From the producer....

TUNE YOUR KICKS
(01 Kick F#) Its important to tune your kicks - use
a plugin such as Nicky Romero Kick to make the
kicks tail the root note of the key you are writing
in. Be careful of the keys of A# - D# as there low
notes around 40HZ are too low for sound
systems. To alleviate this try tuning the kick to a
fifth above the root note. The relationship
between kick and bass is all important so make
sure you take your time to get this right as it will
pay dividends!
A BIT PITCHY
(Gladiator Lead) Pitch bend is very useful for
creating expressive professional lead parts. You
can use pitch bend to bring out certain notes and
add groove and expression to your performance.
Make sure when possible you keep the pitch
bend in key - check what the pitch bend settings
are in your synth. Often 1-3 semi-tomes is
enough.
KEEP IT REAL
(The Sun Drum Snare) Its good to mix up real
ddm sounds with the more electronic elements.
Tropical House is quite an organic sounding
genre. This isnt Minimal Techno! Its nice for the
listener to hear some authentic drums that sound

like they could even be a drummer. There are

great plugins put there to do this like FXpansions
BFD for example.
AFRO INFLUENCE
(The Sun Kalimba) Tropical House has a huge
influence from African and Caribbean music.
Thats why its cool to experiment with sounds like
marimbas, kalimbas and steel drums. Again this
helps bring out the organic vibe of the genre.
This often is employed through layering the real
sounds with synths.
SESSION WORK
(26 TH Music Loop BPM 100 BPM) For many of
the music loops, we recorded a guitarist. This is
one of the best ways of injecting a little bit of
originality and individuality to your music.
Collaborating with musicians is one of the most
fun aspects of music production and something
which is sadly becoming less and less due to the
wonderful tools we have at our disposal. Having
the creative input of somebody else can help take
your track into new territories.

From the producer....

CLICK YOUR FINGERS
(13 TH Clap) Claps and finger snaps are often
used in place of snares in Tropical House. Its
importunity that these sounds take care of the 2
and 4 beats. A good way to do this is to choose 3
sounds and place one in the middle, one hard left
and one hard right. Drag the hard left sound a
little early and the hard right a little late. This
creates that flammy clap sound.
FM BASS
(10 TH Bass Loop Gm 110BPM) FM bass is also
used in Tropical House. For a quick rough and
ready FM bass patch in Massive, choose a sine
wave and add the phase modulation with a fast
decaying envelope. Choose one octave as the
amount and you get that FM snap at the start
that helps the bass have presence in the mix.
GET EXCITED
(08 04 TH FX) A sure fire way to inject some
excitement and movement into your white noise
swooshes is to add a flanger with a slow rate. This
create that familiar whooshing sound that helps
ram up the excitement when added to a white
noise filter sweep.
We hope you enjoy these tips and tricks from the
Producer. Welcome to Sample Tools by Cr2!
