Blue Christmas:
A Worship Experience For Those
Who Grieve
Holidays can be a
difficult time of
year for people
whose loved ones
have died
whether the death
was that year or
the year before, or
ten years before. Grief continues.
On December 11 at 3:30 p.m., we will
worship together to support one another
as we remember our loved ones who have
died.
There will be scripture readings, songs,
times of silence, and a time to share about
your loved one, if you would like to do so.

Tuesday Bible Study:

An Advent Journey
Begins
Nov. 29

Beginning November 29, and for each Tuesday during Advent, we will meet at Noon to
share in a meal (bring your own lunch) and a
time of reflection on "Advent Journey," our
theme for this season. Plan now to deepen
your walk with Jesus during Advent, as you
study the journeys of biblical characters. Invite a friend and join us!

Advent 2016 begins this Sunday, November 27

Our theme this year is Advent Journey, focusing on our journeys to the
manger. What is it that you bring to the manger? The Magi brought
gold, frankincense and myrrh; the Shepherds brought their praise; the
little Drummer Boy brought his drumming. What will you bring?
Each Sunday of Advent we will journey to the manger (at the front
of the church) and leave a symbol of what we want to bring to the
Christ child this season. The first week, our children will lead the way,
the second week the youth, and by the last two weeks, we will all know
how to journey to the manger and leave our gift.
In addition to leaving a gift (which you may take back home after
Christmas, if you want), you will be invited to pick up a sea shell to remind you of not only your journey, but the journeys of all the saints
who have come before you. (See related story below:)

The JourneyPilgrimageto El Camino de Santiago

2 c. all-purpose flour
2 tsp. ground ginger
1 tsp. soda
tsp. ground cinnamon
tsp. ground cloves
1/8 tsp. salt
c. shortening
1 c. granulated sugar
1 egg
c. molasses
Sugar for rolling

In English, this is the

Pilgrimage to The
Way of Saint James.
At the beginning of
the 9th Century, a
tomb was discovered.
According to legend
the bones were of St.
James the Apostle and
two of his disciples.
So pilgrimages began
to the church that was Pilgrim walking s cks adorned with Galician scallop
shells bearing the cross of St. James.
at Santiago. Throughout the medieval period it was one of the three most important Christian pilgrimages undertaken, the others being Jerusalem and Rome.
The scallop shell acts as a metaphor. The grooves in the shell, which
meet at a single point, represent the various routes pilgrims traveled,
eventually arriving at a single destination: the tomb of James in Santiago de Compostela. The shell is also a metaphor for the pilgrim: As the
waves of the ocean wash scallop shells up onto the shores of Galicia,
God's hand also guides the pilgrims. The shell was also practical. It was
the right size for gathering water to drink or for eating out of, as a
makeshift bowl.

In a medium mixing bowl stir together the

flour, ginger, soda, cinnamon, cloves, and salt.
Set aside. In a large mixing bowl, beat shortening until softened. Gradually add the 1 cup of
granulated sugar, beat until fluffy. Add egg and
molasses, beat well. Add half of flour mixture;
beat until combined.
(continued)

Stir remaining flour in with wooden spoon. Shape dough into 1-inch
balls. Roll in coarse or granulated sugar. Place on ungreased cookie
sheet. Bake in 350-degree oven for 12-14 minutes or until cookies are
light brown and puffed. (Do not overbake or cookies will not be
chewy.) Let stand for two minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
Cool. Makes about 2 dozen cookies.
