Introduction
In the recent years, the number of people installing smart devices in their homes are
increasing. Smart device is an electronic device connected to other devices or network via
Bluetooth, Internet, 3G, etc.., that reduces human effort by automating the way we usually do
things. Such as, turning on/off the lights, opening/closing the doors can be controlled by using
your mobile phones connected to the smart device that control the lights, doors, etc.., in your
homes.
The number of things getting connected to the Internet are prevailing, this rise us to the era
of Internet of Things, where everyday objects are connected to the internet and can be remotely
accessed from anywhere, provided that you are connected to the internet. These smart devices
allow us to access or monitor our home, even when we are far away.
Due to the technological advancement of smart devices, a doorbell that captures an image
of the person outside when it is pressed, then sends an email notification to the owner showing the
captured image, is now in the market. Another great smart device is called a smart lock, a smart
lock allows the home owner to lock or unlock their doors over the internet using their mobile
phones, eliminating the hassle of using keys. And it also lets the owner to give access to their
family, visiting relatives, or friends even when they are not at home. As a result of these smart
devices we envision a device that integrates both the capability of the smart doorbell and the smart
lock.

Statement of the Problem

Smart devices are expensive, not everyone could afford it and not everywhere in our
country have free internet access. You need to subscribe from telecommunications companies to
have internet access on your phone, which makes getting smart devices for our home inessential.

Objective of the Study

1. General Objective
The aim of this study is to develop a low cost smart device that can be used to monitor and
access remotely the front door of home owners.

2. Specific Objectives
a) To integrate both the capability of a smart doorbell to monitor the front door of
houses and the capability of a smart lock to unlock and lock doors into one device.
b) To utilize the use of free data provided by telecom companies as a means for
connecting to the IoT server
c) To make use of the Facebook Messenger Application as our application platform
for controlling the smart devices

Importance of the Study

This project will help people in the Philippines to access and monitor their homes without
the need to purchase costly service from companies that provides installation of smart homes. With
the use of free data and Facebook Messenger people can remotely access and monitor their home
anywhere they go. This will notify them when someone came by their house and they are not at
home.

Definition of Terms
Internet of Things (IoT) - is a computing concept that describes a future where everyday physical
objects will be connected to the Internet and be able to identify themselves to other devices.
Smart Device - is an electronic device, generally connected to other devices or networks via
different protocols such as Bluetooth, NFC, WiFi, 3G, etc., that can operate to some extent
interactively and autonomously.

Scope and Delimitations of the study

This project is for people who are usually away from their house. It will let them monitor
who stopped by their house when they are not around. And it will also let them give access to their
family and friends when they are not around. For the device to work the home owner must have
internet access that the smart device will be connected.

Conceptual Framework

The user sends a lock/unlock door command to the Facebook Messenger Bot that is
connected to IoT Server that was setup on the Raspberry Pi. The Raspberry Pi then receives the
command from the Facebook Messenger Bot and then performs the command requested. The
Facebook Messenger Bot then respond to the user notifying them that the command request of
locking or unlocking of the door has been successful.

When someone rings the doorbell the Raspberry Pi triggers the camera to capture an image.
The image is then sent to the user through the Facebook Messenger Bot. this notifies the user that
someone is outside their door and give them an image of the person outside.

The Ring Video Doorbell lets you answer the door from anywhere using your smartphone. It
features an HD camera with night vision, providing a clear view from your front door, day and
night. A built-in rechargeable battery lets you install the doorbell anywhere, or connect it to
existing doorbell wiring. Motion-triggered alerts sent via the free Ring app notify you of arriving
guests and deliveries. The ring Video Doorbell cost $199 and needs to be installed outside the
door.

August Doorbell Cam is another smart doorbell that gives you a live video feed of your doorstep on your
mobile device. The August Doorbell Cam also cost the same as the Ring Video Doorbell and also to be
installed outside your door.

These eye-catching devices needs to be installed outside the door, someone could easily steal these
expensive smart devices. Also none of the mentioned devices has the capability of doing both
controlling the door locks and monitoring. These smart devices uses their own application platform
that needs to installed in your mobile phone and also have access to internet connectivity.
