Frese, Susan. "9 Early Warning Signs for Serial Killers." Crime Museum. N.p., 23 June 2014.
Web. 11 Nov. 2016.
Susan Frese, the author, discusses nine warning signs to look for in potential serial killer
in this article. The many red flags that she goes over can be antisocial behavior, arson,
animal torture, poor family life, substance abuse, voyeurism, intelligence, and
shiftlessness. These are only a few of many possible signs. This article is useful towards
my topic of nurture and its relation to serial killers because it gives useful insight on ways
nurture can from a serial killer. Child abuse and poor family life is nurture, and these are
also warning signs of a potential serial killer. This source is reputable because the article
is from an organization (.org) about crime.

Mathews, Tom. "Secrets of a Serial Killer." Newsweek 3 Feb. 1992: 44. LSU Libraries
Discovery. Web.
This article is written by Tom Mathews and it is all about the serial killer, Jeffrey
Dahmer. Mathews writes about how Jeffrey Dahmer pleaded guilty to murder and
pleaded to be insane. Jeffrey Dahmer who was a serial killer as an adult, grew up in a
poor family environment. He faced abuse as a child, such as sexual assault. This
information helps enhance my inquiry information because it gives an example of a serial

killer who was abused as a child. Jeffery Dahmer growing up with a bad family life
would be considered a serial killer formed by nurture. This article is credible because it is
from a newspaper.

Mitchell, Heather, and Michael Aamodt. "The Incidence of Child Abuse in Serial Killers."
Journal of Police and Criminal Psychology Mar. 2005: 40-47. LSU Libraries Discovery.
Web.
Mitchell and Aamodt, the authors of this magazine article, provide information on the
many types of child abuse that a person may face that has later grown up to become a
serial killer. Mitchell and Aamodt list physical abuse, sexual abuse, psychological abuse,
and neglect as the many forms of abuse that a child may face. This magazine article is
useful to my research paper because it gives me even more details about how nurture
forms a serial killer. It helps give me the opportunity to discuss the many forms of child
abuse that a serial killer may have experienced. This article is credible because it is from
a magazine.

Petersen, Marie Louise, and David P. Farrington. "Cruelty to Animals and Violence to People."
LSU Libraries Discovery. N.p., n.d. Web.
The authors of this article, Farrington and Petersen, discuss the topic of animal cruelty in
relation to violence. The two authors talk about how studies show that a child who
experiences abuse in a bad home environment, may lead to the child abusing animals,
which in turn leads to the child being violent to humans as an adult. The information
discussed in this article is related to my topic of serial killers formed by nurture because

many known serial killers were abusive towards animals as a child. This article is reliable
because it is a scholarly, peer-reviewed article from a text book.

"Review of Child Abuse and Crime." Rev. of Prologue to Violence: Child Abuse, Dissociation,
and Crime, by Harriet Fraad. (n.d.): n. pag. LSU Libraries Discovery. Web.
This article is a review of a book by Abby Stein. The author of the review, Harriet Fraad,
discusses that criminal acts committed during adulthood, come from events of abuse
during childhood. Fraad also says that humans automatically create a category of good
and bad and place people on those categories according to the acts that they commit. This
book review is vital to my inquiry project because it helps me get a focus of how serial
killers are viewed among society. It also gives more information on the abuse of children
and how social interaction between children and family members is very important. This
is a scholarly and reliable article because it is a review book.

"Serial Murder." FBI. Ed. Robert J. Morton. FBI, 21 May 2010. Web. 11 Nov. 2016.
This website contains reports and publications all about serial murder. It goes over the
fact that serial killing is very rare and there is a misconception of how it is portrayed on
television and movies than how it actually is in real life. The reports also discuss how the
causality of serial killings can be many things varying from nature to nurture. This site is
useful towards my research because it provides information regarding nurture and how
child abuse may contribute to violence in the future. This source is very reliable and
credible because it comes straight from the FBI website: the behavioral analysis unit and
the national center for the analysis of violent crime.

Simons, Cassandra L. "ANTISOCIAL PERSONALITY DISORDER IN SERIAL KILLERS:

THE THRILL OF THE KILL." LSU Libraries Discovery. N.p., n.d. Web.
Simons, the author of this article, discusses many motivations of serial killers throughout
the United States. She mentions that antisocial personality disorder and child abuse can
effect a person and cause them to commit such violent crimes in the future. Simons also
provides possible solutions to prevent the production of serial killers. This article is
relevant to my research because it helps me better understand how child abuse can lead to
violent acts, like serial killing. It enhances my topic about the nurture side of the nature
vs nurture debate. This is a scholarly article becomes it is an academic journal from a
text book.
