Thetermstatusquoantebellum(oftenshortenedtostatusquoante)isaLatinphrasemeaning"thestateexisting
beforethewar".[1]
Thetermwasoriginallyusedintreatiestorefertothewithdrawalofenemytroopsandtherestorationofprewar
leadership.Whenusedassuch,itmeansthatnosidegainsorlosesterritoryoreconomicandpoliticalrights.This
contrastswithutipossidetis,whereeachsideretainswhateverterritoryandotherpropertyitholdsattheendofthe
war.
Thetermhasbeengeneralizedtoformthephrasesstatusquoandstatusquoante.Outsidethiscontext,theterm
antebellumis,intheUnitedStates,usuallyassociatedwiththeperiodbeforetheAmericanCivilWar,whilein
EuropeandelsewherewiththeperiodbeforeWorldWarI.

theKargildistrictofJammu&KashmirandelsewherealongtheLineofControl(LoC).Thewarstartedwiththe
infiltrationofPakistanisoldiersandarmedinsurgentsintopositionsontheIndiansideoftheLoC.Aftertwo
monthsoffighting,theIndianmilitaryregainedthemajorityofthepositionsontheIndianside,andthePakistani
forceswithdrewtotheirpeacetimepositions.Thewarendedwithnoterritorialchangesoneitherside.[6]
