Dragging out the frocks
Playing dress-ups is not just for kids.

Residents at the Ballan Aged Care facility are going above and beyond
creating outfits for their upcoming High Tea afternoon with the theme,
Priscilla Queen of the Desert.
Matthew Grindrod, Secretary of the Ballan Autumn Festival Association
explains how it all came about.
The residents participated in the 2016 Autumn Festival parade, loved it
and decided they couldnt wait until next years parade dress up. So the
Priscilla event was born.
They have all been busy making their own creations, decorations, art and
craft for this Sundays event.
It really has given them a new lease of life, improved self esteem and just
downright enjoyment.
Residents will be having a table centerpiece competition and have plans to
decorate the Ballan Community Bank bus in the Priscilla theme.
The BAF committee have been overwhelmed with the enthusiasm and
excitement from the residents and look forward to seeing all the frocks and
jocks, Mr Grindrod said.
The Priscilla Queen of the Desert High Tea event will be held this Sunday
20 November, 2.30-4.30pm in the Ballan Mechanics Hall. Limited tickets
cost $15 per person and are available from the Ballan Aged Care Hostel,
D&M Traders or Opportunity on Inglis. Dress code DRAG!

The Ballan and Buninyong Cricket

Clubs both took time recently to sign a
commemorative message book.
The Mullagh Wills Foundations
Journey to the G book marks the 150th
anniversary of the Aboriginal cricket
team travelling from Western Victoria
to Melbourne to play the Melbourne
Cricket Club at the MCG on Boxing

Day, 1866.
Team captains Mick Nolan (Ballan)
and Dan Kitchen (Buninyong) were
snapped with the well-travelled book
as it stopped at Ballan.
The book was launched in March and
is travelling through towns for signing
before being presented at the Boxing
Day test.
The Foundation hoped that the journey

will provide an opportunity to bring
together communities across Victoria
and to recognise the contributions
different cultures have made to the
nation through sport.
The project will culminate with a
ceremony at the MCG on Boxing Day
2016 at the Australia v Pakistan Test
Match.

Guilt
plea in
murder
case

One of the men accused of

killing Springbank man Ken
Handford, in a botched robbery, intends to plead guilty.
Adam Williamson appeared in the Supreme
Court of Victoria on Thursday November 11, where he
indicated a guilty plea.
Williamson is accused of
murdering Mr Handford,
a 90 year-old World War II
veteran, at his Springbank
home on September 14 last
year.
The 40year-old will also
plead guilty to trespassing
with the intent to steal and
the theft of four war medals
and a Return from Service
badge.
Williamson was further
remanded in custody and
will reappear in Ballarat for
a plea hearing on December
7 and 8.
Co-accused Jonathon Cooper, 29, also appeared in court,
however Justice Jane Dixon
adjourned the matter to a
further directions hearing
on Friday November 18.

More than just a flower show

Roses, fresh colourful flowers and Christmas wreaths

are only a snapshot of what
you can expect to see at the
Ballan Red Cross Flower
Show.
The popular event, to be
held on Friday November
25, will showcase a variety of floral works alongside
hand-made crafts, jams and
marmalades.
Red Cross volunteer Mary
Williams said community
members were invited to enter their favourite works into
the show in order to go into
the running to win the Red
Cross perpetual plate.
It is free to enter and the
winner will have their name
engraved on the plate alongside the winners from previous years, she said.
The five main classes of the
flower show include roses,
arranged floral works, novice floral art, cut flowers and
pot plants.
Held in the Ballan Mechanics Hall, community members can also enjoy the annual luncheon put on entirely
by Red Cross Volunteers.
The luncheon will welcome
special guest author and artist Tor Roxburgh.
Ms Williams said the popular Red Cross craft stall
would also be available,
with special items donated

by Red Cross volunteers Bev
Bush and Marilyn Baker.
Ms Baker said she had spent
a lot of time putting together
the crafted characters, which
range from dainty dolls
to Red Cross nurses and
animals.
I always have to be making
something; I cant just sit in
front of the TV, she said.
The craft stall is always
quite successful as people
can buy things in time for
Christmas, with all proceeds
going directly to Red Cross.
The Ballan Red Cross Flower Show and Luncheon will
commence at 12 noon on
Friday November 25. Flower
exhibits must be left at the
hall between 8:15am and
10:30am on the day.

Blackwood locals are well

aware of the fire risks in their
area and now, its time to
pass the local knowledge on
to Forest Fire Management
Victoria.
Changes to fire management zones are planned,
and feedback from locals
is expected to help find the
balance between increasing
burn-offs, and maintaining
the local eco systems.
Using bushfire computer
modelling, FFMV simulated
more than 8,000 bushfires
across the West Central
Landscape to determine
areas of highest risk, with
Blackwood listed among the
high-risk areas.
Risk Landscape Manager,
David Watson, said towns
such as Blackwood as well
as Daylesford, Hepburn
Springs, Trentham, Castlemaine and the GisborneWoodend corridor are all at
high risk.
Its important people who
live and work in these areas have the opportunity to
share their experience and
knowledge with us as we
work to improve the effectiveness of our fire management strategies, Mr Watson
said.
We want to hear from
individuals and community groups about what they
think the proposed zone

changes might mean for
their local areas, as well as
any local knowledge about
landscape values we may
need to consider.
He said that changes to Fire
Management Zones might
mean altering the frequency
of fuel reduction work including planned burns on
public land.
Its important we communicate that to the community
and hear what they have to
say.
Importantly, the revised
zones must ensure that our
annual fuel management
program is guided by a riskbased approach and that
it contributes to an overall
risk target of 70 per cent for
Victoria.
If the bushfire risk is at 70
per cent, bushfire fuels have
been reduced by about onethird of the maximum risk.
The proposed zone changes
are designed to provide the
highest level of bushfire protection that Forest Fire Management Victoria can offer
while reducing the impacts
on natural ecosystems and
other important assets and
values.

Go Off-Tap with festival

The stage is set for this
years annual Youth Fest
with a killer line up thats
been teed up by Moorabools
own youth.
Melbourne bands Mesa
Cosa, Hollow Everdaze,
Milwaukee Banks, Ramshackle Army, Cable Ties,
and Destrends will take to
the stage on Saturday (November 19).
The event will run alongside the Strawberries and
Cherries Festival and will
see a range of food vans and
attractions such as a skate
competition, graffiti workshop, gaming zone, and laser tag.
Moorabool Shire Council
youth development officer,
Andrew Dyson said members of the Off-Tap FReeZa
program had been organising the event since May.
There are 20 group members aged between 14 and 22
who have taken on the roles
of marketing, event management, graphic design
and promoting, he said.
Theyve really organised
the whole thing, we just
guide them along.
Group member 19-year-old
Matthew McEgan, was the
first Off-Tap member to join
the group three years ago
and has this year led the

When I was younger there
wasnt a lot of music events
held here in Bacchus Marsh,
meaning we had to travel to
Melbourne, he said.
Something like this makes
music a lot more accessible to
younger people and I think
that is really important.
Ive been helping with the
organisation of the event
for a few years now and its
been really great. This year
weve seen an increase in
members, which I think has
come from the success of last
years event.
Mr Dyson said having a
youth event organised by
the Moorabools younger
generation was beneficial to
the whole community.
Its great because those
running it can provide an
event that young people in
Moorabool really enjoy. Its
also a really big learning
curve for the guys running
it.
They can demonstrate and
build on a number of invaluable skills, he said.
Last years event saw
around 550 people attend,
which was actually really

good as the year before we
were lucky to see half that
amount. The event is definitely growing and thats because the Off-Tap members
are producing a really solid
event that people actually
want to come to.
Youth Fest 2K16 will be
held at Rotary Park in Bacchus Marsh on Saturday
November 19 from 10am to
7pm. Bands start from 3pm
and is a smoke, alcohol and

Cleaning up the dirty campaign

Council elections are finally
over and as more than one
councillor has noted in passing, it was a dirty election
campaign run in the East
Ward.
It all started with an unsigned letter being sent in
early October to Ballarat
media outlets 3BA 102.3,
ABC 107.9, and the Ballarat
Courier, claiming a number
of things about East Ward
candidate Moira Berry, Central Ward councillor Paul
Tatchell and the Moorabool
News.
The 3BA radio blog Ballarat
Today published a lead in
statement on their website,
to an interview with Moira
Berry, however, a correction was published after
acknowledging the letter
had false, inaccurate and
misleading information, referred to in the statement.
The radio waves continued when local Apple 98.5
FM (Bacchus Marsh Community radio) informed the
Moorabool News their regular
weekly reading of news in
the local publication was not
to occur during the election
campaign.
We cant be seen to be
favouring one candidate
over another, a committee
member told the Moorabool
News.

The Moorabool News has
appeared on Apple 98.5 FM
every Thursday morning at
10am for nearly two years,
providing a brief overview
of the hot topics covered in
the paper each week to their
listeners.
Editor Helen Tatchell said
she was a bit baffled by their
approach.
To be told that we could
not go to air because Paul,
your husband, and Moira,
your employee, are running
(as candidates for council),
is completely puzzling.
I still dont understand
their judgement by association. We only ever read out
fleeting snippets from each
weekly edition, she said.
Controversially the local radio station featured
photos of candidates Tonia
Dudzik and Margaret Scarff
campaigning at a shopping
centre and a local market on
their (Apple) facebook page.
Both candidates are presenters on Apple 98.5FM.
Nothing to explain here.
Apple admin posted our
pics to the Apple facebook

page, read a post by Ms
Dudzik, also an administrator for the Apple facebook
page.
After the election result
was declared more attacks
surfaced.
Cr. Dudzik announced on
her facebook page during
the elections I was attacked
on social media a number of
times.
Cr Dudzik refused to elaborate further on the context of
these attacks.
I can not comment on the
matter, she said in an email
response.
A complaint has been sent
to the Australian Press
Council by Cr Dudzik for a
Free Speech Denied post on
the Moorabool News facebook page.
Unsuccessful East candidate Moira Berry revealed
a damning text message
from Cr Dudzik, after Ms
Berry put Dudzik last on her
preferences.

Cr Dudzik was given the opportunity to reply if her text
was an attack on Ms Berry,
but refused to comment.
Court in Action
A severed toe and a case

of severe road rage were all
discussed in the Bacchus
Marsh Magistrates Court
this week.
Timothy Summers, the
accused, was on Coburns
Road in Melton on 11 March
at 3:30pm when the alleged
incident began.
A car owned by the victim involved in the incident, decided to overtake Mr Summers
vehicle and then slammed
on the brakes that caused Mr
Summers great fear and distress, the court heard.
The accused followed the
victim to a BP service station
near Ballan where the victim
is alleged to have exited the
vehicle. In a bizarre turn of
events Mr Summers claimed
he was acting in self defence
when he begun circling the
victim in his car.
The victims foot was run
over by Mr Summers, causing the victims toe to be
severed and then collapse,
resulting in a broken arm.
Triple 000 was called by a
witness before the altercation was eventually broken
up. It was later revealed by
police Mr Summers had consumed alcohol at the time of
the offence.
Magistrate Steven Raleigh
told the court that this
may not have occurred if
he wasnt drinking. The
Magistrate did however take
into account the accuseds
clean criminal history and
remorse for his actions.
Mr Summers was sentenced
to a community corrections
order and disqualified from
driving for 12 months.
The victims toe was successfully reattached.

Greenwaste
trial set to
launch

Urban residents will soon be able to sign up

to councils new opt-in greenwaste collection
service.
The initial trial period for the user-pays
collection is $50, from January to June next
year, plus the one-off cost of purchasing a bin.
A local contractor, Rowsley-based KG Coy &
Sons, has been engaged to provide the service
and greenwaste will be collected fortnightly
via a 240-litre bin and taken to a specialised
composting facility at Mount Wallace to be
processed for landscaping and agricultural
purposes.
Our residents told us through a community
engagement process that they would use
a greenwaste service, so were happy to be
providing it, on a trial basis initially, said
councils General Manager of Infrastructure,
Phil Jeffrey.
It forms part of Moorabools strategy to
reduce the amount of waste to landfill,
which will ultimately reduce landfill costs
for Council and ratepayers, as well as lessen
environmental impacts and extend the life of
existing landfills.
Annual costs of the service are likely to be
$80 to $100 a year, applied to the Annual Rate
and Valuation Notice, plus the one off cost of
a new bin.
The cost is dependent on take up rates and
the more residents that apply for the service,
the more cost effective the service will
become.

residents in eligible areas, with applications
also able to be made by visiting Councils

Merrimu Reservoir looked to the sky for

water and the sky answered.
The reservoir, located in Coimadai,

received around 17,000 million litres of
water following a wet two months.
Western Waters General Manager,

Graham Holt said Merrimu was back up to
around 60 per cent of capacity, up from a
low of less than 10 per cent in July.
This will enable us to switch customers
in Bacchus Marsh back to their local water
supply in November, he said.
Long Forest and Toolern Vale will also be
switched to Merrimu, while Myrniong will
remain on its usual drinking water supply
from Pykes Creek Reservoir.
Bacchus Marsh is connected to both the

Merrimu and Melbourne drinking water
supply systems to ensure a secure water
supply at all times.
Mr Holt said it was normal for customers
to notice a change in taste or hardness
when water supply source changes, as
water from difference sources varies.
We want to assure people that all the
drinking water we supply meets the
Australian Drinking Water Guidelines and
is safe and healthy to drink, he said.
We will continue to monitor our system

and water usage in the region, and adjust
the supply system as needed in future.

POOL SAFETY: KNOW YOUR OBLIGATIONS
Moorabool Shire Council is reminding property owners that every private swimming pool or
spa capable of containing a depth of water exceeding 300mm requires a building permit prior
to its installation.
The building permit will specify that a childproof safety fence and gate must be built and approved
before the swimming pool or spa can be used. The importance of adequate and compliant
fencing around home pools and spas cannot be underestimated.
Drowning is the most common cause of preventable death for children under 5 years of age in
Victoria. Pool fencing signicantly reduces the risk of drowning with research showing that the
risk of drowning in a fenced pool is about one quarter of that of drowning in an unfenced pool.
Our children need to be protected from such accidental drowning.
Safety Fence Tips
Maintain gates and fences regularly to ensure they comply with the Building Regulations.
Fit correct safety measures to gates, doors and windows.
Make sure no tree branches, pool pumps or pot plants etc are near the safety fence and be
sure that anything able to be climbed is not placed in a position where children could climb to
gain access to the pool or spa.
A safety fence is required if you have an inatable pool lled with water which is deeper than
300mm.
Position any chairs, boxes, pool pumps etc so that they cannot be used to climb the fence to
access the pool or spa.
Pool and Spa Regulations
It is law that swimming pools or spas on private residential properties in Victoria are provided
with safety fences to restrict access to the pool or spa.
Swimming pools that require safety fences: in-ground pools, above ground pools, hot tubs,
Jacuzzis and spas.
Any pool or spa fence, gate or door must be maintained in good working order.
All gates and doors providing access to a pool or spa must have self-closing and self-latching
devices and open away from the pool even pools and spas built before laws were introduced
in 1991 to make fencing compulsory.
It is an offence to prop open any gate or door providing access to a pool or spa.
A building permit must be obtained prior to the installation of all pools and spas with a depth
greater than 300mm and for the safety barrier.
FINES
The Building Act 1993 contains penalties for pool owners who install a pool
or spa and fail to carry out work in accordance with the Act.

PREPARING FOR THE 2016/2017 FIRE SEASON
With enormous grass growth following recent rains, Councils Municipal Fire Prevention Ofcer
has begun annual inspections for re hazards on properties in Moorabool.
Inspections will commence in high risk areas and then move to Bacchus Marsh and Ballan mid
to late December.
Council is receiving numerous requests of unsightly grass on blocks in town areas and is
requesting property owners start cleaning up these blocks as a priority.
Council and emergency service agencies work together throughout the year to ensure that the
community is educated on re prevention activities.
A year round maintenance program for your property is the best way to be prepared.

URBAN GREENWASTE SERVICE
Applications are now being taken for Councils new kerbside greenwaste collection to commence
in January 2017. Residents in Residential and Low Density Residential zoned areas are eligible

With approximately 15 to 20% of kerbside garbage being made up of organics, the service is part of
Moorabools strategy to reduce the amount of waste to landll. Further details about the service

Its easy to say where did

we go wrong, but we have
been going wrong for so
long; the wrong has become
an unbelievable right. The
sad thing is not the wrong or
the right, but the fact that we
have started to believe that
right and wrong are nothing
more than a political debates,
not a code to live by.
Two significant things
happened last week; Donald
Trump became the leader of
the free world and Leonard
Cohen was freed from his
disillusioned world; the well
that transformed his tears
to ink finally ran dry. The
lyricist of tormented realities
told through the G clef, the
worlds failures penned in a
passive but powerful protest.
The Canadian born Cohen
saw the world through a
prism of contempt, and told
the story through a cryptic
theological
metaphor.
Whilst few may have got
it, and less understood it,
Cohen absorbed it. The
raspy tones of Cohen echoed
through the complicity of
the stories told; a thinking
mans repose buried beneath
the commercial realities of
the music Industry.

The Star Spangled Clanger
Cohen had a perspective

within the perspective.
A unique freedom of
interpretation
to
be
personalised by the listener,
not the performer. Cohen
wasnt telling people how
to live, he wasnt directing
traffic; he rode above the
merry-go round, riding the
fake pony was not part of his
repertoire.
Trying to find the shallow
end of Cohens works will
see most of us treading
water. Complicated lives
are simplified by mortality,
yet complicated by our own
simplicity. We can follow
the bouncing ball through
our lives or simply live.
Cohen didnt see the world
as one thing or another; he
simply saw it for what it was.
By contrast the drawn out
monologues of hypocrisy
by our less than spiritual
leaders, neither inspire nor
pacify our discontent; we
are divided by mistruths
and confused by their
misgivings; we protest by
minority, yet condemn the
same; the real and the unreal
blended by confusion. We
are no longer led, simply
dragged into an ideology
devoid of ideas.
Our leaders no longer
travel the perilous path of
honesty; they drive on the
polished road of denial
where the signposts lead
to nowhere. If Trump is the
leader of the free world, we
are shackled by a clouded
reflection masquerading as
democracy. The mirror that
reflects reality is tainted
by the choices denied not
presented.
The star spangled banner
puts a price on democracy,
there is no balance sheet
on the credibility of the
candidates, indiscretions are
calculated over attributes in
a race to the bottom; half of
the people vote, and half of
that choose the direction,
the great unwashed dazed
and confused.
The Kennedy birth-right
lives and stalls through the
Clintons, as the Great White
Hope of anti-establishment
trashes the values of
humanity, tattered and torn.
Seeded by the contempt
of the self entitled, the
forgotten protest, without
relief, the devil surfs the
deep blue sea not separated
by the waves, and the ripples
send a message in a bottle to

the morally insolvent and
the ignorant.
The great unwashed are
pushing back. The silent
majority is linking arms
devoid of choice; the protest
is not about who leads, but
how they are being led.
Following Donald Trump
may not be walking in the
footprints of the fisherman,
but its walking away from
the establishment and the
stench of racism, misogyny,
and homophobia is being
tolerated to make the point,
and the fatal shores of the
colonies are picking up the
driftwood.
Our golden sands that
once welcomed diversity
are being sifted through
the naivety and ignorance
of Hansonism. Consider the
Senators theatrical display
in front of Parliament House
last week as One Nation
toasted Donald Trump, and
one can only assume the
Hansonites accept racism,
misogyny and homophobia
as part of the new world
order; where the One in
One Nation means at the
exclusion of others.
The people have spoken
Environmental Opinion
and its not about policy, its

a rejection of the scripted
political monologue; the
dance around democracy
may have performed its last
waltz. The peoples pursuit
of realism has rejected the
well-worn path of political
predictability. Its one thing
to be heard; its another to be
actually listened to.
Middle America and Middle
Australia may be different,
but not in the context of
political palatability. The
working poor that subsidise
the extremes are marching
on the establishment; this is
about seeking recognition
not retribution. Trump is to
Joe and Jane Average, what
Hanson is to world peace;
neither are the reflection,
just catalyst for protest.
The reflection of middle
Australia is the mirror
cracked, and no more
so than the rural sector.
The
establishment
has
ploughed over the regions,
hearing but not listening.
The
Chronicles
of
Canberra are being seen
as a fictional tale of parity,
a disingenuous dance in a
demonised democracy; they
sell the virtues of the bush,
mortgaged at the price of

integrity.
The political realities of selfpropagation have seeded,
and the great unwashed
are spraying the weeds of
contempt. The challenge is,
will the troglodytes seek
refuge in the hallowed halls,
or reach deep into the soils
of reality where the crop is
rarely, if ever shared by all.
The Trump and Hansons of
this world are only a threat
if not challenged by an
alternative.
There was two significant
things that happened last
week, the loss of Leonard
Cohen who penned a
portrait of the world through
the eyes of his soul, and the
rise of Donald Trump with
his blank canvas. Only time
will tell where the mourning
starts and ends; to whom
and what shall we mourn,
well that story is yet to be
written.
Donald Trump may well
say he is going to make
America great again, I
simply ask was it ever?

planet. The human species
can no longer make rules
as if we are the only beings
that matter. Maybe at long
last these writers are being
heard. Recently in Banco
Court in Brisbane there
was the Rights of Nature
Tribunal.

on the legitimacy or otherwise of human conduct
on the basis of whether or

life. Imagine if there were
an international tribunal
that concerned itself with
the fundamental rights of
all beings, including humans, and decided matters
on the basis of what was
best for the Earth community as a whole.
The Global Alliance for
the Rights of Nature is
described as a worldwide
movement seeking to create human communities
that respect and defend the
rights of nature. A founding member of this alliance
is the AELA or Australian
Earth Laws Alliance. Both
organisations have held
Rights of Nature (RON) tribunals, the most recent of
which took place in Banco
courtroom in Brisbanes
civil law precinct. At this
recent Brisbane Rights of
Nature Tribunal, after brief
opening remarks by the
forum chair Dr Michelle
Maloney, four sessions got
under way. The sessions

were:

Session 1: Mardoowara
/ Fitzroy River (Western
Australia) v Federal and
State Governments;
Session 2: Forests of Australia v Federal and State
Governments;
Session 3: Great Artesian
Basin v Federal and State
Governments and the Unconventional Gas Industry; and

Session 4: Great Barrier
Reef and Atmospheric
Commons v Federal and
State Governments and
Fossil Fuel Industries.
The format consisted of

opening statements by representatives of each natural
constituency. These were
followed by questions /
comments from the panel,
and expert testimony from a
variety of people with close
knowledge of each area.
Each case concluded with
a summing up phase dur-
ing which details of specific

actions, policies and recommended changes to laws
and regulations were put
forward.
Some of the key points that

emerged were

Instead of using the
broad-brush term environment which is arguably too static, we could
usefully refer to our lifesupport system.
Terms like Gaia, Mother
Earth, nature spirits
may be too amorphous
to have sufficient impact.
We could perhaps ascribe
to certain natural features the status of a living person. This would
help us to recognise the
living, systemic qualities
of, for example, the Great
Artesian Basin, the Great
Barrier Reef and what
remains of Australias
ancient forests. Theres
an ironic precedent here
in that companies were
provided with this very
status by a US court many

years ago, with disastrous
results.
In the Bunya Mountains
near Brisbane theres an
interpretive sign that explains how clearing the
forest replaces biotic volume with mere area. During the second session a
similar point was made
the older forests are far
richer in terms of species
requirements, services,
niches for life, carbon uptake, resistance to fire and
so on. Current embedded
policies, however, are to
progressively replace old
forests with new ones
that are essentially monocultures set out in rows
(for easier harvesting).
Theres thus a double loss
of volume and rich diversity that city dwellers are
unlikely to appreciate.
The overall lack of interest in such matters by the
Federal government is
demonstrated by the fact
that the Forestry Act currently in use dates back to

1959.
Toward the end of the
third session one of the
panel members identified
what is possibly the central
issue underlying much of
the detail. The point was
made that the multiple
failures of law and administration noted throughout
were not accidental. They
were and are direct consequences of a system thats
primarily evolved to serve
the rich and powerful. We
now know that the utilitarian principles that emerged
from our Western culture
and permeate its worldview are utterly unsuitable
for our present world.

Dear Editor,
I have lived in Ballan for

14 years, have made many
friends and have made Ballan my home since coming
here from NSW, to look after my elderly mother who
passed away six years ago.
l decided to stay and rented

a property and made it my
home for the past 12 years.
I spent over $25,000 of my
own money doing things
that had to be done on this
property, l have never asked
the landlord for anything. l
did this because this was my
home and to save the land-
lord money. On reflection

this was a mistake.
The house that l live in with

my partner and carer has
historical significance as it
was built in 1864.
The house was originally

named The Avenue and
is situated in the centre of
town. It is owned by an elderly property tycoon, who
has informed me that l have
two months to vacate as he
says he is going to bulldoze
the place and build shops;
not only my home, but the
shops next to this house.

Family sized homes continue to be highly popular

across the state as buyers look to secure larger
properties.
The latest REIV data shows
that three and four bedroom
homes have delivered solid
price increases in a range
of locations, in the three
months to 30 September.
Growth was greatest in
four bedroom houses, which
increased in value across regional Victoria to $435,000,
up from $430,000 in the most
recent quarter.
The top five locations for
increases in four-bedroom
houses were Broadford,
White Hills, Kilmore, Ballarat North and Trafalgar each delivering double-digit
growth over the quarter.
Broadford, to the north of
the city, increased more than
15 per cent on the previous quarter to a median of
$391,250. White Hills in Bendigo also experienced solid
growth of 12.3 per cent for
four-bedroom houses, to a
median price of $410,000.
Meanwhile three bedroom

homes continue to be popular with buyers across many
areas of Victoria.
Heyfield, Golden Point and
Ballarat Central all delivered solid price increase for
three-bedroom houses, with
Heyfield up more than 15
per cent in the September
quarter, to a median price
of $276,000. Golden Point
increased 12.4 per cent to a
median price of $295,000 and
Ballarat Central increased 9.1
per cent to a median price of
$335,500 for three-bedroom
houses.
Benalla was close behind
with a median increase of
almost seven per cent or
$15,000 to $233,750.
Further afield, the median
house price of three-bedroom properties in Horsham
grew by 5.3 per cent from
$226,000 to $238,000; Shepparton grew by 5 per cent
from $250,000 to $262,500;
and Bairnsdale grew by 4.6
per cent from $239,000 to
$250,000.
The September quarter also
showed good growth in
regional Victoria for units
and apartments, up 2.9 per
cent this quarter to a median
price of $269,000.
Two-bedroom units experienced solid increases in
Benalla and Wonthaggi, up
7.0 per cent and 5.0 per cent
respectively, while threebedroom units in Barwon
Heads rose 7.3 per cent to
$708,000.

rinks lost to give Avenue victory by nine shots over Learmonth. Ray Humphreys
rink led the way with an impressive 18 shot win, along
with Peter Kays rink (9 shots
up) which was able to cover
the other two rinks on the
day and secure the win.
Di Hardiments rink suffered a rare loss (3 shots
down), whilst Michael Roberts rink could not repeat
last weeks heroics, going
down by 15 shots.

Peter Glass rink held a
comfortable lead until the
afternoon tea break but inexplicably lost 14 shots in
four ends on the resumption
to surrender the lead. The
rink fought back in the latter
stages, but could not bridge
the gap and went down by

rink trailed by as many as 15
shots prior to the tea break
but rallied strongly in the
second half just going down
by four shots.

rink won 44-11 in an outstanding display, together

helping to spread cooch grass seed 40 metres around the centre wicket.

A record breaking round
for the Bulls with all six
Grades recording victories
on the same day.
The McIntyre boys defeated top of the ladder Sunbury
in a game dominated by the
bowlers.
With
Sunbury
batting
first the bowlers led, by M.
Eanayaka 4-36, I. Spiteri 3-20
and J. Bailey 3-13, dismissed
the opposition for 118.
After a shaky startin reply,
the Bulls passed the opposition score six wickets down
in blustery conditions and a
slow outfield. Their innings
came to a close, bowled out
for 157 and secured the important six points.
The best of the Bulls batting were P. Lalor 39 and M.
Sepala 35.
With a lead of 39 runs the
Bulls bowling attack went to
work where they left off in
the first innings. With bonus
points up for grabs the Bulls
claimed another 10 wickets
by the close of play bowling

The Bulls at stumps in reply
on Day One were 1-42.
Day 2 saw the Bulls off to
a solid start at 1-77 but after
losing some quick wickets
found themselves at the tail
end of their innings 9-175
with 10 runs to win and 1
wicket in hand.
The match winner on
the day was 16 year-old
Liam Taylor who batted 76
overs and 36 notout along
withTom Cotton who managed to get the Bulls over the
line for the win.

First XI v Ballarat-Redan
The Darley Lions easily accounted for their opposition
after compiling an impressive 8/264 in the first week
of their two-day contest.
The Lions found little resistance from the visitors bats
as they dismissed them for
just 118 to set up a top-ofthe-table clash with Mount
Clear, the competitions only
other undefeated side, next
weekend.
Much like their one-day
clash in Round 2 against
Golden Point, the Darley
bowlers put together some
solid bowling partnerships
and were miserly in letting the opposition hit the
scoreboard. Wickets fell at
regular intervals early in
the Ballarat-Redan innings,
with captain-coach Heath
Pritchard and Brad Barnes
teaming well with the new
ball, Matt Cape economical
as the first change bowler
and Sri Lankan spin twins
Hasitha
Wickramasinghe
and Sajith Rupasinghe continuing their fantastic starts
to the season with the ball.
Only one of Ballarat-Redans
top seven batsmen scored in
double figures, and despite
the Two Swords lower-order
providing some nuisance
value by hanging around at
the end of the innings, the
damage had already been
done and the Lions were
able to bowl out their opposition in 70.5 overs.
Wickets
were
shared
around once again, with
every bowler taking at least
one wicket Pritchard (2/19
off 13 overs), Barnes (2/21
off 12) and Wickramasinghe
(2/10 off 11 overs, with seven
maidens) were the multiple

wicket-takers, with Cape,
Rupasinghe, Dayle Lock and
Jake Wilkie all taking one
wicket each, with Zac Ticehurst taking three catches in
the field as well.
After starting well trying
to chase down 287 against
Brown Hill, Darleys 2nd
XI couldnt maintain that
momentum
throughout
the afternoon, falling 55
runs short as the Bulls dismissed them for 234. Allan
Steenholdt stood out with
a masterful innings of 72
runs before having to retire
hurt, Hamish Wheeler (49)
and Hayden Jamieson (27)
started things off well at the
top of the order, but Darleys
middle order all seemed to
get starts before getting out
just as they were starting to
look settled. Darleys Third
XI also had a tough day out
at the Hub against Mount
Clear, with the opposition
chasing down the Lions first
week score of just 142 with
only five wickets down. The
Lions looked a chance when
they took three Mounties
wickets with the score on 29
with Josh Calvitto having a
hand in all three, dismissing two batsmen off his own
bowling then taking a catch
off youngster Tyler Cox,
but then Mount Clear batsman Rhys Pickles took to
the young Lions, knocking
up 101 as Mount Clear finished their allotted overs on
5/198. Calvitto was the pick
of the bowlers with 3/56 off
his 16 overs, with Cox and
Josh Fitzgerald also taking
wickets.
Darleys Fourth XI put together a competitive performance against Lucas in their
one-day fixture, and whilst
the scorecard says they went
down by six wickets, it took

Lucas until their fourth-last
over to chase down Darleys
competitive total of 8/191,
led by a half-century from
Darren Hynes and some
good middle and late order
batting by Josh Randall (33),
James Higgins (23) and captain Jim Shea (22).
Juniors
Darleys 16 & Under cricketers are still searching for
their first win of the season
after tasting defeat at the
hands of Mount Clear in
their Round 4 Ballarat Cricket Association clash over the
past two Saturdays.
Mount Clear entered the
second day of play this past
Saturday already having
passed Darleys first innings
score of 9/52, but after starting the second day on 4/92,
Darleys bowlers will take
some positives from the day
after bowling the Mounties
out for 134. Miles Seager
was the best performed
bowler for the innings, returning figures of 3/25 off
his seven overs, with captain
Corey Beaton, Aiden Cox
and Regan King all claiming
two wickets each and Mitch
Ward returning figures of
1/8 off his eight overs to help
bowl out the Mounties.
The 14 & Under First XI
successfully defended their
first innings total of 158
against Golden Point, winning by four runs as the
game went down to the wire
before the young Lions held
their nerve to restrict Golden
Point to 8/154 in the last over
to record a memorable win.

Macbeth took two wickets
each for Darley, with Ben
Taylor, Will Johnston and
Jaylen Altay all taking single
wickets.
The Under 14 2nd XI continued their fantastic form

from the first week of their
game against Golden Point
Blue to bowl out the opposition for 94. The Lions then
re-commenced their innings
on 4/112, and advanced their
score to 8/250 by the end of
their second 25-over batting
