Ancient Babylon

(14 pts)

Babylon was the name of the main centre of agriculture in the region
known as Mesopotamia. The city of Babylon was considered the holy city of
the state Babylonia. Babylonia was comprised of two territories Sumer and
Akkad. The Sumerians were an ancient group of people that were known for
having one of the earliest forms of writing called cuneiform.
Hammurabi, the first king of the actual Babylonian Empire, once again
made Babylon the capital of the Empire in the region. Though the date of rule
for Hammurabi is unknown, it is believed that he inherited the throne from
his father, Sin-muballit, in 1792 B.C. and remained on the throne till his death
in 1750 B.C. At this time, the kingdom of Babylonia extended through nearly
the entire Mesopotamian region. Hammurabi was a successful ruler since he
was able to take all of the cities and territories south and north of Babylonia
under his rule. However, King Hammurabi was most famous for comprising a
set of laws for the people of Babylon to follow. These laws were known as the
Code of Hammurabi.
Some historians believe Babylon was the first modern Metropolis. It was
the biggest city in the region and became the home of many faithful followers
of Hammurabi. This wasnt just because Hammurabi believed in being a fair
ruler, but it was also because Babylon became the centre of agriculture in the
Middle East and beyond. Hammurabi helped to develop a process for
irrigation that would ensure the crops of the Fertile Crescent. The people
depended on the land for food, so successful irrigation methods were quite
important to the success of the crops in this otherwise arid region.
Once Hammurabi died, the city of Babylon was ruled by Nabopolassar in
the 7th century B.C. He was the first to begin the process of returning
Babylon to the empire it had been in the days of Hammurabi. Despite the
efforts of Nabopolassar to make Babylon a true empire again, he was unable
to achieve that glory. It was his son, Nebuchadnezzar II who would actually
make Babylon into a more popular and prosperous empire. He started this
process by making Babylon beautiful, so he created the Hanging Gardens of
Babylon which is now considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
After Nebuchadnezzar II had died, Babylon became a part of the Persian
Empire under the rule of Cyrus. This lasted until the ultimate takeover by the
most famous Macedonian King, Alexander the Great. Alexanders rule
extended into the East, making his empire the largest unified empire the
world has ever seen.
Today, the few remaining structures from the empirical period of
Babylonian rule exist. Located along the East bank of the Euphrates River,
which is where the main part of the city of Babylon was located, sit three
remaining structures. Throughout the years, war-torn Iraq has all but
destroyed what remains of one of the most intriguing and developed empires
the world has ever seen.

Each of the civilizations of the past contributed in a way or another to

enhance the cultural and technical side of human communities. They all had
achievements that gradually transformed the destiny of nations and turn
them into highly organised groups having in their hands more efficient means

that enabled them to develop a better capacity in the fight for survival and
therefore to lead a more comfortable life.
The Chinese ,for example, were the first to show to the others how to
combine intelligence and discipline in order to construct a dynamic society
able to offer its inhabitants prosperity and security. The Egyptians in their
turn managed to bring considerable improvements in the branches of
farming, architecture, medicine, writing and religion. Despite the hostile
environment where they evolved, they succeeded to impose their will-power
and perseverance so as to gain their neighbours respect and immortalize
their name in history.
As for the Babylonians ,they devoted their skills to further the spheres
of astronomy ,law-making, building, cattle breeding and land-working .The
Phoenicians , too, helped in accomplishing exceptional advances in matters
connected to ship-building, international trade and sailing across seas. When
the Greeks arrived, they promoted mathematics, philosophy and democracy.
They also gave a strong impetus to scientific research, rational thinking,
mythology and artistic creations. In their wisdom, they went as far as using
sport as a channel through which to consolidate peace and harmony among
tribes and races. The Romans, as well, devoted themselves to elevate the

construction of towns and public works, the laying of rules and political

A Life of Adventure
As a British child in India, I grew up in bright sunshine and with lots of space
around me. There was danger and excitement everywhere, and of course,
there were a lot rules. My brother and I had to be very careful. The sun was
so hot that our mother didnt let us play outside without our topees- or
jungle hats. All our clothes were very uncomfortable. We wanted to wear the
same clothes as the Indian children but we always had to look British.

Animals were a real problem. Our parents never let us go into the bathroom
on our own because snakes used to come in through a hole in the wall.
Because of rabies, our parents thought dogs were more dangerous than
snakes or scorpions and they didnt let us have a pet dog or even touch
someone elses dog. Ants were a problem too. There was so many that my

mother made us keep all our possessions on shelves. The ants used to eat
through everything they found on the ground- books, clothes and furniture!

I have some wonderful memories. In extremely hot weather our parents let us
sleep outside on the lawn. We loved it because the nights were so beautiful.
There were so many stars we could read by their light. The rain too was
wonderful. Sometimes it was so heavy that it came through the roof and we
used to go to bed with an umbrella over our heads! One year, my father gave
us permission to go with him on a tiger hunt. It was marvelous. We also
learned to ride ponies, elephants and camels!

I had so much fun that when I had to go to school in England, at the age of
ten, I found English life quite unexciting. I had nothing in common with the
other children at school. To me, India was a land of adventure, something I
wanted to go back to, something I would never forget.

The Roman Empire

Read the text carefully and do the activities.

The Roman Empire included most of what would now be considered Western
Europe. The latter was conquered by the Roman army, and a Roman way of life
was established in these countries. The main countries conquered were England,
Wales, Spain, France, Greece, the Middle East and the North African coastal
region.
In Romes early years, the state lived in fear of its more powerful neighbour,
Carthage. The Carthaginians were great traders in the Mediterranean Sea, and
as the Romans wanted to expand into this trading zone, clash was inevitable. In
264 BC, the Romans and the Carthaginians had their first war .In a series of three
wars, known as the Punic wars, the Romans defeated the Carthaginians
.However ,this took over 100 years to accomplish ,and the wars eventually
ended in 146 BC. In the second Punic War , the Romans lost several important
battles .-The most famous being against the Carthaginian general Hannibal.
However, by 146 BC, the Romans were strong enough to capture the city of
Carthage in north Africa. Carthage was burned to the ground, and all signs of the

city were destroyed as a sign that the power of the Carthaginians had
disappeared forever.
When Carthage surrendered, the Romans became the most powerful
Mediterranean state .The victory over the Carthaginians gave the Romans all the
opportunity they needed to expand their power In the Mediterranean. The more
powerful and wealthy the Romans became, the more able they were to further
expand their empire .They were not content with conquering the neighbouring
lands . They realized that land further away might also have riches that would
make Rome even wealthier. Hence their drive to conquer Western Europe .At the
height of its power, around AD150, Rome controlled the greatest empire ever
seen in Europe at that time. Many of the conquered nations benefited from the
Roman rule. Water supplies, housing, etc all appeared in Western Europe though
many fell into disuse after the Romans retreated back to Rome.
Ironically, the sheer size of the empire, which many marveled at, was also a
major reason for the collapse of the power of the Romans. The Romans had
great difficulty in maintaining power in all of their empire. Supplying their army
was a major problem as their lines of communications were stretched to the
limit. The power of the empire rested on the success of the Roman army. When
their success started to weaken, the empire could only start to collapse.

My parents have a business and I help them out sometimes when I have
free time. One of the jobs I do for them is to go to the bank and deposit the
takings. One day about a month ago, when I went to the bank, I got more
than I bargained for. I went as usual, with the money. I filled out a deposit slip
and stood in the queue reading my book I always take a book with me as I
get bored while waiting in long queues. When my turn finally came, I handed
the cashier the money and the deposit slip. She began counting the money
when all of a sudden she stopped and started looking very carefully at one of
the banknotes. She gave me a very odd look and took a small electrical
device out of a drawer and passed it over the note. Then, she spoke to one of
her colleagues and I heard the word police and became a little worried. It
turned out that the note was counterfeit and I had a lot of talking to do to
prove my innocence.

In many parts of the world, people do not hesitate to engage in activities
that do not comply with the basic patterns of ethics. The absence of legal
structure to control their business, together with the spread of poverty and
illiteracy in their land, encourage the birth of all sorts of unlawful practices.
This illegal means they handle in the context of total impunity enables
them to acquire vast fortune and hold immense influence over their
communities.
Not only in Asia and Africa, but also in south America, the widespread
usage of child labour by merciless employers, and the expanding trade in
drugs and narcotics dominated by powerful groups are vivid examples of
the barbarous features that take grip of human societies. Other misdeeds
practiced on a large scale involve the extending manufacture of all sorts of

forged and imitated goods without any respect to their inventors or the
regulations required for their safe use.
We also find that bribery and the embezzlement of public funds by
unscrupulous individuals take alarming proportions in many nations. At the
same time, the unauthorized sale of fire arms and the marketing of
suspicious medicaments, whose consumption is proved harmful to the sick,
have become intensive operations that are carried by international
organizations that no authority is able to check and penalize.
All these transgressions to law and morality weaken the sources of the
state and impair the social condition of the inhabitants because of the tax
evasion they generate in every country. Worse than that, they enable their
authors to handle the clever strategy of laundering their billions of dollars
through lawful channels where no suspicion will be raised about crueltythrough which they have been amassed- and even the death of the
thousands of defenseless creatures they have caused.

Working children lives are difficult not just because of their work.
Their families are poor or they have no families and no resources. Because
they have no education, they are condemned to be poor all their lives.
The British charity Save the Children says that it is important to
talk to child labourers to find solutions. Not all work is bad or dangerous. In
some cases, if children cant work, they or their families cant survive.
Boycotts of products made using child labour result in the children being
forced to do more dangerous work. Save the Children supports projects that
give young workers access to education and better working conditions.

For example, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, teenagers from

poor families receive some money to start businesses. They can buy products
to sell at the market and make some money. Because they are the bosses,
they can choose when to work and they have money to pay for school.
Embroiderers like Nancy can go to classes organized by Save the
Children. The charity also helps them get reasonable pay for their work.
Nancy says, Now we know that our products sell very well in Europe. Before,
I didnt know how much money I received. It was written down. I couldnt
read it. I used to think it was a good idea to ban products made by children.
But I live in the practical world, and Im very concerned about my family. For
large families, its very important for at least one or two children to work. If
we don work, our families wont survive.

Counterfeit Drugs
Part1 Reading (15 pts)
A/Comprehension (7pts)
Read the text carefully then do the activities.
A counterfeit drug or a counterfeit medicine is a medication which is
produced and sold with the intent to deceptively represent its origin or
effectiveness. The common street word for counterfeit drug is bead bag.
Such a product may not contain a sufficient amount of active ingredients or
contains entirely incorrect ones.
People who apply a counterfeit medication may experience a number of
dangerous consequence to their health, such as unexpected side effects,
allergic reactions or a worsening of their condition. Many counterfeits contain
inert substances which do not provide the patient any treatment benefits. On
the contrary, they may be hazardous.
It is estimated that upward of 10% of drugs worldwide are counterfeit,
and in some countries more than 50% of the drug supply is made up of
counterfeit drugs. Furthermore, the World Heath Organization estimates that
the annual earning of counterfeit drugs are over $32 billion.
There are several technologies to help combating this problem, such as
radio frequency identification which uses electronic devices to identify
pharmaceutical products. A new technique, Raman spectroscopy can be used
to discover counterfeit drugs while they are still in their packaging.
According to the latest researches, India stands as the first country in
fake drug manufacture. 75% of counterfeit medicines in the world have their
origins in India, followed by 07 % from Egypt and 06 % from China. In the
case if India, it is against the law to make drugs for domestic use, and it is
not against the law to make them for export.

White Collar Crimes
The illegal acts committed by middle or upper-class people in conjunction
with their ordinary occupational pursuits are called White-Collar Crime. The
term was first popularized in 1940 by the American criminologist Edwin
Sutherland in his classic paper White-Collar Criminality. Sutherland argued
that important sociological differences exist between conventional crimes
such as burglary and murder, which are defined without reference to the
social status or occupation of the criminal and white-collar crimes such as
fraud, embezzlement, tax evasion, misuse of public funds, and abuse of
political power. In general, the latter are committed by people of relatively
high social status, and are treated by the authorities more leniently than are
conventional crimes
Historically, the chief sanctions against white-collar criminals have been
loss of position and public trust, loss of professional licence, and the levying
of fines. Jail sentences were rarely imposed. This leniency in prosecution
stemmed partly from the perception that a high-status individual implicated
in criminal activity was sufficiently punished by the presumed loss of social
esteem or occupational prospects; and partly from the fact that most whitecollar crimes are victimless offences. Only recently has this attitude begun to
change.

White-collar crime has become an increasing problem in the latter part of

the 20th century. Authorities in the United States, in particular, are dealing
with such crimes more severely because of the growing feeling that an effort
must be made to establish equality before the law for all citizens without
regard to money, power, or social status.

Anti-Corruption Education
Education is central in preventing corruption. Even clear laws and
regulations and well-designed institutions will not be able to prevent
corruption, unless citizens actively demand accountability from government
and institutions.
The attitudes and expectations of citizens are crucial in building a
responsive public administration. Therefore fostering attitudes that do not
tolerate corruption is at the core of Transparency Internationals (TIs) work.
Ethics education for young people can help break the cycle of corruption, as
todays youth will be potential leaders of tomorrow.
However, anti-corruption education does not work in isolation. The
environment in which children grow up plays a decisive role in shaping their
attitudes. Ethics education must be part of a broader effort to improve
governance and reduce corruption. Within this framework, children must
have an appropriate and conducive learning environment that values
integrity.
Thus, in order to be credible, anti-corruption teaching must relate to the
daily lives of the students and address real life dilemmas, conflicts if
interests and corruption cases. Several civil society organisations around the
world have played an important role in making anti-corruption education a
reality. Though they have approached the topic from different angles,
including moral or value education, human rights and civic education, they all
have set up a common goal, strengthening young peoples attitudes and
demand for accountability, and ultimately, to build trust in government and
the public sector.

October 3rd is childrens day. At the United Nations in New York City,
children from many countries will meet to celebrate this special occasion. On
that day, 75 to 150 million children between the ages of eight and fifteen will
get up to do adults jobs, to the determinant of their health and education.
Most, but not all, of these children live in Third World Countries. Some of
these children find themselves responsible to help their parents with their
agricultural work: some work as servants in the home of rich people; others
are employed in factories where they are often exposed to dangerous
machinery and chemicals. Statistics show that many of these children work
more than 12hours a day.
Factory directors like to employ children because they can pay them
less than adults; and very few children know enough about their legal rights
to ask for better pay and working conditions. The parents of working children
rarely protest, they need the childs salary to survive. The problem of child
labour is much more serious in the third world, but it also exist in Europe and
the United States, where many children have part-time jobs to help their

families or just to have some pocket money . Paradoxically, in countries

where adults dont have jobs, a lot of children work.
Is there a solution to the international crime against todays children and
future generation? It is clear that the exploitation of children from very poor
families is easy and that it will continue. And because these children are
more vulnerable and often less capable of defending themselves; they need
special legal protection and assistance from international organisations.

Ethics in business is the set of moral values that the professionals of

any field are expected to respect when they deal either with each other or
with the public .In business , ethics represents the attitudes that individuals
and firms should comply with in the actions they perform and the decisions
they take at every level of their realisations. Such a philosophy does not exist
every where because it needs the existence of important conditions to apply
it.
In societies where both political and cultural conditions exist for
making every one obey this practice , the main principles that those engaged
in the economic branches should follow involve a good number of the
qualities that have always served as the basis for civilisation. Among them

we find the obligation to be honest and lawful in ones activities. It is also

essential to act in conformity with the spirit of fair competition which imposes
the acceptance of new comers in ones sphere and forbids the recourse to
the use of monopolisation not only in the spheres of manufacturing and
selling goods but also as regards the services which are provided to the
community.
Next to these aspects , ethics requires from various members and
groups of economic sectors the payment of ones taxes to the state and the
necessity to treat ones employees with fairness either in the question of
salaries or in matters related to the various social benefits they have the
right to such as insurance policies , retirement pensions and the protection
from professional accidents.

Education
Part one: Reading (15pts)
A. Comprehension (7pts)
Read the following text carefully then do the activities.
I think that the primary goal of life is to find happiness, which means to find
interest. Education should be a preparation for life. Our culture has not been
very successful. Our education, politics and economics lead to war. Our
medicines have not done away with diseases. Our religion has not abolished
corruption and theft. The advances of the age are advances toward robotism,
toward radio and television and toward electronics and jet planes. There is a
menace of new world wars because the worlds social conscience is still
primitive.
If we feel like questioning today, we can pose a few questions. Why does
man seem to have many more diseases than animals have? Why does man
hit and kill in wars? Why does cancer increase? Why does man think but not
feel? Why are there so many suicides? Why is there racial discrimination?
Why, a thousand whys about our vaunted state of technological progress?
I ask these questions because I am a teacher, the one who deals with the
young. I ask these questions because those so often asked by teachers are
the unimportant ones, the ones about school subjects. I ask what good can
come out of discussions about American or ancient history. These subjects do
not matter a lot compared to the larger question of lifes natural
accomplishment, of mans inner happiness.
When I lecture students at teacher training universities, I am often shocked
at the childishness of these youths full of useless knowledge. They know a lot
in history, literature and sciences, but in their view of life many of them are
still children because they have been taught to know, but have not been
permitted to feel. These students are friendly, pleasant, but something is
missing in them which is the emotional factor, the power to subordinate
thinking to feel. Their textbooks do not deal with human character, or with
love, or with freedom, or with self determination. This is how our system
works. Its target is book learning, that is to say, separating the head from the
heart.

Anti-Corruption Education

Part1: Reading
(14points)
Comprehension
points)
Read the passage carefully then do the activities.

(7

Anti-corruption education is a vital component of any anti-corruption

strategy. Informed citizens are probably more effective in preventing corrupt
and unethical behaviour of public servants than the most sophisticated codes
of conduct, laws and regulations. Anti-corruption laws and institutions need
people who do not tolerate corruption and who actively act against it:
Without reports of corruption, corrupt acts cannot be sanctioned, ombudsmen
cannot follow up on complaints, and the judiciary cannot prosecute.
The goal of anti-corruption education is to build demand for accountability.
Anti-corruption education promotes values, attitudes and expectations that
condemn corruption, and skills to resist it. Anti-corruption education develops
people's understanding of their rights and responsibilities for preserving the
public good. It highlights the damage done by minor acts of corruption: The
traffic officer who lets a drunk driver go in exchange for a small bribe, the
nurse who denies patients treatment if they are unable to pay 'an additional
fee', the customs officer who extorts payments from small traders and
enterprise: These acts potentially kill, ruin small enterprises, and deprive
people of their human rights to health, education and security.
Anti-corruption education impacts at two levels: First, it aims at
strengthening individuals in their ethical decision-making. Value conflicts and
ethical dilemmas frequently arise in the daily lives of people, for example
when family values, such as loyalty, clash with work ethics, such as
impartiality. Ethics education should provide the skill to identify such
conflicts, and instill the motivation for solving them in the best interest.
Second, it aims at building a culture of zero-tolerance for corruption, through
strengthening public awareness and participation in political life, and through
mobilizing the public to stand up against corruption.
Anti-corruption education is not an agenda on its own, but should be
regarded as part of broader approaches to ethics and citizenship. The latter,
aims at strengthening democratic processes and participation in politics, and
promotes values such as representation, solidarity, participation,
responsibility and pluralism.
So as young people constitute a countrys future political and economic
leaders, their education should be an important component of anti-corruption
strategies. Anti-corruption education should be integrated in school subjects
such as civics or citizenship education, but also history, politics, religion, life
skills, peace education, economics or ethics.
When teaching anti-corruption, educationalists should deal with themes
that are particularly interesting to youth, for example by linking ethics with
sports. On the other hand, they have to focus more on practice rather than
theory. Successful methods include students' surveys and polls, role plays to
facilitate the understanding of differing interests and to promote the ability
for conflict resolution, public debates, and attending parliamentary sessions

or visiting public institutions to understand how democracy works. School

practice also is itself an important vehicle for transmitting values. The
context in which integrity and ethics are taught needs to be free of repression
and fear.

(who thought Athens was the best!), Greeks from other city-states had a
grudging admiration for the Spartans. They wouldn't want to be Spartans, but
in times of war, they most certainly wanted Sparta to be on their side. The
Spartans were tough, and the ancient Greeks admired strength.
In ancient Athens, the purpose of education was to produce citizens trained
in the arts, to prepare citizens for both peace and war. Girls were not
educated at school, but many learned to read and write at home, in the
comfort of their courtyard. Other than requiring two years of military training
that began at age 18, the state left parents to educate their sons as they saw
fit. The schools were private, but the tuition was low enough so that even the
poorest citizens could afford to send their children for at least a few years.
Until age 6 or 7, boys were taught at home by their mother or by a male
slave. Later, in the fourth century B.C. in some cities public schools were
open that were available to poor.
However, the goal of education in Sparta, an authoritarian, military citystate, was to produce soldier-citizens. In ancient Sparta, the purpose of
education was to produce a well-drilled, well-disciplined marching army.
Spartans believed in a life of discipline, self-denial, and simplicity. They were
very loyal to the state of Sparta. Every Spartan, male or female, was required
to have a perfect body. When babies were born in ancient Sparta, Spartan
soldiers would come by the house and check the baby. If the baby did not
appear healthy and strong, the infant was taken away, and left to die on a
hillside, or taken away to be trained as a slave (a helot). Babies who passed
this examination were assigned membership in a brotherhood or sisterhood,
usually the same one to which their father or mother belonged.

On the other hand, the Spartans believed that their women should be
educated and capable of defending themselves. This was deemed necessary
so they could defend not only themselves but their husband's property during
his absence. Women enjoyed much freedom and could move around as they
wished, because their husbands did not live at home with them. Spartan
women are frequently pictured as warriors. The goddess Artemis was often
considered as a Patron goddess and worrier in Sparta.
By comparison, the women of Athens city-state encountered a very
different type of education to that of the Spartan women. Before education
Athenian women were subjected to a lifetime of enthusiastically obeying the
wishes and orders of others. Even their counterpart Spartan sisters were
better fed during this time. Athenians were taught all the domestic skills they
needed to run the home, along with weaving and spinning. They were not
taught to read and write and were not allowed to conduct business
transactions or own property.

In the United States, almost all high schools or secondary schools begin
with ninth grade and offer four-year programs. High schools prepare students
either for college, universities, technical schools, or for a vocation.
The United States has one of the world's highest high school enrolment
rates. Almost all U.S. girls and boys enter high school, and about 75 percent
graduate. High schools in the United States offer college preparatory
programs and vocational programs. College preparatory programs give
students the necessary background for admission to a college or university.
Vocational programs prepare students for jobs immediately following high
school.
All high schools offer required courses--that is, classes in such subjects
as English, science, and social studies. High school students also may choose
from a wide variety of elective courses, such as music, foreign languages, or
industrial arts. Extracurricular high school activities, which occur outside of
classroom time, include sports, clubs, and plays.

Most United States high schools are free public schools supported chiefly
by state and local taxes. Each local school district has a governing body,
usually a school board, that makes school policies. Each high school is
headed by an experienced educator, usually called the principal.
About 90 percent of students in the United States attend public high
schools. The United States also has several types of secondary schools
outside the public-school system. Most of these private schools include
parochial schools, which are operated by religious groups, and private college
preparatory schools, also called prep schools. Prep schools prepare students
for admission to colleges and universities. Each state has laws and rules that
its high schools must follow.

All children in the United States have to receive an education, but the
law does not say they have to be educated at school. A number of parents
prefer not to send their children to school. Children who are educated at
home are known as home-schoolers. There are about 300,000 homeschooled children in the United States today.
David Guterson and his wife teach their three children at home.
Guterson says that his children learn very differently from children in school.
Learning starts with the childrens interests and questions. For example,
when there is heavy snowfall on a winter day, it may start a discussion or
reading about climate, snow removal-equipment, Alaska polar bears, and
winter tourism. Or a spring evening when the family is out watching the stars
is a good time to ask questions about satellites and the space program. If the
Brazilian rain forests are on the TV news, it could be a perfect time to talk
about how rain forests influence the climate, how deserts are formed, and
how the polar ice caps affect ocean levels.
Home-schooling is often more interesting than regular schools, but
critics say that home-schoolers might find it difficult to mix with other people
in adult life. Critics also say that most parents are not well qualified to teach
their children. However, most parents dont have time or the desire to teach
their children at home, so schools will continue to be where most children get

Schools and universities existed in Britain long before the government
began to take interest in education. There were public schools where the
sons of upper and upper-middle classes were educated to take up positions in
the higher ranks of the army, in business and politics. In fact, those were
private schools for the privileged. Only very rich families could afford to pay
for the studies, because the fees were very high .They were free from state
control and most of them were boarding. It goes without saying that
education there was of a high quality; the discipline was very strict. When the
pupils from these schools finished their education, they formed the ruling
elite, retaining the distinctive habits and vocabulary which they had learnt at
school.
Some of the many changes that have taken place in British education
in the second half of the twentieth century simply reflect the wider social
process of increased egalitarianism; education and its possibilities for social
advancement came within everybodys reach.
Before 1965, most children in the country had to take an exam at
about the age of eleven, at the end of their primary schooling. If they passed
that exam, they went to a grammar school where they were taught academic
subjects to prepare them for university, the professions, management jobs
and other highly skilled jobs. If they failed, they went to modern school. Many
people argue that it was wrong for a persons life to be decided at so young
an age. The children who went to secondary moderns tended to be seen as
failures.
Over the next decade, the division into grammar schools and
secondary modern schools was changed. These days, most eleven-year olds
all go to the same local school. These schools are known as co-educational
comprehensive schools. In such schools, children of school age (5-16) study
three core subjects within their curriculum: English, Maths and Science and
seven foundational ones: Technology, History, Geography, Music, Art, Physical

Education is compulsory and free for every child in The United
States. Most children start school at the age of six. They attend
eight years of elementary school and four years of high school (or
secondary school). The money for free public schools comes from
taxes, and each state is responsible for its own educational system.
State legislatures set the educational requirements but leave the
management of schools in the hands of the local communities. Most
states require their children to go to school until a certain age. This
age varies from 16 to 18 years according to the laws of the
individual states. The Federal government contributes funds to the
states for additional schools and school services.
After graduation from high school, a student can start his higher
education in a two-year college, a four-year college, a university, or
a specialized professional school-either public or private. Most
colleges admit students on the basis of their high-school records.
The cost of a college education is expensive in private universities,
but it is much less in those supported by states and cities. Many
students receive scholarships from the schools, the government, or
private foundations and organizations. More than 50 % of the
college students work to help pay their college expenses. Only 2 %

The English Educational System
Education in England is divided into: primary, secondary, further and
higher education. Compulsory education lasts for 11 years; statutory
schooling ages are between 5 and 16years. Children are legally required to
start attending at the beginning of the term after their fifth birthday, however

children often start earlier than this. Pupils are required to stay at school until
the last Friday in June of the school year in which they reach 16 years of age.
During this time children must receive full-time education that is suited to
their age, ability, aptitude and special educational needs (SEN). If a child
does not attend school, the local education authority (LEA) must be
satisfiedthat an other appropriate provision is
available
.

Most pupils move from primary to secondary school at the age of 11.
However, a system of middle schools also exists; here pupils are transferred
from primary at either age 8 or 9 years, then onto secondary education at
age 12or 13 years. Most secondary schools in England are comprehensive,
these do not operate a selective entrance system .However, in some parts of
England. A grammar school system also operates whereby pupils are usually
required to pass an entrance examination based on their ability.
Schools in the state sector are financed by the government and
administered through education authorities, although many schools now
manage their own finances and are known as granted maintained schools. No
financial contribution to a childs education is required of the parents.

In America, people are afraid of unemployment. There is a direct link

development of common standards in essential subjects. America which
spends a quarter of trillion dollars a year on education, finds itself classed
13th compared to other developed countries. This has a bad consequence on
business. People who have a better education, have better jobs and get

better pay. Countries that have better educational systems have stronger
economies and can compete in the world market place.
In the USA, big transnational companies feel concerned about the
decline in education. Some of them like IBM are putting big sums of money
on education and research. They have offered computers to public schools to
foster education and research. These big companies need people who have a

(08pts)
Read the following text carefully then do the activities.
Advertisers tend to think big and perhaps this is why they are criticized.
Their critics feel angry with them because they have so much money to
throw around. Its unjust, they say that entirely unproductive industry
absorbs millions of pounds every year.
Lots of big companies are making much profit. Why dont they stop
advertising and reduce the price of their goods. The poor consumer would
have to pay a great deal more if advertising didnt create many markets for
products. Its precisely because of heavy advertising that consumer goods
are so cheap. But we get the wrong idea if we think that the only purpose of
advertising is to sell goods. Another important function is to inform. A great
deal of knowledge we have about household goods derive largely from the

advertisements we read. They introduce us to new products or remind us of

the existence of a few ones we already know.
We mustnt forget that advertising makes a positive contribution to
our pockets. The fact that we pay so little for our daily paper, or enjoy so
many broadcast programs is due to the money spent by advertisers. Another
thing to remember is the small adverts in every newspaper and magazine.
What a tremendous useful service they perform for the community. For
example, you can find a job, buy or sell a house, announce a birth, marriage
or any other event..

Dear Sir / Madam
I feel I must complain about the lunch we had at your restaurant on
Thursday 17th May. Unfortunately, both the food and the service were not
satisfactory.
To begin with, the dishes we ordered were not tasty because of heavy
seasoning. There was also so much salt and pepper on the food that it was
impossible to eat the whole meal. Furthermore, your advertisement was
misleading as there were only two vegetarian dishes on the menu.
I must also point out that none of the dessert we ordered was fresh. In
fact, they smelled bad and the delicious Italian cakes were stale. As if this
was not bad enough, the prices were far from reasonable and contrary to what
was stated in your advertisement; we found everything outrageously priced.
To make matters worse, the air-conditioning was out of order. As a result,
we felt hot and extremely uncomfortable.
Finally, when we asked for the bill, we were surprised about the staffs
ignorance of the 10% discount for group bookings. Again, this was something
highlighted in your advertisement. We could have made a fuss about it, but
we decided not to.
Considering all the above, I believe I am entitled to a partial refund. I am
confident that this matter will receive your prompt attention. I look forward to
hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,
James Kent

(08pts)
Greedy marketing executives have found a new way of selling their
products to children. Besides bombarding them on TV, in the streets and at
school, the worlds junk food makers are trying to sell their hamburgers,
chocolate and soft drinks to children who play games on the Internet.
A new report says more than eighty percent of the worlds food
companies are using this clever method. The report was created by
Americas Kaiser Family Foundation. It is called It's Child's Play:
Advergaming and the Online Marketing of Food to Children. It is the first
major analysis of how food companies advertise to children on the Web. It
studies the tactics of companies such as Mars, and McDonalds in targeting
kids. The report says online advertisements are more effective than TV ads
at attracting children.
The report sadly brings a new word into the English vocabulary the
advergame. This is an immoral technique to get kids attracted while they
are having fun online. In addition, a variety of other marketing tactics are
used to get kids to spend long periods of time online. The food companies
fill the games with logos and advertisements. They encourage children to
e-mail their friends about products and brands. They also recommend
children to join special clubs related to the games. Children can increase
their chances of winning games by buying the products and typing in
special codes found inside the packaging. Ethical concerns are raised about
the role food advertising plays in childhood obesity; some specialists warn
the reach of online advertising is much deeper than that of television.

What about a Big Mac, Mr. Spurlock?
Last year, Morgan Spurlock, a US film-maker spent 30days eating
at Mac Donalds for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And he documented his
gastronomic journey in the award-winning film Super Size Me.

The idea for the documentary, which will come out nationally on
June 3rd, came after the 33-year-old saw a T.V news report about two
teenagers suing Mac Donalds for making them obese.
At the beginning of the month, the 188cm Spurlock weighed 84
kg and was declared fit and healthy by three doctors- a General
Practitioner, a liver and blood specialist, and a cardiologist, who
monitored his progress.
Within two weeks his liver, according to his General Practitioner,
had turned to pt, he had gained more than 11kg, and his cholesterol
had risen by almost 40%.
By week three Spurlock woke up one morning with chest pains and
heart palpitations. The worst thing was the incredible mood swings with
highs and lows, from excitement when he ate to depression because the
food is filled with so much fat and sugar and caffeine.
As for eating another Big Mac, Spurlocks answer is surprising. To
this day, if I smell a Big Mac I want it. It makes my mouth water. I cant
eat it though, because it doesnt even taste like food any more.

NASA has successfully launched a rocket carrying a planet-hunting telescope.
The powerful Kepler telescope will search for planets similar to the Earth.
Scientists believe there are good chances of finding a planet like ours
somewhere out there in the galaxy. There are billions and billions of stars in
the heavens. If one planet is the right distance from one of these stars, then
conditions might be right to support life. The planets atmosphere should
neither be too hot nor too cold. The planet would also need water. The
telescope is named after the German 17th-Century astronomer Johannes
Kepler. It will spend more than three years looking for dark specks against the
brightness of a hundred-thousand stars. These specks could be Earth-like
planets.
The manager of the $600-million project Jim Fanson said: We have a feeling
like we're about to set sail across an ocean to discover a new world. NASAs
space science boss Ed Weiler agreed that the mission was a historical
landmark in space exploration. However, he couldnt say whether or not the
telescope would find another Earth. It very possibly could tell us that Earths
are very, very common...or that Earths are really, really, really rare - perhaps
we're the only Earth, he said. He told reporters how important Keplers
journey was, saying: It really attacks some basic human questions that have
been asked since that first man or woman looked up at the sky and asked,

The Red Planet
The idea of life on Mars has fascinated us ever since the concept was
popularized by H. G. Wells in his novel The War of the Worlds in 1898. But
once we started probing the planet, we discovered nothing more than a
dusty, frozen wasteland. Ten years ago, astronomers thought they knew all
there was to know about Mars-and there was nothing to write home about.
Our fantasies about coming face-to-face with strange extraterrestrial
neighbours faded. It was concluded that the Red Planet was dead: no active
volcanoes, no interesting geology, no flowing water and no life-end of story.
But some key events since then have led to an exciting resurrection of the
possibility of Martians, even if they are only microbes. We know that streams
of water gush across the red plains. Mars giant volcanoes are merely
dormant, and will erupt again.
This year, Mars comes closer to Earth than it has done for 59,619 years.
Last time it was this near, we were living in caves and the event most

probably went unnoticed. But now were well equipped to make the most of
the opportunity and are dispatching a number of new probes to investigate
the planet. Among them is Britains very own Beagle 2 Lander, which will
touch down on the rocky surface and carry out experiments specifically
designed to answer the Big Question: Is there life on Mars?

Astronomy is the science that deals with the origin, evolution, composition,
distance and motion of all bodies and scattered matter in the universe. It
includes astrophysics, which discusses the physical properties and structure
of all cosmic matter.

Until the invention of the telescope and the discovery of the law of motion
and gravity in the 17th century, astronomy was primarily concerned with
noting and predicting the position of the sun, moon and planets, initially for
calendar and astrological purposes and later for navigational applications and
scientific interest.
During the 20th century, astronomy has expanded to include astrophysics,
the application of physical and chemical knowledge to an understanding of
the nature of celestial objects and the physical processes that control their
formation, evolution and emission of radiation.
Its great advances not with standing, astronomy is still subject to a major
constraint, it is inherently an observational rather than an experimental
science. All measurements must be performed at great distances from the
objects of interest, with no control over such quantities as their temperature
pressure or chemical composition.

The marketing of junk food and fast food has become big business
some have called the food industry the next Tobacco. Companies spend top
dollar on advertising to make us keenly aware of their products. The
aggressive advertising is working, Pepsi spends an estimated $2.1 billion a
year on marketing, McDonalds $1.2 billion, and Coca-Cola is not far behind at
$895 million.

The average child watches 10,000 food advertisements per year on

television; most are for junk food and fast foodonly 2% are for fruits,
vegetables, or beans. Advertisements for junk food and fast food can also be
seen in magazines, movies (through product placement), stores, the Internet,
and even schools. What impact is this having on youth? Recent statistics
indicate that 14% of children are now seriously overweight. 60% of
overweight children between the ages of 5-10 years of age already have at
least one risk factor for heart disease, including elevated blood cholesterol,
blood pressure or increased insulin, and type 2 diabetes.
However, todays youth, particularly girls, get mixed messages from the
media. On one hand, they are bombarded daily with advertisements for junk
food and fast food on television and magazines, yet the same magazines and
television shows that serve up these ads also celebrate the waif look by
portraying pencil-thin models. This has created a state of confusion and
potential danger for many young women (and men). The National Eating
Disorders Association estimates that 81% of 10-year-olds are afraid of being

The health time bomb of obesity is exploding. Already one in three
UK children is obese or overweight. Unless we act, by 2050 over half
of adults and almost half of children will be clinically obese. Given
that obesity takes, on average, 13 years from the life of sufferers,
this could lead to the first fall in life expectancy for over 300 years.
A key cause of the obesity crisis is our poor diet. The vast majority
of UK children consume too much salt, fat and sugar and almost all of
them don't get enough fruits and vegetables. In addition to obesity,
poor diet is causing a rise in diabetes, heart diseases and other
health problems.
It is no coincidence that children eat the foods they see on
advertisements. Marketers spend over 300 million on food
promotion - almost always unhealthy - on TV before 9 pm, and this
money is not wasted. Children and parents both say the constant
marketing of funk food is one reason why they consume so much of
it. In fact almost three- quarters of parents say that junk food

advertising influences their children's food choice. Of course

children's diets are the responsibility of their parents. But hardpressed mums and dads need some help.
To ban junk food advertising before 9pm is the best way to protect
children. Over 70 per cent of children's TV viewing is outside the
hours of children's TV (when the government's advertising
restrictions apply). The commercial TV programmes that children
watch most are Ant & Dec, The X Factor and Coronation Street.
Unless we protect children from TV adverts during these programmes
we will not tackle the obesity crisis.

The story is one of tragedy and fraud. It started in May 1981, when
travelling salesmen in Northern and central Spain started selling cheap olive
oil. They guaranteed that it was pure, and had sold vast quantities around
Madrid, Valladolid and Leon, before anyone realized that it was wrong.
Like most Mediterranean countries, Spain uses olive oil in its cooking.
When people started falling ill in May, nobody suspected that it was the
cooking oil which was the cause of the illness. It was a medical mystery:
doctors and scientists were completely baffled by the spread of the disease.
There were several theories about what was happening. At first, it
was thought that bad fish had caused food poisoning, and later, that it was
rotten fruit. It was until June that childrens doctor in Madrid made the
connection between the sickness and the oil. Immediately, the government
started issuing public warnings, and offered to take any suspect oil, giving
pure oil exchange. This stopped the spread of the poison. But it was too late
for the thousands of people who had already eaten the contaminated
substance. People who had been affected could not eat or sleep, had pains all
over their body, suffered headaches and fevers, and had difficulty in
breathing. Some of them even died.
Doctors and scientists were still not sure what the poison was. The
most popular theory was that a Spanish company imported some industrial
oil from France, and tried to remove the impurities by boiling it at 200C.
They mixed it with a small amount of olive oil to give it a taste, and then sent
it to the salesmen to sell as pure olive oil. When they boiled the oil, however,
they created a new substance, which was poisonous and unknown to the
medical authorities. At one time, twenty thousand people in Spain were
analyzing the oil, trying to find a cure for the poison. By March 1982, they
had still not found a way of curing the illness caused by the oil. The Spanish
health Ministry admitted that all antidotes so far tried had been unsuccessful.
While the medical authorities were carrying out the various analyses, the
police arrested fourteen people suspected of being responsible for the oil
poisoning.

Love Advice
"Love is a feeling that comes from the heart and changes our lives forever..."
Helen Grant
Love is special and love is precious. It comes in our lives like a soft breeze
and things change forever. So when something is so valuable, we should
make sure it stays with us forever. But as it is said the path of true love never
runs smooth.
So here we are with some simple suggestions to help make your love life
smooth and happy. Our love advice is simply a step in helping you see the
stronger and the positive side of your relationship. Sometimes minor
arguments can lead to a lifetime of heartbreak. But it doesn't have to be that
way.
With these practical and simple love advice, you can work your way
around nearly of any crisis. So don't give up yet. And better, strengthen your
love bonds; as love is richer than all the gold put together and more beautiful
than the nature itself.
Build a Bridge of Communication
The best way to enhance any relationship is through communication. If
there is open communication there is hardly any room for misunderstanding
or secrets. You will feel free and your love life will only turn towards the
positive side.
But never use words to hurt someones feeling. Words leave a lasting
impression whether positive or negative. So speak only good things. And
even if you are angry, take control and speak after your anger has subsided.
Let your heart do the talking not the ego or the anger.

Listen to Your Sweetheart

Communication and listening go hand in hand. So understand the
importance of both. When your sweetheart wants to say something, give
him/her your undivided attention. If you feel you are completely stressed out
and cant give your 100% then say it politely like, sweetheart can I freshen
up and then we can sit and talk? Shell surely respect you for being honest.
See the situation and react appropriately.
When you are listening, make sure your body as well as your mind is
there. You cant be doing justice to your relationship if you are thinking about
something else. An occasional nodding of the head will reassure your partner
that you understand what he/she is saying.
Praise Your Partner
Praising goes a long way. Most of the time the person we love hear
praises least. So remember to praise your beloved once in a while. Leave
small thank you chits to show your appreciation. When among friends and
family praise him/her for being considerate and helpful. After all even the
smallest gesture is an expression of love that should be reciprocated
whenever possible.
Say "I am Sorry"
Saying sorry to anybody is never easy. Most of the times our pride comes
in our way. But these three simple words are very effective, easily when it can
save from building lot of resentment.
The next time you have a fight, and you are at the wrong end say these
simple three words. If you are finding it difficult to say it in person, take some
help. You can write a big sorry note and pin it on the wall. Sorry cards and
flowers are also a good way to show that you really mean what you are
saying. Let love be the only feeling that you two share, not resentment and
misunderstanding.
So keep reading these love advice and change your relationship for the
better. Be together always

Harmony, this is how I would refer to the world today. You may say I live
in a dream world and that the world around us is rotting and in a real turmoil.
You may be right, but I am against such negative attitudes. Why do you
always focus on those who make war and not on those who devote their lives
for a shadow of peace?
Just look around you for a second and see how everything in the
universe works in harmony. Seasons come and go in total harmony; insects
work in harmony, sun and moon, day and night, colors at sunrise and sunset.
Its up to us to learn to live in harmony, it is in our diversity: we should learn
to shift from color to color, from culture to culture, from religion to religion
with no fright, no taboos and no hesitation. In our diversity, lies all our
strength.
It is said in the Coran that God endowed angels with reason and
animals with instinct. But He endowed Man with both. So we have the choice
either to rise to the level of angels and create a spirit of harmony, forgiveness
and reconciliation, or to lower to the level of animals and act as barbarians
and primitives as a philosopher said, if doing Good, Man is better than angels,
however, if doing bad he is worse than animals.
Once I was asked what the word Eldora do meant to me. Everybody
had the same answer, its a place where people can make money and
become wealthy. I do not think Eldora do is a land of treasure; it is rather a
state of spirit. When there is harmony between you and your spirit, you see
beauty where everybody else sees only ugliness, you see love where others
see only hatred and you see serenity where others see only conflict; make
peace with yourself and you will see only harmony.

Gil Alicea is Puerto Rican-American. He lives in South Bronx in New York. USA.
You find a lot of crime, violence and drugs there. Gils mother and little sister
both died of AIDS. His father is in jail. When he was 16 years old, Gil wrote a
book about his life:

We always did crazy and dangerous things. We rode on top of elevators and
hung on the backs of buses. I also used to fight a lot. I usually picked a
regular, someone I wanted to fight every time I saw him. It was something I
did, but now I dont know why.

I like my Math teacher, Big Bird. He understands that boys are a bit wild. I
go to a trade school. There are not many girls at my school.
I like to play basketball. Im good, but I didnt get on the team. I was too
nervous when I tried. I get nervous when people expect something from me.

I like girls, and they like me. Im funny and smart, and I like to listen to them.
A good piece of advice to boys: be yourself. Girls like that.

I have lost many friends. They are not dead, but I never see them anymore.
They do things I dont do anymore. I dont use drugs and I dont party. I miss
them for the fun we had. I want to grow up, and they
dont.
