Part II

English-speaking students of German will soon notice that German word order differs greatly
from the w o r d order used in English sentences. When working through this grammar you will
learn that four general rules apply to the position of almost all verbs you are likely to use in
German. It will help you to master German word order if you try to recognize which rule of
verb position is operating and the reason for it.
The sequence of adverbs and phrases differs from English. In general the sequence of thought
in German is usually: (1) time, (2) manner, and (3) place:
Ich habe sie heute glcklicherweise im Hotel antreffen knnen.
It is, however, always possible to begin a sentence with a phrase or an adverb:
Glcklicherweise habe ich sie heute im Hotel getroffen./Luckily I met her in the hotel today.
I General rules
1. Sentences are made up of certain units: subject, predicate, objects, adverbials etc.
2. These units are arranged according to a certain w o r d order in all languages.
3. The German sentence is determined by the position of the conjugated verb: this is
the verb form with an inflected ending, e. g. ich gehe, du gehst.
4. The position of the conjugated verb varies considerably depending on whether it is
in the main clause or in a subordinate clause.
5. The main clause is an independent, complete sentence. The conjugated verb always
occurs in position II.
6. The subject in the main clause can move from position I to position III (IV), i. e. it
moves around the conjugated verb (position II) as if this were an axis.
Notes
1. The position numbers I, II, III (IV) will be used from now on to illustrate the word
order in main clauses.
2. The transfer of the subject from position I to position III will be referred to as inversion from now on.
3. The distribution of all other items following the subject changes according to the
overall meaning, or to the context of the sentence. It is therefore not possible to
define a fixed sequence.
4. Negation: if the whole statement is to be negated, nicht should be placed as close
as possible to the end of the sentence, but in front of the second part of the verb. If
just one part of the sentence is to be negated, nicht is placed in front of the relevant
part.

The subject occurs in position I, followed by the conjugated verb in position II.
see a + b + c) In the present, imperfect and future (= present with temporal expres
sions, compare 21 preliminary note) the conjugated main verb occurs in
position II.
see d) The conjugated auxiliary verb occurs in position II in the perfect and past per
fect. The past participle of the main verb occurs in final position.
see e) Certain verbs are used with a dative or an accusative object or with both
(see 1 4 , l-lll).
When both objects occur in one sentence, the dative object usually appears before
the accusative object.

1. Inversion means that another item occurs in position I, the conjugated verb then
follows in position II and the subject in position III. Almost any other item can be
placed in position I.
2. The overall meaning of the sentence is hardly affected by inversion. Position I often
refers to a preceding statement and it emphasizes the progressive aspect of the
action:
Wir frhstcken immer um 8 Uhr. Heute haben wir verschlafen.
Einstein emigrierte nach Amerika. Dort konnte er weiterarbeiten.
Man stellte den Zeugen einige Mnner vor. Den Tter erkannte niemand.
Mein Fotoapparat ist nicht in Ordnung. Damit kannst du nichts anfangen.
see a + b + c) Only positions I and III change in inversion; otherwise the w o r d order
remains the same.
