Sunlight and Moonlight

(2013-2016)
For 10-String Guitar (Modern Tuning)

Julian Bertino (b. 1991)

Harmonics are generally notated at pitch. In case of discrepancy, follow the string number and fret
number indication instead.
The material is intended to be improvisatory and free, so the Rhythms and Dynamics in the score are
intended to be interpreted with a large amount of artistic license. Improvisation is encouraged.

I first wrote Sunlight with changing time signatures each measure and later removed them- I was
improvising rhythmically so much when performing it that I became afraid that they would be
interpreted literally by other performers, removing the "magic" of the piece.
I had a deadline to have it finished, and I was improvising most of my compositions at the time. I was in
a dark room with an open window that had no sunlight coming in through it, since it was facing the
north. I was stressing out because I wasn't able to improvise anything worth keeping that day. Just then,
the sun reflected off of a window in another building for a perfect moment in which it came through my
window, and I heard the opening melody to Sunlight.
Two years later, I performed it at my sister's wedding, and recieved many compliments on it, so I
dedicated the recently updated version to her and her husband.
The time was right for its companion movement, Moonlight, to be composed. I felt like there was a lot
more I could say within the confines of a short, lyrical movement, so I created a second based on similar
themes, and similar mode but with a contrasting mood. I found my inspiration walking down the Ottawa
streets under a full moon, remembering the fingerstyle steel string solo pieces of Don Ross and
Laurence Juber.
