Process:
Movement II
Learner Objectives/Goals: Balance through dynamic and sensitivity to soloists, stylistic
contrast between slow and half-time sections, articulation in second movement.
Play through oboe/trumpet solo, go back to measure three and work with
accompaniment, tone quality and intonation are key. Patience is the next most
important part. Sensitivity to the soloist
Hair-pin dynamics in woodwind entrance, flutes and saxophone
Third clarinet, brass take melody, take charge!
Focus on call-response sections, brass vs. winds, matching dynamics and intensity
Sudden tempo change, have students familiarize themselves with new tempo
Woodwinds with beginning half-time melody, light articulation, air release, matching.

Movement I
Learner Objectives/Goals: Balance through dynamic and sensitivity to soloists.
Introduction: Decrescendo, lightness in articulation, particularly in higher woodwind
voices
Exposition: Soloists unison articulation, sensitivity to volume. When brass joins in
at the fortissimo crescendo, striking contrast. Make sure winds are not clipping
notes, air release always.
Lyrical Section: Dynamic contrasts, hair pins give the section direction, exaggerate
from p<f Build chords, check intonation for accompaniment
6/8 section, woodwind completely unison in articulation, tone, and balance. Make
sure woodwinds do not overpower brass, brass has the moving line.
Emphasize importance of matching articulation for brass, in general as much
space as possible between notes.
Closure:
Play through movements I and II.

Assessment: Students will be constantly assessed through live performance of sections within their
music
Extension: Students begin working on movement three.
