Introduction

HBK Contracting Company W.L.L. is one

the of the biggest and oldest construction
companies in Qatar. In 1970 the company
was initiated by sheikh Hamad Bin Khalid
Al-Thani as a respond to the need of the
state of Qatar to undertake civil
construction projects. Since that the company had made huge economic
contributions to the state and its government. Nowadays the son of the founder
himself sheikh Ali Bin Hamad Al-Thani is the president of not only HBK
Contracting, but also to a bigger group of companies known as HBK holding. The
Group has homegrown in Qatar to six companies:

HBK Contracting

HBK Trading

HBK Engineering

ALUTECH

HBK Oil and Gas

HBK REMIX

HBK Contracting
After tracing the companys projects, it can
be noted that it focuses on big national
prestigious projects with high importance to
the state. The company have proved that
that it has a high reliability profile, in 2004 it
was awarded the ISO 140001 Certificate for
its environmentally friendly practices, the
certificate is given to companies that
continually manage to minimize its foot
print.In 2007 a major achievement for the
company was made, HBK has earned ISO 18001 Certificate, which is a major
milestone as health and safety was a top importance for both the company and
the state, the certificate is given to companies who had developed an advance
health and safety management systems. After that the company had its ISO
9001 in 2008 for its quality management system, that has developed rapidly to
cop up with the countrys development.

About HBK
At the moment the company has a Paidup capital of more than 50,000,000 QR,
paid up capital is the money that HBK is
worth from selling all of its stocks to
shareholders. The company is growing it
has 7000 employees, however it also was
affected by the drop of oil prices and this
number is possibly going down.
The W.L.L. company has completed
fundamental projects to the state, these
projects include many public, industrial,
and high superstructures buildings,
however the company is mainly
concerned with the field of infrastructure
and substructure as it is the most
profitable in the market and it plays a
major role in developing the country. The
main client of HBK is the government,
mainly Ashghal and Kahrama, at the
moment also Meshereb and AlRail. One
of the major completed projects is Doha
North Sewerage Treatment Plant. The
company is now undergoing huge
projects mainly in infrastructure, mega
water reservoirs and the rail are main on
going projects. They have a value of
more than ten billion Qatari Riyal. In this
progress report the light will be spotted
on a 662,860,795.39 Qatari Riyal huge
and important Roads and Infrastructure in
Bani Hajer in Al Rayyan.

PRACTICAL SUMMER TRAINING 2016

Project Description
HBK has won the bid of
two package from
Ashghal, package 01
consist of phase 1 and
phase 2, both are north of
Bani Hajer. Phase 1 is the
construction of road and
infrastructure around mall
of Qatar, a half million
square meter shopping
mall, which at the moment
of opening will be the
biggest in Qatar.Phase 1 of
Pakage 01 convers the
East, North and West side
of the mall. Phase 2 of the
pakage is the construction
of roads and infrastructure
of the celebration road at
Al Rayyan Stadium which
is constructed for the
2022 FIFA world Cup.

Road A1101 represent the

East side road, while road
A1201 is the North side
road and Road A1301 is
the road of the West side
of mall of Qatar. In
addition, Road B1001 can
be seen running parallel to the under construction Al Rayyan Stadium.

The project value is 662,860,795.39 Qatari Riyals it started at 15-09-2015 and

expected to be completely finished before 13-09-2017.
For package 01 the total road length if expected to be 4,545meters with an
average corridor of 64 meter wide. There is surface, sewage and drinking waters
pipes, in addition to treated sewage pipes, these pipes has a length of 10,035
meters, also there will be micro tunneling of 735 meters. Micro tunnling is used

in this project as there is a need to lay relatively small pipes at big depths, so to
increase the feasibility HBK has assigned this job to an experienced
subcontractor to save unnecessary excavation expansive. Also QBS is Working
as a Subcontractor and Hyder is the Design consultant.

Assigned Duties
In this training HBK contracting had
assigned me to Roads and Infrastructure
in Bani Hajer North Phase 1 & 2 as a civil
engineering trainee. I am required to
follow up and keep record of the site
activity as well as the lay down are, in
addition I am also required to meet with
MEP engineers in the Villa office to gain
some Multidisciplinary Experience as civil
engineers job always require a high level
of understanding to other disciplines.
During the period of the month of holy
Ramadan my shift was morning from 5:30
am to 11:30am. After that it is from 5:00 to 11:30, in the site then I can go to
laydown area or to the villa office.

In the early morning I go visit the

site and check the development
of the work on the ground, I also
move sometimes with the site
manager, Eng. Jakir and ask
questions about what I notice,
other times I move with the site
Engineers and learn how they
ably the maps on the physical
site. Also I am assigned to learn
how surveyors and welders do
their jobs.

After I finish my daily site visit I go to laydown are where I see how materials
and pipes are recived and tested for approval to be used in the site.

PRACTICAL SUMMER TRAINING 2016

I also go to the villa office after site
visits to have some MEP experience
from the engineers there.

Daily Work Progress

19th of June 2016 (1st day of the training)
All the students from Qatar university were arranged to meet at HBK Head
Office at 8:00 am, first we met in small gathering room and completed paper
work with the company, mainly our information and signed a contract. Next we
went to the main meeting room in the building were each one of us was
assigned to his site we were 12 male students of civil engineering and 1 female
student from Mechanical engineering. 3 of us me Jamal Hannun and my
colleagues Muthana and Ahmed were assigned to Bani Hajer project. By 10:30
am we moved from the Head office in Doha down town to the site, by 11:35 we
made it to the offices in the villa then we were directed to the laydown area. The
road was rough which made it hard for our cars to move faster however we
reached before 12:00 am, everybody was gone as work finish at 11:30 am via
Qatar law. We were not fortunate to meet any representative but we knew the
place. The following are some pictures taken for the laydown area in that day.

On the 2nd morning 4:30 am I met the site manager Eng. Mohamed Jakir we
went from the laydown to the site at mall of Qatar, the site was huge dusty
place. I escorted him all day, we started by visiting the east side and finishing in
the west side of the mall of phase 1 where there was a fascinating variety of the
infrastructure work done. From 5:30 am to 9:00 am we were seeing the progress
done on site then we went to the site office for 1 hour then back to see the
progress tell the end of the day at 10:30 am.

the previous day, from now on there are more
technical details as I ask my supervisor and he
supplied me with the answers, also I was
introduced to the foremen so I can
differentiate between their duties.

22th of June 2016 (the cats problem)

The 4th day of training was focused on west and north sides of the project as
pipes laying continued I noted different pipes for different purposes including
but not limited to treated sewage influent TSE pipes, surface water pipes,
kahrama electricity pipes and communication pipes. All of them have different
proposes and material and way of handling. Though this will be the last day in
site this week as we will be meeting technical experts in the offices villa for the
rest of the week. Today I noted teams doing new jobs like coring holes in casted
manholes and welding plastic pipes.

PRACTICAL SUMMER TRAINING 2016

23th, 25th and 26th of June 2016

For a period of 3 days I was visiting the offices at the villa to interact with the
technical experts and the different structure of people working their including
the project director Mr. Mohamed Ahmed and project manager mr.Shammi
Malhorta, they gave me their feedback about the project then I was introduced
to Eng. Mohammed dosoki whos doing the work for both Civil and mechanical
engineering as he is a mechanical engineer he also do a major work in
mechanical, electrical and plumping MEP as a technical side and with the
drawing. Eng. dosoki assigned me QCS at 25th and IFC at 26th to go over and
have an idea about it. The files were big Qatar Construction Specifications QCS
2.7 Gb of pdf I went over the form work regulation and how should it be done for
RC walls, for the Issued for construction drawings IFC 7 Gb of pdf and CAD files, I
made my self familiar with the roads names and many work details.

During the period of Ramadan there are 2 shifts where Muslim staff work for 6
hours morning 3:30am to 11:30am and a night shift 7:30pm to 3:30am. Today I
worked on the night shift and my main goal was to see concrete pouring as it is
done during the night because during the day it is too hot that will cause it to
start cracking during the curing period. It advised to start pouring after 5:00pm.

During the day, the second phase of mall of Qatar was covered. Infrastructure
work for sewage and storm water pipes is done. Trenches are being excavated
at the outer north to west side of the project just next to Al-Rayyan Club. The
trenches are sic to seven meters in depth, with a width of two to two and half
meters. During the day an air pressure test is observed for sewage water pipes
to check if there is any leakage specially at the joints, the system passed the
test successfully. Also a potable

Road work is being conducted at both the West and the East sides of the Mall.
Starting from the west, subgrade work is done to give a strong foundation for
the road limiting any possible settlement and to raise the road level to the
required elevation making it flat with the top of the manholes. Then a manhole
for sewage water is completed note that sewage manholes are cylindrical
making it easy to clean and maintain them, finally at the East side a more
developed road work is completed as the base is done, and the sides of the road

PRACTICAL SUMMER TRAINING 2016

30th of June, 2nd, 3rd and 4th of July 2016

During the last week before Eid holyday which start at Wednesday 6th of July, I
had technical meetings with engineer Mohamed Dasooki on 30th of june and 2nd
of July. During meetings the engineer shared some multidisciplinary experience
covering material and Civil engineering, in addition to plumbing and chemistry.
During 3rd of July, I went to the site and met the surveying team. Finally at 4th I
visitied the laydown area
During the meeting with Eng. Mohammed, I learnt about different properties of
pipes for example, vitrified clay (VC) pipes are separated to two different pipes,
plain and infiltrated, as the last allow water from outside to penetrate into the
pipe lowering the existing water table or absorbing storm water.
The pipes do not react with chemicals making it a very good choice for sewage
water line, on the other hand infiltrated VC is used for surface water pipes as it
allows water to drain to it. It is also used for small storm water pipes.
However, since VC is fragile it is not safe to use it for bigger diameter pipes
where 1.2 to 1.5 meter pipes are needed to drain storm water. Therefore, RC
pipes with HDPE liner are used. The RC pipe is able to resist the huge loads on
its big diameter, while the high density polyethylene HDPE liner protect the
inside of the pipe from and chemical or oils that could be washed out by the rain
and then attack the surface of the pipe.
Regarding the RC cylindrical manholes for sewage water, the inside of the RC
stricter is insulated with plastic as sewage water carry H2S which convert to
sulfuric acid attacking the walls of the manhole. Keeping it cylindrical help
better insulated when plastic cover is placed, saving both the concrete and the
steel rebars. Thats why epoxy coated bars are not needed.
Also the cylindrical manhole is easier to clean and maintain.

17th to 21th of July 2016

During this week I was replaced to get a different experience in the mega
reservoirs project, the project is huge with 2.3 billion QR as a budget it breaks
many construction records in the industry. It is a five 10.75m high water
reservoirs, a part of the government plan to extend the strategic water storage
from 3 to 7 days. The project has its own pump station which is to be
constructed. The unique thing is that HBK is talking is doing a high selfpreforming in the project with minimum subcontractors.

PRACTICAL SUMMER TRAINING 2016

7th to 11th of August 2016

In the last week I used the time to work on the report utilizing the
engineers to correct any misunderstanding, I also gain an experience
on well drilling learning about the 400meter feeding wells in the
storm water tanks. In package 1 there is 4 wells, while in package 2
there is 5 wells. A well drilling subcontractor is doing the job.

PRACTICAL SUMMER TRAINING 2016

Multidisciplinary Experience
Although that this internship did not had a dense experience of civil engineering
design for superstructures but it had a massive multidisciplinary expertise, from
management to the QA and QC experience to the wide range of materials used
in addition to all the road and infrastructure work done with its MEP experience.
Starting with management, planning
was the first thing that I was exposed
to. How the work is divided to clusters
as shown, made understanding and
handling any project possible. The
flexibility with deadlines and the
redundancy was a main thing that I
noticed in the project, for example if a
pipe broke or a worker was absent
there was a redundant that will do the
job. This ably even on time.
Another thing in planning is the
working structure, on both the work
done and the duties to be done.
Flexibility also was present as the role of site manager can be done by site
engineer if needed or if one excavation
Work divided to clusters with
team is done early they can help others
deadlines
to finish faster.

For the quality assurance and quality control I was induced to QCS and the
method statement and many different tests that must be done that I never
heard of in during my theoretical study. Chemical test for steel bars was one,
also the procedures for those tests was a massive addition to my experience.
Both materials and MEP was a main addition, brief is presented as follows:
In this project the infrastructures are done for water pipes, treated sewage
influent TSE pipes, surface water, storm water, sewage pipes, pressurized
sewage pipes, electricity pipes and telecommunications pipes.
For the water and pressurized sewage, ductile iron pipes with the blue warp and
the inner green painting respectively are used, TSE utilizes Glass fiber reinforced
plastics GRP pipes with diameter of 350mm for long straight distances and thick
High-density polyethylene HDPE where lots of bends are present with varying
diameters. vitrified clay pipes are used as perforated for surface water and
unperforated for storm and sewage water. Also for storm water reinforced
concrete pipes with HDPE liner are used. Likewise, whenever microtunneling is

used for sewage, thick RC pipes with GRP liner are used with 400mm to 600mm
diameter.

PRACTICAL SUMMER TRAINING 2016

On the structural side seeing the big 80x40 meters storm water tank in package
2 had added a lot in term of reinforcement and water insulation work. The ongrade slap was 70cm thick with many steel layers. This added to the structural
knowledge of how the steel reinforcement should overlap. In addition, the
columns were integrated to the slab with steel connections to prevent them
from piercing through the slap.
During the week at the mega reservoirs site, I learnt from Eng. Jakier that the
10.75m form continues steel formwork costed about 40 million QR however it
saved the company much more. Also the formwork engineering of the 10.75m
walls of the water reservoirs hold the record for the highest in Qatar. The
method used is similar to a one side formwork however on bigger scale, this is
important as there will be no need for the ties between the sides of the
formwork making no holes in the wall which is necessary for such huge water
pressure.
Also the steel reinforcement used in the mega reservoir project had epoxy
coating while the storm water tanks had not, this is because it is less likely to
have rain while the water tank will always store water
Another side was the Chemical science, adhesives and cements are always used
in construction, from preventing formwork to stick with concrete to
waterproofing to the injection of micro-cement, it is always needed to carry the
work

Conclusion

In conclusion the training experience was rich with expertise, I had the chance
to work with very professional people on a huge project which added to me on
various levels.
I was able to increase my productivity and the productivity of any team I work
with or manage, since most my time was in the site the management skills that
I gained was useful, how to interact with different people and how and who to
ask for different task was something that I learnt over six weeks in the site. I
also learnt about wide collection of construction methods and material. After the
training I believe I can work in any project utilizing the method statement for
any work and the shop drawings. That can give a complete idea of whats the
work to be done.
I developed an ability to quickly read and map and extract the needed data from
it, and how to handle and organize big files and many drawing in a way that
allow the fastest access to them.
I also made good connections with different people at different positions not
only in HBK but also with cement and gravel factories and with kahrama and
ashghal, also with many HBK subcontractors.
Mainly I was fortunate to see lot of what I studied n college on reality and
develop a vision of how the construction is done.
The weakness of the training is the lake of structural and software experience.
Overall, my training has prepared me to go work in the market in very good
manner.
