The aim of the subject is to introduce the students the design fundamentals, design
vocabulary and order of form and space.

Course content:

Introduction to the subject and its importance to the architecture

Primary elements: Point, line, plane, and volumetric elements.

Properties of form

(two dimensional) primary solids, variations in forms, Surface

articulation including importance of color theory, textures and relationship, Space defining
elements, organization of form and space. Circulation elements, balance, proportion and
scale, ordering principles and calligraphy
Design problems:

Design of floor patterns, wall textures, posters, banners, signage etc.

Design of small articles like: letter pad, visiting cards, book cover, logo, penholders,
lamps,

Design of meaningful composition and transformation using 2D & 3D objects


Minimum one time problem of 6 hours duration is to be conducted in class other than
regular design problems.

Design approach:

Application of above on two and three-dimensional compositions, Indoor and outdoor


sketching exercises to develop the skill and understanding of shades, shadows etc. in
the natural and man-made objects with the use of different models.

Study through models of different materials viz paper, clay wax, soap, wires etc.

The idea is to learn mass and space handling with importance of form, color and texture.

Note:

The Sessionals shall be in the form of hand made drawings, and models, the evaluation
will be through review system presented before the Faculty & Studio In charge.

The aim of the subject is to introduce the students about fundamentals of visualization
and preparation of architectural drawing.

Course content:

Hatching with various pencils and free hand sketching of natural and manmade objects
using pencil, pen, color, or other mediums/ techniques.

Graphic codes and symbols for various building elements and Architectural lettering

Scales: Construction of architectural scales and their application to real objects and
drawings

Introduction to the various types of 2D and 3D objects i.e. lines, plane and solid,
Graphical method for drawing such objects, division of lines, etc

Introduction to the types of projections and their use for architectural presentation and
designing.

Orthographic Projections: Basic fundamentals and its application for simple point, line,
simple regular solids and complex solids or hollow objects/geometric object

Note:

The Sessional shall be in the form of hand made drawings, and the evaluation will be

Aim:

The aim of the subject is to introduce the students about various types of building or
construction materials along with their manufacturing process and suitable use as
building components and related specifications.
Course content:
Properties, Types, Manufacturing, Quality and defects of following materials:
Clay and clay products like Bricks, Tiles and stones.
Cement, lime, sand, aggregate mortar and concrete blocks.
Timber, Glass and Ferrous & non ferrous metals
Especial functional need of building materials:
Abrasives, asbestos, asphalt bitumens, cork, electrical insulators fuels, gypsum, heat
insulation materials, lubricants, rubber sheets, roof coverings , solders. Sound absorbs
materials, tar, turpentine etc.
Finishing Material:
Paint, varnish, distempers wall paper, floor coverings tiles, vinyls , polyesters, fittings,
furnishing materials for interiors & exteriors, polymers , plastic resins etc. processed
materials- plywood, laminates, fiber boards, light weight boards panels etc. & clay
products
Prefabricated and pre-stressed building component:
Roof slab wall units, beams, columns, lintels, shelve etc of different types, their
specification & technique construction and use in architecture. Low cost construction
techniques and materials, combinations in mud, terracotta, bamboo construction etc.
termite protection, sewage protection, fire protection materials etc. of special need.
Industrial agriculture and mineral waste and their utilization as building materials:
Fly ash, blast furnace slag, calcium carbonate , lime kiln, rejects byproducts, gypsum, red
mud throwaway packages, rice husk, saw dust, wooden chips, choir waste wood wool,
tailings etc. their application in components of different types of buildings
Note:

The Sessional work should be include technical paper writing, market survey, case study
of building materials from various types of examples of rural, historic and contemporary
architecture style and their presentation in the form of seminar.
The work of CBRI, NBO, NIS, HUDCO, BMPTC & other related organization to be
constantly referred & discussed. There should be regular site visit to building constructed
or under construction. They should be recorded in the form of hand written reports.

The aim of the subject is to learn about formation of spaces, relationship among various
activity spaces and analysis of space requirements.

Course content:

Anthropometrics study and analysis, Aspects of area determination &area relationship,

Relationship between occupied and unoccupied spaces

Color theories and color schemes and its effect on the users

Difference between form and function based design approaches and their application

Development of aesthetic sense by use of appropriate form, color, texture, and material in
a building or objects

Introduction to draw presentation drawings i.e. plans, elevations, sections, views; and
rendering techniques

Design problems:
Design of various activity spaces (sleeping, cooking, living, dining, study area, toilet etc)
based on anthropometrics study and analysis

Design of building elements i.e. doors, windows, canopies, arches, etc.

Design of classrooms, labs, STD booth, kiosks, bus stop etc

Design of ceremonial gates, stage, landscape elements, street furniture, and other small
structures

Design of drinking water fountains, lamps, fireplace, steps, handrails, chair, table, bed and
storage unit.

Design approach:

Case studies for measured drawing of small buildings and objects. Study through
models of different materials viz paper, clay wax, soap, wires etc.

Minimum four-time problem of 6 hrs, duration is to be conducted in class other


than regular design problems.

There should be regular site visits to the building types dealt in the studio problem
for which audiovisuals should be prepared.

Note:

The sessional will be in the form of hand made drawings and models. The evaluation
should be done in intermediate reviews consisting of internal / expert system.

Course content:
Carpentry:

boards, handling different carpentry tools, carpentry process, carpentry joints and wood
working machines.
Sheet metal work:

Cutting, bending and jointing of

(ferrous / non ferrous metals) sheets, flats, bars,

wires etc. Exercises in simple welding of angles, pipes sheets, flats, etc
Masonry:

Handling the bricks, mixing the mortar, bond work of bricks, stones and masonry
tools.

Model making:

Models made of paper, thermocole, wires, plaster of Paris, cardboards, Acrylic sheets and
other soft materials based on the program of design.

Plumbing:

Introduction to various pipes and fittings screwed joints, threads bending and plumbers
tools.

Painting & polishing:

Preparation of timber and metal surfaces, priming, painting by brush, spray guns,
polishing of timber surfaces, lamination to timber surfaces

Photography:

Introduction to photography, use of camera, basic dark room technique in Architectural


techniques.

The aims of the course are to emphasis and evolve the methodology for architectural
design with reference to the previous knowledge of function and aesthetics.

Course content:

Design process and methodology; the design should highlight the clear approach to the
design with idea (concept), analysis, synthesis and architectural expression with use of
appropriate graphic presentation techniques.

Introduction of architectural designs with an approach of functional understanding and


analysis of problems with studies of space requirements and inter relationships

Understanding of simple load bearing support system and sustainability of built form

Understanding of provision of proper daylight and ventilation in buildings

Application of design principles i.e. rhythm, balance, scale, proportions etc

Design problems:

Design of small residence and other shelter with above parameters

Design of small shopping areas, canteen, kiosks etc

Design of dispensary, primary health clinic, small school etc

There should be minimum one time problem of 12 hrs. duration apart from min. two
regular design problems in the studio

Design approach:
The literature survey & data collection is necessary. There should be regular site visits to
buildings dealt in studio problems. Documentation should be done with the help of
photographs, slides, video etc

OBJECTIVES
All the four years of learning architectural design and allied subjects. Culminate in design thesis
project to motivate a student in investigative attitude individual methodology, thus to train in
handling projects independently.
PROJECT
Each student will select a subject of an architectural interest in consultation with the committee
appointed by the Head / Principal of the Dept. /Institution. The subject will have to be approved at
the beginning of the eighth semester. The evolution of the this is project will be continuous and
the student will have to give atleast three seminars/ submissions before the final submission. The
thesis project shall be submitted in the - form of bound report, drawings, models etc. in a manner
as stipulated in THESIS MANUAL on the date prescribed by the University.
Student at X semester have to prepare a detail thesis Project which should incorporate as much
as possible the elements of Research and Modern Techniques Tools of Science, Technology &
Engineering. The Project thus allotted to the students should be specific and clear goal oriented.
Theoretical / Study Research should be given preference.

a) Internal jury for the award of Sessional: Since Thesis Project A-511 is a comprehensive in

nature and completed at the time of final jury. The marks of Sessional awards are proposed as
follows:
i.

60 % award on internal! Assessment.

ii. 40% award on Final external jury.

The internal Jury will be of six stages of equal Marks it i.e. 10% of the overall Sessional Marks
allotted in the Scheme.
The internal assessments should be as follows:
Stage-1 First Review (Literature, Data Collection and Site Study)
Stage- II Second Review (Case Study Analysis & Inferences )
Stage- III Third Review (Finalization of Requirement and Conceptual Design)
Stage- IV Fourth Review (Revised Conceptual)
Stage- V Fifth Review (Pre-Final Drawing and Draft Report)
Stage-VI Internal Final Review (Submission of all Drawings, Draft Report and Model) The
Institute should prepare Thesis manual on the basis of their School thought and Local
Infrastructure condition and incorporate the above stages accordingly. Institute should preferably
adopt Practicing Architect/ Professional / Educationist at each stage of internal Jury.
b) The external Jury ( Final VIVA / VOCE) Will be conducted at the end of semester/ Completion
