Summary:
The 2012 US Department of Educations National Center for Education Statistics reported that
theater and dance in elementary schools went from 20 percent 10 years ago to only 4 and 3
percent in the 2009-10 school year. Additionally, only 42% of elementary schools hired drama/
theater instructors and 57% dance instructors. World Upside Down is creating interactive video
classes in Music, Visual Arts, Dance, and Theater which arts teachers can use to supplement
their existing arts curriculum and non-arts teachers can use to provide arts education for their
students if their school cannot afford to hire arts instructors . For the 2016-17 school year, WUD
will offer video classes free of charge, targeting elementary and middle schools who do not offer
dance or theater classes. WUD will provide professional development for teachers so that they
can use video classes and accompanying resources most effectively . NAE funds will be used to
create 5 dance video classes for this pilot program.
