Group
15 Whole Group

Key vocabulary
Circle, rectangle, square
Opening (warmer activity + teacher introduction/demonstration of small
group activities)
Read letter from Pirate Pat asking for help to design a pirate ship.
Read a letter from Pirate Pat including instructions for designing a pirate ship.
Instructions include measurement and shapes.
Guided Experience (group working with the teacher)
LO: To draw and design a pirate ship Lower ability
Draw pirate ship and follow instructions given by Pirate Pat.
Children have blank paper and access to cut out paper shapes.
First measure 10 cubes, children draw a ship this long.
Group are given cut out shapes. The CA reads the instructions and they choose which shapes they need.
Glue them in places.
(CA support)

Independent Experience (small group activity 1)

LO: To draw and design a pirate ship high ability
Draw pirate ship and follow instructions given by Pirate Pat.

In pairs given a set of simple instructions to draw a pirate ship using measure and
shape.
Some instructions include measurement of 5cm and 10cm.

Independent Experience (small group activity 2) (student teacher)

Time: 5 Whole Group

The student teacher will ask the students to draw a pirate ship using cubes. She will
give them papers have 6 instructions about the number of cubes they will count and
build a rectangle with it depends on the measure in the different parts of the pirate ship.
Also, she will give them blank papers which they will draw their pirate ships on it. The
student teacher will model and explain how they build the cubes into a rectangle
depends on number of the part. Then she will model drawing around the cubes for that
part of the pirate ship. That to show them how they can do by themselves and complete
their own pirate ship. The instructions include the numbers of cubes which they will
draw around it all the parts in pirate ship. For example, they will draw a mast has 8
cubes long.
The student teacher will move through one instruction at a time e.g. Draw a mast that is
a rectangle that is 5 cubes long. Children will draw this shape before getting another
instruction.

Closing
Look at some different pirate ship pictures and identify the shapes they can see.
On a flipchart on interactive whiteboard the class will look at pictures of pirate ships and
find different shapes.

Assessment
They will assessment their selves in the math books. They will color their self-assessment circle
green if they did it correct but if they need some help to solve it (teacher help) they will color it
pink. (green for go and pink for think)
The teacher assessment the students by checking their final work and by listening to their
discussion while making their picture.
