CFC KIDS FOR CHRIST

Liturgical Cycle C
Senior Kids Monthly Topic

FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST

I. TOPIC: I will always do my best!

II. VIRTUE: Diligence and Excellence
III. OBJECTIVES:
- To help the kids realize that by doing their best, they are making their parents happy,
thus making God happy.
- To teach them that being excellent is what God wants us to do.
IV. SCRIPTURE READING:
Note to Speaker: Ask a few kids to read the Gospel aloud. Assign them a paragraph to read.
Vigilant & Faithful Servant
Luke 12: 32-48 (International Childrens Bible)

Dont Trust in Money

32
Dont fear, little flock. Your Father wants to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell the things you have and give to the poor.
Get for yourselves purses that dont wear out. Get the treasure in heaven that never runs out. Thieves cant steal it in
heaven, and moths cant destroy it. 34 Your heart will be where your treasure is.
Always Be Ready
35
Be ready! Be dressed for service and have your lamps shining. 36 Be like servants who are waiting for their master
to come home from a wedding party. The master comes and knocks. The servants immediately open the door for
him. 37 Those servants will be blessed when their master comes home, because he sees that his servants are ready
and waiting for him. I tell you the truth. The master will dress himself to serve and tell the servants to sit at the table.
Then the master will serve them. 38 Those servants might have to wait until midnight or later for their master. But
they will be happy when he comes in and finds them still waiting. 39 Remember this: If the owner of the house knew
what time a thief was coming, then the owner would not allow the thief to enter his house. 40 So you also must be
ready! The Son of Man will come at a time when you dont expect him!
Who Is the Trusted Servant?
41
Peter said, Lord, did you tell this story for us or for all people? 42 The Lord said, Who is the wise and trusted
servant? Who is the servant the master trusts to give the other servants their food at the right time? 43 When the
master comes and finds his servant doing the work he gave him, that servant will be very happy. 44 I tell you the
truth. The master will choose that servant to take care of everything the master owns. 45 But what will happen if the
servant is evil and thinks that his master will not come back soon? That servant will begin to beat the other servants,
men and women. He will eat and drink and get drunk. 46 Then the master will come when that servant is not ready. It
will be a time when the servant is not expecting him. Then the master will punish him and send him away to be with
the others who dont obey. 47 The servant who knows what his master wants but is not ready or does not do what
the master wants will be beaten with many blows!48 But the servant who does not know what his master wants and
does things that should be punished will be beaten with few blows. Everyone who has been given much will be
responsible for much. Much more will be expected from the one who has been given more.

Storyline:
(NOTE: The ROCK Facilitator can use this storyline to better explain the Gospel to the kids.)
Jesus usually talks to his followers about the kingdom of God using parables so that
they can easily understand his teaching.
What is a parable? It is a simple story used to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson, as
normally used by Jesus in the Gospels . In our Gospel today, Jesus told them about the
Parable of the Vigilant and Faithful Servants.
What is vigilant? Vigilant means being alert, always ready and attentive.
What is faithful? Faithful means being loyal and dependable.
In todays parable, Jesus told his listeners to be like servants who are always ready and
faithful while waiting for their master who went away on a journey. And if their master
sees them ready and faithful upon his return, their master will bless and reward them.
Like the master in the parable, God is very happy to bless us as well when we strive to
be vigilant and faithful followers to him.
Then, Jesus continued with the parable by saying that those servants that were
rewarded by the master will be very happy indeed because the master will entrust him
to take care of everything that he owns.
On the other hand, those evil servants who were doing bad things while the master
was away are going to be punished severely and sent away without a reward.
In short, Jesus is telling us that as He gives us good things and gifts that make us happy,
we need to be vigilant and faithful in always doing our best to take care of it. When we
do so, this will make Jesus very happy. And in making Jesus happy, we will also be
happy.

V. ACTIVITY: Completing my tasks

Materials:
-

Colored papers (1 set for each group)

Bond Papers (1 for each group) for Tasks 1 and 2
Bond Papers (1 for each kid) for Task 3
Pens/pencils (1 for each kid)
Glue/paste (1 for each group)
Scissors (1 for each group)

Procedures:
1. Start with a prayer.
2. Divide the kids into groups with 8-10 members and 1 ROCK Facilitator each and assign a
group number to each group.
3. Give each group a list of tasks that they need to do as a group. (See List of Tasks after
the Procedures.)
4. The speaker now tells the groups to start with Task 1.
5. After Task 1, the speaker will check their papers by counting the words that they have
formed from the words given (DILIGENT, FAITHFUL & VIGILANT). 1 word = 1 point.
6. Then they can proceed with Task 2.
7. After the given time, the speaker will now check their papers by choosing one group and
announcing to all what they have written. All the groups (including the chosen group)
must cross-out the words that have already been announced by the speaker. The
speaker will do this until he/she have checked the papers of all the groups. Counting the
words that were not crossed out will be the groups points for Task 2.
8. Instruct each group to count the points they have gathered from Task 1 and Task 2.
9. The speaker will now check and announce the group that got the highest point as the
winner.
10. Proceed then to Task 3.
11. Instruct the kids that they will give their artwork to their parents after the activity.

At the bottom of the paper, write down the assignment that they will commit to do at
home.
After the activity, give it to your parents as a surprise

VI. PEPTALK: (10mins)

I WILL ALWAYS DO MY BEST
When Jesus told His disciples about being vigilant and faithful, He simply wants them to
always do their best in serving God and other people. Why? Because He knows that by
doing so, it will also make us happy.
In the Gospel that we have just read, God blesses those people whom He will find doing
their best. It goes the same for us. He wants us to always do our best in all the things that
we do, especially the things that we are asked to do and, in the end, He will bless us.
For us KFC members, Jesus is asking us to do our best in making our parents happy. Can you
repeat after me? I will always do my best! Do you remember when was the last time you
gave your best or did your best to make your parents happy? What do you think are the
things that can make your parents happy? (Ask the kids for their answers.)
Our parents are already very happy to have us. But we can make them even happier if we
do something for them. What can we do for them? Just like in our activity, we can make
them happy by helping them with the household chores or by studying well or by giving
them simple, surprise gifts. And to make them happy today, let us give them our artwork
while giving them our hugs and a kisses as well.
God blessing us means He will give more good things to us that will make us happy. (Like a
hug, a kiss, or a gift from our parents for having good grades or because we helped them
with the household chores.)
By always doing all of these things, not just to our parents, but also to other people like our
relatives and friends, Jesus will someday bring us to Heaven where we will experience
unending happiness.
Lastly, never forget to pray before we do anything, while we are doing it and after we have
done it. And if ever we find ourselves having a hard time doing our task, always ask for
Gods strength and grace for us to be able to do our best. Can we say it again? I WILL DO
MY BEST!

VII. SONG: Yes we Can

VIII. PARENTS FORUM:

a. The Kids topic for this month is about Diligence and Excellence. They are taught that
Jesus blesses the kids who are trying their best to be diligent and excellent in
everything that they do.
b. Parents are encouraged to make a list of the things that the kids can do at home. The
parents are to observe and help their children as they strive to be diligent and excellent
in the things that they are asked to do.
c. At the end of each day, lead your kids into prayer and allow them to pray to God and
say their thanksgiving for giving them the strength to do their tasks diligently or to ask
for Gods strength to keep on doing things excellently with love.

IX. FEATURED SAINT:

Feast Day: August 4
Born: 1768
Died: 1859
John Mary Vianney was born in Lyons, in France. As a child he took care of his father's
sheep. He loved to pray but he also loved to play horseshoes. When John was eighteen, he
asked his father if he could become a priest. His father was worried because John had
become a big help on the family farm but two years later his father agreed.
When he was twenty years old, John studied
under Father Balley. The priest was very patient
but John became sad when he found it difficult
to learn Latin. He then decided to walk sixty
miles, which was a very long walk, to the shrine
of St. John Francis Regis whose feast we
celebrate on June 16. John prayed to St. John
Francis for help. After the pilgrimage, he still
found his lessons difficult but now he was not
sad. He just decided to study harder.
John was finally able to enter the seminary to
become a priest. No matter how much he tried,
he found his studies quite hard. In the final
exams, which were spoken, not written, John
had to face a group of teachers and answer
their questions. He was very worried and could
not complete the test.
Yet, because John was a holy man, he was full of common sense and understood what the
Church taught about the subjects. He knew the right answers when asked what should be
done in this case or that. He just couldn't say those answers in the difficult way they were

taught in the Latin text books. John was ordained and became a priest anyway. He
understood what his job was as a priest and everyone knew he was a good man.
After he became a priest, he was sent to a little parish called Ars. Father Vianney fasted,
prayed and did hard penance so that God would save the people of his parish from sin. The
people of his parish were not all good. They drank too much liquor, used bad language,
worked even on Sundays and never went to Church.
Then God heard Fr. Vianney's prayer and one by one the liquor shops closed down. People
slowly started going to Church for Mass and began worshipping God.
God gave John the power to see into people's minds and to know the future. Because of this
gift, he converted many sinners and helped people make the right choices in life.
Hundreds of pilgrims began to come to Ars and St. John Vianney spent twelve to sixteen
hours everyday hearing confessions. He really wanted to spend the rest of his life in a
monastery as a monk; instead, he stayed forty-two years at Ars and died there in 1859 at
the age of seventy-three.
