Growing Deeply

a daily scripture guide

Week of November 21 - November 26

Sunday Sermon

Heart-Felt Generosity, So That... - November 20

Scripture: 1 Timothy 6:17-20 (NRSV)

MONDAY: 1 Timothy 6:17-20 The measure of greatness

Human greatness does not lie in wealth or power, but in character and
goodness. (Anne Frank)
REFLECTION: How do you evaluate someone by what he has or what he does?
How do you evaluate yourself by what you have accumulated or what you do
with what you have?

As for those who in the present age are rich, command them not to be haughty,
or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but rather on God who richly
provides us with everything for our enjoyment. They are to do good, to be rich
in good works, generous, and ready to share, thus storing up for themselves the
treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life
that really is life.

TUESDAY: 1 Timothy 6:17-20 Here today, gone tomorrow

So much of what we have is ethereal, impermanent - easily lost. If we cling to
things, we are tempted to focus on what does not really matter.
CONSIDER: What does the writer of 1 Timothy mean by the comment,
command them not to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches?

Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you. Avoid the profane chatter and
contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge.

WEDNESDAY: 1 Timothy 6:17-20 Lasting riches

Scripture suggests that we are to do good, be rich in good works, generous, and
ready to share.
REFLECTION: Reflect upon this quote from Oscar Wilde: Ordinary riches can
be stolen; real riches cannot. In your soul are infinitely precious things that
cannot be taken from you.

My Notes:

THURSDAY: 1 Timothy 6:17-20 A good foundation

Focusing on the important things in life - those positive, lasting qualities
that cannot be taken away from us gives a foundation that is strong and
unshakable.
CONSIDER: Benjamin Disraeli is quoted to have said, The greatest good you can
do for another is not just to share your riches but to reveal to him his own.
Can you think of someone who needs your help in finding his/her own riches?
FRIDAY: 1 Timothy 6:17-20 Life
Verse 19b: so that they may take hold of the life that really is life.
QUESTION: What is the life that really is life? What changes do I need to make
to find it?
SATURDAY: 1 Timothy 6:17-20 Knowledge
Finding truth in the midst or rhetoric can be very difficult. What is sometimes
called knowledge is often nothing more than misguided opinion.
PRAYER: Help us, oh God, to focus on what really matters in life, to store up
lasting riches of goodness rather than greatness, and to listen with discerning
ears and hearts.
