IMPLEMENTATION
IntroductiontoLesson

Beginbyaskingstudentsiftheyhavenoticedthemoonatnight.Followbyaskingiftheyhavenoticedthatitlooks
differenteachnight.Sometimesthemoonlookslikeacompletecircleandsometimesitlookslikeitisnowheretobe
found.Thewaythemoonchangeseachnightiscalledphases.Thephasesoccurbecausetheearthandthemoonare
bothmovingconstantly.Showvideothatbrieflyshowsthechildrenthephasesofthemoonbeforewebegin.

TeacherInput

Thestudentswillnumberoffandbebesplitintothreegroups.Theclassroomwillhavethreestationstoday.The
stationswillinclude,aflipbook,anactivityatthesmartboardandaninteractivegameontheipads.

GuidedPractice

Oncethestudentshavebeennumberedoffintothreegroupstheywillgototheirdesignatedstations.Onceattheir
stations,theteacherswillgivethemdirectionsonwhattodo.

Inthefirststation,eachstudentwillreceiveastripofpaperandfolditintoeightsections.Theywillthenlabeleach
square:Fullmoon,Gibbousmoon,Halfmoon,Crescentmoon,Gibbousmoon,Halfmoon,Crescentmoon,andNew
moon.
Studentswillthendraweachphaseofthemoonintheirrightfulsectionusingmarkers,crayonsandpencils.Theteacher
willbedrawingthephasesofthemoonontheboardaswellforstudentstofollowalongiftheyneedhelp.Thefullmoon
iscompletelylitupsotheywillcolorintheentirecircle.TheGibbousmoonisthenextone,itis3/4litontheleftsideso
theywillcolorthatportionofthecircle.Thehalfmoonishalflitupontheleftside.Thecrescentmoononlyhadabout1/4
litupontheleftsidesotheywillcolorthatsmallpiece.Explainhowthemovementintheearthandthemoonmakethe
secondhalfofthephaseslightupontherightside.Thenthestudentswillcreatethosephases.Thelastphaseisthe
newmoon,seeifstudentscanfigurethisoneoutontheirown.

Inthesecondstation,thestudentswillgouptotheSmartBoardwiththeirgroupsandassisteachotherinlabelsthe
eightphasesofthemoon.Thiswillbecompletedbydraggingthenameofthephasetothepictureofthephase.
Hopefullyeachstudentwillgettopickonephasetomatch,butsomemayneedassistance.Thisiswhytheyareputinto
groups.

Inthethirdstation,studentswillbeworkingindependentlyonipadswithtwointeractivegamescalled"MoonMatch"
and"SpaceCadet."Thefirstgameallowsstudentstolabelthephasesofthemoonnumericallybydraggingtheir
picturesandtheirnamesintheappropriatelocations.Thesecondgameasksthestudentsquestionsabouteachphase
ofthemoon.Eachtimetheygetaquestionright,theirrocketshipgetsalittleclosertothemoon.Oncetheyhave
answeredallthequestionscorrectly,theywillhavelandedonthemoon.

IndependentPractice

Thestudentshavebeensplitupintothreegroups.Theywillbeworkingtogetherandindependentlyatstationstoday.
Theteacherwillbewalkingaround,monitoringtheirprogressthroughouttheclass.

DifferentiatedInstruction

Havethestripsofpaperalreadyfoldedsothestudentsdonothavetomakethesectionsthemselvesorhavethe
sectionsalreadymarkedsotheyknowwheretomakethefolds.Havethesectionsalreadylabeledforthestudentsthat
arenotasadvancedinthewritingfield.

Closure

Haveeachchildreturntotheirseatandhaveastickynotewaitingontheirdeskwhentheyreturn.Havethestudents
writethenameofonephaseofthemoonanddrawthecorrespondingpcituretothatphase.Oncetheycompletethis
activity,theywillbeabletostickitonthedoorastheyexitclass.
