2nd Observation _X_

Your well-structured lesson on Gerrymandering engaged the students.

To achieve your objectives, you used appropriate teaching strategies,
learning experiences, and instructional materials. Within your Prezi
presentation, you introduced 3 key terms and elaborated on them with a
video and other concrete examples. After showing the class a 7-district
model, you asked 2 groups to redistrict it in favor of the Republican party
and 2 to rearrange it in favor of the Democratic party. Then,
spokespersons from each group presented their changed districts. You
demonstrated how district boundaries had changed on a map of Wisconsin
from 2012 to 2013. Last of all, students filled out exit slips regarding the
fairness of Gerrymandering and possible ways to improve the process of
redistricting. Your lesson appealed to visual, auditory, kinesthetic and
social learners.

Your effective management strategies promoted cooperation and
purposeful learning. Your natural, friendly manner made the ninth graders
feel comfortable. You greeted the students and asked them about their
weekend. You joked with the class, Im Mr. Rogaczewski, and you are on
candid camera. Because you kept the students actively involved, they
were attentive and well-behaved throughout the whole period.
You organized and managed the resources of activities, attention, and
time to engage the class in productive tasks. Your Prezi and hands-on

each small group, everyone contributed their ideas during the redistricting
activity. Group representatives shared their results with the whole class.
All students completed and turned in their 2-question exit slips.
The strength of your communication skills varied. You encouraged
student thinking and analysis with skillful questioning, What does this
mean for the Republicans?... Did you use packing or cracking in any
way?... Why did you decide to include an Independent in District 2?
However, the students needed more explanation and guided practice to
better understand the purpose and process of gerrymandering before
tackling the group activity.

Your lesson on Gerrymandering was successful in a number of ways.
Your plan was well-designed and flowed smoothly from each part to the
next. You accomplished almost everything that you had hoped to. You
thought that you could have talked more about the importance of
redistricting in a fair way. Also, it might have been beneficial for the class
to figure out which political party would be represented for each district in
your example before having to do it in their own groups. And it would give
them a model to improve on.
You assessed student understanding in a variety of ways. You collected
information from individual answers, group conversations and
presentations. You also gained insights from their exit slip responses. As
a result, you felt that overall the students had grasped the basic concept in
your lesson.
