Kylie Jenner and her fascination and

moreover, appropriation of traditionally
Black cultural staples, including protective

as Boxer Braids,is featured in this

has been an open critique of this instance of
appropriation, saying, When u appropriate
black features and culture but fail to use ur
position of power to help black Americans
by directing attention towards ur wigs
instead of police brutality or racism.

KLOSS AND THE HEADDRESS

Take the case of Victoria Secret Supermodel

Karlie Kloss, 20, who in 2012 walked the
runway at the 69th Regiment Armory in the
Native American-style outfit, complete with a
headdress. After the fashion show aired there
was backlash from Native Americans who said
they were misrepresented. The Native American
headdresses date back to the ancient heritage
of various tribes, and their meaning should not
be defiled by those that choose to wear them for
trends. Adopting traditional garb of a culture and
reclaiming it as a fashion accessory degrades the
integrity of that culture.

APPROPRIATION
IN MUSIC
The rap industry can be tied to
a cultural connection, a genre of
music that was used as a voice to
express the needs and truths of the
disenfranchised. This music was often
the thrown under fire because of its
explicit content but the argument
stood that rap was an expressive
form of beat poetry. New and
upcoming artists like Macklemore
and Iggy Azalea have rebranded rap
into a pop and culturally-detached
medium.

CULTURAL APPROPRIATION SEMINOLE TRIBE

SEMINOLE APPROPRIATION

The picture on the right is a demonstration

against the misusing of traditional Native
American symbolism as a racist depiction of
history and custom. The left shows what is being
fought against; a picture where a sports fan is
donning red face and wearing a mock of the
Seminole face paint and headcoverings. The
heard of the argument lies in the fact that a
group of people that have customs and special
community relationships do not want to be
reduced to an overgeneralized depiction of their
own culture. Calling a person a mascot is what
has fueled the push to change appropriated
names, like the Redskins Football team. People
that are against the change site history of the
football team as the reasoning behind their
resistance to comply with those that are from the
Tribe but perserving the history of the Tribe in a
way that is culturally appropriate should be more
of a priority, especially given the history and
context of the nation

FLORIDA STATE
APPRORIATION
The Florida State Seminoles.
Problematic? Some would argue
a resounding yes: sporting a
headdress on the way to a football
game and chanting, Scalp Em
as part of the game day jargon is
troubling for some. Others see it
as a simple representation of the
Seminole tribe, almost a tribute to
their culture and tradition through
a mock up version.
Florida State has called
themselves the Seminoles
since 1947, and allowed FSU
to use Chief Osceola as the
official mascot, rather than the
characterature, Sammy Seminole,
who sported appropriative redface
and a wig. Some called this hostile
and abusive. Others would call it a

commemoration.
In order to further
compensate the
Seminole Tribe, the
University gives
out scholarships
to students of
Seminole decent,
although it has
been recorded
that only eight
Seminole
students have
graduated. So
the question is,
should FSU
adopt a less
culturally
insenstive
mascot? *Yes.
