This Weeks Scope

The Choice
Bible Story: The Choice (Samuel anoints David) 1 Samuel 16:1-13
Bottom Line: Honor others by giving them a chance.
Memory Verse: Love one another deeply. Honor others more than yourselves. Romans 12:10, NIrV
Life App: Honorletting someone know you see how valuable they really are.
Basic Truth: I should treat others the way I want to be treated.

Welcome Time
Welcome kids and spend time engaging in conversation and catching up. Get ready to experience
todays story.
Before kids arrive, pray for each regular attendee by name. Pray for those who might visit your group
for the first time. Pray specifically for kids who are typically overlooked by others. Pray that they would
be made to feel special and valued. Also pray for kids who are typically doing the overlooking. Ask
God to show them other kids who need to feel valued. Pray that these kids would work to make others
feel included and special.
What You Need: playdoh, paper, crayons or markers
What You Do:
Tell kids you are going to give them a chance to decide how they want to use their time before
Large Group.
Their options are: play with playdoh, draw a picture, play Tic-Tac-Toe with a friend, make a
paper airplane (without throwing it at anyone else), etc. If you have other supplies and ideas
available, feel free to offer those as options as well.
What You Say:
Sometimes its nice when someone gives you a chance to be the one in charge, isnt it? [Transition]
Today in Large Group, we are going to hear about someone who was given a chance to be in
charge.
Lead your group to the Large Group area.

Activity #1
What You Need: I Give You the Honor Cards Activity Pages
What You Do:
Show kids the stack of cards and a couple of the actions on the cards.
Tell them theyll get to [Bottom Line] honor others by giving them a chance to do one of the
actions on the cards.
Ask if anyone would like to go first and then choose a volunteer from the raised hands.
Let your first volunteer choose a card from the stack. He can then choose someone to give the
honor of completing that card.
When the chosen kid has completed the card, she keeps it and chooses another card and
another kid to honor. (If you run out of cards, shuffle and re-use them.)
Encourage kids to always pick someone who hasnt been picked yet.
What You Say:
When each of you picked a card, you had a chance to honor someone else by letting them complete
the card. It was honoring to other people because you were passing on the attention to them and giving
them a chance to shine. How did it make you feel to be chosen? (Let kids respond. Tell them its okay
to be nervous when getting chosen and when doing the choosing yourself.) We should always try to
[Bottom Line] honor others by giving them a chance in all we do.

Activity #2
What You Need: Beautiful Words Activity Pages; 1 for each kid, markers
What You Do:
Look up the verse together, using the Bible navigation tips below.
Finding verses with 1st graders: Guide children to open the Bibles to the marked page. Point to the word Romans at the
top of the page as you say Romans aloud. Then guide children to find the big number 12 on the page. Explain that this is
the chapter number. Finally, guide them to look under the big 12 for the little 10; this is the verse number. Tell them to
leave their finger on the verse as you read the verse aloud. Then lead everyone to say the verse together.
Finding verses with 2nd and 3rd graders: Guide them to open their Bibles to the front and find the table of contents.
(Hold up a Bible opened to the table of contents to show the kids what the page looks like.) When the kids find the table of
contents, lead them to find Romans in the list under New Testament. You can help by telling them that Romans starts
with the letters R-O. When the kids find Romans, lead them to look at the page number beside the word. Explain that the
number tells them on what page they can find Romans. Help the kids find the page. When they find Romans, explain that
the big numbers on the page are the chapter numbers. Help them find chapter 12. Explain that the small numbers are
verse numbers. Help them find verse 10 in chapter 12.

Say the verse together as a group several times.

Hand out Activity Pages and markers.
Let the students color the pages.

What You Say:

This verse tells us that when we love others, we should honor them. One way to do that is to [Bottom
Line] honor others by giving them a chance. Giving someone a chance means letting them do
something that we would usually do ourselves instead. Its good to give people a chance even when we
dont think they will be good at something or when we think we could do it better ourselves. You could
let your friend have a turn setting up the video game before you play together. Or you could let a little
brother or sister turn the TV on and choose a show to watch when you know itll take them a really long
time because theyre little! Giving people a chance honors them by showing them they deserve to try.
When we honor others, we show them that we care about them and that we love them.

Pray and Dismiss

What You Need: Paper, pen
What You Do:
Ask kids what they would like to pray about this week. Ask questions to guide them to think
about what to pray in response to what they learned today.
o What did we learn about honoring other people this week?
o Who did we learn we should honor?
o How can we pray about that to God?
o Who do we want His help to try to honor this week?
Write down kids responses to your questions and incorporate them into your prayer.
What You Say:
God, please help us to [Bottom Line] honor others by giving them a chance. We ask that You
would [insert kids responses to your questions]. Thank You for loving us enough to give each of us a
chance. Amen.
