Teaching with Technology 2

There are many challenges that teachers face when dealing with technology in a
classroom. Such examples include, teacher training, internet access, lack of sufficient items, and
more. It can be very difficult for an educator to keep track of all of these issues pertaining to
technology in a classroom. However, technology is being used more frequently in classrooms
now, than ever before.
Teachers incorporate technology in their lesson plans, whether its used for students to
watch and take notes from the teacher, surf the web, write essays, work on projects or
research. The goals of teachers who teach with technology are for students to improve student
learning with technology, promote the importance of technology, and to provide professional
development to achieve academic success. Technology used in classrooms can benefit students
by preparing them for their future in the work force. Many occupations are run by technology,
and it is always important to know how use a computer, none the less, know the basics.
Every school should have a computer lab in which, accessing computers can be easy.
There is usually a set schedule for when a certain classroom, or grade level is allowed to use
these computers. Often times, the amount of time isnt enough for a classroom to finish a
lesson. Students should be able to receive an assignment that requires the use of technology
tools, and be able to learn how to use them proficiently. Sharing a computer lab with different
grade levels, and classrooms make it difficult for students to learn the necessary tools. Teachers
learn to methodize, and work with the little computers they have in the classroom. If working
on a project, in which the students need to search the web, they would take turns using the
computers with a limit in time, print any work that would benefit their work, and switch with

the next group. This method takes a lot of useful time, but its the only way students can get
some extra computer time.
School districts dont always provide a budget sufficient for the technology needed in
classrooms. Not only would educators need the right technology, but they will also need
funding for installing the computers, technical support, equipment upgrades, maintenance, and
software. These are some of the things that need to be addressed when making a technology
plan. In the article, Critical Issue: Promoting Technology Use in Schools, it states Three
different types of funding must be considered: the initial investment to install the technology,
the annual operating costs of the technology, and the money to keep the system modern and
updated (Pelavin Research Institute, 1997). I believe this strategy can benefit many school
districts, and can help manage their funding effectively.
Often times, schools that purchase computers, purchase the least expensive products to
save some money. This might be a huge issue because it runs the risk of falling apart in a short
period of time, rather than buying a great product that can last a long time, which is what
matters. Schools need long lasting computers, and updated software to be able to keep up with
the latest technology. A computer that isnt updated can be useless to schools. Being able to
work with the latest software can be the difference between the skills they derive and the
knowledge they gain. It is really important. Teachers should allow their students to utilize
technology tools to learn.
Some solutions that can help fund for technology can be to admeasure from previous
budgets, fundraising or apply for grants, such as Donors Choose, Grants Watch or Digital Wish.

You can also apply for programs, such as Computers for Learning, or funding factory. Schools
can also reconsider textbook funds, educate and inform communities to gain support, and to
collaborate. An example would be, the Nevada school district. The Nevada school districts plan
to receive support will require collaboration of stakeholders. The stakeholders include, public
service media, corporations, foundations, higher education, as well as district administrators,
support staff, and teachers.
If students, teachers, and administrators make an effort to promote the use of
technology, and the importance, it can result in businesses becoming more involved. When
business leaders see that technology is needed in schools, to prepare students for future
employment, they may want to help make a difference, and fund for technology. They want to
see that us students, have the necessary skills needed for the work force in the future. When
schools acquire the funds needed, they should know how to secure the funds, and determine
how to spend it adequately according to their technology plan.
