Davis: Forgot to Dance with
the Date that Brought Him
Back in the day, Blacks dressed up in their Sunday best to exercise their newfound freedom to
vote. Back in the day, Blacks welcomed casting their ballots for a candidate that looked like them
and, they assumed, thought like them. Back in the day, Blacks could be counted on to create
a sizable voting bloc, first for the party of Abraham Lincoln, and later for the party of Barack
Obama.
Today there is no nostalgic looking back.
Today, in the so-called post racial climate that elected President Obama by an unprecedented
coalition, Black voters are more seasoned and sophisticated about party politics, polling data
and voting strategies that better serve their self interest. Today Black voters are less likely to
vote based simply on the candidate’s skin color. Today Black voters can no longer be taken for
granted, not even by Black candidates.
Just look to the Alabama gubernatorial race. In the Democratic primary, a White democrat
handily defeated – 62 to 38 percent – a Black democrat because the former did not take Black
votes for granted, unlike the latter.
U.S. Rep. Artur Davis of Birmingham, 42, lost his historic bid to become the first Black
governor of Alabama to State Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks, 57, on June 2 because the
congressman forgot an essential lesson of survival taught by our elders, to dance with the date
that brought you.
By all published accounts, Mr. Davis discounted this wise counsel. He reportedly spent
more time leading up to the democratic primary courting independent voters using conservative
rhetoric about financial and constitutional reform, while ignoring Black party leaders in
anticipation of the general election in Alabama. He assumed Black support once he won the
primary. But at least one report states that Mr. Davis did not even seek support from critical
Black powerbrokers across the state before deciding to bid for the governorship. And they
endorsed his White competitor. Granted, Mr. Sparks campaigned on a state lottery popular even among Black voters.
Mr. Davis’ eight-year right-of-center congressional voting record was called most into Granted, Alabama is a Bible Belt blue state where all but one of the last six governors has been
question during his latest campaign by his constituents who could not understand why he was the a Democratic. However, those factors still provide little political cover for Mr. Davis’ apparent
only member of the Congressional Black Caucus to vote against health care reform legislation. proclivity to disconnect from and discount the needs of his home base.
His egregious rejection was made more curious by the fact that he represents a state and a district Herein lies the lesson for all aspiring politicians seeking support from Black voters. Color of
with some of the worst health care statistics in the nation. skin alone no longer cuts it for the congregation. Just ask Artur Davis.
