Course Contents:
1. Rigid and deformable solids; (Ch. 1, BJ1)
2. Forces acting on rigid bodies; (Ch. 2, BJ1)
3. Free body diagrams: Resultants of forces and momentum; (Ch. 3, 4 BJ1)
4. Method of joints and method of sections for evaluating internal forces in bodies ; (Ch. 6,
BJ1)
5. Concept of strain - normal and shear strains, State of strain; Hookes law, Constitutive
relations, Axially loaded members, force and deflections, Indeterminate systems and
compatibility conditions, Simple indeterminate systems and lack of fit problems,
Generalized Hookes law; (Ch. 1, 2 BJ2)
6. Torsion of circular shafts - determinate and simple indeterminate systems. (Ch. 3, BJ2)
7. Shear force and bending moment diagrams (Ch. 4 , 5 BJ2)
8. Bending and shearing stresses in beams of symmetrical cross-section; Concept of shear flow
and shear centre (Ch. 6, BJ2)
9. Transformation of plane stress and strain, Principal stresses and strains, Mohrs circle,
Bending deflection of beams by direct integration method, Stress in cylindrical and spherical
shells, Thin-Walled Pressure Vessels (Ch 7, BJ2)
10. Elastic theory of bending of beams, principle of superposition and its limitations,
Application of direct integration method to simple indeterminate systems (Ch 9, BJ2)
11. Elastic buckling of compression members. (Ch 10, BJ2)

Mini quizzes will be unannounced (4 + 4, regular class hours, 15-20 mins.)
DX grade will not be implemented
Attendance will be biometric

Grading
1. Mini quizzes (5 best out of 8): 10
2. Grand quizzes (3 best out of 4): 15
3. Mid - Sem Exam: 20
4. Class Participation: 5
5. End - Sem Exam: 50
Note:
1. For the mid sem exams and final exams the scores will be rounded up to next integer.
2. The final score will be rounded up to next integer
