Make a
covered button
Step 1
STITCH the design using two strands
of stranded cotton for the cross stitch,
and one strand for the backstitch, over
two threads of fabric on a 15x15cm
(6x6in) piece of 28 count evenweave.
Washing and pressing the fabric dry
before you start stitching will remove
some of the stiffening in the fabric,
allowing it to be bent around the button.
Accessorise this summer with a handstitched necklace. Take your pick from nine
designs to decorate covered buttons
Step 2
TRIM away the unstitched fabric
leaving a 5cm (2in) circle, with the
design in the centre.
Step 3
MAKE a row of running stitches around
the fabric edge, leaving long thread
ends. Wrap the fabric around a 3cm
(1 in) self-cover button and pull up the
threads to tighten. Knot the ends
together, then stitch them into the fabric
on the back of the button to secure.

PUSH the back onto the button,
making sure it is rmly up against the
fabric you can add a small amount of
fabric glue before attaching the back.
Step 5
THREAD a 92cm (36in) length of
leather-style cord through the hole at
the button back. Make two more
buttons and place on the cord, before
cutting it to the correct length.

making patterns lately, Ive
been thinking about the
challenge of creating designs
for our beloved stitch pixelation.
As you all know, cross stitch is
essentially a big collection of squares.
With the exception of quarter and
three-quarter stitches (and dont get
me started on French knots!) most
patterns are comprised of squares. As
a consequence, certain compromises
have to be made about creating
realism in cross stitch.
There are a few constraints with
patterns and they relate to size. In a
way were lucky because we can have a
pattern that is one inch wide that can

that is fairly recognisable, but without
ddling with the colours, is a pretty
sub-standard banana. The design has
714 stitches, something that could
probably be done in an evening.
At 14 count, the banana is looking
a bit less blocky and the colour is
settling down a bit, so its not bad, but
I still wouldnt want to put it in a bowl
with some custard. It now weighs in at
1361 stitches, so if you needed a cross
stitch banana in a hurry, this is a
reasonable compromise between
speed and design.
At the top end of the scale we have
the 24 count banana. This is pretty
realistic and wouldnt need much

cushion
Step 1
CUT your stitched cushion front
to the same size as your backing
fabric. With the stitching right-side
up, place the backing fabric on
top. Pin, then machine stitch, the
cushion front and the backing fabric
together with a 1.25cm (in) seam
allowance, but leaving a gap on one
side for turning.
Step 2
TURN to the right side. Insert the
cushion pad, and then sew up the
gap with small, neat stitches.

How to
make your clock
Step 1
TRIM your stitching larger than your
wooden hoop. Place the inner hoop
beneath the stitching and the outer
hoop on top. Centre and press over
your work. Pull taut and tighten
the screw.
Step 2
CHECK that your cardboard circle ts
inside the back of your hoop. Trim if
needed but take care to keep a nice,
tight t. Make a hole in the centre of
the cardboard, large enough for the
shaft of the mechanism to go through.
Place the cardboard into the back of
the hoop. Make a small hole in the
centre of your fabric with sharp
scissors this is marked on the chart
as a grey square. Make sure the hole in
the fabric lines up exactly with the hole
in the cardboard.
Step 3
USE glue or a glue gun to attach the
cardboard to the edges of the hoop.
Place the mechanism through both
layers and glue rmly to the cardboard.
Add the washer, nut and the clock
hands. Wrap the excess fabric at the
edges of the hoop over onto the back
of the cardboard. Use double-sided
tape to hold it in place.
Step 4
TIDY the back of your clock with a
circle of felt, from which you have cut
out the mechanism shape. Place on
the back of the clock, and then either
stitch to the aida at the edges, or glue
to the hoop.

complete with a mini paper clip coat

MAKE A COVERED BUTTON BOOKMARK
Use paper clips to tranform a stitched button into a bookmark with a dierence!
Step 1
Step 2
CHOOSE your self-covered buttons we used

ones with a diameter of 29mm. For this size
button, cut a template with a diameter of 5.5cm.
Draw around this on the reverse of your fabric,
centring the design, and cut out.
TAKE a double length of sewing cotton and an

embroidery needle. Use the cotton to work a
running stitch about 0.5cm in from the cut edge.
Dont trim the thread ends yet leave them free
as youll need them for gathering.
Step 3
Step 4
PLACE the button in the centre of the fabric, on

the reverse, and pull the sewing thread to gather
the fabric around the central button shank. Knot
the thread to secure. Press the button back to the
reverse to keep the fabric taut.
ATTACH the back of the button to a large paper

clip we used colour plastic coated clips for this
project. Our paper clip measures 5cm in length
and we used a dab of glue from a glue gun to
hold the paper clip in place.

MAKE A PAPER CLIP COAT HANGER
Use our mini dress stitched on plastic canvas and paper clip hanger to make a gift tag.
Step 1
Step 2
TAKE a metal paper clip. Start by bending the

outer end of the paper clip up at a 45 degree
angle. The paper clip used here measures about
2.75cm in length. This fits the dimensions of the
stitched dress perfectly.
BEND the curved end of the paper clip gently

up at a 45 degree angle to meet the other end,
as shown above. The other end of the hanger
will eventually go on to create the hook of the
coat hanger.
MAKE A PAPER CLIP BRACELET
Join together paper clips to form the base of this pretty oral accessory.
Step 1
Step 2
TRIM your fabric to t the width of the paper clip,

plus extra for hemming. Fold the sides of the
fabric to the reverse and iron in place.
CUT some iron-on interfacing to t and iron this

to the back of the fabric to secure the hemmed
sides in place.

STRAIGHTEN the curved end of the paper clip

gently. You may have to trim both ends of the
paper clip to make a more even shape. You can
use a small pair of wire cutters for this or a pair of
blunt scissors.
USE a pair of round nose pliers to gently create

the hook of the hanger. Trim the ends and
re-shape as explained in step 3. To attach the
dress to the hanger, simply oversew through the
back of your stitches and over the hanger.

Greetings from the
United States! I am
a cross stitcher and
blogger from
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; proud
home of the Liberty Bell, soft pretzels,
and also the oldest embroidery guild
in America.
As far as cross stitchers go, I am
pretty new to the craft, having started
about three years ago. As a busy
working mother, cross stitching turned
out to be the perfect hobby; highly
transportable and easy enough to pick
up in those few minutes that moms
everywhere find in between helping a
child decipher fractions and waiting for
dinner to come out of the oven.
I dont know about you, but when
I have a new interest, I want to tell
everyone about it. Unfortunately, my
friends and family did not share in this
obsession, so I started a blog! I figured
that Id be talking to myself there as well
(kind of like when I ask my kids to do
chores), but ended up discovering an
entire community of like-minded

people; talented stitchers, inspiring

pattern designers, young college
students, grandmothers, moms like me,
and the best part friends.
Blogs are pretty amazing things.
You log on and write about the random
topics that interest you (in this case,
cross stitching and bread baking and
my brilliant cat) and all of a sudden you
find people from all over the world who
enjoy the very same things.
I hear from readers in the US,
Europe, Australia and Asia who share a
passion for buying patterns that we will
probably never have time to stitch
(secret shame), obsessing over linens
and threads and finding the perfect
frame and worrying about our families
and what to feed them for dinner. Blogs
remind us that no matter where we are
in the world, we are similar in so many
ways. Especially when it comes to cross
stitchers and stash hoarding, we are
never truly alone!

Today I want to
tell you about
my membership in a needlecraft group.
Weve been together for three years
already and its not just some kind of
sisterhood, but a family. Every day we
chat on the internet and it does not
matter that we all live in different time
zones. We say our good mornings,
share news and, of course, discuss our
cross stitching projects!
Chatting on the internet is fine but it
is not enough for us. Girls try to meet
when they are going somewhere on
holiday or even on business trips.
Meeting in an airport or a railway
station with a cup of coffee, talking
about stitches and it will be an hour or
so to remember forever! For those who
live in or near Moscow, I organise
traditional seasonal events we spend
about five hours together stitching,
talking, taking pictures and having fun!
Such online (and sometimes oine)
communities help women to find new

friends, good company and inspiration,

as sometimes families and friends dont
find cross stitching interesting.
Although in most cases our dearest

I have been living
here since 2009,
and really got into
stitching when I stumbled across an
exhibition put on by the Kenya
Embroiderers Guild. I had dabbled
(very inexpertly, I now realise) with a
little bit of cross stitch when I was at
university, but then work and children
got in the way of stitching.
The Kenya Embroiderers Guild is
an enthusiastic bunch of stitchers.
We meet once a month, and learn a
new stitching technique each time.
We design and build a small kit for
members to practise the new

technique. We have put on several
exhibitions in conjunction with the
Kenya Quilt Guild my goodness, there
are some talented people here.
We have also been very lucky to
strike up a relationship with designer
Mary Hickmott, who has visited us four
times to teach us some masterclasses,
covering many different stitching styles.
Her last visit was in February this year,
and during her time here we covered
stump work, canvas work, beadwork,
appliqu and cut work. At our next
Guild meeting we will be revisiting
Hardanger and making a small
bookmark. This is to prepare members
for a two-day Hardanger workshop
we are offering soon, featuring an
amazing sampler designed by
Mary Hickmott.
I also belong to a lovely weekly
stitching group (although sometimes
we spend more time on the coffee and
cake than on the stitching). I have
mentioned several different
embroidery techniques here, but for
most of us, cross stitch is our first love
and we tend to bring our cross stitch
projects to stitch group.
I look forward to telling you more

about stitching life in Nairobi in the

Welcome to the life
of an expat stitcher
in Vietnam. From
Lancashire, UK to
Ho Chi Minh City,
Vietnam via Moscow, my stitching has
travelled with me. There is now an
extensive collection, over 300 projects,
stashed in the wardrobe of my spare
room ready for me to start.
I left sunny Lancashire 10 years ago
in August to teach in Moscow for a year.
I bought my threads from the kiosk at
the metro station, the only place that
stocked them. Whenever I visited home
a project would return, ready to be
stitched during the long winter nights.
Eight years ago I traded snow for sun
and the stitching came too. In the last

couple of years stitching has started to

become popular here. When you go to
the indoor markets, such as the famous
Ben Thanh, youll see the ladies on the
stalls stitching during the quiet times.
Although I can buy thread here, the
fabric choices are pretty limited 11 and
14 count aida.
Despite having to order most of my
supplies from overseas, then waiting
six weeks for them to arrive, depending
on customs, I wont be trading my early
morning stitching on my balcony with a
mug of Yorkshire tea anytime soon!
Now time to put the stitching away
(Lizzie Kates Three Little Words) and
head off to work on my scooter.
Mel has been stitching since she was
14 years old and is now 42. Shes taught
all over the world, and now lives and
works in Vietnam.

I remember when
I got my first ever
taste of cross
stitching. I was a
young girl, visiting the Readicut Mill

my hometown. Bet you didnt know that
my hometown was once famous for
pre-cut wool for rug making, did you?
It was quite the revolution in 1928, I can
tell you, complete with mail order. My
grandmother had taught me since a
young age to sew, bake, knit (I still cant
do this), crochet (ditto) and make latch
hook rugs. One day, raiding the bargain
bin at the factory shop, I came across a
complete cross stitch kit for a small
horse head picture, and I was hooked.
I completed the kit and begged my
grandmother for more, which she
gladly gave. I havent stopped since,
and at 35 this year, I have no intention
of doing so.
I have two young boys, and up until
January, when I decided to take a year
off to write full time after having
secured a fab Mills & Boon contract,
had worked six days a week teaching
adults about education and SEN while
raising my family. Cross stitching is my
therapy, my chill time. I can do it talking
on the phone, watching TV, even
reading, and I love every minute. There
are a few little grottos around here too,
fabulous little treasure troves of crafty
gems, and I also order online if I cant

get to the shops. I love the stitching
Facebook forums, where everyone
chats and shares tips and photos. Its a
community, and my grandmother and
I still swap tips and show each other
our work and its our special thing,
which I cherish. There is nothing quite
as satisfying as writing The End to a
book, or sending your finished labour
of love to the framers.

from me to say

Barcelona! My
name is Patricia
Veazey and I will be glad to share with
you my news and finds about crosss
stitching and stitchers from this corner
of the map.

I was thinking: have you noticed that

we stitchers can recognise each other
in minutes? Of course craft shops and
groups are the places to meet new
hobby fellows, but regardless of age
and as far as we speak the same
language, even in the most incredible
places stitchers are able to end up
sitting together to share the pictures of
their last project or even grab work out
of their handbag and make a private
trunk show.
When I sat down to write these
first words for CrossStitcher, it was
easy for me to imagine who is going to
read my words, and where. One of the
many things we have in common is
our love for beauty stitchers usually
have a lovely favourite place for the
hobby, cosy and warm or fresh with a
view, depending on where we live, but
its our very own paradise, surrounded
by everything we need for a relaxing
stitching session.
So, I hope to be able to share my bit
of sunny Spain with you, always
through a stitchers eyes.

Gday from
Australia! Even
though we are now
in our cooler months, it is still warm
enough to sit outside, have a barbie
(barbecue) and stitch. I love this time of
year when the autumn colours show
themselves its like nature is stitching
colour onto the landscape.
I live in Ipswich, which is about 15
miles from Brisbane in the sunshine
state of Queensland and we have a
vibrant and eclectic craft community,
ranging from quilters to lace makers to
cross stitchers, who practice their crafts
in every venue, from cosy cottages to
conference centres.
Currently my favourite place for all
things craft is the big haberdashery
shop Spotlight we have a brand new
store just down the road (just for me?),
as they have a large range of threads
and fabrics and stock lots of worldwide
brands and kits. I am also partial to craft
show shopping and am looking forward
to the next one in July you just never
know what you will come home with.

Once I bought a kit that I had been
looking for for ages and started
stitching it on the train going home.
A lady sat next to me and proceeded to
get her cross stitching out of exactly
the same kit and asked me to help
her start. By the time we got to her
station she had already done her first
ever stitches!

Step 1
FIND the centre of your fabric and work the
cross stitch in two strands of stranded cotton
and the backstitch in one strand this will be
your bag front.
Step 2
PLACE the stitched bag front and the bag
back right sides together, then stitch around
three sides with a 1.25cm (in) seam
allowance, leaving the top open. Trim the
seam allowance and clip the corners, then turn
to the right sides. Repeat for the lining, but
leave on the wrong side.

Step 3
FOR each handle you will need one piece of
Zweigart Brittney evenweave and one piece
of lining fabric. Turn the long edges on each
piece 1.25cm (in) over onto the wrong side
of the fabric. Press and then repeat for the
other handle.
Step 4
WITH wrong sides together, pin the two
pieces of fabric that form each handle
together and then machine stitch down both
long edges. Repeat for the other handle.
Step 5
PLACE the lining inside the bag, adding a
couple of pins to hold the layers together.
Carefully measure, and then position the
handles at the top of the bag, with the handle
ends down between the lining and the bag.
Pin and then tack around the bag top, before
machine stitching to hold the layers together.

COMPETITION WINNER!
Back in April we launched our reader competition
to design a bunting ag for the Queens 90th birthday.
Were delighted to reveal the winner here, together
with her lovely design for you to stitch
o celebrate the Queens 90th

birthday this June we asked
readers to design a bunting ag
to celebrate. Lots of you took
part, and we received some amazing
entries, making our job of picking the
winner incredibly difficult! After much
deliberation, we decided that this
modern bunting design by Carol
Smith just had to be the winner.
We loved the quirky style of the
design, and we are sure the Queen
would love it too!
Carol, well done, we thought you had
incorporated so many elements into
your design the daffodils, roses and
thistles, the cake, dates and happy
birthday bunting, plus a portrait of
the Queen, wearing a brilliant smile
and that all important hat!
Make a
bunting ag
Step 1
TRIM around your stitching leaving 2.5cm (1in)
outside the design area. Iron the extra fabric
over onto the reverse side of your stitching to
make a nice triangular shape you should have
a few blank aida squares outside your design.
Step 2
CUT a piece of white backing fabric slightly
larger than your ag, turn over the edges,
and then sew it to the back of the ag using
small, neat stitches.
Step 3
SNIP a length of cord or ribbon and
machine stitch it to the top of the ag.

How to
frame your
work in a hoop
Step 1
TRIM your stitching and a fabric piece

into a circle slightly larger than your
hoop. Place the inside hoop beneath the
two pieces and the outer hoop on top.
Centre and press over your work. Pull
taut and tighten the screw.

TURN your stitching to the reverse and

cut a piece of felt to t inside the inner
circle. Place the felt inside the hoop. You
can use a bit of fabric glue to keep it in
place. The felt will pad your stitching, and
stop anything showing through.

USE a glue gun or double-sided tape to

begin attaching the rst layer of fabric,
pulling taut as you go. Repeat for the
second layer. Cut a second felt layer to t
over the back of your hoop. Secure with
glue or small neat stitches.

Grace Whowell
Beyond Measure is the savvy stitchers go-to store. CrossStitcher

chatted to owner Grace Whowell about her first year in business

making, her favourite stitching gifts,
and how she started selling what she
simply calls beautiful things for folk
who make.
Did you grow up with your family in a

creative household?
As well as my parents, my aunt and

grandma, there were four siblings
plus me. My grandma and aunt were
usually knitting. My mum used to do
hand embroidery and lacemaking
I used to bead her lace bobbins for
her, and also tie fishing flies for my
dad. I dont think he ever caught
much with them, I just used to like
the feathers and lurex threads!

What sparked the idea to start

Beyond Measure?
I started using my grandmas old

Singer sewing machine when I was
about 10 years old and that was it!
Did you study anything creative?
I studied ceramics at college and

I loved working with clay. Ive also
dabbled in silversmithing but after
I graduated I decided to pursue a
career working in galleries. I did this
I was looking for some quality

sewing gifts for a birthday but
everything modern seemed to be
cheap, mass produced and a bit
kitsch. I wanted to be able to buy the
kind of thing you would find in old
sewing boxes, like wooden and
leather needle cases, proper scissors
and beautiful pin cushions.
Some small companies such as
Sajou in France and Merchant and
Mills were making such things again,
so my idea was to bring things
together in one beautiful site. I also
knew people who I could
commission to make exclusive
products so I started making plans.

What has the experience of running

your own business been like?
My work in galleries involved a retail

element and I developed lots of skills
along the way through working with
artists and customers. Internet retail
was a new world to me but luckily I
had a great web designer. When the
site went live in March 2015 and I got
my first order, it was very exciting!
I really like meeting customers face
to face at fairs and events. At the
first one I did (Leeds Wool Festival)
I took along some reading matter as
I thought I might be twiddling my
thumbs, but I never stopped all day!
You run the website from home how
do you fit it in with your daily life?
It can be a bit chaotic, especially as

my stock expands! We have a young
family so its great to have the
flexibility but sometimes it can be
hard to separate work and family
life. I think the next step will be to
move to business premises where
I can run the online side and store
my goods, so Im investigating some
of the fabulous mill premises nearby
in the Pennines.
Do you have a favourite product?
Its hard to choose but the turned

wooden pin cushions are rather
lovely. I work with an amazing
craftsman, Hugh Leishman. I make
the fabric cushions for them and
each is slightly different, so its a
labour of love. They sell out very
quickly and there is a waiting list
for the next batch, but people dont
seem to mind!
How do you find products?
I think about products that I would

like to use, or maybe a customer will
mention something that they would
like to buy but cant source easily.
With Eleonor Bostroms dogs, I saw
an image on social media and knew
I just had to have some! They are
shipped from the USA and I love
opening each parcel as each dog has
its own unique character.
Can you tell us a bit more about the
commissioning process?
I visit lots of craft events and fairs and

just get chatting to people. It might
be a particular design or use of a
material catches my eye, then I
approach the maker to discuss how

they might develop a product for me.
The first products I developed with
AWL have Beyond Measure etched
into the leather. When I first saw the
prototypes, it hit me that my
business idea had become a reality.
Its so exciting but a bit nerve
wracking as I know how much work
goes into making a sample.
You sell at lots of shows how has that
experience been?
Quite often customers bring along

things they are making or have made
using my goods and I love having a
chat. Ive learnt so much from them,
like how to card wool more quickly
for my pin cushions and how to
thread a needle easily (always thread
the end that comes off the reel first,
and knot the end that you have cut
its to do with the twist in the thread).
Ive got to know many other small
business owners, its hard not to part
with my own cash when I see their
wares, we all support each other!
What are your dreams for the future?
I look forward to creating more

exclusive products with makers and
designers. My business is still very
young and I am excited to see how
things develop. I often think about
how a Beyond Measure shop might
look and how I could expand my
range. I am happy to take things one
step at a time though; it may happen
when the time is right, we shall see!

Make a bag
Step 1
STITCH your design then make a
template for the bag. Lay tracing
paper over your design, then use
pins to mark out the design area on
your paper. Using a ruler and pencil,
add 6cm (2in) to the top of the
stitching and 3cm (1in) to the
bottom and sides, rounding the
bottom corners to match the shape
of the ark.
Step 2
USE the template you have made to
cut out the bag front, making sure
the design is central. Cut the bag
back and two lining pieces using the
same template. Pin the two bag ap
pieces right sides together, and then
cut so that the upper edge of the ap
is narrower than the bottom edge,
by about 2cm (in).
Step 3
SEW the ap pieces together, with a
2.5cm (in) seam allowance, leaving
the bottom edge open. Trim the seam
allowance, clip the points, then turn
through to the right side and press.

PLACE the bag front and back
right sides together. Sew around the

seam allowance, leaving the top
open. Trim the seam allowance and
clip the curves. Repeat with the
lining pieces. Clip the curves, but
keep on the wrong side.
Step 5
TURN over the top of the bag
1.25cm (in) to the wrong side,
repeat with the lining, press. Place
the lining inside the bag. Put the raw
edge of the ap centrally between
the fabric bag and lining on the bag
back. Put the ends of the cotton
webbing between the layers over
the side seams.
Step 6
MACHINE stitch around the top of
the bag, just down from the top
edge, to hold all the layers together.

MAKE a padded animal to go
with your ark by cross stitching your
chosen animal following the chart and
key, and then placing it face down on
your backing fabric.
Step 2
MACHINE stitch around the edge,
following the outline of your animal,
but leaving the bottom open.
Step 3
CUT away some of the seam
allowance, turn to the right side, then
stuff and sew up the bottom edge
with neat stitches.
If your ark or animals need a clean after theyve been

played with, hand wash in cold water with a small amount
of mild detergent. Rinse thoroughly and let them air dry

STITCH your design and then using the

template supplied with your frame, cut your
purse front so that the design is central. Use
the same template to cut a purse back, two
purse linings and two from the wadding.
Step 2
POSITION the purse front and back
right sides together and place between the
two pieces of wadding. Stitch around the
lower edge of the purse, between the two
points marked on the template, using a
1.25cm (in) seam allowance.
Step 3
CLIP the seam, starting and nishing just
below the marked points. Sew the lining fabric
pieces together in the same way, but leave an
opening at the bottom for turning the purse
later in the construction. Clip the seams.
Step 4
TURN the lining right-side out and then slip
inside the purse. Pin the top edge, making
sure the side seams match exactly.
Step 5
WORK from the centre of one opening edge.
Sew the layers together and when you reach
the side seam, stop with your needle down,
then manoeuvre the fabric so that you can
continue on the other side without breaking
the seam. Clip the seams.
Step 6
This design was stitched on 25 count evenweave over two threads of fabric.
PULL the lining out of the purse, and then

push the purse through the hole left at the
bottom of the lining, turning to the right side,
then slip stitch the lining closed.

How to frame a picture

CUT a piece of white mount board

to t inside your frame. Place your
design centrally over the mount
board and pin the fabric around the
board to secure, starting at the centre
of each side and working outwards.
PIN around the entire perimeter

and check you are happy with the
positioning of your design, then turn
over to the reverse. Use double-sided
tape to secure the fabric excess
around all four sides.
SECURE the fabric edges with

masking tape and remove the pins.
Position your stitching in the frame
and back with a second piece of
mount board. Seal the edges with
more masking tape to nish off.

CLOUDS
Add atmosphere to your sky by
stitching clouds using hues of light
blue, grey, white and cream. Contrast
medium tones with dark and light to
create added dimension.
FLOWERS
Make loose French knots for the
owers to give them a more circular
appearance. As you complete the
French knots, simply adjust the
tension of your stranded cotton to
allow some slack to remain.
CORN
For corn on the
stalk, complete a
series of yellow
French knots, then
make a few long
stitches on either
side of the French
knots for the husk.
CHICKENS
Tan Chicken
Use a natural colour for the beak
and legs (or match colours to a real
life chicken). For a lightly marbled
brown colour, combine one or two
light brown or tan coloured strands
of stranded cotton with one lighter
strand. The difference in colours
should be very subtle, as this will
create the look of lighter feathers
peeking through the darker ones.
Use a French knot for the eye, and
backstitch for the markings and legs.
Brown Chicken
For a Rhode Island Red type of
chicken, use different shades of
similar brown in dark, medium
and light shades. You could add a
few stitches between the colour
changes, using a blend of two shades.
This will merge the colour changes
together, without a stark step in
colour. Use a French knot for the
eyes, and then backstitch for the
wing and leg markings.
White Chicken
Make the wing of the white chicken
stand out by using grey coloured
stranded cotton. If you feel the
chicken is dicult to see against light
fabric, try using one strand of light

grey stranded cotton to outline.
You could also try a combination of
colours for the cross stitch, mixing
white with grey or cream. Use yellow
or grey for the legs, and grey for the
wing markings.
Black and White Chicken
To create very small stripes of
black and white, like on a Barred
Plymouth Rock chicken, stitch the
entire chicken in a combination of
stranded colours try two black
with one white, one black, one
white, and one medium grey.
TOP TIP
For a more defined look, try creating
the wing shape by working each
stitch with the top-left to bottom-right
below; and top-right to bottom-left
above, doing the opposite on the
rest of the chicken.

Add the bee-keeper's head to
the farmer's body, so that he
is wearing his protective hat.
Use a single strand of light
grey stranded cotton to make
backstitches on top of his face,
to create a sheer fabric covering
to protect him from the bees.
HAY BALES
Try completing the bales of hay
in various shades of tan to give
the effect of hay. Use randomly
placed backstitches around the
edges and throughout the bale
to create loose pieces of hay.

For basic stitching youll need a tapestry needle

that has a blunt tip and large eye. Use a size 24
needle for most aidas, and a size 26 for evenweaves
and linens. Use a sharp embroidery needle for
ner details such as backstitch and French knots.
Embroidery thread is also called stranded cotton.

Each thread length is made up of six strands of
cotton twisted together. The chart key will tell you
how many strands youll need to stitch with.
Aida is an ideal choice for cross stitch beginners.

14 count is the most common, although its
available in a huge variety of colours and counts.
Each cross stitch is worked over a single aida
block, making counting and keeping your place
a cinch.
Evenweave is much simpler to work with
than you might think. Start with a 25 or 28 count
evenweave, such as Zweigart Lugana. Once
youre condent, try your hand at a linen version.
EMBROIDERYSCISSORS
Embroidery scissors are an absolute must-have.

Keep yours sharp by only using them to cut threads .
HOOPSANDFRAMES
Though not absolutely essential, we do

recommend using an embroidery hoop or frame
to keep an even stitching tension.

sampler each time as you add to your design youll start to see

CUT a 40cm thread length, and thread

your needle with two of the six strands.
Knot one end and start with a waste
knot (opposite). Make a diagonal half
cross stitch across a single aida block.
MAKE a second diagonal stitch to make

the cross. You can work a row of half
cross stitches first, then work back on
yourself to complete the stitches. All the
top stitches should face the same way.

add neat knots to your designs

KNOT one end of your thread and take it

down through the front of your fabric, 2cm
from your starting point.Bring it back up to
the front of the fabric to make your first
stitch. Begin stitching your design, making
sure you stitch over your starting thread
with each stitch. Once youre happy that
your starting thread is secure, snip off the
knot. To secure your thread when youve
finished stitching, weave it through the
back of your stitches.
WORKING in two strands makes a loop

knot the neatest method. Cut a single
length of thread, twice as long as normal.
Fold in half to create a loop at one end.
Thread your needle with the two tail ends.
Bring your needle up to the front of your
fabric, leaving a small loop of thread on the
reverse. Make a half cross stitch, passing
your needle through the loop on the
reverse, as shown. Pull all the way to secure
the thread then continue with your stitching.
ADDING BACKSTITCH OUTLINES & DETAILS
BRING your needle up at your starting

point and wrap your thread once or twice
around the needle. Use one strand for a
small knot and two for a chunkier knot.
Hold your thread end firmly and take your
needle down, ever so slightly away from
where you came up. Slide the twisted
thread down the needle, so it rests on the
fabrics surface, and gently feed the
needle through the fabric.

WORK your backstitch once youve finished

the cross stitch. To secure your thread,
weave it through the back of your stitches,
then bring your needle up to the surface.
MAKE each backstitch over one thread of

fabric on aida and two threads if you work
on evenweave. Follow the chart to see
where to place each one.
KEEP your thread as taut as possible to

prevent the knot becoming loose. Gently
pull your thread through to tighten the
knot, so that it sits neatly on the surface.
