TheFordMotorCompany hadrecently publishedastudy ofthe


effectsofoilfiltrationsy stemsonenginewearandtheresultswereso
impressiv ethatby thetimey oucouldsay JackRobinsonwedretro
fittedourbugswithoilfilters.Butthemainproblemwasn'tdirtyoil
butnotenoughoil,especially athighrpm.Theinadequateamountof
lubricationreachingtheheadsresultedinex cessiv efriction,leading
tohightempsandfailedv alv etraincomponents,whichputy ouout
oftherace.
Auditingtheengineslubricationsy stemwefoundthatalloftheoil
forbothheadscamethroughasingle5mmdrilling.Intheory ,ahole
thatsizeshouldhav eprov idedmorethanenoughoil.Anditdid,but
only forthelefthandhead.Andthen,only atlowrpm.Whichwas
fineforastock1 200cc36hpengine,butwedalready bored&stroked
thatpuppy tonearly 1 7 00ccandwererunningthematov er5000
rpm.Butnotforv ery long.
V olkswagenwasawareofthev alv etrainlubricationproblemsand
addedadrilledoilchanneltotherockerarmsandalargermainoil
gallery onlaterenginesbutthebasicproblemwasthatnotenoughoil
wasreachingtheheads,especially theoneontherighthandsideof
theengine.

hairpinfracture.Whatweneededwasstillmoreoil...especially to
therighthandsideoftheengine.

channelsdrilledintotherockers.FittedwiththeFord/Subiety pe
swiv elfootadjusters,whichhav eamatchingoilchannel,wecould
nowprov idetheheadswithapprox imately eighttimesasmuchoilas
before.Headsranmuchcooler...whichmeanttheoilcomingfrom
theheadswashotter,sowehadtocomeupwithabetteroilcooling

scheme.Whichwedid,mov ingtheoilcooleroutsideoftheblower
housing.

modificationsdescribedabov e:1 00%filteredoil,increasedoil
v olumetotherighthandsideofthecrankcase,1 00%oilflowthrough
thelifters,groov edrockers&rockerarmshafts,andtheFord/Subie
ty peswiv elfootadjusters,whichactasspray bars.Someguy swould
modify therockersandsay they didntseeany improv ement.Others
wouldmodify theliftersandsay thesame.Butnotoneinathousand
incorporatedallofthemodifications.Andstilldont.Butits
interestingtonotethatV olkswagenincludedallofthemodifications
totheTy peIV engine.Infact,y oucanfindthemineverymodern
day engine.Whichisjustanotherofthoseunimportantdetails.
