Introduction

Supervised Industrial Training (SIT) is a program that the colleges and

universities require their students to take as a part of their curriculum. This is an
opportunity for the students wherein they can apply the knowledge and theories
theyve learned from school. It aims to train and orient the students about their future
career, what possible responsibilities involved in the actual work. The workplace
becomes the development area for the students to improve their skills and learn
more about the working circumstances. This skill development familiarizes the
students on hands-on work experiences on the field of their study. Likewise, SIT
develops the interpersonal communications and relationship to other people.
Caparal Appliances & Furniture is owned by Engr. Apolinar S. Caparal and
Mrs. Jocelyn E. Caparal. They have been from rags to riches they first sell small
merchandise to their neighbor and friends through installment basis. Having
separate careers, they worked during day-off selling appliances and later due to
continued success Mrs. Caparal resigned in her job and focus on their business.
Through their hardwork they gained the dignity and trust of the employees, agents
and customers the company legally registered the business on March 1995 to fill the
trust of market. Through the companys continuing success they spice up the
appliances business by selling furniture. Besides, the company are also accepting
services such as upholstery, computer repairs, aircon cleaning and repair and
customizing furniture to provide the customers what exactly they want, Through later
improvement the companys Engineering Department are now focusing on putting up
branches all over Cavite of the company as well as renovations for the
improvements of existing branches. Presently, Caparal Appliances & Furniture had
13 branches across Cavite.

Job Performed in the Company

Engr. Rey Goco, Head Engineer of the Engineering Department of Caparal

Appliances and Furniture assigned me to together with my colleagues. I
supervised the existing construction of mezzanine in the annex building of the main
branch, I need to check the attendance of the workers, and monitors the equipment
and materials they need based on their work schedule. Whenever there is request
for materials, I need to prepare purchase orders of the specified needed materials.
During deliveries of construction materials, we checked the quantity and inspect the
quality of materials. Through the progress of construction, I was assigned to prepare
an electrical plan for the mezzanine through Computer Aided Design (CAD). After the
project was finished, we encode all the receipts of purchased material, this is for the
auditing of all the expenses of the project.
Engr. Rey and I went to Imus to measure an existing building for renovation
and extension. The area will be another Caparal branch soon. I draw the Measured
Area in a piece of scratch and then when we are back in the office I transfer it in
AutoCAD and print a copy to present to Engr. Rey and Engr. Caparal.
The next project is putting-up another branch in Lancaster Subdivision Imus,
Cavite. In prior to that, I designed the column and footing detail and I also monitor
the workers, helped our electrician on installing the wires, conduits and switches. We
need to finish it in a limited span of time for the planned Grand Opening of Lancaster
branch.
Another project of the company is to construct a housing project located in
Bucal, Dasmarias City. We completed the existing plans for the said project,
including the architectural, structural and electrical plans of the project. In addition to
that, I present the estimated cost of materials of the project.
We visited the Langkaan Branch for the inspection of the wet stand pipe that
is used for the fire safety requirements.

We are also planning for the relocation of the Human Resources (HR) Office.
We have prepared for the electrical and architectural plans of the said office.

Experience Earned

1. Knowledge (Principles, Theories and Concepts)

As a Civil Engineering Technology (CET) student, we have the
knowledge about the construction field that may use or apply in our Training. For
example in Electrical, we know how to compute the loads and watts of a circuit, the
standard sizes of wires and conduits, what is the required ampere of a circuit breaker
should be used. In architectural, we are familiar with the minimum openings of doors
and windows, minimum height of a building. In concrete and masonry, we know what
proportion mixture of cement, sand and gravel should be used in a specific part of a
building, what sizes of CHB or Concrete Hollow Blocks should use. In structural, we
are able to know what should size of Reinforcement bars should be use, depending
on the size of column, beam or footing.

As a Civil Engineering Technology student there are many things that you can
learn in school that you can apply in job, Like in Plumbing in school we learn the
process or the proper way of installing pipe, The size, kind and location of pipe
wherever it needs to install and the ways how it can be very useful and preserve its
good quality. In Electrical we also consider the size or the thickness of wire that we
may use in line or circuit, the value of Ampere of Breaker and the proper way of
splicing or connecting the wires. In Concrete and Masonry the kind of cement
mixture that we use in column, beam, slab, mortar, and plastering, The size of
Concrete Hollow Blocks (CHB) use for example, 4 CHB use in partition wall and
non-load bearing wall or walls that caries only its own weight, 5 and 6 CHB use in
firewall and load bearing walls or walls that caries weight like beam and slab, The
dimension of beam and column, the diameter of Reinforcement Steel Bars (RSB)

use and measurements or spacing for wall and slab. You can learn those things in
school and you can apply in job but there also knowledge that you can learn while
undergoing Supervised Industrial Training (SIT) like in things and materials you can
only see at construction site, also the terms that they used in actual work, which I am
not so familiar. One of the most important thing that I learn is talent alone is not
enough, it must come with hard work and self-discipline in order to success.

2. Skill (Applied and Developed)

2.1 Skills learned in school that was useful in job.
At school we have an actual practice of layouting, surveying, estimating
bill of materials and how to use and read a complete plan. Those skills are important
especially in our field of work. By those we can understand all the things that happen
in the field of construction.

2.2 Skill that in the company while on training

The one important thing that I learn in the training is the technique at
actual work, because not exactly 100% that the whole plan will be follow, during
construction there will be changes and adjustments, and also because of that not all
the time we depend on plan.
