Father Brian Glasheen, the muchloved Parish Priest at St Bernards
Catholic Church, has retired after
almost 35 years in Bacchus Marsh.
Appointed as Administrator of
Bacchus Marsh in 1982 and as Parish
Priest in 1987, Father Glash was
known and adored by the whole
community.
The 77-year-old spent his younger
years as a civil engineer and as a
helping hand to his father, who
trained horses in Melbourne.
He attended Corpus Christi College
in Werribee from 1964 and was later
ordained in St Patricks Cathedral in
Ballarat on May 22, 1971.
He served as assistant priest in
Murrumbeena,
Manifold
and
Macleod; and Chaplain to the Social
Welfare Department.
On September 1, 1982, he arrived
in Bacchus Marsh and commenced
what would be a long and fulfilling
vocation.
I have been so lucky to serve the
people of this area, Father Glash
said.
When I first arrived, there were just
four policemen and only around 4000
people.
I have since worked with so many
families and children; baptising
over 1,500 children and working
with them for their first communion,
confirmation and reconciliation.
I have directed at least 800 funerals
and have enjoyed going into peoples
homes; most people are delighted to
have a visit from a priest, especially
in times of sickness or death.

Glash had been part of the fabric of St
Bernards and Bacchus Marsh.
He seems to know everyone he
meets by name and can connect
them to previous generations of their
family. His love and affection for the
people of Bacchus Marsh is genuine
and apparent, he said.

He will leave big shoes to fill. On

a personal level, I will be forever
grateful for his ongoing support of
the school.
In 1978, Father Glash acquired the
title The Pacing Priest, after featuring
in an article in the Sporting Globe. He
said harness racing was just as much
a part of his life as priesthood.
My family has been involved in
trotting since my grandfather drove
his first winner in 1880, he said.
Dad was a hobby trainer so I
assisted him, I passed my trotting
license at 16-years-old and drove a
winner at Healesville on December
26, 1963. I entered into the priesthood
shortly after, but have always kept
my association with trotting.
As a child, I entertained the ideas
of being a trainer, a farmer, a vet
surgeon, a blacksmith, and a priest.
My parents didnt encourage me into
the priesthood, it was my idea, and I
do believe that God called me, and I
knew if I was to be true to myself I
had to try and so I did.
Father Glash said he was appreciative
of his time in Bacchus Marsh and the
strong relationships he had made
with a lot of families in the area.
It has been a real privilege to be
able to function as a priest here.
People take you in with confidence
and accept you as one of the family,
he said.
[Retirement] has been a very hard
decision, but the body is wearing
out. The constant availability and
demands that this profession makes
of you is extremely tiring. I am sad
and I will miss a lot of people, but I
am satisfied that I have given it my
best.
Father Glash was farewelled at
St Bernards Church on Saturday
(November 19) with a Vigil Mass
followed by a social event in the
school recreation centre.
He will officially retire to Preston
early next year, where he plans to
spend more time with friends and
family.

Mayor takes a
new avenue

New Mayor David Edwards
is about as local as local can
get.
Not only is his family one of
the towns oldest, but Mayor
Edwards is now embarking
on 12 months of change for
a better future.
And its not only for Bacchus Marsh Cr Edwards
has his eye on the entire
shire.
Born and bred in Bacchus
Marsh, David Edwards, an
engineering manager with
the Department of Defence,
is starting his fifth year as
a councillor and his first
month as mayor.
I was born in the Marsh,
married in the Marsh, my
wife Lynette is from the
area we have two kids,
19 and 18, and four generations of my wifes family
went to Bacchus Marsh Primary School, Mr Edwards
explained.
Weve got a lot of family
roots in the town.
There are even literal roots
in the town, for those readers with a keen interest in
local history.

And while it is just his third
week as Mayor, Edwards has
already planned out his vision for the next 12-months,
noting key areas that he
sees as challenges facing
Moorabool.
We need to create more job
opportunities for our small
towns, and look at ways to

deliver services including
water and gas and sewerage,
reduce that pressure on the
valuable farming land , taking some of the pressure off
Bacchus Marsh and Ballan
as well.
We also need to do the
strategic work, ensure that
all the infrastructure such as
roads, rec. facilities and kin-
dergartens are put in place.

Cr Edwards also said that
the Moorabool Planning
Scheme needs to be updated,
so that council can defend its
decisions at VCAT.
He added more needs to be
done to support the shires
younger population, and
that a new fire training facility for the CFA needs to be
established within the shire.

Life after near death

Animal lovers are invited to
a very special open day this
month.
The Horse Shepherd Equine
Sanctuary, located in Gordon, will open its 200-acre
property to the public on
Sunday November 27.
The event will feature a
number of workshops and
demonstrations whilst also
celebrating the oldest equine
resident, Winstons 40th
birthday.
Owner, Anne Young said
a veterinarian workshop
would offer attendees an
insight into snakes and what
to do if a horse, or any other
animal, is bitten.
She said a handling display
would be presented by the
Horse Shepherds handler,
Chris Giles, alongside a
dressage display performed
by one of the sanctuarys
adopted horses.
We will then have a parade
of our own horses, she said.
People can also walk
around and view all of our
animals here. Theres not
just horses, we have turkeys
and chooks, alpacas, goats,
and donkeys.
The Horse Shepherd currently has 150 horses residing on its property, with
many ready to be re-homed.
Some of the horses are retired sanctuary horses, but
we definitely have some that

are available to go to a new

home, Ms Young said.
The open day will offer food
and drink, with picnic tables
available for anyone to use.
Ms Young said the event
was just about raising
awareness.
We will hopefully show
people the quality of the
horses available and creating awareness about the
Horse Shepherd. Hopefully
from that, we will be able to
find some of these rehabili-
tated horses a new home.

The sanctuary took in a
number of rescue horses earlier this year including the
decimated
thoroughbred
horses from a property in
Bulla.
The Horse Shepherd Equine
Sanctuary will be open to
the public from 10am to 3pm

Moorabool Libraries are

helping to feed the hungry
by waiving overdue library
fines in exchange for nonperishable food items.
The Food for Fines campaign is a partnership between The Neighbours
Place, Ballan District Health
& Care and Moorabool Shire
Councils library services.
Lerderderg and Ballan libraries will waive $2 from

library fines for every item
of packaged non-perishable
food that is donated.
The campaign provides
library users with an opportunity to reduce or eliminate
overdue fines whilst providing much-needed donations
to those in need.
Donations must have its
packaging intact with useby dates no earlier than Feb-
ruary, 2017.
Community members, who
are not members of the library or do not have overdue
library materials, are also
encouraged to donate to the
campaign, which will run
until Friday December 2.

Fabulous festival

Visitors and locals turned out in droves as the
Strawberries and Cherries festival took over
Bacchus Marsh.
The annual event exceeded expectations with
the Main Street closed for two days and taken
over by local produce stalls, community groups
and of course the traders doors welcomed the
visitors.
There was fun for the whole family with a
petting zoo, rides and live music to entertain
children and adults alike.
The weekend weather could not have been
scripted as the sunshine beamed down. A
steady flow of people occurred both days and
by lunchtime the streets were packed with
happy festival-goers.
George Watson, a father of three who brought
his family to the event for the first time was
impressed with all the activities displayed.
Ive never really stopped in Bacchus Marsh
before but a day like today is great for my kids
because they can enjoy the rides while I look
around the stalls.
Throughout the day a variety of activities were
scheduled with some unusual Tai Chi, fencing,
and even Ukulele lessons.
As the sun went down the festival continued
with special themed dinners, an open-air
cinema, and fireworks.
The festival, organised by the Bacchus Marsh
Tourism committee and helps to promote local
produce and local traders, was a bigger success
than the organisers predicted with some farms
selling out of stock on Saturday, due to the high
demand.
The town will experience a boost in tourist
numbers with many re-visits occurring before
Christmas and into the New Year.

Man
flung
from ute
A man has sustained lifethreatening injuries after

being flung from the back of
a ute at Elaine last Saturday
night.
A police media statement
said the vehicle was travelling along Dollys Creek
Road, Elaine, about 6.20pm
when the incident occurred.
The 24-year-old Laverton
man was taken to hospital.
Police have charged the
alleged driver of the ute, a
29-year-old Mt Egerton man,
with dangerous driving
causing serious injury.
He was bailed to appear
in the Ballarat Magistrates
Court on Wednesday 23
November.

Group takes action on drugs Guilty plea

in veterans
murder

On the fourth anniversary

of Sarah Cafferkeys death,
her mother, Noelle Dickson, has told the story of the
22-year-olds journey.
The story was published on
the newly-launched Moorabool Drug Action Group
(MDAG) website on Thursday November 10.
Ms Dickson tells of her
daughters joy and humour,
her athletic ability and her
creative musical and theatrical performances.
She explained Sarahs dependency on the drug ice,
but also her willingness to
seek help.
Sarah was booked into rehabilitation on November 13
2012, however her life was
brutally taken from her just
three days prior.
She was murdered by Steven James Hunter, who she
had met through a network
of friends two months before
her death.
Ms Dickson said she wanted adolescents and young
adults to know that there
were places of help and support available.
I want them to feel comfortable and supported in
seeking the help they require, she said.

I think its important to
provide a real story and a
real face, rather than talking
about probability, he said.
It was very courageous of
Noelle to allow us to post
this story and Im hoping
people will see the website,
and read the story, and see
that this is real. This is hap-
pening and if theyre struggling with their own issues,

theyve got to go out and get
help.

the MDAG website was a
perfect outlet for anyone
who didnt know where to
go or who to call.
This is a one stop shop
with all the information
they need. Rather than making several calls to different
services and agencies in the
Moorabool area, they can
jump on the website and get
the necessary contact numbers, services and help avail-
able to them, he said.

This is about prevention
and early intervention. We
want to assist a person before a situation becomes
worse and the addiction
ends up, in some cases, taking over a persons life.
MDAG aims to reduce harm
caused by alcohol and drug
to the Moorabool community through coordinated and
integrated evidence based
strategies.

A man changed over the death of Springbank war veteran

Ken Handford has changed his plea to guilty of murder.
Jonathon Cooper appeared in the Supreme Court of Victoria
on Friday November 18.
Cooper initially entered a plea of not guilty at the conclusion
of a two-day committal hearing at Ballarat Magistrates
Court in June.
The 29-year-old is accused of murdering Mr Handford, a
World War II veteran, at his Springbank home on September
14 last year.
During Fridays directions hearing Cooper entered a plea
of guilty, which comes just one week after the co-accused,
Adam Williamson also indicated a guilty plea.
The pair will also plead guilty to trespassing with the intent
to steal and the theft of four war medals and a Return from
Service badge.
Coopers lawyer said that his client hoped the matter would
be heard in a separate hearing to that of the co-accused,
however Justice Jane Dixon said it was preferable for everyone
if the joint offending was dealt with at the same time.
It is not ideal to go through the information and the victim
impact statements twice, she said.
I suppose one option would be to have one of the accused
appear via video-link, however that is not the best option.
The best option is a joint plea.
Cooper was further remanded in custody and will reappear
in Ballarat Magistrates Court on December 7 and 8.

Murder in Marsh

A Bacchus Marsh man has been fatally shot in the

driveway of his Labilliere Street home, in broad
daylight.
Emergency services were called to the property just
before 8:20am on Tuesday (May 24) after the victim,
who was sitting in his vehicle, sustained a gunshot
wound to the head.
The man, identified by police as 48-year-old Paul
Hogan, died at the scene.
His alleged girlfriend, 26-year-old Yu Tung Lo, was
arrested by Homicide Squad detectives on Wednesday
night alongside a 33-year-old Thornbury resident
Daniel Duhovic.
It is also alleged Duhovic shot the victim at pointblank range at the request of Yu Lo. The pair appeared
in Melbourne Magistrates court on Thursday, each
charged with one count of murder.
A Maddingley resident who ran past the Labilliere
Street property just moments before the incident,
said he saw a female of Asian appearance and a man
standing outside the house at around 8am.
I was jogging past and I saw an Asian lady standing
outside with another guy, I think he might have been
[the victims] flat mate, not the shooter. They had a
whole heap of boxes and bags, I thought she might have
been going overseas or something.
The resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said
the two were standing and talking quietly.
They werent arguing. When I later heard there had

been a shooting on that street, I remembered that I had
seen them standing outside the house.
The area was cordoned off for over eight hours.
In the days following Mr Hogans death, tributes
flowed into Bacchus Marsh Noodle Lovers, where he
was employed as a delivery driver.
Members of the community also took to social media
to pay their respects.
What a tragic and sad case of affairs. No one wins
here; a family have lost a dad and another family will
be grieving over the choice their loved one made.

The man who was allegedly enlisted to kill Bacchus Marsh

man Paul Hogan will face a three-day committal hearing in
June.
Daniel Duhovic, 32, appeared via video-link in the
Melbourne Magistrates Court (sitting at Melbourne County
Court) on Thursday (November 17).
The Thornbury man has been charged with the murder of
48-year-old Paul Hogan, who was fatally shot in the driveway
of his Labilliere Street home on May 24.
Duhovic will face a three-day committal hearing at the
Melbourne Magistrates Court alongside co-accused Yu
Tung Lo on June 26 next year.
A court was previously told that Duhovic shot the victim at
point-blank range with a shotgun at the request of Lo, who
allegedly lived with the deceased at the time.
It is alleged the Hong Kong national met both the deceased
and the co-accused through an online messaging application.

coach Travis Hodgson has
capped off a stellar season
after being named the AFL
Victoria senior coach of the
year.
The coveted honour, named
after football legend Gerard
Fitzgerald, was awarded to
Hodgson at the AFL Victoria Community Football
Awards on Friday (November 11).
In his first season as senior
coach, Hodgson led the Cobras to their first premiership since entering the Ballarat Football League in 1978.
He has been involved in
football for over 30 years, ten
of which were spent as both
a playing and non-playing
coach.
Hodgsons extensive coaching resume has seen him
train and prepare at the
highest level in Ballarat,
Northern and Ovens, and
Murray Football Leagues.

award was a great individual honour for Hodgson.

Drug users

social shame

Stigma surrounding drug
addiction may be contributing to the ice epidemic, according to a new study.
Research published in the

journal Drug and Alcohol
Dependence revealed that
ice users are too afraid and
ashamed to seek help.
The research is led by Craig
Cumming from The University of Australias School
of Population Health, with
researchers from Melbourne
and Curtin Universities.
Mr Cumming said that the

biggest barriers to ice users
seeking help included embarrassment, belief that help
was not needed, preferring
to withdraw without help
and privacy concerns.
He said social shame associated with accessing treatment could be worsened

by media campaigns that
sensationalised the negative
health, social and criminal
issues associated with ice
use and could be more likely
to stigmatise, rather than
help users.
Bacchus Marsh resident,

Jane Stone attended the
Australian Professional Scientific Alcohol and Drug
(APSAD) Conference in Sydney this month, where the
studies surrounding stigma
were presented.
Its a very complex issue
due to social and moral fear
and a lack of understanding, she said.
People are terrified, but its
actually normal everyday
people like you and me, its
youth, its families and people with children, and its
very real.
The shock tactics on TV do
place fear in the community,
but not everyone who uses
meth is stigmatised, and I
think [media campaigns]
prevent people seeking help
and cause isolation.
[It is] like the domestic violence shock media campaign
commercials. Imagine being
the victim of domestic violence sitting watching that
commercial with the abuser;
this makes the abuser mad
and angry and it labels
people and prevents people
seeking support.
Ms Stone said there were a
number of confidential services where people could
seek support, including the
Family Drug Help Line, Direct Line and the 24-hour
Transport Worker Hotline.
People should have the
right to privacy and confidentially, particularly in
terms of health because
substance use disorder is a
health related matter, she
said.
Here in Victoria we have

the Health Records Act that
protects privacy in regards
to health information, which
is important because prejudices can be formed based
on peoples health information, which can preclude
people from vital opportunities, including employment,
education and housing.
The prevalence of barriers
to treatment was analysed
by a research team and carried out in five countries
Australia, America, the
United Kingdom, South Africa and China.
Mr Cumming said the study
showed that intervention
encouraging users to seek
treatment needed to target
the major barriers, particularly those that addressed
and reduced the stigma associated with ice use.
Meth users often experience mental health problems, so there also needs
to be greater integration
between alcohol and other
drug support and mental
health services, he said.

Two local groups have celebrated half a decade of giving back to the community.
Ballan Community Bank
and the Ballan Farmers
Market celebrated their fifth
birthdays on November 4
and 12 respectively.
The Inglis Street Community Branch was decorated
with red and yellow balloons, with free birthday
cake and insurance comparisons offered to the public.
Bank Manager Luke Calder
said local customers had
allowed the bank to invest
over $100,000 back into the
community over the past
five years.
The local bank branch donates part of its profits, made
from products and services,
savings and investment
accounts, and home and
personal loans, back into
the communitys projects,

groups and organisations.
Successful 2016 recipients
have included the Bungaree
Bowls Club, who received
$10,000 towards constructing brand new greens; St
Brendans Primary School,
who received a $5000 grant
towards their Mountain of
Fun Run event; and Farming Moorabool, who held
their inaugural Networking
Night in October.
Similarly, the Ballan Farmers Market uses gold-coin
donations taken on entry in
order to support local community groups.
Treasurer and Acting Chair,
Carol Saffer said the past
five years had seen the volunteer run, not-for-profit
event achieve financial stability and sustainability.
It took us two-and-a-half
to three-years to get to the
stage we are at now. In the
past calendar year, we have

invested over $15,000 in
sponsorship to community,
she said.
I think the major reason
we have been able to do this
is because of our strong committee. We have six people,
all of whom are volunteers,
and we each have a specific
role, yet we work extremely
well together.
Second to that are the volunteers we have on the day.
Its the people who man the
gate or the sausage sizzle,
set up our stalls and help
to pack up the market at
the end of the day. Its a real
team, community and volunteer effort.
The Ballan Farmers Market
celebrated their five-year
feat with free sausages and
show bags. The event is held
on the second Saturday of
each month, with the last
event of the year to be held
on December 10.
Court in action

A 25-year-old who threw a

punch at a man before placing him in a headlock has
been fined $1000.
Kevin Barbara appeared
in the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates Court on Friday
(November 18), where he
pleaded guilty to unlawful
assault.
The court heard that the
accused was driving along
Grant Street, Bacchus Marsh
on July 29 of this year when
he observed the victim
standing outside the UFS
Pharmacy.
Upon seeing the victim,
Barbara allegedly performed
a U-turn in order to approach the man.
Barbara exited his vehicle
and tried to punch the victim before placing him in a
headlock, the court heard.
Once the victim was eventually let go, he was said
to have felt dizzy and experienced blurred vision,
however refused medical
treatment.
The accused told the court
that he was angry with the
victim, who had allegedly
taken advantage of his familys generosity towards him.
Magistrate Cynthia Toose
cited Barbaras clean criminal history, however said his
actions could and would not

be tolerated.
...It smacks of vigilantism
there are ways of going
about this type of situation
that dont involve putting
him in a headlock.
Mr Barbara was sentenced
to a $1000 fine without
conviction.
A man has been imprisoned

after a string of offences
across the Moorabool Shire
over the last five months.
Dylan Mitchem, 24, was alleged to have stolen a Nissan
Navara, which was found
burnt out a month later in
the Merrimu area.
In addition, Mr Mitchem
was charged with stealing
a diesel generator valued at
$1000 as well as driving a
white Holden utility vehicle
with stolen plates.
Further offences are alleged
to have occurred when Mr
Mitchem was observed driving a stolen car heading into
a local residence.
When police searched the
vehicle it was found to contain
methamphetamine,
cannabis, live ammunition
and a tomahawk axe. Police
believe he had been involved
with trafficking drugs after
exiting the residence with
$450.
The drug induced crime

spree continued resulting in
other charges including being caught with the drug ice,
a domestic dispute arising
from an altercation with his
ex-girlfriend, being the passenger during a police car
chase and being found with
a homemade gun.
The defence made many
points in support of Mr
Mitchem, citing a troubled
childhood, the support his
family offered to provide
to him upon the outcome
of the case as well as his
very strong chances of
rehabilitation.
It was also heard that Mr
Mitchem had no priors before these offences and was
a hard working Mechanic.
Mr Mitchems defence also
argued the time spent in
jail was enough but Magistrate Gregory Robinson
disagreed.
The trafficking of ice, considering the effect its having
on the communityand the
damage it has done to families in Bacchus Marsh 37
days is insufficient.
Mr Mitchem was sentenced
to five months in jail less the
37 days already served as
well as an 18 months community corrections order.
He will be set for release on
April 5 next year.

With enormous grass growth following recent rains, Councils Municipal Fire Prevention Ofcer
has begun annual inspections for re hazards on properties in Moorabool.
Inspections will commence in high risk areas and then move to Bacchus Marsh and Ballan mid
to late December.
Council is receiving numerous requests of unsightly grass on blocks in town areas and is
requesting property owners start cleaning up these blocks as a priority.
Council and emergency service agencies work together throughout the year to ensure that the
community is educated on re prevention activities.
A year round maintenance program for your property is the best way to be prepared.

URBAN GREENWASTE SERVICE
Applications are now being taken for Councils new kerbside greenwaste collection to commence
in January 2017. Residents in Residential and Low Density Residential zoned areas are eligible
to receive the service.
With approximately 15 to 20% of kerbside garbage being made up of organics, the service is part of
Moorabools strategy to reduce the amount of waste to landll. Further details about the service

The Cobras are chasing a
back-to-back
premiership
win, says Bacchus Marsh
coach Travis Hodgson.
The senior team have started pre-season training, just
two months after securing
their first BFL flag.
Hodgson said he understood going back-to-back

was no easy feat, however
believed the boys were in a
stronger position now than
last year.
When I was asked our goal
at the start of this season it
was to reach finals and at
least take on the elimination
experience; so after winning
the flag, our players, especially the younger kids, have
that experience under their
belt, he said.
Its important to now focus
on strengthening our game
and our list overall.
Hodgsons leadership will
this year be met with the experience of VFL representative Scott Sherlock, who has
signed on as assistant playing coach.
The 26-year-old has moved

over from the Werribee Tigers, where he spent seven
consecutive seasons, one
of which he held the title of
joint vice-captain.
Hodgson said Sherlock,

who has over 100 senior VFL
games to his name, would
bring a world of experience
to the game.
Weve got a pretty young

group of boys, so to add
some of Scotts experience to
the on-field leadership will
be really beneficial, he said.
He is also probably one
of the better players in this
competition.
The Cobras will also welcome back 20-year-old Ryley
Stuhldreier, who returns
to his home club after two
years with South Barwon
in the Geelong Football
League.
Ryley is a returning junior,
so the club is really excited
to get him back, Hodgson
said.
Hes been playing good
footy in a very strong Geelong league and will probably spend a lot of time playing on ball with Sherlock,
but also up forward.
Stuhldreier will join 19 yearold Quade Butt, who returns
on a full time basis following
a season with the Werribee
development squad, and
29-year-old Dean Heta from
Wodonga Raiders.
Heta was recently named in
the Ovens and Murray Football League team of the year
and according to Hodgson is
a real quality player.
He has come from a very
strong league and is around
65 in size, so will play well
as a centre half back for us,
he said.
These four additions are
all expected to have a pretty
big impact on our game.
Theyre all top line recruits.
However, the promising

additions are met with two
major losses; leading goal
kicker Damian Cupido has
moved to Bairnsdale, and
previous playing coach
Cameron Richardson has
moved to Gordon in the
CHFL.
Hodgson said it was definitely a loss to the teams

goal kicking power.
Between the two of them
they would have kicked over
90 goals, he said.
However, we received the

heads up earlier in the year
that they were going to move
on. Damian will be nearing 35-years-old and whilst
Richo is only about 29, his
body will start to let him
down at this level. From that
point of view, its probably a
good opportunity to move
forward and continue to develop our young players.
Jarrah [Maksymow] is
hanging around and he was
probably our next highest
goal-kicker. This also creates a better opportunity for
players like Hamish Coulton, who is 19, and Lachie
Phyland, who is 22, to really
flourish.
Damian and Richo were
both terrific in their efforts
to win a premiership, they
were big contributors, but
its time to move forward
and provide a greater opportunity for our young
players.

Council elections are nally
over and as more than one
councillor has noted in passing, it was a dirty election
campaign run in the East
Ward.
It all started with an unsigned letter being sent in
early October to Ballarat
media outlets 3BA 102.3,
ABC 107.9, and the Ballarat
Courier, claiming a number
of things about East Ward
candidate Moira Berry, Central Ward councillor Paul
Tatchell and the Moorabool
News.
The 3BA radio blog Ballarat
Today published a lead in
statement on their website,
to an interview with Moira
Berry, however, a correction was published after
acknowledging the letter
had false, inaccurate and
misleading information, referred to in the statement.
The radio waves continued when local Apple 98.5
FM (Bacchus Marsh Community radio) informed the
Moorabool News their regular

A severed toe and a case

of severe road rage were all
discussed in the Bacchus
Marsh Magistrates Court
this week.
Timothy Summers, the
accused, was on Coburns
Road in Melton on 11 March
at 3:30pm when the alleged
incident began.
A car owned by the victim involved in the incident, decided to overtake Mr Summers
vehicle and then slammed
on the brakes that caused Mr
Summers great fear and distress, the court heard.
The accused followed the
victim to a BP service station
near Ballan where the victim
is alleged to have exited the
vehicle. In a bizarre turn of
events Mr Summers claimed
he was acting in self defence
when he begun circling the
victim in his car.
The victims foot was run
over by Mr Summers, causing the victims toe to be
severed and then collapse,
resulting in a broken arm.
Triple 000 was called by a
witness before the altercation was eventually broken
up. It was later revealed by
police Mr Summers had consumed alcohol at the time of
the oence.
Magistrate Steven Raleigh
told the court that this
may not have occurred if
he wasnt drinking. The
Magistrate did however take
into account the accuseds

remorse for his actions.
Mr Summers was sentenced
to a community corrections
order and disqualied from
driving for 12 months.

Anne Evans is set to conduct her final performance
as Bacchus Marsh Choral
Groups music director.
With the annual Christmas
Concert to be held on Sunday December 4, Ms Evans
will step down after 16 years.
The Bacchus Marsh resident
said the Choral Group was
created in the year 2000 in
order to put on a show that
was a little bit different.
We wanted to perform not
only the old favourites, but
also a few unusual carols;
so we did, and everyone
seemed to really like it, she
said.
Its great to see people that
enjoy to sing. Singing is a
past time for any age; we

have people in the choir that
are as young as ten and some
in their 90s.
Its a choir for everyone, it
doesnt matter what walk of
life you are from or what you
do if you enjoy singing you
are welcome.

was a fantastic contribution
to the group.
She is fantastic, she keeps
us in line and we all have a
bit of fun, she said.
There are more than 30
members performing in this
years Christmas Concert. As
it is Annes last concert, some
people who have dropped
off in the past couple of years
have come back for it and
that shows that Anne is very

well thought of.
Ms Loughman said the
Christmas concert would include a number of Christmas
readings and a variety of
carols from across the world.
There will also be a free afternoon tea provided at the
Church hall following the
performance, she said.
We usually get 100 programs printed for the concert, and theres never usually any left over. People really
enjoy the show.
The Christmas Concert will
be held at St Andrews Uniting Church at 3pm. Entry
by gold coin donation, with
all proceeds donated to the
Christmas Bowl Appeal.

Managing our future population is one of Victorias
most important challenges

Eerie fire season
As the 12-month anniversary of the Scotsburn fires

approaches, Dr Rob Gordon, Clinical Psychologist
and emergency recovery specialist returned to speak
with communities.
The visit last Thursday at Buninyong Town Hall was
Dr Gordons third to Scotsburn since the December
2015 fire, which destroyed 12 homes and 4,000
hectares of farmland around Scotsburn, Clarendon
and Lal Lal.
Dr Gordon spoke to a small group of residents about
their recovery, and preparation for the upcoming fire
season.
Dr Gordon said an approaching fire season could
bring the trauma and emotions back to the surface.
For many it can be like the fire was yesterday.
I spoke to the group about how they are travelling
and how they can support each other in their
preparation for the upcoming fire season.
Dr Gordon said the emotional preparation of this
community is just as important as the physical works
to reduce fire risk to homes and properties.
Mayor Cr David Edwards said as a shire, he was
pleased that Dr Gordon had worked so closely with
this community.
Our priority has been assisting this community
to recover and move forward and we believe the
evenings with Dr Gordon have been a great support
to affected residents.
Western Water is warning Bacchus

Marsh residents to have an
independent water supply ready if
they plan to stay and defend their
home this fire season.
Managing Director of Western
Water Neil Brennan said if electricity
is cut or water infrastructure is
affected by fire, pumps and other
equipment might fail, cutting the
mains water supply.
If there is extremely high demand
for water from customers and the
CFA during a fire, water pressure
may also drop.
We are already doing all we can
to prepare for summer, with backup
generators ready and water storage
tanks at high capacity to cope in case
of fire.
Residents can also help the
community to be prepared for fire
season by adopting a fire hydrant.
We ask residents that have a fire
hydrant near their home to keep
it free of debris and vegetation,
and if you think a hydrant needs
maintenance, call Western Water to
report it, Mr Brennan said.
Western Water encourages residents
to consult their local CFA about their
options for an independent water
supply and plan ahead.

Wheres the exit room?

As the age old debate on Euthanasia continues to roll on;
I thought it time to put the
right to die into some form
of subjective Perspective.
Being that we dont have a
choice in entering into this
World it seems ironic that
we dont have a choice on
our exit either! Personally
I am pro Euthanasia, and
whilst the critics may argue
to the extremes that its playing God; I would say that
terminating life is anything
but a game.
I read some statistics that
suggested that of the people
who contemplate Euthanasia, only 3% would actually follow through; I am not
sure whether that enhances
or detracts from the debate,
or in fact how the experts
come to that conclusion,
but it seems a reasonable
hypothesis based on whats
known.
It seems to me that the debate seems to focus around
the person doing the task as
opposed to the person that

is ultimately making the
request, and in reality the
process of expediting termination of a persons life is a
common occurrence, regardless of religion, philosophy
or the law.
Whilst there are literally
hundreds of circumstances
where the lines blur, there is
no reason why the lines that
dont blur couldnt come to
a reasonable, if not sensible
conclusion; its not like we
are talking about having a
bad day and strolling into
your local GP and asking for
a shot of Potassium Chloride.
I am not suggesting this is
not a complex argument, but
it is an argument worth having; we have become experts
in telling people how to live,
and now we want to tell
them how to die.
Euthanasia is illegal in Australia, but for a very short
time between 1995 and 1996,
it was legal in the Northern
Territory; under the Rights
of the Terminally ill Act

1995, it was passed by a vote
of 15 to 10 and a year later a
repeal bill was brought before the Parliament and was
defeated 14 to 11.
It wasnt long after that the
Commonwealth
Government threw its hat into the
ring, introduced the Euthanasia Laws Act 1997 to remove the powers of all Territories to legalise Euthanasia,
including Norfolk Island.
The powers of the Northern
Territory, the ACT and Norfolk Island legislatures, unlike the State legislatures are
not guaranteed by the Australian constitution and may
be amended or over-ruled by
the Commonwealth.
Its worth noting that during this period three people
had already died through
physician assisted suicide
under the legislation, aided
by Dr Philip Nitschke, a well
known campaigner of the
time.
The closest we had come

since to having Euthanasia
legalised by a State was in
Tasmania in 2013; when the
Greens voluntary Euthanasia bill was narrowly defeated in the Tasmanian House
of Assembly by a vote of 1312; both of the major Parties
were allowed a conscience
vote, all ten Liberals voted
against, Labor splitting
seven in favour and three
against, and all five Greens
voted for their own bill.
Last week the South Australian State Government
tested the waters again,
when Labors Speaker of
the House Michael Atkinson used his casting vote to
knock down the Death and
Dignity bill under a conscience vote tied at 23 for
and against.
Thats the politics of this
thing, and I dont for one
moment suggest that this is
not a difficult decision for
politicians to make; nor am
I judging those that voted

against the bill, but there is
a big difference between a
conscience vote and a reality
vote for those dealing with
the problem on a personalised level.
Whilst I am loathed to draw
comparisons between the
animal kingdom and humanity, it cant be ignored;
whilst the mindsets may be
different, the realities are
comparable; we are not just
talking about losing the will
to live, and quality of life
must be a consideration.
People are all unique, and
their capacity to deal with
certain events or situations
needs the same unique and
compassionate view point;
the sticking point seems to
be on the decision maker.
If a person doesnt have the
capacity to make the request,
or pre-empt before losing
capacity; who of us has the
right to end a life?
For every argument for
Euthanasia there is an argument against and the votes

for and against in legislation
appear to run out the same;
we cant walk in the footprints of the terminally ill or
totally incapacitated, but we
can acknowledge their wishes to die on their own terms.
We are continually edging
closer to legalised Euthanasia, some Countries have
already crossed the bridge
and are still grappling with
the decision; there is no perfect solution and the halfway house between life and
death is life.
There are hundreds of people every day that fight to
live and fight to die, in the
perfect world we could all
set our used by date, but
its not perfect world. I may
not have had a choice in the
delivery room, but I would
hope that when its time to
go, I can enter the exit room
of my own free will, not the
will of others!
Homes selling faster
The latest REIV data shows

many regional Victorian
towns are enjoying solid
spring sales with improved
days on market over the past
month and strong improvement shown over the past
year.
With the majority of Victorian homes sold by private
sale, the median number of
days a home takes to sell is a
key market indicator for this
type of sale. Any decline in
the median number of days
on market generally indicates increasing interest in a
town or region.

51 days, compared to 71 days
in September.
The beachside towns of Indented Heads, Apollo Bay,
Barwon Heads and Queenscliff also recorded improvements in their private sale

Meanwhile, over the past 12
months the Goulburn Valley town of Numurkah experienced one of the states
strongest improvements in
median days on market, falling to 102 days on market.
This was down from 246 for

the same period last year.
Homes also sold faster
this year in Cape Patterson, down 78 days over the
year to a median of 96 days;
Maldon, down 102 days to a
median of 73 days; and Armstrong Creek, near Torquay,
which dropped from 91 to
50 days.
Solid declines in the number of days a home took to
sell were also recorded in
Cowes, down from 128 days
last year to 90.5 days on market; Echuca, down from 80
days to a median of 47.5; and
Anglesea, falling from 86 to
55 days.
Suburbs in the Geelong
area also sold faster than the
same period last year, making them some of Victorias
best-selling private markets.

11 ends, Glenys Kays rink trailed 2-12
after six ends, and Bob Delaneys rink
trailed 10-23 after 16 ends, making
the composite scoreboard look rather
unwell for Avenue. However, to each
rinks credit they all fought back admirably after the tea break, ultimately only
going down by one, three and seven
shots respectively.
The saving grace for Avenue was Peter
Glass rink winning 31-17, which was
just enough to cover the other three
rinks, thus giving Avenue a four shot
overall win and a valuable 12 points, a

Avenue won all four rinks by a massive
73 shots to cement their position on top
of the ladder.

rink with a crushing 43-10 win, closely
followed by Ray Humphreys rink 33-17

but picked up 12 shots in the last five
ends to win by five shots.

The Darley Lions have put

themselves in arguably the
box seat after the first day
of their top-of-the-table Ballarat Cricket Association
First XI match against Mount
Clear last Saturday.
After Mount Clear won
the toss and elected to bat,
the Lions were able to bowl
the Mounties out for 214 on
the small St Patricks College ground, then survive
a tricky 35 minute batting
session at the end of the
day to finish the day at 0/30,
chasing another 185 runs for
victory.
Darley captain/coach Heath
Pritchard was delighted to
contain the Mounties to just
214 on a small ground, especially when they looked
to be cruising earlier in the
game at 4/171.
I was super happy with the
day, Pritchard remarked after the days play.
At stages there it looked
like they were going to get
300 plus, to be perfectly
frank.
We hung in there, and
even though we didnt get
wickets early they played
and missed a lot, they had

to play big shots to actually score, and the size of the
ground didnt help us our
spinners had balls that were
mis-hits that went for six
and the like.
Club champion Matthew
Cape took the first three
wickets of the game, returning figures of 3/32 from his
eleven overs for the day,
before Pritchard returned
for a second spell to wreak
havoc through the Mounties middle and lower order
to claim his first five-wicket
haul of the season, returning
figures of 5/53 from his 17.4
overs.
The Lions then were asked
to bat for eleven overs to
finish the days play, and
whilst they survived the day
without the loss of a wicket,
it wasnt without a casualty
as Pritchard, who opened
the batting alongside Lachie
Herring, was forced to retire
hurt after surviving the first
21 minutes of the session.
I took off for a single and
hurt my hamstring, just gave
it a little tweak, Pritchard
said.
The Lions Second XI are
in a similar position to the
senior side, having bowled
Coronet City out for 212 in
the first day of their two-day
game, and batted for eight
overs at the end of the day to
be 0/18 at stumps, with Ben
Longhurst on 9 and Corey
Beaton on 4.
Darleys Third XI will also

have some runs to chase
next weekend, after dismissing North Ballarat for 268 in
the first day of their two-day
game at the Hub, and survived four overs at the end
of play to be 0/4 at the close
of the day. Josh Fitzgerald
was the pick of the bowlers, with figures of 4/65 off
21 overs, whilst Regan King
took three wickets and Daniel Hynes two.
Darleys Fourth XI celebrated their first win for the
year in their one-day fixture
against Mount Clear, scoring
6/234 off their 40 overs, then
restricting the Mounties to
8/117 off their allotted overs.

losing six wickets on their
way to a score of 137 a
score theyll be confident of
defending with the ball next
Saturday.
Darley started strongly,
and at one stage were 1/98
and looking like a big score
was on the cards after Bryce
Galea and captain Corey
Beaton put on 44 runs for the
opening wicket before Galea
was run out for 19, allowing
Mitch Ward to join Beaton
and take the score to 1/98
before Ward was dismissed
for 32. Beaton was the last
wicket to fall, run out after
scoring 55, his first half-cen-
tury of the season.

14 & Under First XI v Elaine
After batting first, the Lions
scored 5/64 from their 25
overs, with Lane Havelberg
and Hayden Nash both scoring 11 runs and Will Johnson unbeaten on 12, before
Elaine scored 8/87 from their
25 overs, with James Martindale taking two wickets
and a host of bowlers taking one each. The Lions
will be looking to knock up
a similar score when they
re-commence their innings
next Saturday morning before looking to take the last
two Elaine wickets cheaply
in a bid to inflict Elaines
first loss of the season upon
them, and hopefully move
into the top four with their
second win.

Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics

Due to the Region Relays being held on Saturday, the Bacchus
Marsh little athletics meet was held on Friday evening.
A modified program was conducted with each athlete
competing in four events. In perfect conditions, over 350
PBs were recorded. Amazing numbers, considering limited
events were held.A standout performance from Nelson
Banigo (Eagles) set two new Centre records. Nelson broke
the Under 8 200 metres, which had previously stood for 27
years, running a blistering time of 33.05 secs. Nelson also
bettered his 100 metres, setting a new record of 15.31 secs.
Jarvis Miles (Blues) showed his recent hard training is paying
off, breaking his own Under 13 Discus record, throwing 33.33
metres.
Jarvis Miles and William Lalor will be representing
School Sports Victoria at the Sports Australia Track & Field
Championships in Sydney this weekend. Jarvis will be
competing in the 12 year old Discus, while William will be
competing in the 11 year old High Jump and Discus.
Bacchus Marsh had 24 teams represent the Centre at the
Western Metro Region Relay Championships held at the Mixed Under 11 4x200m team
Melton Athletics Track on Saturday.
The Relay Squad put in many hours of training leading up to
the Championships with all coaches volunteering their time
to ensure the athletes were well prepared for the day.
The Under 11 team excelled, claiming three Regional medals.
The Mixed 4 x 200m and 4 x 100m teams both won Gold
medals and the Under 11 4 x 100m girls team placed third
to claim Bronze. The Under 14 girls held on for Bronze, after
a close finish in their 4 x 100m event. The Under 11 mixed
teams have now qualified for the State Championships to be
held at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park on December 17.
This Saturday is the Centre annual Multi Event program
commencing at 8.30am. Athletes will compete in five events
(hurdles, sprint, distance, discus & long jump) gaining
points in each event. ALL five events must be competed
in to have completed the Multi Event. If one event is not
competed in, that athlete will be deemed ineligible to win
any award. Trophies are awarded to the winners of each age
group with medals for second and third. Presentations will
be made at the following weeks competition.
