The Causes of Korean people leaving Korea.

Some of friends or other classmates that many people in college are usually
talking about their futures whenever they meet and they seem worried about their
lives here in Korea. When people watch news, they might sometimes hear once a
week that people in Korea are leaving their country more than before. According to
the data from the Department of Homeland Security of USA, the percentage of
Korean people who have applied to immigration is almost 70.5%, and every year it
increases to double per a year now. (Han 4). Some are leaving their country to
elude unemployment, or others try to escape from it because they are just tired of
the competitive nature of Korean society. Furthermore, there are so many reasons
why people give up their lives in Korea and willingly choose to go overseas and
eventually try to get a job and live there.
Firstly, people feel sick of the realities of Korean society. One of the realities
is that there is an unstable job market and people experience this difficulty nowadays
more than the past. In other words, South Korea is currently undergoing job market
crisis. (The Korea Times 25). The government says they are setting up some
solutions, and companies try to give opportunities to young people; however, these
realities do not seem to have changed at all until this time. Besides, young people
want to leave because of the perceived inability to reach their potential within
Korea.(Yang 58). In Korea, Cronyism, nepotism, and academic elitism still exist
seriously. Unless students enter selective universities such as the so-called SKY,
they will be ignored and unrecognized no matter how skillful and professional they
may become.

Secondly, people feel disappointment in political system and politicians as

well. Many politicians are involved in the corruption and tampering. Especially,
nowadays in Korea, people can hear quite often that the president of Korea is now
mentioned very badly on the media and plus, the presidents approval rating has
fallen to its lowest level since coming to office in February 2013. (McGrath 5). She
gets involved in bribing, embezzlement, and dereliction of duty, however, she
remains silence and refuses to acknowledge her involvement of allegations even
though most citizens protest against her urging her to step down. Furthermore, Longtime regional alliances to political parties have caused conflicts over the past few
decades. It is one of the serious issues in South Korea. For example, it is mainly
divided into two parties. People who live in Gyeongsang-do prefer Senuri party which
is the ruling party at the present time and people who live in Jeonla-do prefer Minju
party. When people vote members of the congress, or president, they just consider
their preferring party or their region where they were born and raised and educated,
regardless of their election pledges and the nature of the parties. This localism is
causing a lot of political issues and many people feel sick of this reality of society.
Lastly, there exists gender inequality in many parts of life in Korea. It is still
harder for women to get jobs than men do, especially with age. In addition, the
gender gap in the Korea workplaces is still predominant; for example, women who
continue to earn less than men are less likely to progress their careers as far as
men. Women in Korea make on average 39 percent less than men. (Yonhapnews
22 ). Additionally, Women who quit their jobs due to marriage, pregnancy or
childbirth accounted for 20.3 percent of all housewives in 2013, up 4.1 percent from
a year earlier. (Yonhapnews 23). It is almost impossible for women to return to their
workplaces after a long career of their works. South Korea needs a series of

initiatives that will enable women to work up to their capabilities, even after they have
children. (Kwon 45). Whats more, society of Korea encourages superficiality in
women by teaching them their greatest property is physical beauty. Women,
compared to men, experience discrimination based on appearance, or height.
These discrimination cases of giving disadvantages to workers based on
appearance, which is irrelevant to performing certain jobs, are highly concentrated to
women, especially in the service industry. (Jeong 13). Thus women are encouraged
to get plastic surgery to get better jobs or to find better men.
For these reasons, people abandon their lives in Korea and try to go and get
jobs abroad and finally live there. However, if they are incompetent, and unprepared,
they will fail even in a foreign country. To be successful, they had better try hard and
overcome language barriers. Therefore, they should prepare themselves to
overcome difficulties in a foreign country if they want to leave Korea, so-called hellJoseon, and live abroad dodging these kinds of lives in Korea.
