No. UAK 519C ferrying highly inflammable materials lost control along the Nairobi-Naivasha road, while enroute possibly to Uganda hitting oncoming vehicles and setting them ablaze. Nairobi, Kenya
The area where the accident took place is approximately 80
kilometres west of Nairobi, in an area known as Karai, along the busy Nairobi Nakuru highway. A total of 13 vehicles were affected by the incident. Following the accident, thirty-three people have so far been confirmed dead and six injured. Of the six injured 2 have been treated and discharged; three have been transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital and one to Nairobi Hospital, all with serious burns. So far, Government and other agencies have removed bodies from the scene and efforts are underway to transfer the bodies to Chiromo Mortuary for identification.
The government has already initiated an inquiry to establish
all the circumstances surrounding the accident. The road has since been cleared and traffic is flowing. This tragic incident has understandably left many shocked and deeply concerned. As this is a national tragedy we appeal to all Kenyans to remain sensitive to the feelings of families affected, and refrain from posting images of the scene on the social media. Investigations are now underway to ascertain further details concerning the cause of the accident including the substances being carried aboard the canter which are as of now unconfirmed. As we enter the festive season the government wishes to appeal to all road users to be cautious as they drive to various destinations to avoid accidents. Drivers are cautioned to observe traffic rules and regulations and to drive safely and responsibly. The government will continue to keep the press and the public informed of new developments as appropriate and as they occur. We recognize this is a sensitive issue and call for patience as we continue with investigations. Once again our thoughts and hearts are with the loved ones of all who have been affected by this tragedy. We also wish to thank all those who have participated in one way or the other in assisting the victims especially, Kenya Red Cross, Medical Personnel and general public.
