Evidence

Students will be able to understand what direction

planets rotate in and what they rotate around in a given
scenario.
By the end of the lesson, the student will be able to
determine what direction planets rotate in and what
they rotate around.
Students will distinguish between clockwise and counter
clockwise (DOK-Level 2)
Students will show their prior knowledge on rotation by
completing a guided discussion as pre-assessment
before being introduced to the lesson.

Critical thinking and problem solving. (21st Century)

Student A has a visual impairment. When modeling the

clockwise activity a peer may help the student do so, or
speak to them about their surroundings when they do it.
Text on the promethium board will be dark colored, and
student may be seated in the front of the class to better
see materials.

RATIONALE for
the Learning
Plan

Students will begin this lesson having minimal prior knowledge

on rotation. The students will recognize what rotation is when
an example is given. The students will begin to learn about the
direction in which planets rotate and what they rotate around.
The lesson below allows students to grasp this concept while
implementing PA standards.

Introduction

Activating Prior Knowledge

Ask students if they know what the word rotation
means.
Ask students if they knew that planets rotated.
Ask students if they know what direction planets rotate.
Ask students if they know what planets rotate around.
Hook/Lead-In/Anticipatory Set
Show students a video on rotation

Big Idea Statement

Planets in the solar system rotate in a clockwise
direction.
Essential Questions Statement
What is rotation?
What do the planets rotate around?
In what direction do the planets rotate?
Objective Statement
Students will demonstrate knowledge on what direction
planets rotate in.
Students will demonstrate knowledge on what planets
rotate around.
Transition
At the conclusion of the clock movement activity,
students will be asked to return to their seats. Once
students are sitting the instructor will ask them to rotate
clockwise to the seat by them. A large orange ball will be
in the middle of their desk formation to represent the
sun.

Lesson
Procedure

PreAssessment of Students
During a teacher initiated group discussion students will
demonstrate any prior knowledge they have on rotation.
Modeling of the Concept
Instructor will use promethium board to draw and outline
a model of the planets in the solar system around the
sun.
Guiding the Practice
Teacher will ask students to come up to the board and
draw arrows in the direction planets rotate.
Teacher will ask students follow up questions such as
What is that direction called?
Providing the Independent Practice
Students will draw a picture of planets rotating around
the sun. Students will then produce 3-5 sentences on
what is happening in the picture that they drew.
Transition
Before students transition from this subject to another,
instructor will ask students what was talked about in

science today.

Summary & Review of the Learning

Students will draw a picture that demonstrates planets
rotating around the sun.
Students will talk with the teacher independently on
what they learned.
Students will talk with the teacher independently on
what they liked and disliked about the lesson.
Homework/Assignments
Each student will write a paragraph how they think day
and night is made.

Spend more time on terminology

Students will disabilities may need a different example
instead of using arms for clock rotation
Students would benefit if lesson was extended
Students would benefit if more visuals were given.
