Magnifying glass.
Signs- ear (hear), hand (touch) and eye (sight)- encouraging
children to think about what they can hear, feel and see.
Paper and pens.
Books:
Messy Jellyfish.
Way down deep in the deep blue sea.
The smallest turtle.
I spy under the sea.
The three little fish and the big bad shark.

These books encourage children to recognise, count and read (early

literacy skills).
Aim:

Children will be provoked by the materials on the table and will

explore these materials in multiple ways using their senses (sight,
sound and touch).
Visually- children will explore the materials visually using their eyes
and their magnifying glass; looking at features and recognising
similarities, differences and colours.
Physically- children will be able to touch the materials and feel
different textures- recognising the terms smooth and rough.
Hearing- children will be able to hold the shells up to their ear to
listen to the ocean. Children will also be able to put these materials
in an empty bottle to shake.
Questions- What did you see? What did you feel? What did you
hear? Can you draw what you see?

Engaging:
This will engage childrens curiosity as the learning environment is
themed under the sea and the materials are from a beach. After a
discussion with my supervising teacher, children havent used a beach
theme provocation space- therefore it will be an exciting and new

experience. Signs with pictures- to prompt childrens thinking (ear, hand

and eye).
Placing:
This provocation space will be going on a table near the carpet where my
teacher creates provocation spaces; usually including a puzzle, book and
theme (Picasso etc).
-

Children know they are able to use the materials on this table.
Children know the expectation- materials that are taken away from
the table need to be returned.

Intentional:

The aesthetics of this table have been thought about to engage and
excite young learners; thinking about colour, texture and different
ways to use these materials.
As the table is close to the carpet children will have the opportunity
to decide whether they would like to touch the materials.
The table is open- therefore children will have a choice.
Children will not be given specific instructions or time to use the
table, it is their choice what they do, which material/s they use and
how much time they spend on it: prompted by the senses signs.
Observations of children using this table will be noted.
