struggling with MLA 8. Youll see that some of the citations look a bit
strange as students were working through the process of making sure all of their information is
correct.

I also added a self-assessment piece to help students think through the strengths and
weakness of their writing and so I could compare their perceptions to those of their peers and
my own ideas about their writing. They did not do a short reflection (as I planned in the design
phase), but focused on reflecting on their writing through the self-assessment instead. Im not
sure that this was as effective as I would have liked, and Im wondering if I should add back in a
reflective piece for the next time I teach this lesson.

I found that one of my biggest obstacles was encouraging students to read my
comments and apply them to their next draft. I didnt structure this as much as I should have;
students were able to view comments as I graded them, and I simply asked them to review
them before completing their annotated bibliography at the end of the research process. I feel
that if I had structured the viewing of comments and application of those comments in a better
way, students would have been more likely to make revisions before turning in the final
annotated bibliography. I appreciate any feedback you have on this!

Sincerely,

Roxanne

Writing Assignment Design

Rationale/Overview:
Research projects are typically met with a significant amount of dread in my English III
classroom. The research process is often overwhelming for students, and analyzing and
synthesizing a large amount of information from various sources is a task that requires critical
thinking skills, patience, and enough motivation to continue working through the hard parts. I
find that students often fall into two categories during extended research units: some students
struggle to find enough sources and information during the research process, and others find
information easily but realize in the end that they are still missing information or have sources
that are not actually valuable and/or pertinent to their research topic.

The annotated bibliography assignment that I have created asks students to analyze
their sources at the midpoint of the research process in order to help them understand what
information they have about their topic, what that information actually means, and what
information they will still need to include/find in order to write a well-developed research
paper. Students will also use this assignment to help them adjust their research questions if
needed (to narrow or broaden the topic). After the midpoint of their research, students will add
new sources to their annotated bibliographies to ensure that their research is on track. This
assignment will utilize a writers workshop classroom model where students will review their
peers work and give feedback on both the writing itself and the students conclusions about
the implications of their sources and their conclusions concerning the focus for the remainder
of their research.

Context:

The annotated bibliography assignment will be used in an English III class (high school
sophomores and juniors) as part of the graduation project research unit. Prior to this
assignment, students will have chosen a research topic, written a letter of intent to describe
their learning goals for the topic, and will have received instruction on finding sources, creating
citations for sources, and creating notecards for research notes. Students will begin the
annotated bibliography assignment at the first research check-in (when their research is
approximately halfway complete), will participate in a workshop with their peers to receive
feedback on their annotated bibliographies, and will finish the annotated bibliography at the
end of the research process (when all research notecards and sources are due). The writers
workshop portion will involve the completion of an I notice and I wonder style handout
which students will complete for their peers and then use to inform their revisions and
reflections. This assignment (not including the actual class time spent on research) will take
approximately four class periods (90 minutes blocks).

Common Core Standards
CCSS Writing 11-12:4 Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development,
organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience

CCSS Writing 11-12:5 Develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing,

rewriting, or trying a new approach, focusing on addressing what is most

significant for a specific purpose and audience.

CCSS Writing 11-12:7 Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects to answer a
question (including a self-generated question) or solve a problem; narrow or broaden the
inquiry when appropriate; synthesize multiple sources on the subject, demonstrating
understanding of the subject under investigation.

CCSS Writing 11-12:8 Gather relevant information from multiple authoritative print and digital
sources, using advanced searches effectively; assess the strengths and limitations of each
source in terms of the task, purpose, and audience; integrate information into the text
selectively to maintain the flow of ideas, avoiding plagiarism and over-reliance on any one
source and following a standard format for citation.

Annotated Bibliography Assignment Student Instructions

What is an annotated bibliography? An annotated bibliography is a list of the sources that
have been used for research along with a summary, evaluation, and/or reflection of each
source.

What does an annotated bibliography look like and what does it include? Check out this
page from the Purdue Online Writing Lab to see some sample annotated bibliographies. For this
research paper, your annotated bibliography will include:
A summary of the source (1-2 sentences)
A reflection of how the source fits into your research (2-4 sentences)
o Why/how is the information from the source important for your topic?
o How does this information help you answer your research question?
o Does the source lead you to any new ideas for researching your topic? (New
search ideas or source ideas? If so, describe/explain these ideas)

What is required and when is it due? - This assignment is divided into four parts.
Part One Create an annotated bibliography for the first five sources you found for your
research topic. Make sure to include both a summary and a reflection for each of the sources.
You will also write a short reflection (3-4 sentences) about what your preliminary thoughts are
in terms of what information you are missing, if you believe your topic should be
narrowed/broadened, etc Due 10/21

Part Two Participate in a writers workshop to give and receive feedback concerning the
annotated bibliography. Both the writing itself (the clarity, format, etc) of the annotations as
well as the content of the annotations will be reviewed. This part of the assignment will help
you revise your annotations and reflect on what these annotations show you about your
research thus far. The workshop will be held on 10/24.

Part Three After the workshop is complete, write a reflection on what you learned during the
workshop process as well as what your research plan is for the remainder of the research
process. What specific topics do you hope to search from this point forward? Do you need to
change (narrow or broaden) your research question? Reflections are due on 10/25.

Part Four After completing the remainder of your research, you will finish the annotated
bibliography by completing entries for additional sources you found after the writers
workshop. The full annotated bibliography will be submitted on 11/1.

How is this graded? Initial annotated bibliographies and workshop participation are
considered process work and will not be given a formal grade. The final submission for the
assignment will include the initial (partial) annotated bibliography, the workshop
handout/reflection, and the final annotated bibliography. This grade for the assignment will be
based on the following rubric:

Self-assess

Put comments in the appropriate column to describe

your work on the annotated bibliography.

I exceeded expectations
because I not only wrote in a
formal manner, I varied
sentence structure and revised
my writing to make sure that it
is appropriate for the
graduation project.

I followed all
requirements for MLA8 and
met expectations.

I think that I can

reflect more on the
value of each source in
order to meet
expectation.

Divide into groups of 4.

Take your computer (with annotated
bibliography open), a pen or pencil, and your
workshop handout.

Round 1
Effective Writing
Pass your computer and handout to the right.
In the Effective writing row, write I notice and I
wonder statements about the students annotated
bibliography.
This row assesses whether or not student writing is
appropriate for the task, purpose, and audience.
Process
4 minutes of silence to read and write comments
1 minute for the reviewer to ask clarifying questions
1 minute to write any follow-up comments

Sample Statements
*Your statements may or may not be the same.

sound very similar
- I notice that you give summaries for all
the sources except for one.
- I notice that you did not indent your
annotations.

I wonder
Ask questions that will
help the student revise
their work.
-I wonder if indenting the annotations
would make the format more aligned with
the instructions.
-I wonder if you should combine the two
sentences in your first annotation into one
sentence.
-I wonder if you capitalize the word _____
or not.
-I wonder if your style is appropriate for
the graduation project.
-I wonder if judges/readers will be
confused due to the lack of punctuation.

Round 2
Revision Process/Reflection
Pass your computer and handout to the right.
In the Revision Process/Revision row, write I
notice and I wonder statements about the students
annotated bibliography.
This row assess the students ability to determine what
new information is needed based on the information
theyve already found.
Process
4 minutes of silence to read and write comments
1 minute for the reviewer to ask clarifying questions
1 minute to write any follow-up comments

Sample Statements
*Your statements may or may not be the same.
I notice
Simply tell what you see
in their annotated
bibliography.
-I notice that you discuss how each of the
sources led to other sources and new
information.
-I notice that you summarize each source
in terms of its relation to your research
question.
-I notice that two of the sources have the
same summary and reflection.

I wonder
Ask questions that will
help the student revise
their work.
-I wonder if there is an alternative
perspective on the information from the
second source.
-I wonder if you need more information
about the topics on the 3rd and 4th
sources.

*If you would like to add statements to the eective writing

row, you may also do that during this time.

Round 3
Citations
Pass your computer and handout to the right.
In the Citations row, write I notice and I wonder
statements about the students annotated
bibliographiy.
This row assesses the students ability to follow rules for
MLA format.
Process
4 minutes of silence to read and write comments
1 minute for the reviewer to ask clarifying questions
1 minute to write any follow-up comments

Sample Statements
*Your statements may or may not be the same.
I notice
Simply tell what you see
in their annotated
bibliography.
-I notice that two of your sources are the
same.
-I notice that one of your sources is
formatted dierently than the others.
-I notice that one source has an article title
that seems to be the first line of the article
instead of the title.

I wonder
Ask questions that will
help the student revise
their work.
-I wonder if you should export your
sources from EasyBib again after deleting
the repetitive source.
-I wonder if you should double check the
article titles to ensure that they are
actually the title rather than information
from the source.

*If you would like to add statements to the any of the other rows,
you may also do that during this time.

Round 3
Evaluation of Sources
Pass your computer and handout to the right.
In the Evaluation of Sources row, write I notice
and I wonder statements about the students
annotated bibliography.
Process
4 minutes of silence to read and write comments

I notice
Simply tell what you see
in their annotated
bibliography.
-I notice that all of your sources are .org
and .edu.
-I notice that youve cited wikipedia.
-I notice that Yahoo Answers is one of your
sources.
-I notice that you wrote that one of your
sources did not provide relevant
information about your topic.

I wonder
Ask questions that will
help the student revise
their work.
-I wonder if blogs are acceptable sources of
this project.
-I wonder if you can find more credible
sources rather than .com cites
-I wonder if there are books you can find
about your source.
-I wonder if you could interview _____
about this topic.
-I wonder if you should delete the source
that did not provide information about
your research question.

*If you would like to add statements to the any of the other rows,
you may also do that during this time.

Question
Review the feedback that you were
given.
Ask any clarifying questions to the
reviewers.

REVISE
Based on the feedback that was
given to you during the
workshop, revise your annotated
bibliography. Submit it to
Canvas when you are finished

Self-assess
Complete the postworkshop selfassessment.
Turn in the workshop
handout.

Next Steps
Complete the workshop
reflection.
Finish research (50 notecards and
10 sources)
Complete the annotated
bibliography (add new sources)

The following pages are student samples from the annotated

bibliography and workshop assignment as well as my comments and
rubric.

The process for the assignment/feedback was as follows:

1. Students complete annotated bibliography and self-assessment
2. Students participated in workshop and revise their bibliographies.
They completed the second half of the self-assessment after
revising.
3. I gave students general/overall comments on their annotated
bibliographies to help them in the writing of the remainder of the
assignment. Students were given a participation grade for turning
in their work on time.
4. Students added to the annotated bibliography once their research
was complete and submitted a final version. I used the
assignment rubric to grade this submission.

expects from each and every one of us. It helps me answer my question of why Law
Enforcement is important because we can help follow the law by known the actual right
steps to do instead of the wrong ones. This source lead me to new ideas to research like
Female officers working to make Law Enforcement happen many people say that they are

important part of modern life. It provides details about how genetic recombination can
occur in all species. The information in this source has led me to research environmental
conditions that change favors.
What Is DNA Replication? Yourgenome.org, The Public Engagement Team, 25 Jan. 2016,
http://www.yourgenome.org/facts/what-is-dna-replication.
This source provided information about DNA and how it replicates. This information is
important because DNA is the foundation for all life. It tells our bodies what to do and
how to do it. This source led me to the research of different genetic diseases caused by
DNA mutations.
What Is Genetic Variation? Yourgenome.org, Public Engagement Team, 4 Feb. 2015, http://
www.yourgenome.org/facts/what-is-genetic-variation.
This source provided information about genetic variation and how it can occur. This
information is important because it is change in the DNA sequence of our genomes.
Changes can cause major differences such as reproductive habits or minor differences
that will most likely go unnoticed. Evolution relies on genetic variation. The information
in this source has led me to further research the causes for some DNA mutations.
