Integrating Oracle Warehouse Management

System with Process Manufacturing
Achieving Efficiencies Utilizing Oracle OPM with WMS
Author: Dale Welsh Sr. Supply Chain Consultant, Emtec, Inc.

In todays process manufacturing environment, the need for robust software

to provide flexibility and real-time transactional capabilities is apparent. The
challenges our clients face require end-to-end visibility across all supply/
demand channels to achieve optimal production flows. Through the use of
Oracle Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Applications, companies can
now leverage real-time Radio Frequency (RF) transactions through Oracle
Process Manufacturing (OPM) and Oracle Warehouse Management System
(WMS) to improve efficiencies. Manufacturers can manage complexity
and drive business process efficiency through a rich rules-based system

requirements. Too often, production and logistics operate in segmented

production up or down while meeting their challenging sourcing and storage

silos with disjointed data signals between the two operations. The need to
collect accurate inventory data from picking to putaway and throughout all
key manufacturing processes is key to successful production and logistics
operations. Manufacturers are looking to gain efficiencies with inventory
visibility in production runs from point of batch creation to completion with
continuation through the logistical cycle. Production environments change
rapidly and real time data and inventory visibility is critical to production
success. Oracle OPM / WMS provides an integrated solution that allow
operations to perform all end to end transactions via a mobile wireless
solution that drives process efficiency.

BUSINESS PROCESS EFFICIENCY

Oracle OPM with WMS allows RF capabilities for core logistics and
production transactions with an emphasis on real time data collection
and availability. This information is immediately available in OPM and
WMS to improve inventory visibility within batch production while also
providing signals to the warehouse for picking and putaway tasks. Having
that integration between OPM and WMS through the use of mobile
apps (RF technology) provides greater worker mobility and productivity.
Manufacturers can effortlessly improve production operations, WIP
inventory visibility, and respond to production supply/demand shifts.
Many process manufacturers have the need for complete end to end
lot traceability from receipt of raw ingredients through shipping of finish

products. With the use of RF devices, lot information can be recorded

with simple bar code scanning, reducing key stroke error and enabling full
genealogy with traceability. Wireless transactions allow operators to pick
and issue ingredients to a batch on planned intervals, reducing the need to
store large quantities of material on the production floor. Additionally, real
time component consumption and product completion can be performed on
RF devices. Oracle OPM and WMS bridges the gap between operations and

requirements

RULES-BASED CONFIGURATION
Oracle WMS comes with a rich rules-based engine that provides hundreds
of combinations using seeded attributes and the ability to embed SQL
expressions within a rule. This configurable function allows picking and
putaway rules to be created which meet the most complex of business
requirements. The use of Oracles Mobile Supply Chain Application with
WMS provides real time scanning for key processes such as picking,
putaway, WIP Issue, WIP completion, cycle counting and shipping.
OPM batch picking and putaway rules can be configured in WMS to
accommodate different requirements for different product groups or even
different production lines. Today, integration with OPM and Oracle WMS
is a business necessity in the process industry. Both OPM and WMS are
designed to work together as a single out-of-the-box solution with flexible

SEAMLESS INTEGRATION
Oracle OPM with WMS provide a seamless integration from point of receipt
through shipping of the final product. With the use of RF devices, operators
can transmit transactional data real time from wherever the product resides.
No longer do operators have to walk back and forth between desktop
terminals to perform transactions. Efficiency through barcode scanning and
label printing not only reduces key stroke error, it also reduces transactional
cycle time thereby improving operational performance. Wireless integration
allows machine operators to perform WIP issues, WIP completions, as well
as batch resource and step transactions. Access to real time data provides
operations the ability to plan and drive warehousing and production
activities in a proactive mode as opposed to a reactive mode. You can
now bring greater visibility to your enterprise and real time transactional
efficiencies by leveraging WMS in your OPM EBS solution.
