pH Bolus by Smaxtec

The Smaxtex bolus measures pH in the rumen, in real-time.

Benefits

When to use?
To improve overall farm management,
Smaxtec advises placing around two
and three boluses per group of cows.
For a deep insight into rations, five
boluses per group is recommended.

Improve feed intake

Optimise feed efficiency

Improve herd health

Prevention of SARA

Improved yields

How it works?
Measuring 132 x 35 mm, the bolus is inserted using a normal bolus gun. Once activated, the bolus needs
calibrated only once with the ID number of the cow.
The Smaxtec bolus sits in the reticulum and measures rumen pH and temperature every 10 minutes.
The bolus has a guaranteed precise measurement for 50 days, covering the transition period.
Transmitters which pick up the information can be fixed around the farm. When boluses come into range of a
transmitter data is transferred to the server.
This information can then be accessed via a computer.
Another method of gathering the data is to use a mobile reader. This will detect the boluses within 10 meters.
Data is stored on the reader and downloaded when connected to a computer.

Cost (to be confirmed)

SmaXtec boluses are offered on a fee
per cow per month basis.
This is expected to be around 4-6 per
cow a month.

Optimal pH range
The optimal range for pH is between 5.8-6.2, with a naturally
occurring small daily variants of up to 0.5pH. If pH drops below 5.5,
this is regarded as critical.
