BRIEF OVERVIEW

Movement and Assistance of Hospital Patients (MAPO) is a risk index which is set up in 1997
by the Research Unit Ergonomics of Posture and Movement (EPM) of Milan for the assessment
of patient manual-handling risk in hospital wards. It is widely used to identify how long is the
worker exposed to a certain task that is needed to reduce risk.
According to Hignett C. (2001), one of the major health problems for health-care workers in
charge of non-cooperative patients is acute or chronic low back pain. This is why methods of risk
assessment of patient manual handling is proposed to analytically illustrate problems such as
this. In line with this, MAPO allows detailed analysis of the main risk determinants for low back
pain in nurses, comparison of different wards and comparison of pre- and post- intervention
plans (Menoni et al. 2004).

4TH SLIDE
INTRODUCTION

Hospitals provide opportunities for ergonomic aggravation that can result into injuries or
repetitive stress disorders. Major ergonomic issues in the hospital settings include patient
handling and awkward postures. Hospital employees are exposed to injuries such as muscle and
ligament strain and tears, joint and tendon inflammation, pinched nerves and other injuries from
ergonomic aggravation during handling, transferring, and repositioning of patients.
These studies will compromise the problem, introduction on MAPO index, objectives and
possible solutions for manual patient handling.

OBJECTIVES
1. To determine the overview of Safe Patient Handling (SPH) in terms of:
a. Body mechanics
b. Lifting limits
c. Anatomy of injury
d. Controlling risk factors
2. To determine the difference between the old and new lifting culture

Conclusion and Recommendation
Based on the data gathered, below are the conclusions drawn from the study:
1. Manual patient handling tasks are physically demanding, performed
under unfavorable conditions, and are often unpredictable in
nature.
2. Patients are facing difference challenges in works that includes a
change in size/weight of patient, level of cooperation of worker and
sudden change of condition in a working place

3. In lifting, lack of convenience handles of lifting device, even

distribution of weight of the patients and lack of equipment have
been known to become a problem during the lifting process.
4. There are significant clinical consequences of working as a
healthcare worker
