INTRODUCTION
Sunnah health and fitness is about a way of life, a means of how to conduct oneself, protect oneself, and
gaining the realisation of the importance of health itself. This all entails true belief, fear and reliance in
Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala', and Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' alone.
To gain the knowledge and help, the provisions, blessings and rewards of ones health and sickness is to
have all the aspects of this belief, fear and reliance in Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala'. Then we can find the cures,
the remedies, the preventions and protection of sickness, which is the precursor to health.
Aspects of the Sunnah have been forgotten or overlooked by the modern intervention of technology,
science and medicines provided by the multinational corporate organisations.
Also to, has religion lost its gusto, its importance in this westernisation of modern culture to reach for the
quick easy options, which quite honestly cause more harm than good.
We must maintain the Sunnah
We must revive the arts of Sunnah
We must keep alive Islam and its full benefits
Allah is all Merciful.
The Maintenance of our bodies includes our mind and soul, for we need to keep equilibrium, a balance, to
achieve harmony between these three aspects of our being.
In sickness and in health, exposes us, reminds us, governs us, by the will of Allah-Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' to
realise His existence, and His Control over us.
cleanliness by frequent ablutions and baths with water, frequent daily cleaning of teeth, physical exercise,
are all most beneficial to the maintenance of individual and public health.
The teachings of the Prophet Muhammad-sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam- radically changed the mode of life,
beliefs and customs of the pre-Islamic Arabs. The Muslim became a shining pearl in the jahiliyya
community, as lie was chaste and clean inside and outside. Islam inspired Muslims to search for knowledge
and wisdom. The Prophet-sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam- said: Search for knowledge and wisdom even as far
as in China, as China was the farthest country known to Arabs.
Once Islam became established as a civilization and empire, the medical sciences and wisdom of different
nations were translated into Arabic and then incorporated in the traditional medicine.
Greek medicine, most notably the works of Hippocrates and Galen, received great attention. They were
translated mainly during the rule of the Abbasid Caliph al-Mamun (late 8th and early 9th century). The
four humours were at that time accepted as the basis of medical theory. Both theory and practice
flourished and were developed enormously not least in the area of the design and administration of
hospitals - by some of the greatest figures In medical history, such as al-Razi (in the West known as Rhazes,
d.925), Ibn Sina (Avicenna, d. 1037), at-Zahrawi (Abuleasis, d. 1013), Ibn al-Nafis (d.1288), Ali ibn al-Abbas
al-Majusi (Haly Abbas, d.994) among many others. Within the same inclusive Islamic civilization, there
were also many non-Muslims who achieved eminence for their encyclopaedic learning and skill as
physicians, the best known being the Jewish philosopher, Musa ibn Maimun (Maimonides), the Christians
Bakhtishisha who worked for the Caliph Harun al-Rashid, and Hunayn ibn Ishaq who worked for Caliph alMutawakkil and had been the chief translator of Galen, Hippocrates, Plato and others.
The Muslim and non-Muslim physicians, pharmacists, surgeons, ophthalmologists etc. wrote huge works in
Arabic and added their wisdom, knowledge gained by experience and experimental procedures, to the
previous knowledge gained from the ancient Greeks and other peoples.
Although some of the original works are no longer extant, a huge amount of this Islamic medical
knowledge contained in books and manuscripts is still accessible in many libraries and museums. Also,
many of the original works were translated into Latin and thence into European vernaculars and provided
the basis of modern medicine after the intellectual renaissance of Europe: the Latin texts of Arabic
originals can still be read.
The Islamic world suffered from internal feuds and wars resulting in its weakness and gradual
disintegration. The Mongols and Tartars (under Genghis Khan and Hulagu) dealt crushing blows to Islamic
civilization in the eastern part of the empire from Samarkand to Baghdad and beyond towards Egypt. In the
western domains of Islam, Christian Spaniards not only rebelled against Muslim overlords, they set about
systematically removing Muslims and their civilization front the Iberian peninsula despite eight centuries of
mutual tolerance between Muslims, Jews and Christians under Islamic rule: Granada fell in 1492.
The Islamic world became intellectually stale and very little innovative scientific work was produced. Even
the great medical works such as those of lbn Sina, al-Zahrawi, lbn al-Nafis etc. were not kept alive except in
isolated centres. Exceptionally, in the Indian subcontinent lbn Sinas al-Qanun (Canon) continued to be the
standard text for physicians with additions front ancient Hindu medicine. This style of healing is still active
in India and Pakistan and known as Unani medicine, its practitioners being known as hakims rather than
doctors.
In the Arabic-speaking world, by contrast, only a few people could read and understand al-Qanun or other
great works, the later physicians depended on the Tazkarat Dawud of Dawud al-Antaki, a work quite
inferior to the writings of Ibn Sina or al-Mansuri or al-Razi. With further passage of time, many of the
traditional healers and physicians were unable to read and understand even Tazkarat Dawud. Many
reverted back to animalistic practices including the prescription of amulets, charms and talismans which
are all prohibited in Islam.
The growing interest over the last two decades in herbal medicine has made it a profitable subject area for
publishers. Some of them have begun to publish abridged versions of the works of Ibn Sina. Indeed, there
are almost weekly additions to the popular literature on herbal medicine, most of it containing nothing
new. However, there are a few physicians (mostly Western-educated) both in Arab countries and
elsewhere who have published the results of modern researches in pharmacology and biochemistry. The
work of Dr Hassan Shamsi Pasha in this field is a good example. Also, many centres have sprung up in the
Arab world for the study of traditional and Islamic medicine which organise conferences and symposia to
encourage and enable new research in this field.
Conclusion
A lot of work has been going on to revive both traditional herbal medicine and Prophetic medicine in many
Arab and Islamic countries. There is, however, a great need to improve on traditional medicine and
integrate it with the national medical system. The majority of physicians and pharmacists, trained in
Western medicine, lack even rudimentary knowledge of traditional medicine and are therefore hostile
towards it. This negative attitude will not disappear unless the medical curricula in universities include
training in traditional and Prophetic medicine. Equally, there is a need to educate herbalists and
practitioners of traditional medicine to improve their standards of understanding and their techniques in
preparing and prescribing traditional remedies.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The scholars of Islamic culture worked extensively in the combined fields of botany, herbals and healing.
Several scholars contributed to the knowledge of plants, their diseases and the methods of growth. They
classified plants into those that grow from cuttings, those that grow from seed and those that grow
spontaneously. Great Muslim figures such as Al-Dinawari, Ibn Juljul and Ibn al-Baytar made great progress
in the field, as this article demonstrates. Muslim botanists knew how to produce new fruits by grafting;
they combined the rose bush and the almond tree to generate rare and lovely flowers. The royal botanical
gardens contained an endless variety of plants, indigenous and exotic, cultivated for their brilliant foliage,
their delightful fragrance, or their culinary and medicinal virtues. In particular, they dealt with plants in a
variety of ways, which included their study from a philological perspective, but most importantly for their
curative and healing properties.
The Qur'an provided the initial impetus for the investigation of herbs by Islamic writers, for plants are
named in the depiction of Paradise and are used as signs of the Creator's power and majesty
Inspired by their faith, Muslims worked extensively in this area. Several scholars contributed to the
knowledge of plants, their diseases and the methods of growth. They classified plants into those that grow
from cuttings, those that grow from seed and those that grow spontaneously
SICKNESS
Reported Ibn Quayyim al- Jawziyyah, sickness is considered a blessing, test, rectification. All sicknesses
are blessings from Allah (swt) because He loves you. It is given to a person as a test, just as all affliction
and hardships are. It is a means to expiate sins.
Allah-,Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' , says:
And when I am sick, then He restores me to health
Imam Ali-Alaihi salam- has said:
More calamitous than poverty is the sickness of the body
One of the treasures of Paradise, which reaches a Mu'min in this world, is sickness. If a Muslim occasionally
and unintentionally, falters and commits sins, Allah does not like him to return to Him carrying the burden
of his sins; He thus afflicts him with illness in order that his sins are forgiven.
A person who suffers from illness, beseeches and supplicates to Allah-Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' to restore his
good health and Allah likes this state of a sick person, for He desires His servant to converse and
communicate with Him. At times, Allah-Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' afflicts a person with sickness in order to
elevate him in spiritual rank and status. The best amongst those who are ill is one who exercises patience
in this suffering, conceals his pain and desists from complaining about his disease to others until he regains
his health and acquires the maximum reward ordained for him.
PATIENCE IN SICKNESS
Abu Muhammad Riqqi says: Once, I arrived in the presence of Imam Ridha -Alaihi salam- and greeted him.
He replied to my greetings, inquired after my health and began to converse with me. In the course of the
conversation, all of a sudden he said, O Abu Muhammad! Every Mu'min, whom God afflicts with a
misfortune and who exhibits patience over it, shall surely come to possess the rank and recompense of a
martyr in the eyes of God. I wondered, In what connection did the Imam-Alaihi salam- speak this? We
had not been talking about misfortunes and calamities for the ImamAlaihi salam - to have suddenly come
up with this kind of speech? I bid farewell to the Imam- Alaihi salam-and proceeded towards my friends
and fellow travellers, when suddenly I experienced a pain in my leg. I passed the night in great pain and
when morning dawned, I noticed that my legs had become inflamed. After a period, this inflammation
became more severe. I remembered the speech of Imam Ridha- Alaihi salam-in which he had
recommended patience in the face of misfortune and how I had thought it to be out of place then. In this
state I reached Madinah, but there, a large wound developed in my leg, oozing pus. The pain was so
excruciating that I could not be at peace. I then realized that the Imam-Alaihi salam- had visualized such a
phenomenon when he had spoken to me and advised me to keep calm by means of patience. For ten
months, I was bed-ridden as a result of this sickness. The narrator says: After a period, Abu Muhammad
regained his health only to fall ill once again, eventually passing away in that sickness.
but also to alleviate it. This is out of our deep sense of service to humanity at large. The sick, neurotic and
deranged persons deserve our highest sympathies. Naturally, it becomes the foremost duty of a Muslim to
look after them, and to care and nurse them with due kindness and compassion.
Ones superior stance and happy position should at no moment make him too good and too wise, out of
his sense of false pride, to become indifferent and discourteous to the sick and infirm, nor should he run
away with the notion that he will never fall sick, or that he will never be in such a predicament that he
would need others help at any moment in his life.
To show compassion to the sick and to nurse them is an act of piety that pleases Allah-Sub'hanu wa ta'ala'
and His Messenger-sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam. It also creates salubrious effect among individuals in
society. It develops cordial relations among them and strengthens their bonds of friendship and human
brotherhood. And this mutual cooperation and amity acts as a cementing force to fortify the arch pillar of
the structure of Islamic society, thereby bringing stability to the community and the nation at large.
All stemming from the cellular level within the body, caused by acid
build up
There are two types of diseases that attack the heart, one doubt and error, and the second lust and desire,
both are mentioned in the Quran, Allah-Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' Says about the disease of doubt:
In their hearts is a disease (of doubt and hypocrisy) and Allah Has Increased their disease. (2:10)
And that those in whose hearts is a disease (of hypocrisy) and the disbelievers may say: What Allah
Intends by this (curious) example (74:31)
This is the disease of doubt and error. In addition, Allah-Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' says about desire and lust,
adultery in this case:
O wives of the Prophet! You are not like any other women. If you keep your duty (to Allah), then be
not soft in speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease (of hypocrisy, or evil desire for adultery) should be
moved with desire... (33:32)
Physical diseases that attack the body
"There is no restriction on the blind, nor any restriction on the lame, nor any restriction on the sick.
(48:17)
These verses refer to ailments that might attack a person while performing the Hajj, while fasting or
making ablution. They contain a tremendous secret and wisdom, indicating the greatness and divine
wisdom of the Quran and its sufficiency for those who have sound understanding and comprehension.
The science of medicine consists of three basic rules preserving good health, avoiding what might cause
harm (i.e. establishing immunity) and ridding the body of harmful substances. Allah has mentioned these
three basic principles in connection with the performance of Hajj, Fasting and ablution mentioned above,
And whosoever of you is ill or has an ailment in his scalp (necessitating shaving), he must pay a Fidyah
(ransom) of either observing Sawm (fasts) (three days) or giving Sadaqah (charity - feeding six poor
persons) or offering sacrifice (one sheep). (2:196)
Allah-Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' Has allowed the sick and those suffering from lice or sensitive scalp, to shave
their head, which is normally prohibited while wearing Ihram. Shaving the head and exposing the scalp in
these cases removes the harmful substances and thus allows the sick person to get rid of whatever caused
his illness and to recover from the condition that was aggravated because of the hair. This is an example of
ridding the body of harmful substances, which had a higher priority (thus the exemption) than the general
rule, no shaving of the head while in the state of Ihram. There are ten things that might cause harm to the
body when congested, unless the body eliminates them;
Abu Harairah Radiallahu ta'ala 'anhu-that the Prophet -sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam- said There is no
FINDING
CURES
disease that Allah has sent down,
except THE
that He
also has sent down its treatment.
On the authority of Ibn Zubair -Radi Allaho Anhu-, on behalf of Jabir Bin Abdullah, -radi Allaho t ala Anhuthat Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said :Every illness has a cure, and when the proper
cure is applied to the disease, it heals by Allah's Will.
In addition, it is narrated in Bukhari & Muslim that the Messenger of Allah said :Allah has not sent down a
disease except that He Has also sent down its cure.
So the cures are all around us and in the actions we perform,. We need to do good deeds, to combat the
dis-belief and bring about Tawheed, and rid the bad deeds.
GOOD DEEDS
Salat, duas, Zikr, Sadaqah, Quran recitation, Tasbeeh, Fasting/ Saum,
Islam is referred to as the religion of cleanliness. Truly, God loves those who turn unto Him in
repentance and loves those who purify themselves. (Quran 2:222) In the traditions of Prophet
Muhammad -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- cleanliness is mentioned as half of faith, therefore, it is
important to keep the body fresh and clean and Islam insists on several practices to facilitate this. The
private parts are washed after using the toilet and Muslims must pay particular attention to being clean
before praying. They wash their hands, faces, (including rinsing the mouth and nose) arms and feet, a
minimum of five times per day. Prophet Muhammad-sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- insisted that the
believers wash their hands, before praying, before and after eating and upon waking up in the morning.
Infection control in Islam includes isolation and quarantine. Prophet Muhammad, -sallAllaahu alayhi wa
sallam- instituted strategies that are today implemented by public health authorities. He commanded his
followers not to travel to places known to be afflicted with illness and he advised those in the
contaminated areas or communities not to leave and spread the disease further afield. He said, If you
hear that there is a plague in a land, do not enter it; and if it (plague) visits a land while you are therein,
do not go out of it. He also counselled ill people not to visit healthy people.
SUNNATS OF CLEANLINESS
The Messenger of Allah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- would always keep his body and clothing clean, he
would bathe on a regular basis and instruct the companions to stay clean too. The Messenger of Allah sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- would clean his blessed nose with his blessed left hand and wash it with water
and with the left hand he would carry his blessed slippers/shoes too. If anything unclean was on the
clothing, it was also washed with the left hand and the rest of the activities were done with the right hand.
When giving something or taking something he would use his right hand.
The Muslim, whom Islam wants to stand out amongst people, is very clean. He has high standards of
personal hygiene, bathes frequently in accordance with the Sunnah and wearing 'Itr-fragrance (for men
only).
The true Muslim keeps his clothes and socks clean, checking them from time to time, to be sure that they
have no unpleasant smell. One also wears perfume to help keep clean. Also taking care of the mouth, for
no one should ever have to smell an unpleasant odour coming from it. One does this by cleaning the teeth
every day with preferably a Miswak or toothbrush and toothpaste.
Regrettably, some Muslims neglect these teachings that are at the heart of Islam, and do not pay heed to
the cleanliness of their mouths, bodies and clothes. So you may see them going to the mosque or to other
religious meetings and study circles, annoying their brothers with their unpleasant smell and offending the
angles who surround these blessed gatherings.
DIRTY CLOTHING
Jabir-Radiallahu ta'ala 'anhu- states that, 'The Messenger of Allah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- came to
visit us, and saw a man who was wearing dirty clothes. He said, 'could this person not find anything with
which to wash his clothes'''
The Messenger of Allah-sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- did not like a Muslim to appear before people
wearing dirty clothes, if he had the means to clean them. He encouraged Muslims always to dress in clean
clothes and to present a neat and attractive appearance
CLEANLINESS
CLEANLINESS IS HALF OF IMAN
The Messenger of Allah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said that, 'Purification is half of faith.'
'Aisha radiallahu ta ala mauha- narrates the Messenger of Allah-sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- saying that,
'The religion is based on cleanliness.'
DUTY OF A MUSLIM
Abu Hurairah,-Radiallahu ta'ala 'anhu-, narrates from the Messenger of Allah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallamsaid that, 'It is the duty of every Muslim to take a bath (at least) once every seven days, and to wash his
head and body.'
How urgent is the Muslims' need to follow the guidance of this great Messenge in his command to take
care of one's hair and keep it neat in accordance with the teachings of Islam. Looking after one's hair,
according to Islamic teaching, involves keeping it clean, combing it, perfuming it and styling it nicely.
MISWAK
"He who holds on firmly to my Sunnah at a time when my Ummah are (grovelling) in corruption will
receive a reward of a hundred martyrs."
And, indeed the MISWAAK IS A GREAT SUNNAH.
WHAT IS MISWAK
A miswak, or siwak, is a softened small stick with which the teeth are rubbed and cleaned. The end is
shaped into a brush through biting or chewing, which serve to separate the fibres and release the healing
herbal powers of the twig. Some advantages of the miswak are that is does not require toothpaste, water
or a special area to use it, and may be easily carried in one's purse or pocket. It is also disposable and
biodegradable - therefore, it is the ultimate environmentally safe toothbrush. Some people even believe it
works better than a toothbrush. Nevertheless, a more compelling reason to use the miswak is that it is
Sunnah to do so.
Abu Hurairah -Radiallahu ta'ala 'anhu- reported that Prophet Mohammad -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallamsaid, "Were it not that I might overburden believers, I would have ordered them to use the miswak at
every prayer" (Imam Muslim, Vol. 1).
Abu Hurairah -Radiallahu ta'ala 'anhu- reported: The Messenger of Allah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallamsaid, "Had I not thought it difficult for my Ummah, I would have commanded them to use the Miswak
(tooth-stick) before every Salat.''[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
We learn from this Hadith that the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- liked to clean his teeth with
Miswak with every Salat, but he did not made it obligatory for the reason that it would be inconvenient for
his followers. It shows that he was extremely affectionate and kind to his Ummah. According to
researchers it is this regular cleaning of the teeth, along with a proper diet, that makes the difference
between healthy and unhealthy teeth. Keeping your teeth clean is as important islamically as it is
medically. It is as difficult to envision speaking to Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala (through prayer) with bad
breath and dirty teeth as it is to envision speaking to a friend when you are suffering from bad breath and
dirty teeth. The Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- h imself , used to use the miswak before every
prayer (Sahih Muslim, Vol.1). Modern science suggests we would do well to follow his example.
THE USAGE OF MISWAK: WAY OF CLEANING THE MOUTH & PLEASING TO ALLAH
The medical benefit with Miswak has been extensively recorded. A number of research have indicated that
Miswak, when used properly, is a superb anti-microbial toothbrush for dental hygiene and gum infection
cure, minimizing plaque and gingivitis, teeth whitening and relieving smelly breath, whilst giving you a nice
mouth odour. It has established that the Miswak has effective ingredients which aren't generally present in
toothpastes with anticariogenic and anti-inflammatory hypoglycaemic functions. The usage of Miswak is a
way of cleaning the mouth and is pleasing to Allah . Sub'hanu wa ta'ala .
The Miswak is a stick through which a person cleans the mouth. A great Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah
(May Allah bless him and grant him peace). Moreover it is a Sunnah of all the Messengers of Allah
radiallahu ta ala hanhumma, for they used the Miswak. Abu Ayyub Ansari -Radiallahu ta'ala 'anhunarrates that four things are the Sunnahs of all the prophets radiallahu ta ala hanhumma.
Circumcision
To use fragrance
To use Miswak
Marriage
Aisha radiallahu ta ala mauha, has reported that: The prayer before which the Miswak is utilized is 70
times more superior to that before which it is not used.
Abu Darda-Radiallahu ta'ala 'anhu- states that: Make Miswak a must do not be headless as there are
twenty four benefits in Miswak, the greatest benefit is that Allah (swt), becomes pleased, there is
increase in wealth, it freshens the breath, it strengthens the gums, it relieves headaches, it relieves
toothache and due to the light from the face and teeth the angles shake hands.
The wisdom underlying the usage of the Miswak after rising from sleep is that during sleep bad vapours
rise from the stomach towards the mouth. This leads to bad smell in the mouth in addition to a change in
the sense of taste. Using the Miswak removes unhealthy smell and rectifies the change which occurred in
the taste.

TAWHEED
Firstly ; Finding Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala', The One God, who guides, provides, sustains, protects, and tells
us, to have faith and complete trust in Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala', to fear only Him, and to ask for help from
Him, and to be completely reliant on Him, Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala'. Namely, Tawheed, having the Mindset/ Belief.
Ar-Rida: " this is when a servant surrenders his affairs to Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala', loving Allah Sub'hanu
wa ta'ala' and expecting Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' 's reward." Such a person will then experience
tranquillity and joy, love of Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' and reliance upon AllahSub'hanu wa ta'ala'
" There is no compulsion in religion. Verily, the right path has become distinct from the wrong path.
Whoever disbelieves in Taghut (false deity) and believe in Allah then he has grasped the most
trustworthy hand hold that will never break, and Allah is all hearer , all knower. Allah is the Wali
(protector or guardian) of those who believe. He brings them out from the darkness into light. But as for
those who disbelieve, their Ailiya (supporters and helpers) are Taghut, they bring them out from the light
into darkness. Those are the dwellers of the fire, and they will abide therein FOREVER!" ( 2:256-257)
WHAT IS TAWHEED
Tawheed in Arabic means attributing Oneness to Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' and describing Him as being
One and Unique, with no partner or peer in His Essence and Attributes. The Arabs say waahid, ahad and
waheed, all meaning one. Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' is Waahid, meaning that He has no rivals or peers in
any way. So Tawheed means knowing Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' is One, with none like unto Him. Whoever
does not acknowledge Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' in these terms and does not describe Him as being One
with no partner or associate does not believe in Tawheed. With regard to the shari definition of Tawheed,
it means believing in Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' alone as God and Lord and attributing to Him alone all the
attributes of Lordship and divinity. It may be defined as follows: Believing that Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' is
One with no partner or associate in His Lordship (ruboobiyyah), divinity (uloohiyyah) or names and
attributes (al-asma wal-sifaat).
This word (Tawheed) and its derivatives are used with this meaning in the Quraan and Sunnah. For
example: Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' says: Say (O Muhammad): He is Allah, (the) One [Ahad]. Allah-usSamad [Allah the Self-Sufficient Master, Whom all creatures need]. He begets not, nor was He
begotten. And there is none co-equal or comparable unto Him [al-Ikhlaas 112:1-3]And your Ilaah (God)
is One Ilaah [ilaahun waahidun] (God Allah), Laa Ilaaha illa Huwa (there is none who has the right to be
worshipped but He), the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful [al-Baqarah 2:163] Surely, disbelievers are
those who said: Allah is the third of the three (in a Trinity). But there is no Ilaah (god) (none who has
the right to be worshipped) but One Ilaah [ilaahun waahidun](God Allah). And if they cease not from
what they say, verily, a painful torment will befall on the disbelievers among them [al-Maa'idah 5:73]
And there are many similar verses. In Saheeh al-Bukhaari (7372) and Saheeh Muslim (19) it is narrated that
Ibn Abbaas-Radiallahu ta'ala- said: When the Prophet- sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam-sent Muaadh ibn Jabal
to Yemen, he said to him: You are going to people from among the People of the Book, so let the first
thing to which you call them be belief in Allah alone (Tawheed). If they accept that, then tell them that
Allaah has enjoined on them five prayers every day and night. If they pray then tell them that Allah has
enjoined on them zakaah from their wealth to be taken from their rich and given to their poor. If they
agree to that then take it from them but avoid the best of peoples wealth.
In Saheeh Muslim it is narrated from Ibn Umar - Radiallahu ta'ala that the Prophet- sallallahu 'alaihi wa
sallam- said: Islam is built on five (pillars): belief that Allah is One, establishing regular prayer, paying
zakaah, fasting Ramadaan and Hajj.
What is meant by Tawheed in all these texts is affirming the meaning of the testimony that there is no god
but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, which is the essence of the religion of Islam with
which Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' sent His Prophet Muhammad- sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam-, based on the
evidence of the words of the Quraan and Sunnah. In some versions of the hadith of Muaadh quoted
above it says: You will come to some people from among the People of the Book so when you come to
them, call them to bear witness that there is no god except Allaah and that Muhammad is the
Messenger of Allaah. Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1492.
According to another version of the hadith of Ibn Umar Radiallahu ta'ala -: The Messenger of Allahsallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam. said: Islam is based on five (pillars): the testimony that there is no god except
Allaah and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger... Narrated by Muslim.
This indicates that Tawheed is the essence of the testimony that there is no god except Allah Sub'hanu wa
ta'ala' and that Muhammad -sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam - is the Messenger of Allah, and that this is Islam
with which Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' sent His Prophet to the two races of mankind and the jinn, other than
which Allah will not accept any religion from anyone.
Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' says: Truly, the religion with Allah is Islam [Al Imraan 3:19]
And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he
will be one of the losers [Al Imraan 3:85]
Once this is understood, it should be noted that the scholars have divided Tawheed into three categories,
as follows: Tawheed al-Ruboobiyyah (Oneness of Divine Lordship), Tawheed al-Uloohiyyah (Oneness of
Divinity) and Tawheed al-Asma wal-Sifaat (Oneness of the Divine Names and Attributes).
TAQWAH
Taqwa can be compared to walking through a narrow path with thorny bushes on both sides and a person
passing through it tries his level best to save his clothes from being torn. The thorns are the sins and the
clothes is one's Iman.
Taqwa means forbearance, fear and abstinence, but in the Islamic terminology, Taqwa has a distinct
meaning. Taqwa is a high state of heart, which keeps one conscious of Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' 's presence
and His Knowledge, and it motivates him to perform righteous deeds and avoid those, which are
forbidden.
The essence of Taqwa is to make a shield (which guards) against Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' 's anger and
punishment. That shield is to obey His commandments and abstain from His punishment. [as explained by
Ibn Rajab (rahimahullah) in Jami al-Uloom wal-Hikam (190/191)]Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' says: "O you
who believe! Have Taqwa of Allah, as you should have of Him and do not die except as Muslims." [Surah
al-Imraan (3): 102]
Ibn Mas'oud (radhiallahu anhu) said speaking about this verse, Allah is meant to be obeyed, and not
disobeyed; remembered at all times, and not forgotten; and to be thanked; and we are not to be
ungrateful to Him."
Talq Ibn Habeed (a tabi'e) said: "Taqwa (piety) is that you act in obedience to Allah, and hope in His
Mercy, upon a light from Him; and Taqwa is leaving acts of disobedience to Allah out of fear of Him,
upon a light from Him." [(Saheeh) by Shaikh al-Albanee. Related by Ibn Abee Shaybah in Kitaabul-Emaan
(no: 99)]
Taqwa alone is the criterion of greatness in the Sight of Allah. Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' says: "O mankind!
We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may
know one another. Verily, the most honorable of you with Allah is that (believer) who has Taqwa (Godconsciousness, fearing Allah). Verily, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware." [Surah al-Hujurat (49): 13]
Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' has erased all distinctions of racism, cast and colour and made all human beings
equal. He has established a unique criterion for greatness and that is Taqwa. Taqwa is the essence of the
teachings of Allah's Messenger (sallalahu alaihe wa-sallam).Whenever Allah's Messenger (sallalahu alaihe
wa-sallam) sent his Sahabah on a military expedition, he would advise them to have deep-rooted Taqwa of
Allah and he would also advise the rest of his military party likewise. The Pious Predecessors (salaf asSaalih) continued this practice of giving mutual advice of Taqwa after Allah's Messenger sallallahu 'alaihi
wa sallam -passed away. Umar Ibn Khattab (radhiallahu anhu) wrote to his son, Abdullah: "To proceed:
'Verily I advise you to have taqwa (fear) of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, for whoever fears Him, Allah
will protect him, and whoever gives a loan to Him, Allah will reward him, and whoever thanks Him, Allah
will increase Him."
and: "Verily Allah accepts only from those who are the muttaqoon (those who possess Taqwa)." [Surah alMaaidah (19): 71-72]
2. Taqwa makes one deserving of Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' 's Pleasure and Love. Allah says: "Verily, the
most honorable of you in the Sight of Allah is that (believer) who has Taqwa." [Surah al-Hujurat (49): 13]
and: "Whoever fulfils his pledge and has Taqwa of Allah much, then indeed, Allah loves those who are
muttaqoon (those who possess Taqwa)." [Surah Al-Imraan (3): 76]
3. Taqwa causes sins to be forgiven and increases rewards. Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' says: "And whoever
fears Allah and keeps his duty to Him. He will remit his sins from him, and will enlarge his rewards."
[Surah at-Talaaq (65): 5]
4. Taqwa keeps one steadfast on the Straight Path and protects him from deviation. Allah Sub'hanu wa
ta'ala' says: "O you who believe! Have Taqwa of Allah. He will give you a Furqaan (criterion to judge
between right and wrong)." [Surah al-Anfaal (8): 29]
Imaam Ibn al-Katheer (rahimahulla) said in his Tafseer, 'Ibn Abbas, as-Sudde, Ikrimah, adh-Dahhak,
Qataadah and Muqaatil, Ibn Huyyan, all said about 'Furqaan' that it means a way out (from difficulty).
Mujaahid added: 'A way out from difficulty both in this world and in the Hereafter.' In a narration from Ibn
Abbas, he said: "It means, 'Salvation' and in another narration from him 'being helped.' Muhammad Ishaaq
said that it means: 'A criterion to judge between truth and falsehood.' This explanation from Ibn Ishaaq is
the most general of what has proceeded and it is a necessary consequence of it. Since whoever has Taqwa
of Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' by obeying His commands and abandoning what He has prohibited, will be
given the ability to recognize truth from falsehood. This will be the cause for his salvation, his being helped;
and the cause for his worldly affairs being made easier and his happiness on the Day of Judgment. It will be
the cause for his sins to be expiated by Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' , and his being granted forgiveness and
Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' shielding him from the people. It will likewise be the cause of him being the
recipient of a great reward from Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' , as He the Most High says: "O you who believe!
Have Taqwa (fear) of Allah and believe in His Messenger; and He will provide you with a light by which
you will walk." [Surah al-Hdeed (57): 28]
whose speech will dazzle you in this life and he will claim that Allah is witness (to the sincerity of) what is
in his heart, yet he will be among the most vicious enemies (of mankind)." [Surah al-Baqarah (2): 204]
It is mentioned in the Qur'aan that Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' chooses His Awliya (singular 'wali' ling.
meaning Friend) from His slaves based upon their righteousness. Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' mentioned the
characteristics of His Walee saying: "Verily, Awliya of Allah are those who are not overcome by fear of
grief; they are those who believe and have Taqwa." [Surah Yoonus (10): 62-63]
and: "Verily, His close friends (Awliya) are only those with Taqwa but most of them do not realize it."
[Surah al-Anfaal (8): 34] Thus, a Walee of Allah is he, who has Iman, Taqwa and fear of Allah Sub'hanu wa
ta'ala' . Unfortunately, many Muslims have exaggerated in this matter and specified some individuals to be
'Awliya of Allah', while assuming piety and righteousness for them. This practice is incorrect because the
characteristics, which Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' mentions about His Awliya (Iman and Taqwa) are matters
of the heart and knowing them is beyond the capability of the slaves. Also, because these characteristics
are present in every believer in varying degree, therefore, to specify some individuals to these qualities is
unjust
This practice of elevating people to specific ranks of piety and giving them certain status is a practice
imported from Christianity and Hinduism. It was the practice of the Christians that they would elevate
some individuals to great ranks for which they assumed spirituality. And this was the main cause, which
destroyed their religion. It is also seen that tombs are built at the graves of these so-called 'Awliya of Allah'
and prayers are directed to them, either believing them to be intercessors or benefactors. This practice is
in complete contradiction to the teachings of Islam. Islam teaches worship of One True Lord and fearing
Him alone.
TAWAKKUL
Tawakkul shouldnt be mistaken with giving up your efforts thinking that somehow your challenges will get
resolved. Rather striving and working with the attitude that Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' will take care of your
affairs and will help you in getting through your trials is part of you having the Tawakkul on Allah Sub'hanu
wa ta'ala'.
Some scholars have stated that Tawakkul in reality does not deny actually working and striving for
provision, for Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' has decreed that we should work and it is from His ways that he
gives people when they strive. In fact, Allah Almighty ordered us to both depend upon Him and to work, to
take the necessary steps needed to achieve our goals, and so the act of striving for our sustenance is an act
of physical worship while trusting and depending upon Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' is faith in
Him. (Permanent Committee for Research and Verdicts (Fatawa Islamiyah, Vol. 7, Pages 172-174)
Allah says:
So seek provision from Allah and worship Him (alone). [Al-Ankaboot 29: 17]
Shaikh Saalih Al-Fawzaan stated about this verse, Look for sustenance and do not sit around in the
masajid claiming that you are putting your trust in Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' Do not sit in your homes and
claim that your daily sustenance will come to you. This is wrong and a true believer doesnt say such
things. (Shaikh Saalih Al-Fawzaan Haqeeqat-ut-Tawakkul (pg. 15-25))
This obviously applies to not just seeking provisions but in striving to resolve other matters of our lives
just as long we remember and believe that His will is a prerequisite for our matters to get resolved and to
accept what He ultimately decrees.
The scholars have also stated that, other than our efforts that we put in, a Muslim should also combine
Tawakkul with other means, whether they are acts of `Ibadah (worship) like Dua (supplication), Salah
(Prayer), Sadaqah (voluntary charity) or maintaining the ties of kinship, or other material means which
Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' has predestined. (source : alifta.net Fatwa no. 2798)Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala',
also says in the Quran:
[There were] those to whom people said: The people are gathering against you, so fear them. But it
only increased their faith; they said: For us Allah is Sufficient and He is the best Disposer of
affairs (Quran 3:173)
BENEFITS OF TAWAKKUL
One of the major benefits of Tawakkul is that it can relieve us from unnecessary anxiety, worry, and
resulting depression from the challenges that we may be facing. By believing that all our affairs are in Allah
Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' s hands and we can do only what is in our control, we leave the results to Allah
Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' and accept His decree whatever it may be. Ibn Rajab Al-Hanbali Radiallahu ta'ala 'anhu
said, the fruit of tawakkul is the acceptance of Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala's decree. Whoever leaves his
affairs to Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' and then is accepting of what he is given has truly relied on Allah
Sub'hanu wa ta'ala'. Al-Hassan Radiallahu ta'ala 'anhu, and others among the salaf defined tawakkul as
ridhaa (acceptance). (Jami Al-Uloom wa Al-Hikam : A Commentary on 50 Major Hadith)
Lets strive to understand the concept of Tawakkul and to make it part of our belief systems. We will notice
that things will not only get resolved easier with His help, but Tawakkul will also relieve us from the day to
day anxieties and worries associated with the challenges of this life.
.
THE QURAN
Reciting the Quran every day is a healing and a blessing for us, even if it is just one Ayat a day.
Say, It (The Quran ) is a healing for those that believe, a guide and a healing. (Surah Fussilat, v.44)
" Then We gave the Book for inheritance to such of Our slaves whom We chose ( the followers of
Muhammad). Then of them are some who wrong their own selves, and of them are some who follow a
middle course, and of them are some who are, by Allah's leave, foremost in good deeds. That is indeed a
great grace." (sura35:32)
Reading the Quran is a protection and contains many prayers/ verses that are used in Ruqah, and Hijama.
QURAN ON QURAN
To begin with, there are many verses in Quran itself that underscore the majesty of Allah Sub'hanu wa
ta'ala's verses and the Quran itself Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' says ,Say: If the mankind and the jinn were
together to produce the like of this Quran, they could not produce the like thereof, even if they helped
one another[Quran Al-Israa 17:88]
Had We sent down this Quran on a mountain, you would surely have seen it humbling itself and rending
asunder by the fear of Allah. Such are the parables which We put forward to mankind that they may
reflect. [Quran Al-Hashr 59:21]
This is the Book (the Quran), whereof there is no doubt, a guidance to those who are Al-Muttaqoon [the
pious] [Quran Al-Baqarah 2:2]
THE REWARDS OF RECITING QURAN IN QIYAAM AL-LAYL (NIGHT PRAYERS BEFORE FAJR)
We all know from the Quran and the hadith about the countless rewards and benefits of praying and
reciting Quran during the nightly prayers (last one third of the night) As is stated in the hadith narrated by
Abd-Allah ibn Amr ibn al-Aas , radiallahu ta ala hanhumma, in which the Prophet Muhammad- sallallahu
'alaihi wa sallam. said: Whoever recites ten aayaat (verses) inqiyaam will not be recorded as one of the
forgetful. Whoever recites a hundred aayaat (verses) in qiyaam will be recorded as one of the devout,
and whoever prays a thousand aayaat (verses) in qiyaam will be recorded as one of the muqantareen
(those who pile up good deeds). (Reported by Abu Dawood and Ibn Hibbaan. It is a hasan report. Saheeh
al-Targheeb, 635).
Imaam al-Bukhaari Ra'hmatullahi 'alaihi , used to pray qiyaam and tahajjud at night until the time of
suhoor, and he would read between a half and a third of the Quran, and complete it at suhoor every third
night.
alladhi bi yadihil-mulk. Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2891; Ahmad, 7634; Abu Dawood, 1400; Ibn Maajah, 3786.
This hadith was classed as hasan by al-Tirmidhi and by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi, 3/6.
teach it to others [Al-Bukhari] Narrated Aisha: The Prophet sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam- said, Such a
person who recites the Quran and masters it by heart, will be with the noble righteous scribes (in
Heaven). And such a person exerts himself to learn the Quran by heart, and recites it with great
difficulty, will have a double reward. (book #60, Hadith #459)
SALAT ( Prayers )
This part of Tawheed is known as Tawheed Al-'Ibaadah, or the unity of Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' 's worship.
"And your Lord says, Call upon Me; I will respond to you. [Quran 40:60]
"It is You we worship and You we ask for help." [Quran 1:4]
"O you who believe! Seek help in patience and As-Salaat (the prayer). Truly, Allah is with As-Sabirun (the
patient)". (2:153)
The prayer (Salat) brings about sustenance, preserves the health, discards harm, eradicates illness,
strengthens the heart, radiates the face with light, brings joy to the soul and dissipates laziness. Also, the
prayer energizes the limbs, sustains power, opens the chest, nourishes the soul, brings light to the heart,
protects the bounty, shields from the anger (of Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' ), brings about blessings, takes
one away from Shaytaan (Satan) and draws him closer to the Most Beneficent.
In general, the prayer has a profound effect in preserving the health of the body and the heart. The prayer
also discards harmful substances. No two persons would catch a type of disease or suffer an affliction, but
whoever prays among them would suffer the minimal effects of the illness or the affliction.
The prayer has a profoundly wonderful effect in repelling the evils of this life; especially when the prayer is
given its due right inwardly and outwardly. Certainly, the evils of this life and the Next Life would be most
effectively repelled while their good would be most effectively brought forth through prayer. The secret in
this is that the prayer is the connection with Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' The closer the connection is
between the slave and his Lord, the more open the doors of all types of good will be for the slave, while
closing the ways to evil. In this case, the tools of success will descend on the slave from his Lord, along with
good health, many bounties and riches, comfort, delight, joy, happiness and the good things of life
To say your prayers every day, five times a day, brings blessings and a healing. It is also a chance to give
thanks, praise to Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' It is also a chance to ask for forgiveness, repentance, to ask for
help, guidance.
To make dua afterwards, particularly Istikarah, which should be used for every occasion for tasks, queries,
etc. There are many specific duas for ailments, problems, and for help of various sorts.
VIRTUES OF SALAT
Removal of sins and raising of ranks
Narrated from Abu Hurairah Radiallahu ta'ala that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam. said:
"Shall I not tell you something by means of which Allah erases sins and raises people in status?" They
said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. He said: "Doing wudoo' properly at times when it is difficult to do so,
taking many steps to the mosque, and waiting for prayer after prayer. That is Ar-Ribaat." (Muslim, 251)
Praying 12 rakahs a day will build a house in jannah every day for each day that it is done
It was narrated that the Prophet sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam. said: Whoever
prays twelve rakahs during the night and day, a house will be built for him in Paradise: four before Zuhr
and two after, two rakahs after Maghrib, two rakahs after isha and two rakahs before Fajr prayer. (alTirmidhi, no. 380; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami, 6362)
Hellfire will be made haram for one who prays four rakah before and after Zuhr Narrated from Umm
Habeebah radiallahu ta ala mauha, that the Prophet sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam. said: Whoever prays four
(rakahs) before Zuhr and four after it, the Fire will not touch him. (Al-Nasaai (1817) and al-Tirmidhi
(428); classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Nasaai)
Praying Ishraaq after praying in congregation in masjid and doing dhikr will give reward of doing umrah and
hajj. Anas ibn Maalik Radiallahu ta'ala- said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon
him) said: Whoever prays Fajr in congregation then sits remembering Allah until the sun rises, then
prays two rakahs (known as Ishraaq), will have a reward like that of Hajj and Umrah. He said: The
Messenger of Allah sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam. said: In full, in full, in full. (al-Jumuah 535; classed as
hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh Sunan al-Tirmidhi, 480)
Praying janazah prayer and then waiting until the person is buried will be given reward of two qiraat
Prophet sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam. said: Whoever attends the funeral until the prayer has been offered
will have one qiraat (of reward) and whoever attends until the deceased has been buried will have two
qiraats. It was said, What are the two qiraats? He said: Like two great mountains. (al Bukhaari,
1325; Muslim, 945)
Praying fajr will put a person under the protection of Allah Messenger of Allah sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam.
said: Whoever prays Fajr is under the protection of Allah, so do not fall short with regard to the rights of
Allah, for anyone who does that, Allah will seize him and will throw him on his face into the Fire of Hell.
(Muslim (657))
Reciting Ayatul Kursi after every obligatory (fardh) salah allows one to enter jannah. Abu Umaamah said:
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam. said: Whoever recites Aayat al-Kursiy immediately
after each prescribed prayer, there will be nothing standing between him and his entering Paradise
except death. (Ibn Hibbaan in his Saheeh; al-Nasaai in al-Yawm wal-Laylah; al-Tabaraani in al-Kabeer;
classed as saheeh by Ibn Hibbaan in Kitaab al-Salaah and by al-Mundhiri, Ibn Abd al-Haadi and Ibn
Katheer)
Praying isha in the masjid is equal in reward to praying half the night and praying fajr along with it is equal
in reward to praying the whole night Uthmaan Radiallahu ta'ala 'anhu - said: I heard the Messenger of
Allah sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam. say: Whoever prays isha in congregation, it is as if he spent half the
night in prayer, and whoever prays fajr in congregation, it is as if he spent the whole night in prayer.
(Muslim, 656)
Praying in Masjidul Haraam (in Mecca) is better than 100,000 prayers anywhere else Narrated that Jaabir
said: The Messenger of Allah sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam. said: One prayer offered in al-Masjid alHaraam is better than one hundred thousand prayers offered elsewhere. (Ahmad (14284) and Ibn
Maajah (1406); Al-Haafiz said: the men of its isnaad are thiqaat (trustworthy). It was classed as saheeh by
al-Albaani in Irwa al-Ghaleel, 1129)
Waiting for the prayer is rewarded as like being in prayer Hurairah Radiallahu ta'ala- narrated that the
Prophet sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam. said: When he enters the mosque, he is in a state of prayer so long
as the prayer is what is keeping him there, and the angels send blessings on any one of you so long as he
remains in the place where he prayed, saying, O Allah, forgive him, O Allah, have mercy on him (alBukhaari (477) and Muslim (649))
Being present for opening takbeer of prayer in congregation for forty days will keep a person safe from the
Fire and hypocrisy Anas ibn Maalik Radiallahu ta'ala -said: The Messenger of Allah sallallahu 'alaihi wa
sallam.-said, Whoever prays for forty days with the congregation, always being present for the first
takbeer, it will be written that he will be safe from two things: he will be safe from the Fire and safe from
hypocrisy. (al-Tirmidhi, 241; Classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi, 200)
Making zikr (remembrance, tasbih, etc.) while sitting at the place of prayer after it causes angels to pray for
the person until he gets up or breaks his wudu Narrated from Abu Hurairah-Radiallahu ta'ala 'anhu- that
the Messenger of Allahsallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam- said: The angels send blessings upon one of you so
long as he is in his prayer-place where he offered his prayer, so long as he does not break his wudu; they
say: O Allah forgive him, O Allah have mercy on him. (Al-Bukhaari (445) and Muslim (649))
Praying two rakah of dua is sufficient enough for giving thanks of 360 joints of body to Allah Messenger of
Allah sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam- said: "In a human (body) there are 360 joints and man must make a
charity for each one." The people said: "Who can do that, O Messenger of Allah?" He responded: "One
may cover the mucus that one finds in the mosque or remove something harmful from the road. If one
could not do that, he could pray two rak'at of dua and that will be sufficient for him."(Ahmad and Abu
Dawud) Messenger of Allah sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam- said: "Charity is required from every part of your
body daily. Every saying of 'Glory be to Allah (subhan Allah)' is charity. Every saying of 'Praise be to
Allah' is charity. Every saying of 'There is no God but Allah (La ilaha illal Allah)' is charity. Every saying of
'Allah is the Greatest (alhamdulillah)' is charity. Ordering the good is charity. Eradicating the evil is
charity. And what suffices for that (as a charity) are the two rak'at of dua." (Ahmad, Muslim, and Abu
Dawud)
ISTIKARAH
ISTIKARAH
(O Allah! I ask guidance from Your knowledge, And Power from Your Might and I ask for Your great
blessings. You are capable and I am not. You know and I do not and You know the unseen. O Allah! If You
know that this job is good for my religion and my subsistence and in my Hereafter(or said: If it is better for
my present and later needs)Then You ordain it for me and make it easy for me to get, And then bless me
in it, and if You know that this job is harmful to me In my religion and subsistence and in the Hereafter(or
said: If it is worse for my present and later needs)Then keep it away from me and let me be away from it.
And ordain for me whatever is good for me, And make me satisfied with it). The Prophet added that then
the person should name (mention) his need.(Sahih Al-Bukhari Book 21 Hadith 263)
THE ANSWER
If in the dream one sees whiteness (means anything white in colour, for example: milk, white paper, white
sky, white clothes, white light etc.) or greenness (means anything green in colour, for example: grass,
plants, trees, green clothes, green light etc.) then understand that this task is better and if one sees
redness (means anything red in colour, for example: blood, red clothing, red fruit, red light etc.) or
blackness (means anything black in colour, for example: black water, black light, black clothings, black sky,
black wall etc. ) then understand it is bad and avoid it.
If do not remember any dream or do not see any colours then follow your heart. Whatever intention grows
stronger in your heart regarding your targeted work follow it after seven days of Istakhara.
It is recorded in Musnad Ahmad and Sahih Abu Hatim on the authority of Abdullah bin Masud that the
Messenger of Allahsallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam. said,
"Whoever is afflicted with grief and distress and says (see the following Dua), Allah, the Exalted and
Ever-Majestic, will remove his grief and will change his sorrow into happiness." It was said, "O
Messenger of Allah! (Do) we have to learn these words?" He said, "Yes, whoever hears them should learn
them.

O Allah, I am your slave, the son of your slave. My forelock is in Your Hand. Your judgment of me is
In-escapable. Your trial of me is just. I am invoking You by all the names that You call Yourself, that You
have taught to anyone in Your creation, that You have mentioned in Your Book, or that You have kept
unknown. Let the Quran be delight of my heart, the light of my chest, the remover of my sadness and the
pacifier of my worries. (Source: Musnad Ahmad # 1/391)
ibn Al-Qayyim Ra'hmatullahi 'alaihi- provided the following commentary about this hadith and Dua in his
book Al-Fawwaid. The commentary below focuses on the following sentences of the supplication (Dua):
O Allah! I am Your Slave
You have control over me.
Your Judgment is executed on me. Your Decree on me is just.
I ask You by each Name of Yours.
Make the Quran the spring (delight) of my heart.
This great prophetic tradition implies certain matters of knowledge, monotheism and submission (as stated
here):O Allah! I am Your Slave (Submission to Allah) The correct meaning of, "I am Your slave" indicates
the following:
The start of the supplication ("I am Your slave, the son of Your servant, and the son of Your maid
servant") indicates submission and full compliance to Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala', besides the
confession of being His servant along with his forefathers (includes the forefathers of the supplicant
until we reach Adam and Eve.)
The confession shows dire need of Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' and infers that the supplicant is
submissive, obedient, and forbearing. He acts according to his submission to Allah Sub'hanu wa
ta'ala' , not according to his feelings of self-sufficiency. Allah, the Almighty says, which means, "And
the slaves of the Most Beneficent (Allah) are those who walk on the earth in humility and
sedateness" (Quran, Surah AI-Furqan:63)
It indicates full submission, compliance, and repentance to Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala', as well as
being obedient to ones Lord and avoiding His prohibitions, depending on Him, seeking His help and
support, seeking refuge in Him from evil, and finally being related to Him with feelings of love, fear
and hope.
It also indicates, "I am Your slave in all cases, whether young or grown up, living or dead, obedient or
disobedient, in a good condition or otherwise (i.e. being afflicted in the soul, heart, tongue or bodily
organs)."
It means, "I am all Yours, both my money and myself," for the servant and all that which he possesses
belong to his master.
It also means, "You are the one who bestowed all those blessings upon me, so those blessings are
really Yours."
It also includes, "I cant act freely in that which You granted me, either my money or myself, except
by Your orders. This is because no servant can behave freely except with his masters permission. I
can neither hurt nor benefit myself, and I possess no power (of causing) death, nor (of giving) life, nor
of raising the dead.
So, if he really believes in all that which was previously mentioned, then he has confessed his full
submission to Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala'.You have control over me. (Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' Controls
Our Souls)
The sentence (in the Dua), "My forelock is in Your hands," means,"I cannot act freely as far as my soul is
concerned," for how can he act freely when his soul is possessed by his Lord, his forelock is in His hands,
his heart is between two of His fingers, and moreover, his death, life, happiness, misery, good-condition,
and affliction are in the charge of his Lord, The Exalted. By no means is the servant in charge of himself.
The master owns him, and his forelock is in the grasp of a powerful and mighty ruler.
Whenever the servant of Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' confesses the fact that his forelock and the forelock of
all other servants are in the grasp of Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' (i.e. under His control), he will neither fear
nor aspire to any worldly sovereign nor will he overestimate them, because He knows quite well that they
are but subdued servants, whose destiny is controlled by Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala'. Whoever confesses this
fact, surely will stand in need of Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' and whenever witnesses the reality of other
people, he will neither overestimate them nor exaggerate in seeking their support. In this way, his belief,
trust and submission will be turned to Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' alone. This is the reason behind Prophets
Hud-Alaihi salams speech to his people when he said in the Quranic verse:
"I put my trust in Allah, my Lord and your Lord! There is not a moving (living) creature but He has grasp
of its forelock. Verily, my Lord is on the Straight Path (the truth)" Quran (Surah Hud: 56).
Your Judgment is executed on me. Your Decree on me is just.
The sentence, "Your Judgment is executed on me. Your Decree on me is just," implies two themes. The first
theme refers to the execution of His judgment on His servant. The second theme on the other hand implies
praising Him that His Decree is just, in addition to the fact that Allah, The Exalted, is The Dominion, and
that to Him belong all praise and thanks. This is also what Prophet Hud-Alaihi salam referred to in the verse
above: "There is not a moving (living) creature but He has grasp of its forelock," and also his
words, "Verily, my Lord is on the Straight Path (the truth)."
In other words, despite the fact that Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' is The Dominion, The Almighty and The
Controller of the destiny of His servants as their forelocks are in His grasp, yet He is on the straight path. He
is the Just One, Who oversees His servants affairs justly. He is on the straight path in His words, His
actions, His judgment, His destiny, His commandments, His prohibitions, His rewards and His punishment.
His verses are truthful, His Judgment is correct, and His commandments are beneficial. He prohibited all
that which is evil and mischievous. His reward descends upon those who deserve His mercy and grace. His
punishment descends upon those who deserve torment by means of His Justice and wisdom.
"I ask you by each Name of Yours "(Invocation using the Names of Allah)
This expression is an invocation with all the Names of Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' whether they are known or
unknown. It is allowable in the Sight of Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala', as it is an invocation with the Attributes
of Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala', which refer to the connotations of His Names.
Make Quran the Spring (delight) of my heart, the light of my chest, the eliminator of my sorrow, and
the remover of my worries)
In this expression, the word spring means rain, which brings life to the earth. The Quran is compared to
rain because it revives the hearts. The slave when making this Dua, makes a similarity between water,
which is the cause of life, and between light, which is the cause of brightness. So the supplication implies
that the heart is revived (elimination of worries and sorrow) by the spring of the Quran, for it is the light of
the chest, a concept, which combines life and light. Allah, The Almighty says:
Is he who was dead (without Faith by ignorance and disbelief) and We gave him life (by knowledge and
Faith) and set for him a light (of Belief) whereby he can walk amongst men, like him who is in the
darkness (of disbelief, polytheism and hypocrisy) from which he can never come out? Quran (Surah AlAnaam: 122).As the prophet Alaihi salam - instructed, everyone should memorize and learn this hadith and
say it by
understanding its meanings as explained by ibn al-Qayyim Ra'hmatullahi 'alaihi -above. This also shows
that we should make Quran recitation and learning part of our daily lives so Quran can bring the life and
light in our hearts.
Sometimes our duas are not answered. Some of those reasons eventually become obvious to us with the
passage of time and some dont. However, as Muslims we should understand the reasons to help us better
cope with situations when our Duas are not being answered. This can help us influence factors that are
under our direct control.
We know from Quran and Hadith the many reasons behind duas not being accepted. Some of them are the
following:
The Dua that a person is asking may not be good for the person but that person may not know the
reasons yet;
A persons sins may be in the way of accepting Duas;
A person earns his living through unlawful means (haraam means);
A person may be asking for forbidden or sinful items;
In the Quran, Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' says:
And it may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:216]
According to a hadith of the Prophet: sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam.
There is no Muslim who calls upon his Lord with a dua in which there is no sin or severing of family ties,
but Allah will give him one of three things: Either He will answer his prayer quickly, or He will store (the
reward for) it in the Hereafter, or He will divert an equivalent evil away from him. They said: We will
say more dua. He said: Allahs bounty is greater.
Narrated by Ahmad, 10749; Al-Tirmidhi, 3573. Classed as Saheeh by Al-Albaani in Mishkaat Al-Masaabeeh,
2199]
On a related note, Umm Salamah, radiallahu ta ala mauha, said: I heard the Messenger of Allah sallallahu
'alaihi wa sallam.-say:
There is no calamity that befalls one of the Muslims and he responds by saying Innaa Lillaahi wa innaa
ilahi raajioon, Allahumma ujurni fi museebati wukhluf li khayran minha (Truly, to Allah we belong and
truly, to Him we shall return; O Allah, reward me in this calamity and compensate me with something
better than it), but Allah will compensate him with something better than it. [Narrated by Muslim, 918]
Ibn Al-Qayyim Ra'hmatullahi 'alaihi- said:
Whatever Allah has decreed for His believing slave is a blessing even if that is in the form of withholding;
it is a favour even if that is in the form of a trial, and the calamity decreed by him is fair even if it us
painful. [Madaarij Al-Saalikeen, 4/215.]
Many ask if Allah is not being merciful with them when not answering their prayers. (The real reason is
that) What Allah chooses for His slave is better for him than what he chooses for himself. Allah is more
merciful towards His slaves than they themselves or their mothers are. If something happens to them
that they dislike, that is better for them than if it did not happen, so His decree is all kindness and mercy.
If the slave submits to Allah and has certain faith that all dominion belongs to Allah and all things are
under His command, and that He is more merciful to him than he is himself, then he will find peace of
mind regardless of whether his need is met or not. [Madaarij Al-Saalikeen, 2/215]
But when He delivers them, behold! They rebel (disobey Allah) in the earth wrongfully. O mankind! Your
rebellion (disobedience to Allah) is only against your own selves, a brief enjoyment of this worldly life,
then (in the end) unto Us is your return, and We shall inform you of that which you used to do Quran
(Surah Yunus, Verses 22,23)
Shaykh Ibn Al-Sadi Ra'hmatullahi 'alaihi- said in his interpretation of the above: They understood that
they were doomed, so they ended their dependence on created beings and they realized that no one could
save them from this hardship except Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' alone, so they called upon Him, making their
faith pure for Him alone and promising that they would adhere to that, and they said: If You (Allah) deliver
us from this, we shall truly, be of the grateful but when He delivers them, behold! They rebel (disobey
Allah) in the earth wrongfully i.e., they forget that hardship and that dua, and what they committed
themselves to, and they associate others with Allah whom they acknowledge cannot save them from
hardships or protect them from difficulty. Why are they not sincere towards Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' in
worship in times of ease as they are at times of hardship?
But they will face the consequences of their rebellion, hence Allah says: Your rebellion (disobedience to
Allah) is only against your own selves, a brief enjoyment of this worldly life i.e., everything that you
hope when you rebel and turn away from Allah, is to make some worldly gains, which will soon come to
an end, then you will leave them behind: then (in the end) unto Us is your return on the Day of
Resurrection, and We shall inform you of that which you used to do. This is the ultimate warning to
them against persisting in what they are doing. [Tafseer Al-Sadi, 361]
The essence of the above is that while we tend to return to Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' when we are in tough
situations, we forget Him and disobey Him when life becomes easy. Let us not forget that both good times
and bad times are a test from Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala'. If we fail that test (by disobeying Him in good
times, for example), we may not get a respite next time when we are faced with tough times again.
The dua in which there is no transgression will be answered, or else the person will be given something
equal to it. This is the best response. For the thing that he asked for may be unattainable or may be
harmful to the person who prayed or to someone else, but he is ignorant and unaware of the harmful
elements in it. But the Lord is Close and Ever-Responsive, and He is more compassionate towards His slaves
than a mother towards her child. And He is the Most Generous, Most Merciful: if He is asked for a specific
thing and He knows that giving it is not in the best interests of His slave, He will give him something of
equal value, as a father does for his child when he asks him for something that is not good for him, so he
gives him something of equal worth, and for Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' is the highest description.[Majmoo
Al-Fataawa, 14/368]
Many of us hold the view that why make dua to Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' when He has already
preordained all matters? Withholding dua with this idea (or any other) in mind is a serious mistake and we
would be missing on the blessings of Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' .
It was narrated from Ibn Umar Radiallahu ta'ala 'anhu -that the Prophet sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam.-said:
Dua may be of benefit with regard to what has already happened or what has not yet happened, so
adhere to dua, O slaves of Allah.[Narrated by Al-Tirmidhi, 3548 and classed as hasan by Al-Albaani in
Saheeh Al-Jaami, 3409]
In a hadith it says: The decree cannot be overturned except by dua.[Fataawa Noor ala al-Darb by Shaykh
Ibn Uthaymeen Ra'hmatullahi 'alaihi -,Shaykh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah said in Majmoo Al-Fataawa [8/69]:
If a person says that he does not say dua or ask of Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala', because he relies on the divine
decree, he is also erring, because Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' has made dua and asking means of attaining His
forgiveness, mercy, guidance, support and provision. If good is decreed for a person he will attain by
means of dua what he cannot attain without dua. What Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' has decreed and knows
with regard to His slaves circumstances and destinies is only decreed on the basis of means, and decrees
will be fulfilled at the appointed times. There is everything that happens in this world or in the Hereafter
happens on the basis of cause and effect; Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' is the Creator of both cause and effect.
Disregarding the principle of cause and effect is contrary to reason.
Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen said in Al-Majmoo Al-Thameen min Fataawa Fadeelat Al-Shaykh Muhammad ibn
Saalih Al-Uthaymeen [1/157]:
Dua is one of the means by which what is asked for is attained. In fact it wards off the divine decree and
nothing wards off the divine decree except dua, and that may happen in two ways. For example, a sick
person may pray to Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' for healing and be healed, and were it not for the dua he
would have remained sick, but he was healed by means of the dua. But we say: Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala'
decreed that the sick person would be healed from this sickness by means of dua, and this is what was
decreed. He thinks that were it not for the dua he would have remained sick, but in fact he did not ward off
the divine decree, because the basic principle is that dua was decreed and that the healing would come by
means of this dua, and this is the original decree that was decreed from eternity. The same applies to
everything that is decreed to happen through some means or cause. Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' has made
this means the cause for the thing to happen, and that was decreed from eternity, before it happened.
MORE DUAS
Al-Bara' Ibn `Aazib, Radiallahu ta'ala 'anhu, narrates: The Prophet sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam. said to me,
"Whenever you go to bed, perform ablution like the one you perform for the prayer, lie on your right side
and say,
"Allahumma aslamtu wajhi ilaika, wa fawadtu 'Amri ilaika, wa alja'tu Zahri ilaika raghbatan wa
rahbatan ilaika. La Malja'a wa la manja minka illa ilaika. Allahumma amantu bikitabika-l-ladhi
anzalta wa bina-biyika-l ladhi arsalta"
(O Allah! I surrender to You and entrust all my affairs to You and depend upon You, fearing You, and
reposing my hope in You. There is no fleeing from You, and there is no protection and safety except with
You, O Allah! I believe in Your Book (the Qur'an) which You have revealed and in Your Prophet
(Muhammad) whom You have sent).
Then if you die on that very night, you will die as believer (in the religion of Islam). Let the aforesaid words
be your last utterance (before sleep
Also on this issue, Abu Hurairah Radiallahu ta'ala 'anhu- was quoted as saying: The Messenger of Allah,
sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam. used to tell us that when any one of us wanted to sleep, he should lie on his
right side, then say
Allahumma Rabb al-samaawaati wa Rabb al-ard wa Rabb al-Arsh il-Azeem, Rabbana wa Rabba

(O Allah, Lord of the heavens and the earth, and Lord of the Mighty Throne, our Lord and Lord of all things,
Splitter of the seed and the date stone, Revealer of the Tawraat (Torah), the Injeel (Gospel) and the

have full control over them]. O Allah, You are the First and there is nothing before You; You are the Last
and there is nothing after You. You are the Manifest (az-Zaahir) and there is nothing above You; You are
the Hidden (al-Baatin) and there is nothing beyond You. Settle our debt and spare us from poverty).
(Narrated by Muslim, 2713).
Abu Hurayrah Radiallahu ta'ala 'anhu- was also quoted as saying: Abu Bakr Radiallahu ta'ala 'anhu- said:
O Messenger of Allah, teach me something that I can say in the morning and in the evening. He said: Say,
Allahumma Aalim al-ghaybi wal-shahaadah, Faatir al-samawaati wal-ard, Rabba kulli shayin
wa maleekahu, ashhadu an laa ilaaha illa anta. Aoodhi bika min sharri nafsi wa min sharr ilshaytaan wa sharakihi
(O Allah, Knower of the seen and the Unseen, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Lord and Sovereign of
all things, I bear witness that there is no god except You. I seek refuge in You from the evil of my own self
and from the evil and traps of Satan).Say this in the morning and in the evening, and when you go to
bed. (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 3392; Abu Dawood, 5067).
To give small sums of money on a daily basis is recommended, or a reasonable sum as and when you can.
This is a form of blessing and healing too. For it is also an act of repentance or penetence. Charity, also
consists of doing good deeds, such as giving gifts, helping others, giving advice, offering your services ] for
free, moving objects, obstructions out the way on a path. Smiling, saying salam, etc.
"Those who spend of their wealth [in charity] by night and by day, in secret and in public have their
reward with their Lord. For them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve." [Quran 2:274]
"If you disclose your alms-giving, it is well; but if you conceal them and give them to the poor, that is
better for you. (Allaah) will expiate you some of your sins. And Allaah is Well-Acquainted with what you
do. " [Quran 2:271]From Ubu Umamah Radiallahu ta'ala 'anhu- who said, The Messenger of Allah (saw)
said treat your sick by giving sadaqah
WHAT IS ZAKAT
Zakat is the most effective means to improve the economic condition of the have-nots. It is not a mere tax,
but a form of worship whereby a man comes close to his Lord. The Muslims have, therefore, been enjoined
to pay Zakat with the same sense of earnestness and devotion in which the seeker of the pleasure of the
Lord observes the prayer. It should also be remembered that Zakat or Sadaqah in Islam is an obligatory act
which every Muslim is enjoined to perform if he is sincere in his belief in Allah and the Hereafter. Thus
there is no burden of obligation on one who receives Zakat, but a sense of thankfulness and gratitude on
the part of the giver, since he has been enabled by the recipient to discharge his obligation which he owes
to Allah and society.
The importance of Zakat can be understood from the fact that it has been mentioned at eighty two places
in the Holy Qur'an in close connection with prayer. The companions of the Holy Prophet sallallahu 'alaihi
wa sallam. knew its basic importance in Islam. It is a known fact that after the death of the Holy Prophet
sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam- some of the tribes who believed in Oneness of God and observed prayer,
refused to pay Zakat, and the first Caliph Abu Bak Radiallahu ta'ala 'anhu- in an answer to the advice of
Hadrat 'Umar Radiallahu ta'ala 'anhu- to show tolerance towards them, said in explicit terms "By Allah, I
would definitely wage war against them who separate prayer from Zakat."
It is to be remembered that in spite of the modern advances in economic systems, method of distribution
of wealth, and concern for the rights of the human beings to have their basic needs met, no ideology or
economic system has been able to develop any institution comparable to Zakat for dealing with the
problem of poverty while at the same time offering a solution to class rivalries and hatred.
Our Prophet sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam. was the one who expended the most from what Allah Sub'hanu
wa ta'ala' gave to him. If anyone wanted anything from the Messenger sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam, he
would certainly give, whether it was much or whether it was little; he always gave whatever he could. The
pleasure he took from giving was more than the happiness of the person who received. Our Prophe
sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam. t specified four types of possessions from which to give alms (zakat):
Agricultural products and fruits,
Animals (camel, cattle),
Gold and silver,
All sorts of commercial goods.
You who believe! Give away some of what We have provided for you before a Day arrives on which there
is no trading, no close friendship and no intercession... (Surah Al-Baqara, 254)
Cooperation had a great place in our Prophets sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam. life. He informs us that the best
of all aids given are the ones given in secret. Our Prophet sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam. says:
"Seven are (the persons) whom Allah would give protection with His Shade on the Day when there would
be no shade but that of Him (i.e. on the Day of Judgment, and they are): a person who gives charity
and conceals it (to such an extent) that the right hand does not know what the left has given: and a
person who remembered Allah in privacy and his eyes shed tears." (Sahih Muslim, Book 005, Number
2248)
Satan inspires fear for future in people so as to hinder them from giving away from that which Allah
Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' has blessed them with. This way, he drifts them into stinginess. Our Prophet sallallahu
'alaihi wa sallam. says that this is a great danger for believers.
"Spend and do not calculate, (for) Allah would calculate in your case; and do not hoard, otherwise Allah
would be withholding from you." (Sahih Muslim, Book 005, Number 2244)
"He who gives time to one who is financially hard up (in the payment of debt) or writes off his debt, Allah
will provide him His shadow." (Sahih Muslim, Book 042, Number 7149)
"If any owner of gold or silver does not pay what is due on him, when the Day of Resurrection would
come, plates of fire would be beaten out for him; these would then be heated in the fire of Hell and his
sides, his forehead and his back would be cauterized with them. Whenever these cool down, (the process
is) repeated during a day the extent of which would be fifty thousand years, until judgment is
pronounced among servants." (Sahih Muslim, Book 005, Number 2161)
O you who believe! Spend of that with which We have provided for you, before a Day comes when there
will be no bargaining, nor friendship, nor intercession. And it is the disbelievers who are the Zaalimoon
(wrongdoers) [al-Baqarah 2:254]
The likeness of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allaah, is as the likeness of a grain (of corn);
it grows seven ears, and each ear has a hundred grains. Allaah gives manifold increase to whom He wills.
And Allaah is All-Sufficient for His creatures needs, All-Knower.262. Those who spend their wealth in the
Cause of Allaah, and do not follow up their gifts with reminders of their generosity or with injury, their
reward is with their Lord. On them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve [al-Baqarah 2:261-262]
O you who believe! Spend of the good things which you have (legally) earned, and of that which We
have produced from the earth for you, and do not aim at that which is bad to spend from it, (though) you
would not accept it save if you close your eyes and tolerate therein. And know that Allaah is Rich (Free of
all needs), and Worthy of all praise [al-Baqarah 2:267]
Believe in Allaah and His Messenger (Muhammad), and spend of that whereof He has made you
trustees. And such of you as believe and spend (in Allaahs way), theirs will be a great reward [alHadeed 57:7]
It was narrated that Abu Hurairah Radiallahu ta'ala 'anhu said: The Messenger of Allaah sallallahu
'alaihi wa sallam said: Whoever gives charity equal to a date from good (halal) earnings for Allaah
does not accept anything but that which is good Allaah will take it in His right hand and tend it for the
one who gave it as any one of you tends his foal, until it becomes like a mountain. Narrated by alBukhaari, 1344; Muslim, 1014.
It was narrated from Abu Hurairah Radiallahu ta'ala 'anhu that the Prophet sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam
said: There is no day on which the people get up but two angels come down and one of them says, O
Allaah, give in compensation to the one who spends (in charity), and the other says, O Allaah, destroy
the one who withholds. Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1374; Muslim, 1010.
It was narrated that Abu Saeed al-Khudri Radiallahu ta'ala 'anhu said: The Messenger of Allaah
sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam went out on Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha to the prayer place, and when he
had finished (the prayer) he preached to the people and enjoined them to give charity. He said, O
people, give in charity! Then he went over to the women and said, O women, give in charity for I have
seen that you are the majority of the people of Hell. When he went home, Zaynab the wife of Ibn
Masood came seeking permission to see him. It was said, O Messenger of Allaah, here is Zaynab. He
said, Which Zaynab? It was said, The wife of Ibn Masood. He said, Yes, let her in. So they let her in
and she said, O Prophet of Allaah, today you enjoined charity, and I have some jewellery which I
wanted to give in charity, but Ibn Masood claims that he and his child have more right to receive it in
charity. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: Give it in charity to Ibn
Masood, for your husband and your child have the most right that you should give it to them in
charity. Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1393; Muslim, 80.
It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah Radiallahu ta'ala 'anhu that the Messenger of Allaah sallallahu
'alaihi wa sallam said: Allaah said: Spend, O son of Adam, and I shall spend on you. Narrated by alBukhaari, 5073; Muslim, 993.
This category of Tawheed is known as Tawheed Al-Asmaa' Was-Siffaat or the unity of Allah Sub'hanu wa
ta'ala' 's Names and Attributes.
"Allah there is no deity except Him. To Him belong the best names." [Quran 20:8]
"There is nothing like unto Him and He is the Hearing, the Seeing." [Quran 42:11]
To recite of listen to a recording of these beautiful names of Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala', will bring healing
and comfort. Just recently there have been scientific studies done to prove this. Certain names can affect
certain parts of the body / ailments.
"The most beautiful names belong to Allah: so call on him by them." (Glorious Qur'an 7:180)
He is Allah the Creator, the Maker, the Fashioner; His are the most excellent names; whatever is in the
heavens and the earth declares His glory; and He is the Mighty, the Wise. (Glorious Qur'an 59:24)
Those who believe, and whose hearts find satisfaction in the remembrance of Allah: for without doubt in
the remembrance of Allah do hearts find satisfaction. (Glorious Qur'an 13:28)
TASBEEH
ZIKR / TASBEEH
There are many formulas and well known recitations. These will bring about comfort, healing and
blessings. To make this part of your daily routine after salat is advisable. (Zikr is a form of Tasbeeh, or
Tasbeeh is a form of Zikr.)
"I seek forgiveness from Allah, my Lord, from every sin I committed knowingly or unknowingly, secretly or
openly, and I turn towards Him from the sin that I know and from the sin that I do not know. Certainly You,
You (are) the knower of the hidden things and the Concealer (of) the mistakes and the Forgiver (of) the
sins. And (there is) no power and no strength except from Allah, the Most High, the Most Great".
(O Allah! Certainly I seek protection with You from, that I associate partner with You anything and I know
it. And I seek forgiveness from You for that I do not know it. I repented from it and I made myself free from
disbelief and polytheism and the falsehood and the back-biting and the innovation and the tell-tales and
the bad deeds and the blame and the disobedience, all of them. And I submit and I say (there is) none
worthy of worship except Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.)

RUQAH
There are two types of Ruqyah: Legislative Ruqyah and the polytheistic Ruqyah, which is forbidden. The
legislative Ruqyah must fulfil the following conditions:
1. That it is a Ruqyah using the Words of Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' the Most High, or by His Names &
Attributes, or using Prophetic duas (supplications)
2. That it is (recited) in the Arabic language or by what (ever language) its meanings are known.
3. That the (the patient) believes that the Ruqyah itself cannot affect him but that the effectiveness is from
Allah the Most High, and;
4. That the Ruqyah does not (contain) any prohibited feature; the Ruqyah is not performed during
janaabah (major impurity), or in a grave or toilet.
Ibn Hajr said (Fath 10/206) "The Scholars have agreed upon the permissibility of Ruqyah when these
conditions are all met." (Refer to Ar/Ruqiyatush/Shar'eeyah,D.Abdullahat/Tayyaar,p.79
Evil Eye----- is very common, is caused by a look from someone, with bad thoughts of envy, jealousy
towards another person.
"Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the dawn. From the evil of what He has created. And from the evil of the
utterly dark night when it comes. And from the evil of those who blow on knots. And from the evil of the
envious when he envies." (al-Falaq: 1-5)
Magic------is issued upon a person by a magician, with the aid of Jinns, amulets, and taweez.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Whoever blows on knots practices magic, and
whoever practices magic is a mushrik (polytheist)." (Reported by at-Tabarani)
`Abdullah ibn Mas`ud reported, "Anyone who goes to a diviner, a practitioner of magic or a soothsayer,
asking something and believing in what he says, denies what was revealed to Muhammad." (Reported
by al-Bazzarand Abu Ya`la)
Jinn------These can possess a person, permanently, or temporarily or periodically, by their own will or by a
magician.
Ruqah can combat these problems of metaphysical issues, along -side the use of Hijama.
"And they followed what the Shaitans chanted of sorcery in the reign of Sulaiman, and Sulaiman was not
an unbeliever, but the Shaitans disbelieved, they taught men sorcery and that was sent down to the two
angels at Babel, Harut and Marut, yet these two taught no man until they had said, "Surely we are only
a trial, therefore do not be a disbeliever." Even then men learned from these two, magic by which they
might cause a separation between a man and his wife; and they cannot hurt with it anyone except with
Allah's permission, and they learned what harmed them and did not profit them, and certainly they
know that he who bought it should have no share of good in the hereafter and evil was the price for
which they sold their souls, had they but known this." (Al-Baqarah: 102)
close affinity between spirit possession and mental illness is not unique to Islam and similar beliefs are held
in Hinduism, Buddhism and Judaism. Among contemporary Evangelical Christians, demonic possession is
considered to be one possible cause of mental illness, with those displaying symptoms of possession being
subject to deliverance. It is recognised that a certain percentage of psychotic and less severely disturbed
individuals attribute their symptoms to the devil.
These duas can be used singularly or in conjunction with ruqah. If you feel uneasy or frightened, then use
these duas at any time you like.
"Inna lil-lah-wa inn a ilaihi rajiun
(We are for Allah, and we will return to Him).
The above dua is one used most frequent in times of calamity.
In such cases, the jinn may speak from inside of that person and address the one who is reading verses
from the Qur'aan over him; the reciter may take a promise from the jinn never to come back, and other
things concerning which there are very many reports which are widespread among the people.
So the protection which will prevent the evil of the jinn is for a person to recite that which is narrated in
the Sunnah as being effective in providing protection, such as Ayat al-Kursi, for if a person recites Aayat alKursi at night, he will continue to have protection from Allaah, and no shaytaan will come near him until
morning. And Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala'is the Protector.' (Majmoo' Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymeen,
1/287-288)
If one is mentioning the jinn purely of themselves, they are called jinni.*
If one is mentioning the jinn that live among mankind, they are called aamar whose plural is amaar.
If one is mentioning the ones that antagonize the young, they are called arwaah.
If one is mentioning the evil ones that antagonize humans they are called shaitan for the singular
[and shayateen for plural].
5. If they cause even more harm and become strong, they are called afreet."**
*Notice the similar sound between jinni and Englishs "genie". TV and other media have twisted the
concept of jinn; however, it is interesting to note its origin is from Islam. "I Dream of Jeannie" is a TV show
based around a Genie (jinni, plural of jinn). In this show, Jeannie, the genie, frequently was given a request
and the requestor never quite got what was requested as she was always creating unintentional
mischief. However we understand that the shaitan among the jinn antagonize humans, not that they are
kind beings who accidentally mess up on occasion. Those who seek aid (such as asking for favours or
making request) from the jinni will find deception and a twisted type of aid that doesn't really meet the
requestor's original request, but that satisfies the shaytaanic jinn's desire for evil.
**An Ifrt (strong) from the jinns said: "I will bring it to you before you rise from your place (council). And
verily, I am indeed strong, and trustworthy for such work." [The Noble Qur'an 27:39]
DISTANCING ONESELF
Fiqh 4.124
Anas Radiallahu ta'ala 'anhu ,reported that the Prophet sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam. said, "The barrier
between the eyes of the Jinn and the nakedness of the Children of Adam is [created] when a Muslim
discards a garment and says, 'In the name of Allah besides Whom there is no other god'." (Ibn As-Sinni)
Hadith - Ahmad, an-Nasa'i, Dawud, al-Hakim and al-Baihaqi
Qatadah related from 'Abdullah ibn Sarjas who said, "The Messenger of Allah forbade urination into a
hole." Said Qatadah, "What is disliked about urinating into a hole?" Said he, "It is the residence of the
jinn." [Ibn Khuzaimah and Ibn as-Sakin classified it as sahih]
ALLAH WILL FILL HELL WITH JINNS AND MEN ALL TOGETHER
The Noble Qur'an - As-Saaffaat 37:158
And they have invented a kinship between Him and the jinns, but the jinns know well that they have
indeed to appear (before Him) (i.e. they will be brought for accounts).
The Noble Qur'an - Huud 11:119
Except him on whom your Lord has bestowed His Mercy (the follower of truth - Islmic Monotheism) and
for that did He create them. And the Word of your Lord has been fulfilled (i.e. His Saying): "Surely, I shall
fill Hell with jinns and men all together."
The Noble Qur'an - Al-An'aam 6:130, 131
O you assembly of jinns and mankind! "Did not there come to you Messengers from amongst you,
reciting unto you My Verses and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours?" They will say: "We
bear witness against ourselves." It was the life of this world that deceived them. And they will bear
witness against themselves that they were disbelieversThis is because your Lord would not destroy
the (populations of) towns for their wrongdoing (i.e. associating others in worship along with Allh)
while their people were unaware (so the Messengers were sent).
The Noble Qur'an - Al-A'raaf 7:179
And surely, We have created many of the jinns and mankind for Hell. They have hearts wherewith they
understand not, they have eyes wherewith they see not, and they have ears wherewith they hear not
(the truth). They are like cattle, nay even more astray; those! They are the heedless ones.
FORTUNE-TELLERS/SOOTHSAYERS
Hadith - Al-Bukhari 7.657, Narrated 'Aisha, radiallahu ta ala mauha
Some people asked Allah's Apostle sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam- about the foretellers. He said. -They are
nothing." They said, -O Allah's Apostle! Sometimes they tell us of a thing which turns out to be true."
Allah's Apostle sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam said, "A Jinn snatches that true word and pours it into the ear of
his friend (the foreteller) (as one puts something into a bottle). The foreteller then mixes with that word
one hundred lies."
MUSLIM JINN
The Noble Qur'an - Az-Zaariyaat 51:56
And I (Allh) created not the jinns and humans except they should worship Me (Alone).
Hadith - Tirmidhi #861, Narrated Jabir ibn Abdullah, Tirmidhi reported and said: This is a gharib hadith.
Allah's Messenger came out to his companions and recited Surah ar-Rahman (55) from the beginning to
the end, but they remained silent. Thereupon he said: I recited this before the Jinn on the night of Jinn,
and their response was better than that of yours. When I came to these words: `Then which of the
favours of your Lord do you deny?' They said: Our Lord, there is nothing that we deny of Thy favour; to
Thee is praise due.
The Noble Qur'an - Al-Jinn 72:1-14
1. Say (O Muhammad): "It has been revealed to me that a group (from three to ten in number) of
jinns listened (to this Quran). They said: 'Verily! We have heard a wonderful Recital (this Quran)!
2. 'It guides to the Right Path, and we have believed therein, and we shall never join (in worship)
anything with our Lord (Allh).
3. 'And exalted be the Majesty of our Lord, He has taken neither a wife, nor a son (or offspring or
children).
4. 'And that the foolish among us [i.e. Ibls (Satan) or the polytheists amongst the jinns] used to
utter against Allh that which was wrong and not right.
5. 'And verily, we thought that men and jinns would not utter a lie against Allh.
6. 'And verily, there were men among mankind who took shelter with the masculine among the
jinns, but they (jinns) increased them (mankind) in sin and disbelief.
7. 'And they thought as you thought, that Allh will not send any Messenger (to mankind or jinns).
8. 'And we have sought to reach the heaven; but found it filled with stern guards and flaming fires.
9. 'And verily, we used to sit there in stations, to (steal) a hearing, but any who listens now will find
a flaming fire watching him in ambush.
10. 'And we know not whether evil is intended for those on earth, or whether their Lord intends for
them a Right Path.
11. 'There are among us some that are righteous, and some the contrary; we are groups each having
a different way (religious sect, etc.).
12. 'And we think that we cannot escape (from the punishment of) Allh in the earth, nor can we
escape (from the punishment) by flight.
13. 'And indeed when we heard the Guidance (this Quran), we believed therein (Islmic
Monotheism), and whosoever believes in his Lord shall have no fear, either of a decrease in the
reward of his good deeds or an increase in punishment for his sins.
14. 'And of us some are Muslims (who have submitted to Allh, after listening to this Quran), and of
us some are Al-Qsitn (disbelievers those who have deviated from the Right Path)'. And
whosoever has embraced Islm (i.e. has become a Muslim by submitting to Allh), then such have
sought the Right Path."
SHAYTAAN
The shaytaan (satan) can be human or jinn...
The Noble Qur'an - Al-An'aam 6:112
And so We have appointed for every Prophet enemies - Shaytin (devils) among mankind and jinns,
inspiring one another with adorned speech as a delusion (or by way of deception). If your Lord had so
willed, they would not have done it, so leave them alone with their fabrications.
Know your enemy...
The Noble Qur'an - Faatir 35:6
Surely, Shaitn (Satan) is an enemy to you, so take (treat) him as an enemy. He only invites
his Hizb (followers) that they may become the dwellers of the blazing Fire.
The Noble Qur'an - Az-Zukhruf 43:62
And let not Shaitn (Satan) hinder you (from the right religion, i.e. Islmic Monotheism), Verily, he
(Satan) to you is a plain enemy.
Shaitaan tells you to fear people instead of Allah, swt...
The Noble Qur'an - Az-Zukhruf 43:62
It is only Shaitn (Satan) that suggests to you the fear of his Auliy' [supporters and friends (polytheists,
disbelievers in the Oneness of Allh and in His Messenger, Muhammad)], so fear them not, but fear Me,
if you are (true) believers.

parts of the sons of Adam as one of them enters the privy is that he should say: In the name of
Allah. [This hadith has been transmitted by Tirmidhi and he said: It is a gharib hadith and its isnad is not
sound.]

al-Falaq and an-Nas were revealed. After they were revealed he stuck to them and discarded everything
beside them. [Transmitted by Tirmidhi]
Hadith - Al-Tirmidhi 4563, Narrated Abu Sa'id al-Khudri
Allah's Messenger sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam- used to seek refuge in Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala- from jinn
and the evil eye in men till the Mu'awwidhatan came down, after which he made use of them and
abandoned everything else. [Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted it, Tirmidhi saying this is a hasan gharib
tradition]

SAUM / FASTING
"O you who believe! observing As-Saum (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those
before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqoon (the pious). (2:183)
The act of fasting has many benefits to health. It is also a requirement during Ramadam, for the sake of
Allah only. It is beneficial in this period also for protection against the fire of Jahannam. Fasting rests the
body, and allows the body to gain strength and cleanse its self. The Sunnah days for fasting outside of
Ramadam, are 13th, 14th, 15th of each month. Also Sunnah is to fast every other day, or on a Monday and a
Thursday.
again from the mercy of Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala -that He taught us many virtues of fasting so that we get
encouraged even more. I will focus mainly on the virtues of forgiveness, salvation from Hell fire and reward
of Paradise, but before that I shall mention few other virtues that are not less important than the latter.
HIJAMA ( Cupping )
Bukhari narrated that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said: There is cure in three
substances, a drink of honey, incision with a knife used for Hijamah (cupping) and cauterizing by fire.
And I forbid my Nation from cauterizing by fire".
As for Hijamah, lbn Majah narrated in his Sunan that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said:
"During the night of lsraa (the overnight journey from Makkah to Jerusalem and then to the heavens),
every company (of angels) that I passed by would say, "O Muhammad! Order your Ummah (nation) to
use Hijamah (wet cupping)".
This is a lost art and highly prized Sunnah practice that is slowly being revived. It is a healing power not to
be under estimated or dismissed lightly. The affects can be instant, and some a slow but recognisable
improvement in the body. If you have any ailment of any kind, even Cancer, this is the recommended cure
of use. I mention cure, but it is a word that the medical professions say Hijamists cannot use. So, instead
of cure , we could say be a major vast improvement without the use of drugs or medical intervention.
There are certain days of the month that Hijama can be performed for its maximum effect. But to be
honest it can be done on any day you like. It is best and most advisable to fast before having Hijama done,
and to be in a state of wuzu (purification/ ablution) also recommended after having Hijama done is to
compliment it with Ruqah. For Hijama can also be effective in removing Jinn, magic and evil eye.
Cupping is a method of relieving local congestion by applying a partial vacuum that is created in a cup(s),
either by heat or by suction. Cupping has been used for thousands of years. Although it is often associated
with Traditional Chinese Medicine, the entire world once knew this of therapy and used it. The Ancient
Egyptians, Greeks and Chinese used cupping therapy. The oldest recorded medical text book, Ebers
Papyrus, written in approximately 1550 BCE in Egypt, mentions cupping (Curtis, 2005). In the UK, the
practice of cupping therapy also dates back a long time in one of their leading medical journals, The Lancet.
It was named after this practice as it refers to the surgical instrument that can scrape to perform a style of
cupping. Bleeding Cupping - Also called Full Cupping or Wet Cupping. It is the most frequently used, oldest,
and often the most effective method. A surgical instrument is used to scrape the skin and the cup is
then applied to collect blood.
In the Journal of Biomechanics (2005), researchers L. M. Thama, H. P. Leea, and C. Lua state that "Cupping
is known to be an effective alternative to needles in stimulating acupoints in acupuncture treatment. One
of the major advantages must be that transmission of blood-borne diseases can be avoided since the skin
is not penetrated." Therefore, we can use cupping as an alternative to acupuncture, or in conjunction with
it. Many researchers have investigated and demonstrated the benefits of cupping.
Bukhari narrated that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said: "There is cure in three
substances, a drink of honey, incision with a knife used for Hijamah (cupping) and cauterizing by fire.
And I forbid my Nation from cauterizing by fire".
Abu Abdullab Al-Maziri said, "Plethoric (excessive substances) conditions are either sanguineous (bloody),
bilious (phlegm), or melancholic, and curing sanguineous plethora entails extracting the blood. If plethora
was from the other three types, its cure is in softening the stool as warranted for each disease. Prophet
Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam has indicated that honey is used as a laxative and that cupping is
used to extract [septic] blood. Some people said that when the slash by a cupping knife does not work, the
last resort is branding by fire (cauterizing). Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam mentioned
branding by fire as a last resort when the body has a strong resistance against medicine, rendering it
ineffective. Our beloved Prophet then said: "I forbid my Ummah (Muslim Nation) from branding by fire
(cauterizing)", and in another narration, "I do not like to be branded by fire". Cauterizing by fire should be
the last resort and only used when warranted. The fire should not be the first choice because of the
intense pain it causes, which can be more severe than the pain with which a patient is already suffering.
Some doctors said that diseases related to the temperament are either material or non-material. The
material types are either cold, hot, wet or dry or a combination of these conditions. The four conditions,
hotness and coldness are effected; while the other two, wetness and dryness are usually affected When
one of the two effective temperaments is stronger than the other, one of the affected temperaments
usually accompanies it. Every type of temperament in the body has two parts, effective and affected.
Temperamental ailments are usually caused by whichever effective condition is stronger, hotness or
coldness. Our beloved Prophets statement directs us to the origin of ailments, hotness and coldness. If the
ailment was hot, the cure entails extracting the blood by cupping or puncturing the veins, both of which
help extract the septic matter, cooling the temperament. If the ailment is cold, we treat it with heat, such
as by taking honey. If we need to extract the cold material that has caused the ailment, honey helps in this
case because it leads the various substances to maturity along with its other qualities of cleansing,
softening, soothing and purging the affected organs. In this case, the septic material will be gently
extracted while saving the body from the abuse of using strong laxatives.
Physical ailments are either acute, not needing cauterization, because they would soon be neutralized, or
chronic ailments, for which cauterizing the proper organ is the best remedy after extracting the septic
substances. Chronic diseases usually result from thick, cold septic substances residing in the affected
organ, ailing it, spoiling its constitution and, thereby, inflaming the parts of the body that are directly
connected to the affected organ. Therefore, cauterizing should be used to dissipate and extract the septic
substances in the affected organ with fire.
The Hadith explains treatments for all type of physical ailments, just as we learned the treatment method
for all simple ailments (accompanied by fever) from the Hadith, "The heat of the fever is a breath of the
Hell Fire; cool it with water".
HADITH ON HIJAMAH
As for Hijamah, lbn Majah narrated in his Sunan that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said:
"During the night of lsraa (the overnight journey from Makkah to Jerusalem and then to the heavens),
every company (of angels) that I passed by would say, "O Muhammad! Order your Ummah (nation) to
use Hijamah (wet cupping)".
In addition, in the Sahihain, it is narrated that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam once had his
blood cupped (medically) and paid the person who applied the Hijamah (cupping).
Furthermore, in the Sahihain it is narrated: Abu Taybah cupped Allahs Messenger, sallallahu 'alaihi wa
sallam. who then ordered that Abu Taybah be paid one Saa (a measure pertaining to food) of dates and
ordered his masters to reduce his tax (as he was a slave and had to pay a tax to them). Prophet
Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam then said: "Hijamah (Cupping) is among your best remedies".
In Tirmizi, it is narrated by Abbaad Bin Mansoor that he said: I heard Ikramah saying that Abdullah Ibn
Abbas Radi Allaho Anh had three slaves who were Hajjaam (a person who performs cupping), two of them
used to work for him & his family (probably at his garden & to carry the grains & load to his house) & one
of those slaves performed cupping. Abdullah Ibn Abbas Radi Allaho Anh reported that Prophet Muhammad
Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said : "The best of slaves is HAJJAAM (one who performs Hijamah ~ wet
cupping), Hijamah takes out the blood, & removes the pain from the back & enhances the vision".
Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said "The best dates for Hijamah are 17th, 19th & 21st of
the lunar month" and he also said "The best among your treatments is Sa'oot (taking medicine through
the nose), Ladood (taking medicine by mouth), Hijamah (Wet Cupping) & Mashee (cleaning the
stomach).
The benefits of cupping include cleansing the exterior parts of the body more than puncturing the veins, or
puncturing the veins, is better when used to extract blood from the internal parts of the body. Cupping
entails removing blood from the various parts of the skin.
Using either Hijamah (cupping) or Fasd (puncturing the veins) depends on the time of year, the area, the
age and state of the ailing person. For instance, cupping is more beneficial than puncturing the veins in
warm areas, warm weather and hot tempered people, whose blood is near to maturity (concerning the
septic substances in the blood). In this case, the septic, maturing blood will collect near the skin. Cupping
extracts the septic blood more efficiently than puncturing the veins. This is why using cupping for children
and those who cannot bear puncturing the veins is better and more useful.
Doctors affirm that Hijamah (cupping) is better used in warm areas than puncturing the veins and that
cupping is preferred in the middle of the month or soon after, especially in the last quarter of the month.
In the beginning of the month, the blood will have already become irritated (thus carrying septic materials
that need to be cupped). In the end of the month, the blood will be idle, unlike the case in the middle and
last quarter of the month when the blood is agitated and sufficiently produced.
The author of Al-Qanoon said; Cupping is not preferred in the beginning of the month, because the bodys
various conditions will not be agitated then, nor is it preferred in the end of the month, because by then
the conditions would have decreased. Cupping is preferred in the middle of the month when the
substances (of the constitution or condition) accumulate and become agitated. It was reported that the
Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said: "Cupping and puncturing the veins are your best
remedies".
This Hadith is directed at the people of Hijaaz and warm areas in general, for their blood is delicate and
circulates closer to the surface of the skin, while the pores on their skin are wide and their strength is
weakened (i.e., during summer). Puncturing the veins is harmful for them. Puncturing of each of the veins
usually has a special benefit. For instance, puncturing of the basilica vein (the large vein running on the
inner side of the upper arm) is useful against the heat of the liver and spleen and various blood-related
tumours in these two organs. It is in addition useful for tumours of the lungs (emphysema), arterial
pulsation, pleurisy and all blood-related diseases of veins in the lower part of the knee to the hip.
Furthermore, puncturing of the median vein helps against the various swellings that appear throughout the
entire body, especially when the swelling is blood-related, and contains spoiled blood in general. In
addition, puncturing of the arms vein helps against the ailments in the head and neck that result from
excessive amounts of blood or from septic blood. Puncturing of the jugular vein helps against the ailments
of the spleen, asthma, thoracic cavity and forehead pain.
Cupping the upper section of the back helps against the aches of the shoulder and the throat. Further,
cupping the two posterior jugular veins helps against the ailments of the head, face, teeth, ears, eyes, nose
and throat, if these ailments were caused by excessive presence of blood, soiled blood or both.
Anas Radi Allaho Anh said: "The Messenger of Allah sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam. used to apply Hijamah
(wet cupping) on Akhda'ain (the two posterior jugular veins) and KAHIL (the upper part of the back). [Abu
Dawood, Al-Tirmizi, Ibn Majah, Abmad and Al -Hakim].
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam. used to apply Hijamah (wet cupping) on three areas, his
upper back area and the two posterior jugular veins". [Bukhari and Muslim].
It is narrated in the Sahih that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam used Hijamah (wet cupping)
on his head when he was in a state of lhram due to a headache.
In addition, Abu Dawood narrated that Jabir Radi Allaho Anh said that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho
Alaihe Wasallam used Hijamah (wet cupping) on his hip because of a debilitation he suffered from.
Narrated by Ibn Majah, on the authority of Ali Radi Allaho Anh that angel JIBREEL advised Prophet
Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam for Hijamah at Akhda'ain (posterior jugulars) and KAHIL (upper
back ~ between the shoulders).
Cupping on the lower part of the chest helps against spots, sores and mange on the thigh. It also helps
against gout, haemorrhoids, elephantiasis and itchiness on the back.
There are several Ahadeeth that state that Hijamah breaks the Fast. The only Hadith that appears to
contradict this ruling is the Hadith that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam had cupping while
fasting. In this case, for the Hadith to mean that cupping does not break the Fast, it should satisfy one of
the following four conditions:
First, Fasting should have been obligated by the time the incident in the Hadith [narrated by Al-Khalil
above] occurred. Second, it should be proven that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam was not
traveling [when he had cupping]. Third, that our beloved Prophet sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam. was not
suffering from an illness that warranted cupping. Fourth; that this Hadith came after our beloved Prophet
sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam. said, "Those having cupping and those who do it have both broken their fast".
If these four conditions are satisfied, only then we can say that cupping does not break the fast, relying on
the Hadith that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe wasallam took Hijamah when he was fasting.
Otherwise, the Fast mentioned in the Hadith might have been a voluntary fast that too is allowed to break
when cupping is warranted. Or it could have occurred during Ramadan but while the Prophet was
traveling. Or the Hadith might be talking about a compulsory Fast during Ramadan but that it was
necessary to have cupping due to an illness. Or, cupping could dove been done during Ramadan and
without a necessity that warrants it, but before our beloved Prophet sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam. issued his
statement that cupping breaks the Fast of those involved in it. There is no proof that any of the four
conditions we mentioned above wore satisfied, so how about all four of them?
In addition, the Hadith proves that one is allowed to hire a doctor for a certain purpose and then pay him
for his services without a service contract.
The Hadith (that our beloved Prophet sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam. paid the person who performed cupping
for him) indicates that some people are allowed to make Hijamah (wet cupping) their profession. Prophet
Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam gave the man who performed cupping some money and that
person spent that money on his necessities.
Finally, the Hadith proves that one is allowed to collect reasonable taxes from his slave and that the slave is
allowed to use whatever is left after paying the tax. Otherwise, if the master is going to take all the money
anyway, it will not be called a tax any more. Therefore, whatever is left with the slave beyond the required
tax is his property and he can do whatever he wishes with it.
TEMPREMENT CHART
NUTRITION
"Stomach is the Haudh (tank) of human's body, with which all the arteries & veins are attached, when
the stomach is healthy, the veins & arteries transfer the health to the entire body, and if the stomach is
sick, the veins & arteries spread disease in the body." HADITH
Zaid bin Aslam once said, "Umar Radi Allaho Anh once made a patient observe such a strict diet that he
used to suck on date stones". In short, diet is one of the most beneficial / preventive measures before
and after the disease strikes, in which case diet will prevent the disease from spreading or progressing.
HADITH
Hadith, Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said:" When Allah loves a slave, He Saves him
from (the lust & love) of this Dunya, just as one of you restricts his patient on a special diet from food and
drink".
Al-Musnad (by Imam Ahmad) narrated that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said :The son
of Adam never fills a vessel worse than his stomach. The son of Adam only needs a few bites that would
sustain him, but if he insists, one third should be reserved for his food, another third for his drink and the
last third for his breathing.
Nutrition involves a balanced diet of carbohydrates, protein, fats, fibre, minerals and vitamins., which is
basically a meal consisting of meat, vegetables and a form of carbohydrates such as potatoes, rice or pasta.
Fruit is also an essential part of gaining a good healthy diet and nutrients.
Physical ailments attack and harm the body and alter its normal functions, because of an excess amount of
a substance. This type constitutes the majority of diseases and occurs, because of overeating or consuming
more than what the body needs, which brings about little benefit or is not digested easily, or due to
complex meals. When we habitually fill our stomach with these types of foods, we will end up with various
types of diseases, some of which take a long time to heal. On the other hand, when one consumes
moderate amounts of food and eats sensibly, the body will get the maximum benefit from this diet, as
opposed to when one overeats.
WATER, is an element that is important within a healthy diet.. Water acts as a carrier for nutrients to flow
, hydrates the body, and cleanses the body.
OXYGEN, is another element that is also important to health. Basically the air we breathe and the
atmospheres we live in. Pollution in the air can affect our health, like chemicals and smoke and fumes.
Good foods are fresh foods, wholesome. Dont under estimate the value of these elements; Herbs, Spices,
Nuts, Seeds, Beans, Vinegar, Lemon juice , Olive / coconut oil, and Honey. All these contain vital sources of
goodness, vitamins and minerals, and cures for many, many ailments.
"The heat of the fever is a breath of the Hell Fire; cool it with water.HADITH.
Eat of the good things which We have provided for you. (Quran 2:172) Eat of what is lawful and
wholesome on the earth. (Quran 2:168)
O mankind! Eat of that which is lawful and Tayyib (Pure and Wholesome), and follow not the footsteps
of Shaitn(Satan).Verily, he is to you an open enemy
(Surah: Al-Baqarah, Verse: 168)
If Somebody takes seven ajwa dates in the morning, neither magic nor poison will hurt him that day.
[Sahih Bukhari, Book #71, Hadith #664 (also 663, 672)]
As regards to the Zaytun tree, Allah (Taala) says: And a tree that grows on mount Saini which provides
oil and enjoyment for those who eat it [23:20]
Indeed, Allah Ta'ala has mentioned the Olive tree as being blessed as well; "a blessed Tree, an Olive,
neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil is well-nigh luminous.." [surah 24: 35]
bn Umar recorded the well-known hadith use olive oil and anoint yourself with it, because it is from a
blessed tree(24:35) [al-Bayhaqi]
It is recorded that the Prophet said Every kind of olive oil is for you, and anoint yourself with it.. [ibn alJuzi].
The Prophet used to recommend olives and saffron in cases of pleurisy, and he used to say that olives are
the medicine of the poor.
In another tradition Muhammad said Eat olive oil and anoint yourself with it [at-Tirmidhi].
Saied al-Ansari narrates that the Prophet said, "Eat the olive oil and massage it over your bodies since it is
a blessed tree."[at-Tirmidhi, ibn Maja]
Abu Hurairah RadiAllahu Ta'ala anhu narrates that the Prophet stated, "Eat the olive oil and apply it
(locally), since there is cure for seventy diseases in it, one of them is Leprosy."
[abu Naim] Mentioned by the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) " Hold on to the use of the black seed for
indeed it has a remedy for every disease except death"
And thy Lord taught the bee to build its cells in hills, on trees and in (mens) habitations. there
emerges from their bellies a drink, varying in colours, in which there is a healing for people. Verily in this
is a Sign for those who give thought.[Soorah Nahl: 68-69].
Also, the Messenger (Sallallaahu alayhi Wasallam) said, There is a cure in three substances,
a drink of honey [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (5356)].
Sahih Bukhari we read that the Prophet, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, said: Honey is
a remedy for every illness and the Quran is a remedy for all illness of the mind, therefore I recommend to
you both remedies, the Quran and honey.
Honey offers incredible antiseptic, antioxidant and immune boosting properties for our body and health. It
not only fights infection and helps tissue healing but also helps reduce inflammation and is often used for
treating digestive problems such as indigestion, stomach ulcers and gastroenteritis.
He created cattle that give you warmth, benefits and food to eat. (Quran l6:5)
It is He who subdued the seas, from which you eat fresh fish. (Quran 16:l4)
It is He who sends down water from the sky with which He brings up corn, olives, dates and grapes and
other fruit. (Quran 16:11)
In cattle too you have a worthy lesson. We give you to drink of that which is in their bellies, between
the undigested food and blood: pure milk, a pleasant beverage for those who drink it. (Quran l6:66)
There emerges from their bellies a drink, varying in colours, in which there is healing for people. Indeed
in that is a sign for a people who give thought. . (Quran 16:69)
And it is He Who produces gardens trellised and untrellised, and date palms, and crops of different
shape and taste (its fruits and its seeds) and olives, and pomegranates, similar (in kind) and different (in
taste). Eat of their fruit when they ripen... (Quran 6:141)
and from it (the earth) we produced grain for their sustenance. (Quran 36:33)
The list of foods and drink are numerous in The Quran and also there are forbidden foods mentioned
Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead animals - cattle-beast not slaughtered, blood, the flesh of swine,
and the meat of that which has been slaughtered as a sacrifice for other than God... (Quran 5:3) ...and
intoxicants. (Quran 5:91-92)
While sweets and junk food are not forbidden they must be eaten sparingly as part of a balanced diet,
designed to maintain optimum health. Many of the most common chronic illnesses today derive from
unhealthy eating habits. Coronary heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, obesity and depression have all
been linked to inadequate diets. The traditions of Prophet Muhammad, sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam., praise
moderation as a way of maintaining good health and the Quran stresses the need to strike a balance
between any extremes.
True believers need healthy bodies and minds in order to worship Allah in the correct way. To maintain a
sound mind, a pure heart and a healthy body special attention must be paid to health. The heart and the
mind are nourished by remembrance of Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala, and worship performed in a lawful way,
and the body is nourished by partaking of the good and lawful food Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala has provided.
Attention to diet and nutrition is a part of the holistic health system inherent in Islam.
A BALANCED DIET
Breakfast ; cereal, or fruit, with orange juice or water
Dinner ; Freshly steamed or boiled vegetables with grilled or cooked meat / oily fish, with potatoes or rice
Tea ; Salad with nuts, seeds, and fruit
Super ; VERY SMALL MORSALS, AND FRESH AIR
FUEL TO PERFORM DAILY ACTIVITIES
Every single act performed by your body no matter how small or mundane the task may seem uses
energy.
Proteins, fats and carbohydrates in food all contribute to the total energy pool of the body. But for the
body to be able to use and conserve this energy, it also needs certain vitamins and minerals, which can be
obtained from foods and, to a lesser extent, supplements.
A diet deficient in foods that supply energy, and the necessary vitamins and minerals to make this energy
available, can lead to serious health problems, not to speak of starvation.
By ensuring proper energy, vitamin and mineral intake by means of the foods you eat, you'll provide your
body with the necessary fuel needed to do all the tasks required to maintain life.
These include the production and maintenance of body tissues, the electrical conduction of nerve activity,
the mechanical work of muscle effort, and heat production to maintain body temperature, among other
functions.
NUTRIENTS FOR THE BODY'S CELLS
The body functions by means of a very intricate set of systems that work in perfect synchronisation to
make life possible.
All these systems, for example the cardiovascular, reproductive and respiratory systems, can be broken
down to cellular level where hormones, enzymes and neurotransmitters are constantly interacting through
complex processes to make your body function.
These processes are all made possible by the nutrients that we ingest every day. While certain nutrients
can be produced by the body itself, we need to get many others through the food we eat.
A diet deficient in vital nutrients will soon lead to disease. By eating foods from a variety of different
sources both animal-based and plant-based you will provide your body with the essential nutrients
without which its cells cannot function.
GROWTH AND REPAIR OF TISSUE
Just as builders need special materials to renovate a home, your body demands certain nutrients for its
"construction zone": the growth and repair of tissue.
Good nutrition has the advantage that it ensures growth (during childhood and pregnancy), healing and
the maintenance and build-up of muscle mass. For these essential processes to take place, the body needs
energy, certain vitamins and minerals, but especially protein on a daily basis.
Protein (which also supplies 17 kilojoules of energy per gram) can be obtained primarily from animal
products such as meat, eggs and milk. Most plant foods are relatively poor in protein, with the exception of
legumes and beans.
Although the western diet generally incorporates enough protein, vegetarians may be getting too little of
this vital nutrient. If you're a vegetarian, it is important that you make a point of including protein-rich
foods in your diet. The advantage is that, should you suffer an injury, your body will be ready and able to
repair the damaged tissue. You will also be able to maintain your muscle mass and increase it when you
exercise.
REINFORCING THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
You can enable your body to fight disease more effectively with the foods you eat.
You probably already know that the vitamin C in oranges helps to ward off infection. This vitamin boosts
immunity by increasing the production of B- and T-cells and other white blood cells, including those that
destroy foreign microorganisms.
In a similar way, other foods and nutrients can play an immune-boosting role.
The key is to optimise your intake of plant-based foods, such as fruit, vegetables, grains, nuts and legumes.
Including more omega-3 fatty acids in your diet by eating more fish, while cutting down on your intake of
saturated fat, is also important.
Probiotics (microbial foods or supplements that can re-establish the intestinal flora in your gastrointestinal
tract) also seem to kick-start the immune system. Up your probiotic intake by eating more low-fat or fatfree yoghurt made with live AB cultures.
HEALING FOODS
Regarding the Prophetic medicine, plants that we call herbs, and plants that produce spices are not to be
underestimated. They have a powerful effect and healing properties as well as nutritional values. These are
what make up the art of Herbalism.
Essential oils are produced, extracted from these sources of foods, (herbs and spices ), and are used in
tinctures and for massage purposes.
Fruits and vegetables are a delight to hold and smell, and provide much comfort and nutrition. Each one
has its cure just like the herbs and spices. We can include here the dates, figs, raisins, currents, prunes,
which are from the same family as much prized fruits of healing. I must mention here too, apples and
oranges which are common and underestimated too for their high healing qualities.
Seeds, nuts and beans, are all great too. They have qualities and values for a simple diet but very efficient
and nutritious.
Fat is also needed in our diet to process the protein intake from meats, nuts and dairy products. The best
oil is of course olive oil, but to is, coconut oil which is free from cholesterol. Butter is better than
margarine, it is more purer.
Oily fish, such as sardines, mackerel, salmon being the best, and kippers, are full of protein and are very
good for the skin.
Garlic, onion, honey, black pepper, lemon juice, salt and sugar, are all used on a daily basis in most healthy
households, and are all good healing foods with much powerful healing properties. Sugar though in a very
small quantity is good for the brain function. The best salt is Pink Himalayan salt.
Lemon juice is a wondrous liquid that can be used in so many ways. For the skin, hair, teeth, cleaning
objects, as an antiseptic, anti-bacterial, and soother.
Basically, eat all natural and fresh foods in moderation. All have healing properties and much goodness and
blessings with Bismillah pronounced on them.
All types of cures and medicines contain either a certain diet or preventive measures, when one feels ill, he
will need to rid the body from harmful substances and bodily wastes. These three elements are what
medicine is all about.
There are two types of diet, a diet from what might bring an illness and a diet from what might intensify
the illness. The first type of diet is for the healthy and the second type is for those with an illness. When
the patient observes a certain diet, the illness will not progress and thus the powers contained in the body
will cooperate and collaborate towards ridding the body of the ailment.
The most basic element regarding the diet is what Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala- said: And if you are ill or on a
journey, or one of you comes after answering the call of nature, or you have been in contact with women
(by sexual relations) and you find no water, perform Tayammum with clean earth (soil) ~ (Mai'dah : 43)
Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala- Has Saved the sick person from using water; when there is a chance that it might
harm him.
Ibn Majah narrated that Umm Al-Munthir bint Qays said, The Messenger of Allah sallallahu 'alaihi wa
sallam.- came along with Ali Bin Abi Talib Radi Allaho Anh, who was then recovering from an illness. At that
time, we had some hanging clusters of dates. The Messenger of Allah Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam started
eating from them and then Ali Radi Allaho Anh joined him. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu 'alaihi wa
sallam. kept saying to Ali; "you are still recovering", until Ali stopped eating. I then made some barley and
chard (beetroot) and brought it to them. Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said to Ali, "Eat
from this food, it is more beneficial for you".
In another narration, our beloved Prophet said, Eat from this food for it is more suitable in your
condition. [Abu Dawood, Ahmad and Al-Hakim].
Ibn Majah narrated that Suhayb Radi Allaho Anh said, "I came by the Messenger of Allah sallallahu 'alaihi
wa sallam. and found that there were some dates and bread in front of him. Prophet Muhammad
Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said, "Come closer and eat. I picked up some dates and started eating from
them. Then Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said, "Do you eat dates while you are
suffering from conjunctivitis (an inflammation of the covering membrane of the eye)"? I said, O
Messenger of Allah, I am chewing on the other side. The Messenger of Allah then smiled." [Tirmzi and AlHakim].
In another Hadith, Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said: "When Allah loves a slave, He
Saves him from (the lust & love) of this Dunya, just as one of you restricts his patient on a special diet
from food and drink"
The famous statement that "Diet is the top medicine" and the stomach is the home of disease; give each
person what he is used to [of food and medicine]; this is not a Hadith, according to the scholars of Hadith.
Rather, it is the words of Al-Harith bin Kaladah, the renowned Arab doctor. But there is another Hadith
which states : "Stomach is the Haudh (tank) of human's body, with which all the arteries & veins are
attached, when the stomach is healthy, the veins & arteries transfer the health to the entire body, and if
the stomach is sick, the veins & arteries spread disease in the body."
Al-Harith stated that, Diet is the head of medicine. To doctors, observing a diet by healthy people is as
harmful as unhealthy eating habits for patients. Consequently, the best type of diet is that observed by
those recovering from an illness, because until then, their body organs would not have regained their
normal strength and wellbeing. In this condition, the digestion process would not be at its normal
efficiency while the various organs of the body would still be prone to sickness. At this time, unhealthy
eating habits might cause the disease to come back stronger than it was before.
You should understand now that Prophets disallowing Ali from eating the hanging clusters of dates while
still recuperating from an illness is one of the best preventive measures. Fruits are not beneficial for sick or
recovering patients as they get digested quickly at a time when the body is still fighting the ailment and is
not strong enough to deal with an excess amount of food. Ripe dates in particular are heavy on the
stomach at a time when the body is still resisting the ailment and removing its effects. Whatever part of
the ailment that remains would either dissipate or re-intensify, depending on the condition of the body.
Therefore, when cooked barley and beetroot were brought to Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe
Wasallam, he ordered Ali Radi Allaho Anh to eat from it. Cooked barley and beetroot represent one of the
best types of foods for the recovering patients and those with weak stomachs. It does not produce any
harmful substances or bodily wastes. The water of cooked barley is cool and nourishing, along with its
other qualities of soothing, relaxing the bowels and strengthening the body in general, especially when it is
cooked with beetroot.
Zaid bin Aslam once said, "Umar Radi Allaho Anh once made a patient observe such a strict diet that he
used to suck on date stones". In short, diet is one of the most beneficial / preventive measures before and
after the disease strikes, in which case diet will prevent the disease from spreading or progressing.
We should know that when healthy, recovering or sick people have a taste for a type of food or drink, it
would not harm if one consumes little amounts of it. Rather, the food might even help and benefit the
body, as the stomach will accept and easily digest the food, more so than when one takes a medicine that
it detests. This is why Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam allowed Suhaib Radi Allaho Anh to
eat few dates when he was suffering from conjunctivitis, since it was just a little and would not harm him.
It was reported that Ali Radi Allaho said that he once came to Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe
Wasallam, when he (Ali) was complaining from conjunctivitis, and he found the beloved Prophet eating
dates. Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam asked him, "O Ali, do you have a taste for dates"?
He then threw a date and then another date to Ali Radi Allaho Anh, until he threw seven. Prophet
Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam then said, "That is enough, O Ali". [Narrated by Abu Naim in his
book on Prophetic medicine].
In addition, Ibn Majah narrated that Ibn Abbas Radi Allaho Anh said: "Once, Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho
Alaihe Wasallam visited a sick person and asked him, "What do you have a taste for?" The man said, I
have a taste for wheat bread, or I have a taste for a cake." Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam
then said: "Whoever has wheat bread, let him send some to his brother." He in addition said, "When your
sick have a taste for something, give them some of it."
The last Hadith contains a secret, because when the sick person eats what he has a taste for while hungry,
it will be less harmful than what he does not have a taste for. If what he has a taste for is not beneficial in
his condition, then his preference for it will prevent its harm. In addition, eating what one does not like will
cause harm to the patient even if the substance is beneficial itself In general, the type of food that is tasty
and that the person likes will be accepted by the body and will be digested in the best way, especially when
the appetite for it is strong.
This is one of the major pillars and the most beneficial parts of the science of medicine. When the doctor
errs in prescribing the correct medicine, the patient will be harmed while the doctor is thinking that he is
benefiting him. Only the most ignorant doctors will fail to recognize the importance of using the most
favourable types of foods and medicines that are the most suitable for different patients. For instance, the
Bedouins neither benefit from Nenuphar (Nilofar ~ similar to carrot and used as a drink) or rose-syrup, nor
do these remedies have any effect on them, nor would the majority of the medicines used in villages and
cities have much effect on them. This fact is known through experience and observation.
Those who read through this book will find that the Prophetic medicine and remedies are all suitable and
favourable to the sick person and what he is accustomed to of food and medicine. We have stated that this
is a pillar of Medical Science, as the best medical authorities concur. For instance, the renowned Arab
doctor, Al--Harith bin Kaladah, said, "Diet is the best cure; and the stomach is the residence of ailment and
give each body what it is accustomed to (of food and medicine)". In another statement, Al-Harith said,
"Azm is a cure", meaning hunger. In fact, going on a diet is a better cure for plethoric illnesses (having an
excess of blood in the body and therefore looking reddish), except when there is a fear that the condition
would flare up with septic accumulation and aggravate the illness.
Al-Harith stated that stomach is the residence of the disease. The stomach is a curved organ that looks like
a gourd and consists of three layers of delicate and neural components called fibres and surrounded by
flesh. The fibres of one layer are arranged longitudinally, while the second layer fibres are horizontal and
the third slanting. The tip of the stomach has more nerves, while the bottom has more flesh and its interior
is coated and fuzzy. The stomach is located in the middle of the abdomen, leaning more to the right side,
created in this shape by the Wisdom of the All-Wise Creator. The stomach is indeed the residence of the
ailment; it is the centre of digestion and maturing process of all foods and drinks. After that, the digested
food descends to the liver and the intestines. Meanwhile, excess amounts of partially digested substances;
that the stomach was not able to completely digest remain, either because the amount of nourishment
was excessive, spoiled, or were not consumed in the proper order, or all of these reasons. Some of this
excrement remains in the stomach and the body is not able to completely discard them, and this is why the
stomach is the residence of ailments. Al-Harith indicates the importance of eating less food and preventing
the heart from fulfilling its desires.
As for ones being accustomed (to certain things and foods), it is a part of the human nature. Habit has
such a great influence on the person and on his body, that if we conduct an experiment on several people
who have the same characteristics, the result will vary considerably. For instance, we present the example
of three young, hot-tempered men, one of them is used to eating hot foods, second is used to cold foods,
while the third man is accustomed to mild foods. When the first person eats honey, it would not harm him,
unlike the second person, while the third person would be slightly bothered. Habit, therefore, is an
important basis on which preserving the health and healing ailments relies. That is why Prophet
Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said that each person should be treated according to what he is
accustomed to of medicine and food.
Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam never mixed fish and milk, milk and sour foods or two hot
dishes, or two cold dishes, two sticky dishes, two constipating dishes, two laxative dishes, two heavy
dishes, two liquid foods or two types of foods that produced the same condition. Furthermore, he did not
join between two types of foods that caused opposite effects, such as constipating and diarrhoea, or easily
digested with heavy foods, broiled with cooked foods, dry with fresh foods, eggs & milk or meat & milk. He
neither ate a food when it was too hot, nor old food that was heated for him the next day. Furthermore, he
did not eat any salty or rotten food such as pickles. All these types of foods are harmful and cause the
health to change for the worst.
Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam used to neutralize the harm of foods by their opposites, as
much as he could, When the food was hot, he neutralized its effect with a cold food, & if it was dry, he
neutralized it with wet foods, such as eating ripe dates with cucumbers & dried dates with butter. He used
to drink the water of soaked dates (Nabeez) to neutralize the effect of heavy foods.
Narrated by Tirmizi & Ibn Majah, that Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam used to take dinner even if it
only consisted of a few dates & he said "Skipping the dinner would make you old".
Abu Nuaim mentioned that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam used to discourage sleeping
immediately after eating the food because it hardens the heart. Doctors advise the people to walk even a
few steps after dinner, because sleeping just after dinner is very harmful. Muslim doctors add that one
should pray after eating his dinner, so that the food resides in the bottom of the stomach where it will be
easily digested.
Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam did not drink water or milk with his food, because the
drink would spoil the food, especially when the water is hot or cold.
It is not preferred that one drinks water after sports activity, when tired, after sexual intercourse, before
and after eating food and after eating fruit. It is not advisable that one drinks water after taking a bath and
after sleeping. All these activities will harm the health and one should not think about the benefits he
might gain from drinking with the food, it is nothing but a mistake.
EXERCISE
The age old adage of exercise is also an underestimated factor in health. It is something we take for
granted and think we are achieving this without much effort. But if we devise a program each day for at
least half an hour and try to work up a sweat doing it, it will bring about much added benefits.
We need to work our bodies to a degree to keep it flexible, keep the blood circulation flowing, to enable
strong bones, to stave off fat reserves / tissues, and to aid digestion. These are just some of the benefits of
exercise. There are many more , like inducing softer skin, and combating the process of aging, and just
generally feeling well, happy and relaxed. Exercise can also stave of illnesses and disease, it acts as a
preventive measure, as with nutrition, Hijama, massage, fasting, and all the good deeds as afore
mentioned.
This diagram is just an example of the types of exercises we could do on a daily basis, or during each week.
Of courses you could join a gym, and perhaps enlist the help of a personal trainer, which most gyms have.
Exercises is about just raising the heart rate level up, having a bit of a sweat out, and remember to have
fun whilst doing it.
But even if it is a walk, or just moving around a lot, this is classed as exercise too. Being stagnant, sitting on
the sofa, day after day will take its toll, and can cause many silly minor disorders, that if you exercised by
just moving, would relive such minor problems.
Prophet Muhammad sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam. advised his followers, to work, to be energetic, and to
start their day early, all of which are conditions for a healthy body. He said O God, make the early
morning hours blessed for my nation.
Obesity or an inadequate diet, laziness and weakness are all afflictions for which we will be called to
account.
Prophet Muhammad sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam, said, Any action without the remembrance of God is
either a diversion or heedlessness excepting four acts: Walking from target to target [during archery
practice], training a horse, playing with ones family, and learning to swim.
Respected Islamic scholar Imam Ibnul-Qayyem stated that movement helped the body get rid of waste
food in a very normal way and strengthened the bodys immune system. He also stated that each bodily
organ has its own sport (or movement) that suited it and that horse riding, archery, wrestling and racing,
were sports that benefitted the whole body.
In a narration recorded by Imam Bukhari Ra'hmatullahi 'alaihi (a scholar who compiled Prophetic
Traditions) it states that The Prophet sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam. passed by some people from the tribe of
Aslam while they were competing in archery (in the market). He said to them, Shoot children of Ishmael
(Prophet) your father was a skilled marksman. Shoot and I am with so and so. One of the two teams
therein stopped shooting. The Prophet asked, why do not you shoot? They answered, How could we
shoot while you are with them (the other team). He then said, Shoot and I am with you all.
In another tradition Prophet Muhammads sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam. beloved wife Aisha radiallahu ta ala
mauha, mentions their love of games and sports. She said, I raced with the Prophet and I beat him.
Later when I had put on some weight, we raced again and he won. Then he said, this cancels that
(referring to the previous race).
A true believer recognises the wonder of the human body and is grateful to the Creator. This gratitude is
shown in the care and attention given to maintaining optimum health. Islams holistic approach to health
covers all aspects of the mind, body and soul. A truly health conscious person blends diet, nutrition and
exercise with the remembrance of God and an intention to fulfil all their religious obligations.
MASSAGE
This is a complementary and added bonus to a health regime. It is not essential to include it in this
complete program of health as structured here, but it is one form of health that, if taken once a month can
conclude to an all-round health and wellbeing experience. Massage has many health benefits, and brings
about revitalisation and relaxation. It feels wonderful on the body and is closely connected to exercise,
nutrition and Hijama. It is not a miracle cure but a benefit and a preventative method.
CONCLUSION
Here we have seen good deeds and complementary deeds working together to provide a rounded and
complete health and wellbeing structure to everyday life. The good deeds need to be performed daily no
matter what, as a course of good practice and Islamic lifestyle, as a Muslim, and to take care of our
afterlife, which is the goal at the end of the day. The expression I like ti use is this, Life is a preparation for
death.
As you will see now too, is that the bad deeds, bad emotions, can destroy a persons health, and bring
them far from the sight of Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala'- and lose their Iman in extreme cases. But we should
not overlook the other reasons for the afflictions that come our way. For the bad deeds committed; we are
served our recompense and given the chance to remove the bad deeds / sins, and come closer to Allah
Sub'hanu wa ta'ala'- again. By finding the cure, the repentance, and correcting ourselves, we improve
ourselves, and eventually, inshaAllah be cured.
We are all tested in one way or another, be it by hardships, disasters, calamities or illness, by family or
property. So we should take all as a blessing and never feel further away from Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala'.
For Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala' wishes us to learn and strive, with patience and perseverance. Never give up ,
or lose hope, have trust and complete reliance in Allah Sub'hanu wa ta'ala'. For surely this is what is
needed, to go back to the roots of life itself, our Creator. For our Creator provided us with everything,
absolutely everything in life that we need.
HOW TO IMPLEMENT ALL GOOD DEEDS AND COMPLEMENTRY DEEDS INTO A DAILY
ROUTINE
MORNING /FAJA
Salat, duas, Istikarah, zikr, listen or recite Quran., have a healthy small breakfast, or fast on Mondays and
Thursdays, go for a walk, shopping and put your loose change in a charity box. Go to the gym or swim, or
exercise of other sorts suitable to what you like.
DINNER / DHURH
Salat, eat a healthy small meal.
AFTERNOON / ASR
Salat
TEATIME / MAGRIB
Salat, eat a small healthy meal,
ISHA
Salat, duas, read or listen to Quran
BEFORE SLEEP
Eat a handful or small portion of food, go outside and get some fresh air. Then do zikr and duas.
Fundamentally, not much has to change in your daily routine to add such good deeds and complementary
health deeds. It only takes a matter of ten minutes extra, which we can all find. As for implementing
exercise this requires a set routine of at least three times per week for at least an hour to be most
beneficial and productive. Best time for exercise is first thing in the morning.
Fasting can be done to begin with on Mondays and Thursdays. Then you could progress to every other day.
This of course is dependent on your state of health. But as it is health improves for the sick if they fast. So
be cautious and sensible.
Massage can be once a month, Hijama for preventative measures, just once a year. If for medical reasons,
usually a set program for once every month for several months.
Zakat / sadaqah should be done each day, if you are sick and at least once a week as a course of wellbeing.
Ruqah can be incorporated with hijama sessions, but it is advisable to do it every day for protection. It is
basically just reciting various Quranic verses daily.
Istikarah is suggested as a matter of asking Allahs permission and guidance for everyday things and
decisions. Just a polite and thoughtfulBOOKS
