Ivebeeninvolvedwithcreatingwebcontentsince1999.In2005Istartedfocusingmoreseriouslyonpho
tographyandinparticularontwoareasofmymanyinterestsinphotography:armouredfightingvehiclesand
aircraft.Ivisitedmuseumsworldwide,andIpublishedsomeofmyimagesonmysites.

Thenitoccurredtome,asmyimagecollectiongrew,perhapsinsteadofjustputtingthemonmysite,why
dontIcreateamoreinterestingwaytosharethem?Perhapsworkingwithoneortwolikemindedindividu
als,wecouldcoversomuchmore.Aftervisitingseveralairshowsin2006and2007Ilookedintowhatwas
available in digital content. Apart from a few websites there was no digital publication that an interested
readercoulddownload.Althoughtherewereseveraldealingwithaviation,warbirdsetc.everythingwasin
print.Asaresult,Ilookedintothisfurtheranddevelopedsomeideas.Irealizedthattraditionalprintmedia
wasfadingfastandwouldsoonbeextinctjustlikethedodobird.

IbecamefriendswithacoupleofphotographersImetatairshows.Withone,wedecidedthatitwouldbea
goodideatowritereportsaboutairshowsweattendedtoenhancethecontentofourwebsites.Between
thetwoofuswecouldcovermanymoreairshows,andperhapsstartupapublication.

In2008,towardstheendoftheairshowseason,Ifoolishlymentionedmyideastoacoupleofotherphotog
raphersIhadmetatairshows,whomIthoughtIcouldtrust.Italkedwiththemaboutjointlyformingsucha
publication.Weagreedtokeepintouchandtoworktogether.Wellthesetwo,whoshallremainnameless,
decidedtoleavemeoutofmyownideaanddecidedtodoitontheirownin2009,justasIwantedtolaunch
The Magazine. Regardless,Icontinued,andfinallythefirstissueof The Magazine wasavailablein
December 2009 with an exceptional collection of quality photographs accompanied by short articles and
summaries.Alotoftimehaspassedsincethefirstissue,andthecontributingstaffgrew,andseveralofthem
alsodepartedforvariousreasons.Mynumberonepriority,whichcontinuestodate,isthequalityoftheim
ages.Onlythebestwilldo!

Itisnowveryironicthatmyimitators,asofDecember2013,stoppedpublishingtheirissues,andtheones
whostillprint,nowonlydosoinalimitedcapacityforsubscribersonly,onlychangedoverrecentlytodigital
editions. The Magazine wasandisthetrendsetterthathasbeencopiedandyetneverbeensurpassed
bythequalityandthesizeofimagesandthevarietyofcontentthatareavailableforFREE!

ExIRIAFpilot:IwoulddefinitelyliketoflytheSu35orthenewMiG29Mwithvectorthrust.It'sdefinitelya
differentsenseofflyingcomparedtotheconventionalfightersIflewbackinmydays.

ASR:SinceinyourpastairforcethereweremanyRussianmadeaircraft,inyourownopiniondoyouthinkthe
currentUSaircraftaresuperiortothecurrentRussianone?
Ex IRIAF pilot: I believe that both Western and Russian fighters have advantages and disadvantages. The
Americanplanesaregreatwithtechnologyandelectronicsbuttheyareexpensiveandheavyonmaintenance.
OntheotherhandtheRussianfighterplanesarenotasgoodinhitechelectronics(theyaregettingbetteras
timegoesby)buttheyaregreatintermsofdurabilityandoperationinharshconditionwithminimumcosts.
Intheairtheyarebothgreatbutultimatelyitcomesdowntotheexperienceofthepilotsandtheconditionof
engagement.InaclosedogfightwithsameskilledpilotsIthinkbothWesternandRussianplanesaregreat
andequalmatch.

And,withthatourbriefinterviewended.

OneoftheinterestingaspectsofworkingonTheMagazineisthatImeetalotofpeopleinvolvedwithavia
tion,manyofthemarepilotsmilitaryorcivilian.Sometimeago,ImetanIranianpilot,whohadflowninthe
IranianAirForce,tobespecificheflewfortheIslamicRepublicofIranAirForce(IRIAF).Toprotecthisiden
tity,hisnameandphotosofhimwillnotbeusedinthefollowinginterview.

ASR:WhydidyoujointheAF?Wasitmandatorytojoinaserviceorwasitvoluntary?
ExIRIAFpilot:IalwaysusedtoloveairplanesandalsooneofmyrelativeswasanAirForceFighterpilot(The
ImperialIranianAirForce[IIAF]).IgrewupwatchinghimflyingandIknewthatiswhatIwantedtodoformy
career. It wasn't mandatory to join the air force but it was mandatory to serve two years in the armed
forces.ItrainedandservedintheArmyandwasselectedforthespecialforcesandservedfortwoyearsbe
foreIjoinedtheairforce.

ASR:Howlongwasyourtrainingandonwhichtypeofaircraft?
ExIRIAFpilot:Thegeneraltrainingtakes4yearsbeforeonegetstheirwingsandisassignedtooperational
squadrons.Thefirst8weeksarethebasicofficertrainingfollowedbyEnglishclassesinthemorningandpara
chute,survivalandbasicacademicsintheafternoon.MyfirstflightswereonglidersfollowedbyT45(Cessna
172),afterthatweflewonPilatusPC7andEmbraerTucano's.Afterthosethepilotsdecidedtogointoeither
fighters, heavy transports or helicopters. I and 8 other guys were selected for fighters and started our jet
trainingontheT38Talons.WelatermovedontoF5F(twoseatertrainers)whichfollowedbyF5ETigerII
aircrafts.MostofmyflyingwasdoneonF5sandIlovedit.Weusedtogettwoorsometimesthreehubsper
day!Iwaslaterselectedoutof19studentstoflyamoreadvancedfightertheF14Tomcat.Fewoftheother
studentsmovedontoMiG29s.

ASR:WhileyouweretrainingontheT38s,didyoueverflyfasterthanthespeedofsound?
ExIRIAFpilot:Actuallyafterthebasictrainingwe'veflownquiteafewsupersonicflights,myfirstsupersonic
flightwasontheT38TalonandprettymuchweflewsupersoniconallthetypesofaircraftIflew.

ASR:Whereyoueverincombat?
ExIRIAFpilot:Iwasneverincombatbutprettymuchallofmyinstructorshadyearsofexperienceincombat
andwereveryseasonedfighterpilots.

ASR:Canyoutellmewhatwasliketoflytheoneyouflewthemost?
ExIRIAFpilot:Itwasthegreatestfeelinginmylife.Itshardtodescribeit.That'swhyitsveryhardsometimes
toconnectwithpeoplewhohaven'tgonethroughthesameexperience.Thefeelingsoffreedomandpower
and joy and fear and happiness all mixed together; like riding a rollercoaster but a million time's better. It
makes you feel like a superman! Invisible, they say fighter pilots are arrogant and cocky! I say that's about
rightbuttheyhaveagoodreasonforthat.Itsanelitegroupofhighlyskilledprofessionalswhodemonstrate
thehighestorderofphysicalandmentaldisciplinewithverylittleornoroomformistakes.Onceyouhaveex
periencedbeingapartofthisgroupitsveryhardtobeabletoexplaintootherswhatitfeelslike.Flyingthe
F14TomcatswasfunforsurebutcomparetoF5'sitwaslotsofwork.Moreelectronicsandmoreresponsibil
ityspeciallyIwasflyingwithseniorinstructorsinthebackseatbreathingdownonmyneckbutneverthelessI
hadagreatsenseofprideflyingit.

ThePlanesofFamemuseuminChino,California,honoredthehistoryandcontributionsofthemen,women,
andaircraftofthe8th AirForceinWorldWarIIduringitsannualairshowMay34.ASalutetotheMighty
Eighthfeaturedmorethanfortywarbirdsintheairandapaneldiscussionwithseveralveteransinattendance.
Inadditiontothehistoricaircraft,theairshowfeaturedatacticaldemonstrationbytheUSAirForcespremier
fighter aircraft, the F22 Raptor, and, in a demonstration which unites the past with the present, a Heritage
FlightoftheF22,P38,P47andP51.AhighlightoftheshowwasseeingfourP47Thunderboltsflyinginfor
mation.

This warbird extravaganza featured WWII Pacific, WWII European and Korean air war demonstrations inter
spersedwithaerobaticdisplays.Almostalloftheaircraftscheduledtoflywereparkedinfrontofthefence,and
thisareawasopeninthemorningtoallowcloseupviewing.Additionalaircraft,includingaPB4YPrivateerand
A4Skyhawk,wereonstaticdisplayonly.Therewasalsoareenactorscampsetup,withaShermantank,aHet
zertankdestroyerandseveralothergroundvehiclesondisplay.Someofthereenactorsandjeepswouldlater
takepartintheKoreanWarcloseairsupportdemonstration.Theflyingbeganpromptlyat1100withafourship
formationcomposedofaP38LightningandthreeP47Thunderbolts.ThiswasfollowedbythreeC47Skytrains
makingseveralpasses.

RobHarrison,theTumblingBear,putonabeautifulaerobaticperformanceinhisnewZlin142caircraft.Sean
D.Tucker,flyingthebrightredOracleChallengerIIIbiplaneamazedthecrowdsasonlyhecan,openinghisper
formancewithaseriesofsnaprollsonthedownlineandneverlettingupuntilafterhehadcompletedhissig
nature triple ribbon cut. It was great seeing John Collver overcome the engine problems he had experienced
earlierintheseasonandreturnhisAT6WarDogtotheskies.RonHackworthputonasimilarlygracefulae
rialdemonstrationpilotingtheN9MBFlyingWing.ClayLacyshowedwhataLearjetcandointhehandsofan
experiencedpilot,andfewpeoplehavemoreexperiencethanhe.Butformany,theaerobatichighlightofthe
showwasseeingTheHorsemenperformtheirflawlessformationroutine.Andnotonlyonce,buttwice:firstin
the P51 Mustang and again in the F86 Sabrejet, keeping the three aircraft in perfect synchrony through a
beautifulseriesofloopsandrolls.

The Pacific Theater Demonstration featured two F4U Corsairs, an F6F Hellcat, three B25 Mitchells, an SBD
Dauntless,aTBMAvenger,aVal(replica),Zero,FM2Wildcat,P40WarhawkandP51Mustang.

TheEuropeanTheaterDemonstrationfeaturedtwoB17s,sevenP51s,aP40,Spitfire,PilatusP2andalone
FW190.Clearly,airsuperioritybelongedtotheAllies.

The Korean Air Battle Demonstration began with a ground convoy driving out onto the runway. It
wasattackedbyaYak3,whichresultedinaForwardAirControllerAT6callinginairsupport.Theair
battleescalatedwiththearrivalofanF4U,aP51,anAD5andanF7F.TheappearanceofaMiG15
sooncausedbothanF86andaT33tobescrambledandthevintagejetsquicklyengagedinaspir
iteddogfight.

TheF22Raptorputonanimpressivedisplayofmodernjetfightercapabilities,demonstratinghow
fartechnologyhasprogressedinjustoverfiftyyears.ItwaslaterjoinedbyaP38,P47andP51for
theHeritageFlight.

Temperatures approached 100 degrees on Saturday but luckily a nice breeze kept things comfort
able.Anyway,inCaliforniacoolisnotatemperature,itsastateofmind,andwiththatattitudethe
crowds enjoyed the incredible performances of almost fifty aircraft flying virtually nonstop in the
beautifulblueSoCalskies.

Chinoisveryphotographerfriendly:onecanapproachtheaircraftquiteclosely,theytaxibyrightin
frontofthecrowdlineandtheymakenumerouspasses,bankinghardonapproach.A300mmlens
issufficienttocapturemostofthewarbirds.Thereisaphotographerssunrisetourwhichstartsat
0500foranadditionalfee,andtheFridayarrivalsandrehearsaldayisalsoopenforafee.Shoot
ingintothesunandkeepingupwiththemanyhighspeedpassesaretheonlydifficultiesfacing
photographers,andbothoftheseobstaclescanbeovercomewithpractice.

The Red Bull Air Race World Championship series returned for the 2014 season after a 3 year hiatus with
stops in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E. and Rovinj, Croatia before arriving in Putrajaya, Malaysia, a city located about
30km south of Kuala Lumpur. Putrajaya is a very new city, mostly built within the last 20 years. The man
madelakethatsprawlsnorthtosouththroughthecitywastheracingvenueforthisthirdstopofthe2014
Championship.

ThesouthernendofPutrajayaLakewastheconcentrationofthisAirRace.Twobridges(SeriSaujanaBridge
tothenorthandSeriGemilangBridgetotheeast)formedfigurativebarriersfortheracecourse.Pilotsen
teredthetrackduewestoverSeriGemilangbridgetopassthroughthestartgate.Afteraslightleftturnto
entergate#2,thecoursethenflowedthrougha3pylonchicanepassingtotheleftofthefirstone,rightof
thesecond,andleftofthethird.Anextrapylonpostedpastthechicanerequiredpilotstomanoeuvreintoa
hardrightturntosetupforthethirdstandardgate.Aleftturnaftergate#3setupthepilotsforgate#4,at
thenorthendofthecourse.Uponpassingthroughgate#4,thecoursedictatedaverticalturningmanoeuvre
toaimthepilotbackatgate#3.Thisstartedthesecondpassthroughthecourse,inreverse.Afterpassing
throughthestartgate,anotherverticalturningmanoeuvrewasrequiredtosendthepilotsbacktogate#2
foranotherlap.TherunwascompletewhenthepilotpassedthroughtheStart/Finishgateforthesecond
time,dueeast.
Red BullRacing Format: For therace, the pilots are allowed to practice and survey thecourse one by one
throughoutthetwodayspriortoQualifyingDay.TheyareofficiallytimedintheirrunsonFriday,andusing
thosetimes,rankedinarunningorderforQualifyingonSaturday.Qualifyingconsistedoftwoheats,withthe
besttimeofeachpilotbetweenthetwoheatsbeingusedtodeterminetheirracingorderandmatchupsfor
theTop12roundonRaceDay.TheTop12roundisaheadtoheadstylecompetition,wherethefastestand
slowestqualifiersarepittedagainsteachother,2ndand11thfastest,andsoon.Thewinnerofeachmatchup
andthetwofastestlosersmoveontotheSuper8round.Thepilotsthenflythecourseinorderfromslowest
to fastest times from the Top 12 round. The four fastest times from this round advance to the Final Four
round.1stthrough4thplacesaredeterminedbythisfinalheat.Ifatanytimeduringanyroundapilotdoes
notfinishhisrunforcoursedeviation,safetyclimbout,pylonstrike,ormissinghisstarttimeheautomati
callyplaceslastforthatround.

QualifyingsawHannesArch(AUS)postthefastesttimefollowedcloselybyPeteMcLeodandMattHall.Inthe
Top12onSunday,YoshihideMuroya,KirbyChambliss,NicolasIvanoff,andMichaelGoulianwereeliminated
leavingChamblissandGoulianstillinsearchoftheirfirstChampionshippointsthisseason.Afterthesmokeset
tledfromtheSuper8round,Arch,NigelLamb,McLeodandHallhadpoweredthroughtothefinal4.Lambwent
first,postingacourserecordtimeof1:15.023.Hallfollowedwithastrongrun,butfellshortofLamb'smarkwith
a1:16.691time.McLeodroaredintothestartgateat201knots,whichwasoneknottoofastaccordingtothe
rulebook. He was disqualified after the judges confirmed his overspeed start, in a shocking turn of events
McCleodwasexpectedtothreatenArch'spositionontopofthepodium.Archfollowedwithhisfinalrunofthe
weekend,andagainstallexpectations,finishedslowerthanLamb'stimebyoverhalfasecond(1:15.597),landing
him2ndPlace.Halltookthird,asMcLeodautomaticallydroppedoutofcontentiontofourthwithhisDNF.Lamb,
afterflyingin44racesoverthecourseofsevenyears,hadfinallyregisteredhisfirstRedBullwin.Thiscameasa
largesurprise,especiallywithfavouritePaulBonhomme'sdisappointingfinishof5thandArch'ssaferunto2nd
nottomentionLambhadsufferedacoursedeviationpenalty(DNF)inthe2ndheatofqualifying.

Luckily not all airlines are the same! There are a few that still take care and treat their customers
withagreatamountofhospitality,careanddignity!Finnairhastheslogan"Designedforyou"and
isoneofthemostinnovative,safestandlongestoperatingairlinesintheworld.Accordingtotheir
CEO,PekkaVauramo"Thecustomerisattheheartofwhatwedo."We,thatismyseniorphotogra
pherandI,hadthepleasuretoflyfromTorontotoHelsinkiandfromHelsinkitoParisandbackwith
them.

IfyouresideinNorthAmerica,chancesarethatyouprobablyneverheardofFinnair,butdoreadon,
itismorethanworthwhiletolearnaboutthisoutstandingairline.

Finnairisoneoftheworld'soldestcontinuallyoperatingairlinesthatwasfoundedon1November
1923.Withnofatalorhulllossaccidentssince1963,ithasalsobeenrankedoneofthesafestairlines
intheworld.FinnairholdsastrongpositionintheOneworldairlinealliancechosenasthehighest
qualityairlinealliance,bySkytraxWorldAirlineAwardsreportpublishedinsummer2013,andrated
bythemas"TopclassserviceNorthernEuropesbestairline."

FinnairoriginallywasfoundedasAeroO/Y(AeroLtd),byBrunoLucander.Inmid1923Lucandercon
cludedanagreementwithJunkersFlugzeugwerkeAGtoprovideaircraftandtechnicalsupportinex
changefora50%ownershipinthenewairline.Thefirstflightwason20March1924fromHelsinkito
Tallinn, Estonia on a Junkers F.13 aircraft equipped with floats. The seaplane service ended in De
cember 1936 following the construction of the first aerodromes in Finland. Finnair's plan for long
haulexpansiontotheUnitedStateswasfirsttalkedaboutinthe1930s,inthecompany'searlyyears.
The expansion had to wait, however, as plans were put on hold after the outbreak of the Second
WorldWar.

DuringWWIIitwasaverydifficultperiodfortheairlinewithhalfofthefleetsuchastheJunkersJu
52/3mandDC2requisitionedbytheFinnishAirForce.AfterWWIItheFinnishgovernmentacquired
amajoritystakeinthecompanyin1946andreestablishedservicestoEuropeinNovember1947,
initiallyusingtheDouglasDC3.In1953,theairlinebeganbrandingitselfasFinnair.

Doyourememberwhentravelbyairwasapleasure,oraluxury?Ifyouareover60yearsoldyou
probablydo!Oh,thegoodolddaysWouldn'titbenicetoexperiencesomeofthatagain?

OvertheyearsIhavetravelledtensofthousandsofmilesbyaircraft,forvacationsandcoveringair
showsandotherrelatedeventsinNorthAmericaaswellasworldwide.Theregularscheduledair
lines(notincludinganychartershere)Itraveleduponnotinanyparticularorderwere:KLM,AirCan
ada,Swissair,Malev,JetAirways,United,Lufthansa,WestJet,Aeroflot,AirMalta,Southwest,Ameri
can,Delta,Eastern,BritishAirways,BruxellsAirlinesandrecentlyonFinnair.Someofthelistedair
linesarenolongeroperating.

Acoupleofmyflightswereverymemorableinaverypositiveway;frommyfirstflightwithMalev
whenIwasonly6yearsoldonaLi2in1959,tomyfirsttransatlanticonaKLMBoeing707in1965.
Someontheotherhandwereflightsfromhell,anditwasn'tAeroflot,asmostpeoplewouldassume.

Unfortunatelythesedaysairtravelismoreofahasslethananythingelse.Gettotheairportseveral
hoursahead,checkin,lineupforsecurity,dealwithunprofessionalandrudesecuritypersonnelwho
probeyouandfeelyouup,xray,scanyou,andgenerallyhandleyouandtrytomakeyoufeellike
cattleataslaughterhouse,andfinallyafteryoumadeittoyourgateareaandboardedyouraircraft,
youarenowsqueezedinlikeasardineinatincanwithseatssoclosethatyouneedtohaveoilfor
lubricationinordertoeaseintoyourseat.

Oh, did I mentioned the poor customer service, smelly cabin interiors, flight attendants with atti
tudes,spillingliquidsoverpassengersortheirexpensivecameragear,brokenentertainmentunits,
foodthatwasunfitforhumanconsumptionifyouareluckytogetany,andtheoutrageousprices
theywantforasmallbagofsaltedalmondsorfoodonshorthaulflights?TherearecoupleairlinesI
willneverflywithagain,period,asmyexperienceswiththemwassobad.Iwouldratherpay50%
moreifIhavetoflywithanotherairline.

TheConvair440twinenginedpressurisedairlinerwasacquiredfromJanuary1953andthesefasteraircraft
wereoperatedonthecompany'slongerroutesasfarasLondon.In1961,Finnairjoinedthejetagebyadding
SudAviationSECaravellestoitsfleet.ThesewerelaterexchangedwiththemanufacturerforPratt&Whitney
JT8DenginedSuperCaravelles.In1962,Finnairacquireda27%controllinginterestinaprivateFinnishairline,
KarAir.FinnairOybecamethecompany'sofficialnameon25June1968.In1969,ittookpossessionofitsfirst
U.S.madejet,aDouglasDC8.

FinnairflightsfromHelsinkiviaCopenhagenandAmsterdamtoNewYorkbeganon15May1969.Finnairflew
toNewYorkwithDC8aircraft,whichheldnearly200passengers.Finnairreceiveditsfirstwidebodyaircraft
in1975,twoDC1030planes,whichcarriednearly300passengers.Thefirstofthesearrivedon4February
1975andenteredserviceon14Februarythesameyear,flyingbetweenHelsinkiandLasPalmas,CanaryIs
lands.

Inrecentyears,akeypartofFinnair'sstrategyhasbeenstrengtheningthecompany'spositionintheAsian
marketandparticularlyintrafficbetweenEuropeandAsia.

Finnair'sFarEasternexpansionbeganwiththestartofthecompany'sdirectflightstoBangkokinNovember
1976.On22April1983FinnairopenednonstopflightsfromHelsinkitoTokyo,theonlyEuropeanairlineto
offersuchaserviceatthattime.AsthecompanywasnotallowedtoflythroughSovietairspace,Finnairhad
theideaoffittingtheDC10aircraftwithextrafueltanks,whichmadethe13hourflightspossible.

DirectflightstoBeijingbeganon2June1988,makingFinnairthefirstWesternEuropeanairlinetohaveanon
stoproutebetweenEuropeandChina.

Today, Finnair's position in traffic between Europe and Asia is well established and growing strongly. In its
Asian expansion, the company is supported in particular by Finland's favourable geographical position: the
shortestroutesfromEuropetotheFarEastpassthroughHelsinki.

theserviceonourflight?"

FlyinginfromTorontosTerminal3toHelsinkiwithBusinessClassticketsisanexcellentwaytotraveldueto
the8hoursapproximatelyofflight.TheaircraftisawidebodiedAirbusA330300,thathasanglelieflat
seatsfortheBusinessClass.Thislayoutistheoldertype,withdualseatsidebyside,andmanyofFinnairs
longhaulaircrafthavebeenupgradedtothenewfullflatseatsZodiacSeatsUKVantagemodel,individual
seatswhichfeatureflatbedconversions.Regardless,eventheoldertypeisverycomfortablewith60leg
room,andtheseatscanbeadjustedtoaninfinitenumberofpositions.EachseatisequippedwithAVOD
(Audio Visual on Demand) with a large selection of movies, television, music, games and other program
ming.Thepersonalentertainmentscreenisapproximately17indiagonalandareoperatedbyremotecon
trolstoredintheseatsarmrest.Headsetsarecomplimentaryaswellasblanketsandpillows.Traytablesare
storedintheseat'sarmrest,aswellasadditionalseatcontrolscanbefoundbyliftingupthearmrestcover.

TheflightsfromTorontoleavearound10:35p.m.,intheeveningandarrivearound1:45p.m.,intheafter
noonlocalHelsinkitime.InTorontotheticketcounterpersonnelarecontractpeopleandarenotaffiliated
withFinnair,andunfortunatelytheydonotreflectthefriendlinessandhelpfulnessIveexperiencedonce
aboardtheaircraft,ortheFinnairscounterstaffinHelsinki.

Onceaboardandseated,weweregreetedbysmilingfacesandwerewelcomedbythecabincrewwithour
choiceofaglassofchampagne,orangejuiceorwater.Shortlyafterourtakeoffweweregivenamenuto
orderourdinnerfromandaseparatewinelist,thatincludedaselectionofexcellentwines.Ivepickedthe
salmondinnerandChateauLiot,fromFrance.Thefood,thewineaswellasthedessertswereverygood,
andIhadseveralservingsofthedessert,Imightadd.Alcoholicandnonalcoholicbeveragesarecontinu
ouslyservedbytheveryattentivecabincrewthroughouttheflight.

Belowaresomeimagesofthefoodthatwasservedonourflights,alwaysonatablecloth,underourtray,on
porcelainplateswithrealutensils,andcrystalglasses.Notethedeliciouslookingandtastingdesserts!

AfterdinnerIadjustedmyseattojustaboutflatpositionforsomemuchneededsleep.Isleptforaboutfour
hoursandabouttwohoursbeforeourlandinginHelsinkibreakfastwasserved.

OurlandinginHelsinkiwas15minutesaheadofourarrivaltime,duetosometailwind.Iwassurprisedaswell
asmanyotherpassengersthatouraircraftdidnotpulluptotheterminal,asonewouldexpectfordisembar
kation,butstoppedontheapronneartheterminal.Meaningthatwehadtousearampwithstairstodisem
barkandtouseabustogettotheterminal.Thiswastheonlyslightdiscomfort,ontheoverallflightexperi
ence,duetocarryingdownonthestairsmyratherheavysuitcasecrampedwithcameragear,versusjustroll
ingmysuitcaseofffromtheaircraft.ThisprocedurewasalsorepeatedinreverseforourflightbacktoTo
ronto.

Academysimulatorsuptospeedwithcurrentaircrafttechnology.Thesimulatorsaremaintainedtoalevel
thatguaranteeshighreliability24hourseverydayoftheyear.Eachsimulatorhasawiderangeofairport
scenesavailable,toensurethatthepilottrainingcanbeperformedatanyairportthatFinnairfliesto.The
FinnairFlightAcademyofferssimulatortimenotjustfortheirownpilotsbutforadditionalcustomers,and

The Finnish Aviation Museum is located close to HelsinkiVantaa Airport. Since we are interested in aviation our friend Heikki
thoughtthatwewouldenjoyabriefvisithere,andmadearrangementspriortoourarrival.

Themuseumcollectionincludes80civilandmilitaryaircraftandamultitudeofotheraviationrelatedexhibits,suchasengines,pro
pellers,measuringdevice,radioequipment,scalemodels,airportgroundequipmenthousedinthreeexhibitionhallsandevenflight
simulators.TheflightsimulatorsarequiteuniquetotheFinnishAviationMuseum.GeneralAviationexperienceisavailablewithtwo
differentsimulators.ThenostalgicPiperAztecsimulatorbringsareal,old,twinengineaircrafttolifeusinguniqueLockheedMartin
Prepar3Dflighttrainingsoftwaretheaircraftuponwhichthesimulatorisbuiltservedasaschoolplane,untilbeingdamagedbe
yondrepairinacrashnearTallinninthelate1990's.

craft,themuseumalsoprovidescustomer
flights in the Diamond DA42, training
simulator. The Diamond simulator is a
fully licensed flight training simulator,

the Messerschmitt Bf109G2 simulator,
portrayingoneofthefinestandmostfa
mouswarbirdsoftheSecondWorldWar.

We were offered a flight, and my col


league took the control stick for
about 30 minutes or so. I passed in
favourofjusttakingimages.

The Messerschmitt fighter played a


very important role as the main
fighter type of the Finnish Air Force
duringWWII.

Finlandislocatedapproximately180milesorabout300kmsnorthof
Helsinki, (about 3.5 hours by car) in the village of Tikkakoski. The
AviationMuseumofCentralFinlandwasopenedin1979andsince1987itisalsotheofficiallyFinnishAir
ForceMuseum.

ThehistoryoftheSUOMENILMAVOIMATFinnishAirForcecanbetracedback6thofMarch1918,when
SwedishCountEricvonRosengavethenewlyfoundedFinnishStateitsfirstaircraftasagiftaSwedish

ThehighlightofthevisitformanyistheBrewsterF2A1Buffaloondisplay.TheFinnishB239(serialno.BW
372,creditedwith41kills),shotupbyaRussianHawkerHurricaneandwhichthencrashlandedin1942un
derthecontrolofFiNAFLt.LauriPekuri.In1998itwasdiscoveredinLakeBigKolejrvi,about31mi(50km)
fromSegezha,Russia.TheNationalMuseumofNavalAviationinPensacola,Florida,USAacquiredit,in2004.
Inearly2008theaircraftwasloanedtotheKeskiSuomenIlmailumuseo,AviationMuseumofCentralFinland
forthe90thanniversaryoftheFinnishAirForce.WhileitisstillondisplayattheMuseum,soonerorlaterit

Iveneverbeenfarthernorththan50paralleleverinmylife.And,nowIamat63031North,thesame
parallellatitudeasFrobisherBay,Canada,however,IamnotinmyhomecountrybutinsteadinFinland.
ThecountryknownforInformationTechnologysuchasNokiatelephones,Nokiantyres,187,888lakes,ex
cellentvodka,sauna,moose,reindeer,nottomentionthe42differenttypesofmosquitoes,andapparently
thehomeofSantaClaus.AccordingtotheFinnairslivery,onsomeoftheiraircraft,maybebecauseKorva
tunturihaslongbeenknownasSanta'shome,andtwothemeparks,SantaClausVillageandSantaParkare
located near Rovaniemi. The Finns also invented ice skates. However, I am not here to see Santa, or to
learntoskate,buttoseesomeF/A18s.

IamnotalonebutaccompaniedbyRicardo,oneofourreporter/photographer,andHeikki,aformerFINAF
personnelwhoisnowflyingasCaptainatFinnair,norwerehereforanaviationtoureither.ASRMediais
hereforanAirBasevisittolearnabouttheFinnishAirForce(FINAF)whichhadbeenofficiallysanctioned,
forwhichweareverygrateful.WewereinvitedtoseeaFighterSquadron(FS)31stationedattheKarelia
AirCommand.TheirSquadroninsigniaisaLynx.

KareliaAirCommandislocatedinSiilinjrvi,14kilometres(9mi)northofKuopiocitycentre.Kuopiois393
kmnortheastofHelsinki.TheAirCommandislocatedatthesouthernsectionoftheKuopioAirport,which
is almost completely surrounded by the nearby lakes. The weather was changing very quickly with dark
cloudsblowingin,thatindicatedafewquickandimminentshowers.

AttheairbaseentranceweweremetbyCaptainTomiLyytinen.Afterourpassportswereverified,wefol
lowedCapt.Lyytinen,inourrentalcarontothebase.WeweretakentotheOperationsbuildingwherewe
wereintroducedtoourhostMajorVilleHakala,theCommander,oftheFS31.

Maj.Hakala,presenteduswithanindepthslidepresentationaboutthemissionoftheFINAF,andoftheFS
31.Fromthepresentationwehadlearnedthefollowing:

FinlandisnotpartofNATO,whileithasbeenamemberoftheEuropeanUnionsince1995andbecame
partoftheEurozonein1999.Finland,howeverispartofNordicDefenceCooperation(NORDEFCO)since
November 2009. The purpose of NORDEFCO is to strengthen the participants national defence, explore
synergiesandfacilitateefficientcommonsolutions.ThemembersareDenmark,Finland,Iceland,Norway
andSweden.Finlandhasarelativelysmallmilitaryforceandtheirobjectiveisstrictlydefenceoftheirbor
ders.

TherearethreeAirCommandsinFinland;AirCommandsLaplandAirCommand,KareliaAirCommand,and
SatakuntaAirCommand.TheAirCommandsfocusonanoperationalmissionofprovidingsurveillanceand
airpolicingofFinlandsairspaceona24/7basisyearround.

overitsareaofresponsibility(AOR)inEasternFinland,preventsairspaceviolations,andtrainsconscripts,

ThefullmissionsofKareliaAirCommandincludeairpolicingoveritsareaofresponsibility,theprevention
oftheunauthorizeduseofairspace,andthetrainingofconscripts,reservists,andactivedutypersonnel.To
carryoutthesemissionstheAirCommandmaintainsthecontinuoussurveillanceofairspaceusingground
based and airborne radars and launches a quick reaction alert fighter on an identification mission if re
quired.

Karelia Air Command prepares for wartime operations by keeping all appropriate plans uptodate and
maintainingitsequipmentreadyforuse.Designatedpersonnelandmaterielarereadytorollaroundthe
clock,365daysayear.TheAirCommandemployssixhundredprofessionalsofalltrades.Thenumberof
activedutystaffandotherpersonnelinpermanentjobsis450,whiletheremainder150isconscriptscarry
ingouttheirmilitaryservice.

Afterthemissionbriefing,weweretakentotheF18simulator,whereweweregivenanhourtotrytofly
theF18.Mycolleaguetookfirstturninflyingthesimulator,andIgaveupmyseattoourFinnairCaptain,
for him to enjoy the rare experience. After the simulator we were treated to lunch by Maj. Hakala, at a
nearbyrestaurantoffthebase.Aswewerereturning,thedarkcloudswereoverthebase,andafewdrops
madetheirominouspresenceknown,astowhattoexpectanyminute.And,itwasntforlongitstartedto
pourveryheavily.

Even though the Hornets normally operate from permanent air bases, they can be dispersed and flown
fromhighwaystripsintheeventofcrisis.

TheHornetsarecurrentlyundergoingextensivemidlifeupgrades.ThelastMLU1configuredaircraftwas
rolled out in late 2010. The MLU 1 program focused on bettering the types airtoair capabilities and
broughtaboutahelmetmountedsightingsystemforimprovedcloseincombatcapabilityandtheupdated
AIM9X version of the Sidewinder infrared guided missile. A new interrogator/transponder was fitted to
facilitate identification in combat, and a tactical moving map selectable on the cockpit displays was in
stalled.

Thesecondupgrade,designatedMLU2isunderway,aircraftthathaveundergonetheMLU2upgradeare
beingtakenintooperationaluse.TheF/A18Hornetswillreachfulloperationalcapabilityby2018.Thepri
maryobjectiveoftheMLU2istoenhancetheHornetscapabilityforbeyondvisualrangecombat,itsair
togroundcapabilitywillbeactivatedandtheinteroperabilityofequipmentwillbeimproved.TheHornets
asurfaceattackcapabilitywillbeusedtosupportthecombatoftheotherservicesduringjointoperations.
Inadditiontothis,theMLU2programintroducesanimprovedAIM120AMRAAMradarguidedmissilefor
uppedaircombatcapability,updatedcommunicationandnavigationsystems,andtheLink16datalinkfor
interoperability.TheupgradewillenhancetheHornetscapabilityforbeyondvisualrangecombat,itsair
togroundcapabilitywillbeactivatedandtheinteroperabilityofequipmentwillbeimproved.Othermodifi
cationsincludethesubstitutionofcathoderaytubecockpitdisplaysforliquidcrystalunits,andupdatesin
the sensor and electronic countermeasures suites. On top of all these, the aircraft receive software up
dates,sparesarebeingprocuredfortheremainderofthetypeslifespan,thejetsstructureisbeefedup,
andenginesaresubjectedtooverhaul.

TheHornetsaresooncomingtotheendofthesecondthirdoftheirlifespan.OtheroperatorsofHornets,
suchastheRAAFandRCAFarelookingintothenextgenerationoffightertoreplacetheiragingfleet.By
the2020stheHornetsreachtheendoftheirlifespan.ItwillbeinterestingtoseewhichaircrafttheFiNAF
willchoosetoreplaceit.

TheprimarymissionoftheAirCommandisdefensive,toprotecttheairspaceoverFinland.Theairbase
hasaquickreactionforce,andaHornetorseveralofthemifrequired,canbelaunchedinaveryfewmin
utesanddirectedtowardstheirtargettowardoffanyintrudersthatmayapproachandcannotbeidenti
fiedbyradar.Airpolicingisanecessaryphaseofitsoperation.DespitebeingtheprimarymissionofKarelia
AirCommand,airpolicingformsjustasmallpartofthewholespectrumofoperationsthattheAirCom
mandundertakes.Foreffectiveairpolicing,theAirCommandsentirepersonnelmustworktogetherseam
lesslyandpossessthefullmasteryoftheirduties.

canloadAIM9XandAIM9Mthemissilestothewingrails.Wealsohad
achancetositinsidetheF/A18MLU1,andhaveourphotostaken.

The rain, luckily for us, stopped rather quickly and some sunshine
brokethroughthedarkclouds.Capt.Fingerroosnowwasabletogetinto
his aircraft, which was just a regular Hornet without any special paint
schemeunliketheCanadianCF188.IvementiontheCanadianasarefer
enceastheRCAFtheysharethesameleftsidelighttoidentifyaerialtar
gets,astheFINAFHornetsdo.

Wewentouttothetarmactotakephotosofhimtakingoff,makingim
pressive rooster tails on the wet runway, but a bit far from taking good
enoughimages.HeliftedtheHornetquicklyandperformedaveryimpres
sivedemonstrationofhisskillsandtheabilityoftheHornet.Tooursur
priseheevendeployedflares,whichcaughtusoffguardatfirst.

JustasCapt.Fingerrooslandedandafterposedforsomeimagestherain
returned,firstafewdropsonly.WewereinformedthatthreeHornets
will be launching, thus we walked back to the infield as close as we
could to the tarmac to watch them take off. By now it was pouring
heavily,andofcoursewehadnoraingearon,wegottrulysoaked,but
keptonshooting.WelloneofuswiththeproNikongeardid,astheyare
very well sealed for such actions. Once all of them were up we then
headedbacktotheoperationbuildingquicklytodryoffourgearwithpa
pertowels.

We spent another hour or so talking with Capt. Fingerroos and Markku


KangasniemiChiefoftheMaintenance.FromCapt.Fingerrooswelearned
abouttheFinnishAirForceHornetDemoTeam.

MeetingArienLeTempsdesHlices

LaFert!Toairshowenthusiastsaroundtheworldthesetwowordsimmediatelyconjureupvisionsofwhat
is widely accepted to be the best vintage aviation event on the European Continent. This twoday affair
takesplaceovertheweekendofPentecost,whichexplainswhythedateschangeeveryyear.Thisyearit
happenedtofallrightafterthe70thanniversaryofDDay.TheeventishostedbytheAmicaleJeanBaptiste
SalisattheArodromedeCerny/LaFertAlaislocatedroughly50kmsouthofParis.Itfeaturesflyingper
formancesbyairplanesfromthedawnofpoweredflighttothejetsofthemodernFrenchArmedForces.

Theairfieldliesatthetopofaruralhillwithasinglewindinglaneasitsonlyaccess.Despitethisfact,the
trafficmovedrelativelyquicklythroughthemultiplepaymentlanesandontotheexpansiveparkingfield.
Recentthunderstormshadsoakedthegroundsandonehadtobecarefulofthemudinplaces,butoverall
thingsworkedfairlywell,atleastonSaturday.AnyoneaccustomedtoOshkoshwouldfeelrightathome,
includingtheonsitecampingfacilities.Therearenosecuritychecksandmanyfamiliesbroughteverything
neededforadaylongpicnicouting.Therewerequiteafewfoodanddrinkstandsofferingeverythingfrom
bakesaleitemsfromlocalschoolorganizationstomoreprofessionalvendors.Thepriceswereveryreason
ablebyairshowstandardsandthequalitywasalsoquitegood.Awholetentcitywasfullofvariousexhibi
torsandpurveyorsofaviationrelatedbooks,surplusparts,clothingandotherparaphernalia.

Butthereasontobehereistoseetheplanes,whichmeantheadingallthewaytoshowrightwhereallthe
aircraft were on static display. Entry required an addi
tional 5 fee which seems to be the norm for European
shows. The aircraft are roped off, but one can get fairly
closeandtheyareparkedfarenoughaparttogetdecent
photos.TheintermittentrainonSaturdaymorninginter
ruptedthestaticviewing,buttheopenhangarsprovided
shelterandtheManhattanDollsprovidedmusicalenter
tainment.

Theflyingportionoftheshowbeganshortlyafternoon,
by which time the skies had cleared and the tempera
tureshadrisen.Theallureofthismeetingisitsflyingcov
erageofprettymuchthewholeofpoweredflightwith,of
course,anemphasisonpropellerdrivenaircraft.Itis,af
terall,calledLeTempsdesHlicesorTheAgeofPro
pellers.

Theundulatinggrassstripprovidesahistoricallyaccurate
runway for most of the early aircraft. It is bordered on
thefarsidebydensegrovesoftrees,providingaverdant
background for the takeoffs and landings. With the sun
over your shoulder most of the day, it makes a perfect
settingforphotography.

Theonlydownsideisthattheflyingtakesplaceatquitesomedistanceandthecircuitisarrangedsuchthat
mostofthetimeoneisseeingtheundersideoftheaircraftastheyturninfrontofthecrowd.

Theflyingisorderedroughlychronologicallyandfeaturesanicemixofwarbirds,aerobaticmounts,general
aviation and civil transportation. Each of the segments features a thematic selection of aircraft and, al
thoughroughlysimilarfromyeartoyear,iscustomizedannually.Thisyearscoincidencewiththe70than
niversaryoftheNormandyinvasionledtoanemphasisonthateventamongtheWWIIeraaircraft.

Indeed,theflyingstartedoffwithanairdropfromaDC3(C47).FourSkytrains(orDakotas)werefeatured
duringtheday,althoughnonewereinmilitarymarkings.AllofthosewereevidentlybusyatotherDDay
events. Next was a flyover by aircraft from the French Navy: two Super Etendards, two Rafales and a
Morane Paris. The Rafales simulated a buddy refueling flight then put on a short tactical demonstration,
followed by the pair of Etendards and
the Morane Paris. And then it was time
totakeatripbacktothefirstdecadeof
powered flight as two Moranes and a
Blriot took off and performed lazy ma
neuvers in the sky. The comparison to
thepreviousjetflightswasanimpressive

displayoftheamazingtechnologicalad
vances in aeronautical engineering that
haveoccurredinthelastcentury.ThenitwasontotheFirstWorldWar,withadozenperiodaircraftjoin
ingupforamassflyby,followedbyaspiriteddogfightbetweentheRedBaronsFokkerTriplaneandanRAF
SE5. The historical sequence was interrupted by an aerobatic performance by the Patrouille Reva flying
threefuturisticAcroEzaircraft.

World War II featured the Luftwaffes Junkers 52s and Storch aircraft and a segment honoring the Nor
mandieNiemenSquadron:FreeFrenchfighterswhofoughtontheeasternfrontflyingYak3sandYak11s.
TheBreitlingWingWalkers,perchedatoptwo brightorangeStearmansflyinginformation,providedan
otheraerobaticinterludebeforetheremainderoftheSecondWorldWarflights.Thesefeaturedcombina
tionsofliaisonaircraft,fighters,bombers,andtransports.Oddlyenough,arecreationoftheattackonPearl
Harbor came towards the end of the sequence. It featured a number of AT6 Texans in the place of the
Japaneseaircraft(althoughonehadbeenmodifiedandpaintedtolooklikeaZero).Althoughnotquitecor
rect,theactionwasfastpacedandincludedalotofpyrotechnicsonthegroundwithaP40takingoffdur
ingtheattack.

atthismeetingintheF8FBearcat,retiringatthetopofhisform.

ABoeing737andATR42airlinerflewpastinformation,withthe737returningforanumber
of passes including a simulated landing with gear down and a lastminute highpower go
around. The Patrouille Cartouche Dor, composed of flight instructors from the Arme de
l'Air,celebratestheir25thanniversarythisyear.FlyingthreeTB30Epsilons,thisteamputon
aperfectdemonstrationofcloseformationflying.TheVietnamWarwasnext,featuringanA
1SkyraiderandT28Fennecflyinggroundattacksimulations.Theendofmilitarypropeller
drivenaircraftandthetransitiontojetswasbeautifullypresentedbytheHawkerFlight.This
sawaSeaFuryflyingintandemwiththeHunter,bothstreamingsmokefromtheirwingtips
andkeepinginperfectsynchronybeforesplittingupandputtingonimpressivesoloperform
ances.

NosoonerhadtheyendedthanaFrenchAirForceRafalecamescreaminginforalowphoto
pass. He followed this entrance with a series of amazing aerobatic maneuvers, the
smokewindersonhiswingtipsclearlymarkinghispaththroughthebynowbrightbluesky.
Hisfinalhighspeedpasspulledanicebitofvaporoutofthemoistair.

OnSunday,thePatrouilledeFranceperformed,butwewereonlyabletoattendonSaturday.
Nevertheless,wewereabletowatchthePatrouilleBreitlingperformintheirL39stoclose
theshow.

Allinall,itwasamemorableday,spanningoveracenturyofaviation.Althoughnotalways
exactlyhistoricallycorrect,andfeaturinganumberofreplicaaircraft,itcapturedtheessence
oftheevolutionofflightandwasahugesuccess.Itclearlyreflectedthelargeamountofef
fort that went into presenting a cohesive show, interspersed with enough aerobatic flying
and modern military tactical demos to provide entertainment beyond the warbird enthusi
asts.

endaryMirageF1,wasthehostforthisyearsRecceMeet.

The roots of the reconnaissance or more commonly used term Recce


Meetaregoingbackto1956atLahr(Germany)werethefamousRoyalFlash
reconnaissance competition was born. The idea was to bring NATO Recce
unitsforanannualchallenge.

Thescenariowasandisalsointhefuture,tostudyandpracticetheintegra
tion of reconnaissance, to practice mixed fighter operations in both strike
andreccerolesagainstgroundandairborneassetsandexercisesdesignedto
simulatecurrentalliedoperations.

ThisyearseditionbroughttwoEuropeansquadrons(SpainsAla12withtwoF18fromTorrejonandfrom
Greeces348MirawithtwoRF4EPhantomfromAndravida)toMontdeMarsan,alongsidetheirFrench
counterpartsfromseveralsquadronsincludingMirage2000sandRafales.Theywerefacingacontinuous
warexerciseunderarealisticbattlescenarios,andtestingtheirskillsonthreedifferenttypesofmissions:
1. Isolatedmissionswithspecificrecceobjectives
2. CombinedAirOperationswitheveryplayersonthespot
3. ParticularReccechallengeswithbestsensorsavailable

Looking back in time then we can see the French Air Force had a huge benefit from all these exercises.
Manyoftheirairoperationsandoverseasdeployments(Lebanon,Senegal,Mali,Liberia,IvoryCost,Af
ghanistantonameafew)confirmthehighleveloftheFrenchAirForcesexpertisegained.Uptonow
theMirageF1wasonthefrontline:asalowlevelbomber,airtogroundattackorinthereccerole,theMi
rageF1wasthereliableworkhorseinmanymissions.

On10thofApriltheER22/33Savoie,flewitslastRecceMeetmissionwiththeMirageF1CR.Duringthe
Recce Meet there were four Mirage F1s in bases paint shop. French Air Force presented these special
paintedMirageF1son12thofJunetoinvitedphotographers.

In2013wehadaveryrareopportunitytovisitRamexDelta,atAirBase125Istres,andlearnabouttheMirage
2000NandabouttherichhistoryoftheLaFayetteSquadron.Wewereverymuchimpressedbyourvisit,and
madefurtherenquiriesforanothervisitfor2014tolearnmoreabouttheRafale,theArmedel'airslatest
multirolefighteraircraft.

In February 2014, we received our invitation to visit Base Aerienne 118, (BA 118) Colonel Rozanoff in Montde
Marsan85milessouthofBordeaux,withourvisitscheduledforJune18,2014.Nowallwehadtodoistomakeourflight
andtransportationarrangements.

UponourarrivalatCharlesdeGaulleAirportinParisviaFinnairflightAY879fromHelsinkiweproceededtotheairporttrainstation
onlytofindoutrightbeforeboardingtimeourtraintoBordeauxhadbeencancelledduetoarailroadworkersstrike.Eventually,
afteronehourand10minutetaxiridetoMontparnasseTrainStationinPariswewereabletocatchatraintoBordeaux.Althougha
setback,wewerestillabletogettoourhotelneartheairbaseintimetorestandbereadyforournowtwodayvisitatBA118.

Yearslater,duringWorldWarTwo,theGermanstookoverthenewrunawayoftheLandesFlyingClubundertakinglargescalework
tobeabletohostin1943theJunkers290whichwasintendedtolocatealliedshippingconvoys.AftertheliberationofFrance,a
permanentrunwayandvastgroundinstallationswasleftbehindbytheLuftwaffe.In1945theFrenchMinistryofAircreatedthe
Centredexperiencesaeriennesmilitaires(CEAM),commandedbyColonelRozanoff.

SoonaftertheCondorleftweheardtheloudscreamingroarofseveralRafalesoverhead,andastheybroke
formationwetookimagesoftheirlanding.WealsoobservedanAlphajetandaCasa235land.Wehada
greatviewoftheRafalesunderthesunshadesasthepersonnelwereinspectingthemaftertheirlandings,
preparingthemforflightandthepilotsgettingreadyforadditionalflights.Laterontheday,wemovedfora
slightlybetterviewpointfortakeoffsandlandingsacrossfromthetower.WesawseveraloftheRafalestake
offfortheirpracticemissions,andtheCasadeparting.AbrightlypaintedredandwhiteEurocopterEC120B
Colibrihelicopterthatflewbyusseveraltimes.Additionally,wewerealsoveryluckytoseefourMirageF1s
takingoffandland.Theirtimewasjustaboutup,willbeofficiallyretiredinJuly,toseeandheartheF1stake
offandlandwasarealbonus.

nextdayformore!

The

DecadesaftertheWWII,in1964,thebasebecamethebackboneofFrenchdeterrencewhentheMirageIV
withtheAN11nuclearbombwasdeclaredoperational.In1958,acontrolanddetectioncenter(CDC)was
created.

BaseAerienne118islocatedinLandes,intheAquitaineregion,northofMontdeMarsan.Thebasecovers
five municipalities (Mont de Marsan, UchacqetParentis, CampetetLamolre, SaintPierreduMont and
SaintAvit).

AfterthereorganizationduetotheDefenceandNationalSecurity2008WhitePaper,BA118becameatype
1DefenceBase(largesttype1baseinthecountry).Terminationofthespecialammunitionfacilitiesatthe
baseputanendto50yearsofnuclearhistory.Closingofotherairbasesthroughoutthecountrycontrib
utedtofurthergrowthofBA118.

In 2011, 25 Mirages F1s arrived at the base from Reims belonging to reconnaissance squadron ER 2/33,
"Savoie". At the same time, the capabilities of the Rafale Squadron EC 02.030 continued to increase. On
June25,2012Fighterregiment2/30NormandieNimenwasofficiallyreactivatedwiththeRafaleF3multi
roleaircraft.TodayBA118hostsmorethan50aircraft.Morethan3500menandwomenworkdailyatthe
airbase,andcontributetolocaleconomy.

OnJune18th,at11a.m.,wemetwithourescort,AspirantEmilieZiane,fromPublicAffairs,infrontofthe
base,andshegaveusourVisitorsbadges,andweproceededinhercarforourfirstdaysvisit.Oursched
ulethatdaywasforustophotographdailyoperationsoftheRafalesatthebase.Weweregivenaccessto
differentareasthroughoutthedaybytheramp,neartherunwayandonafieldacrossthetower,toexperi
encefirsthandandupcloselaunchingandrecoveryofaircraftflyingtrainingmissions.

Justaswesettledontopofanembankmentparalleltotherunway,wenoticedthataRussianAN124
100Condor,cargoplanewasslowlytaxiingforatakeoff.TheAN124Condor,istheworld'shighestgross
weightproductioncargoaircraft.ItwasararesighttotheseeCondortaketotheskies.Itmusthavebeen
emptyasitliftedmajesticallyofftherunwayaboutmidpoint.

LieutenantColonel Alexandre Richard welcomed us and introduced us to Lieutenant


ColonelYannShrekMalard,deputysquadroncommanderourguidefortheday.LtCol.
MalardisaRafalepilotwhospent3yearsasanexchangepilotwiththeUSAFflyingA10s
withthe75thFighterSquadronatMoodyAirForceBaseinGeorgia,includinga6month
tourinAfghanistan.

Shrektookusaroundthesquadronsheadquarterswherewevisitedtheoperationsroomandofficersclub.
OnthefirstfloorofthebuildingthereweretworoomsthatwereactingasasmallmuseumforNormandie
NiemenSquadron,fullofthesquadronshistoricalartefactsandmemorabilia.

Historicallyitisaverysignificantsquadron,andtheonlyonetofighttogetherwiththeSovietsuntiltheend
ofthewarinEurope.TodatedespiteideologicaldifferencestheystillretaintheirtiestoRussia.

OriginalSquadronflags,logbooks,decorations,historicalrecordsandpaintingscanbeseenintheserooms.

ThehistoryofNormandieNiemen

SixmonthsaftertheGermansinvadedtheUSSRinJune1941,talksaimedatclosercooperationbetween
FreeFranceandtheSovietUnionresultedinsettingupaspecialsquadronwithaninitialcoreof12fighter
pilots and 47 ground staff for service on the RussoGerman front. De Gaulle officially promulgated the
GroupedeChasse(FighterSquadron)GC3Normandie,on1September1942,withCommandantPouliquen
incommand.Theirofficialemblemwastwogoldenleopardsinaredshield,callsignRayakTheirtraining
flightsstartedonOctober14,withtheDewoitine520.

Lessthanamonthlaterthegroupconsistingof58peopletravelledbyrailtotheUSSRviaIraqandIran.On2
December,the"Normandie"arrivedinIvanovo,aSovietfighterbaselocated250kmnortheastofMoscow.
TheycompletedaperiodoftrainingontheYakovlevYak7bytheendofJanuary1943,whenCommandant
JeanTulasnetookcommandofthesquadron.Thesquadronbecameoperationalon22March1943.

GC3 fought in three campaigns. In their campaign with the Yakovlev Yak1 fighter, lasted until 5 October,
1943andsawcombatbetweenPolotnianiZavodandSlobodaandMonostirtchina.

TheirinitialaerialvictorywasovertwoFockeWulfFw190son5April,bySubLieutenantandLieutenantDu
randPrziosiwhoaccompaniedtwoRussianPe2divebombersaboveRoslav.BothPe2andthetwoYaks
returned after their mission without any battle damage. These were the first two victories of the group
"Normandie".BythetimeGC3relocatedtoTulaon6November1943,onlysixpilotsremainedfromthe

originalRegimentwhichhadaccumulated72aerialvictoriessincebecomingoperational.Intheirfirstyearon
thefronttheyclaimed86kills(77confirmed,9probables)and16enemyaircraftdamaged,forthelossof
25Yakfighters.

InMay26,1944,strengthenedduringthewinterbegantheirsecondseasonwithfourescadrille(squadrons):
Rouen,LeHavre,CherbourgandCaen.InMay1944the"Normandie"participatedintheskiesaboveDou
brovka,RussiaagainsttheGermansandalsointheBelarusdistrict.InJuly,theunitflewtoLithuaniaand
supportedtheSovietgroundoffensive,whichcrossedtheNiemenRiverJune23,1944.Asareward,Marshal
Stalin ordered a distinguished unit name to be added with Niemen, thus the regiment was known as
"NormandieNiemen" thereafter. On 16 October, the first day of a new offensive against East Prussia, the
regimentspilotsclaimed29enemyaircraftdestroyedwithoutloss.Bytheendof1944201killshadbeen
claimed.

14January1945sawtheNormandieNiemenstartitsthirdcampaign(fromDopenentoHeiligenbeil),concen
tratingintheEastPrussianpartoftheGermanReich,untiltheformalannouncementofvictoryintheeaston
9MaythedayafterVEDayinEurope.TheUSSRexpresseditsgratitudetotheregimentbyoffering37ofthe
unitsYak3fightersasagifttoFrance.Thepilotsreturnedtoaheroes'welcomeinParison20June1945.
OnlyoneoftheoriginalYak3survived,whichisonstaticdisplayatLeBourget'sMusedelairetdelespace
(AirandSpaceMuseum)northofParis.

Attheendofthesethreecampaigns,"NormandieNiemen"hadaveryimpressiveclaimtofame:

Theunitalsodestroyed27trains,22locomotives,twoEboats,(German:Schnellboot,orSBoot,meaning

Fourofitspilots,MarcelAlbert,MarcelLefvre,JacquesAndrandRolanddeLaPoype,becameHeroes
oftheSovietUnion.

Shortlyafter,wewenttothebriefingroomwherewemetwiththecommanderofEscadrilleSPA91Kurt
ashebriefedanotherpilotMelontheirtrainingmissionoftheday.Forthedaysmissiontheywerekind
enoughtohonouruswithourspecialmadeRafalepatchesontheirshoulders,fortheirflight.

SPA91badgerepresentsaflyingeagleholdinginitsclawsaskull.SPA91tracestheiroriginbacktoWWI.
CreatedonMarch21,1917atLuneville(MeurtheetMoselle)flyingtheNieuport24biplanefighteraircraft.

WefollowedKurtandMel,tothelockerroomwheretheyputtheirGsuitsonandpickeduptheirhelmets
prior to signing out for the mission in the operations room. Outside under shaded aircraft parking spots
there weretwo singleseat Rafales ready for take off. The pilots performed a walkaround of their aircraft
withtheirmechanicsbeforeclimbingtheladdertakingtothecockpitoftheirRafales.Afterafewminutes
taxingtotheendoftherunwaytheywerebothairborneinamatterofseconds.(Manyimagesonthefol
lowingpages.)

ShrekpointedoutthattheMirageF1CRfromreconnaissancesquadron2/33weregettingreadytogoouton
oneoftheirlastmissionsever,asnowtheywillbewithdrawnsoonafterourvisit.Theofficialwithdrawal
datefortheMirageF1willtakeplaceonJuly24.On13June,theMirageF1communitycelebratedthe100th
anniversaryofreconnaissance.LastflightoftheMirageF1willtakeplaceonJuly14,Bastilledayanditwillbe
aflybyoverParis.

Thiswasagreatopportunitytoseethesevenerableaircraftbeforetheyareretired.Weaskedforpermission
totakeacloserlookwewereallowedtogetrealclose,ascloseasonecangetwithoutactuallyflyinginone.
Wespentabout45minutestakingphotosofthem.Shrekindicatedthatourvisitwascomingtoanend,ashis
officialdaydutieswouldnowstart.

WealsolearnedaboutseveralheroicincidentsofGC3Normandiethattookplaceduringtheirdeployment
toRussia.OneofthemthatstoodoutformewastheclosebondthatdevelopedbetweentheFrenchpilots
andtheirRussianmechanics.
As the front lines wereshifting quickly the pilots often took their
mechanicsalongwiththeminthecrampedcockpit,sotheycanser
vicetheiraircraftnearbattlelines,butbydoingthistherewasonly
spaceforoneparachute.On15July1944CaptainMauricedeSeynes
took off with his Soviet engineer Chief Warrant Officer Bielozoud.
Shortlyaftertakeoff,thepilotrealizedthathehadafuelleak,and
theburstpipesprayedfuelintothecockpit.Thisforcedhimtore
turntotheairfield,beingblindedbythefuelandintoxicatedbythe
fumes,hetriedtolandseveraltimes,butinvain. CaptainSeynes
was ordered to bail out with the parachute, but that would leave
Bielozoud behind without a parachute to crash and die in the air
craft. Captain Seynes refused to leave his mechanic behind, and
triedtolandonceagain,buthecrashedintheattempt.Bothdiedin
thelanding,buthisrefusaltoleavehiscomradebehindandsacrific
inghisownlife,impressedtheSovietstaffgreatlyaswellastherest
oftheGC3.

SincetheendofWWIItheNormandieNiemenRegimentflewseveraldifferentaircraft,including(14)NC900
(AFockeWulf190,assembledinFrancebyS.N.C.A.C),GrummanF6F5Hellcat,BellP63CKingcobra,their
firstjetaircrafttheSE535Mistral,(licensedcopyofDHVampire),VautorIIN,MirageF1C,MirageF1CTand
then the Regiment on July 3, 2009 was disbanded, upon reactivation the Regiment received the Dassault
Rafale.

AfterourvisittotheMuseumwewenttoseeaRafaleinsideoneofthemaintenancehangars,andhada
chance to sit in one and had our photos taken with Shrek. After our photo session it was time for lunch.
ShrektookustotheCafeteriaonthebase.WecanconfirmthattheFrenchAirForcehasthebestmealsofall
the air forces we had visited over the years. After our pleasant lunch, we returned to the Squadron Club
Room,foracoffee/tea.

andintheairarrivingandpracticingfortheshow.Forthemedia,includingusitwasalsoagood opportunitytosetupinterviewswithsomeofthe
Frenchperformers.OnSaturday,June21stwasbyinvitationonly,forspecialguestssuchastheMinisterofDefenceandhighrankingairforcestaff,family
membersandmediaonly.Fromthemediaperspectivethistypeofsetispreferable,anditwasextremelywellorganized.

TheflyingdisplayrepresentedtherichhistoryofthearmedelairwithaircraftsuchasMS317,Morone406,Yak3oftheNormandieNiemenfame,Dewoitine
520,DassaultFlamant,Nord2501NoratlasC47,FougaMagister,AlphaJet,Epsilon,Transall,Casa,C135,MirageF1,Mirage2000andtheRafale.Thestaticdisplaywas q u i t e
extensive(seelayoutbelow,Zones3,4,8and9)thatdisplayedseveralotherFrenchaircraftdisplayedfrompastandpresent,includingtheJaguar,MirageIII,MirageIV(nose),Mi
rage V, Xingu and Fokker 100. as well as F16s of the Belgian Air Force. A separate area Zone 2 was set aside for helicopters that included a RAF Puma, Eurocopter AS 532 Cougar
[82+01]fromtheLuftwaffe,andtheEurocopterTigeramongothers.

Oneofthe highlights ofthedaywastheRamexDeltaflyingtheirMirage2000Nwithatwoshiproutinethatdemonstratestheirmanoeuvrability,capabilityandprecisionformationflying.


OtherhighlightswerethesingledisplaysoftheRafalefromthearmedelairandtheRoyalAirForceTyphoon,eachdemonstratingtherawpowerofthelatestfightergeneration.

ThearmedelairalsodemonstrateditscapabilitiestoprojectitsforcesanywhereintheglobewithaflybysimulatingairrefuellingoftwoRafalesbyaC135.Therewasaveryimpressiveparachute
jumpdemonstration,aswell,jumpingfromtwotransportsC160andCasa,fillinguptheskywithairbornecommandos.

ThroughouttheshowtherewereperformancesofaerobaticteamsfromFranceandabroad:FrecceTricolorifromItaly,
PatrullaguilafromSpain,PatrouilleSuissefromSwitzerland,PatrouilledeFrance,CartoucheDor,EquipedeVoltigeand
BreitlingJetTeamisthelargestcivilianaerobaticdisplayteaminEurope,basedinDijon,France.

Thelayoutoftheshowresembledatriangle,ascanbeseentotheleft.ThebestviewwasfromtheVIPsection,astheflight
lineviewwasessentiallyblockedbythehighembankmentsthatseparatedtheapronsandtaxiways.Assuchitwasalmostim
possibleformostofthevisitorstoseetheflightlineactionontherunway,unlesstheywereinorneartheVIPareaorclimbedon
thetopoftheembankmentsnearZone8.However,theactualperformanceswerevisiblethroughoutthebase,mindyouabit
farforgoodphotography.Onerequiredalonglens,500600mmforrelativelygoodcloseupsoftheperformershowever,there
wasalotofheathaze,evenataclosedistanceitaffectedthesharpnessofimages.ThesmokemadebytheItalianteamdis
persedveryslowlytoo,nothelpingthesituationwithphotography.ItwasveryhotandhumidonSunday,andseveralaircraftformed
largevapourcloudsaroundthemastheyperformed!Therewerealotofvendorsfromsquadronsofferingpatches,tshirtsandother
souvenirs.Foodandrefreshmentsincludingbeerwasreadilyavailable.OnSundayfreebottledwaterwasgivenoutbytheorganizerdue

andtheairforcepersonnelsfamiliesoverallwasmuchbetterwithsunnierskiesandindisplaystoo.

Overall,theairshowwasverygood,despiteourlackofknowledgeoftheFrenchlanguewehadnoprob
lemsbuyingrefreshmentsandfoodfromthevendors.WewouldhighlyrecommendtoanyonefromNorth
AmericatoattendsimilarairshowsinFranceheldatairbases,whereonecanseeaircraftnormallynotseen

AsyoucanseetheFoxOneisatthismeetinganditisretiringafter40yearsofservicearoundtheworld.Itis
agoodthing,sincetheArmedel'Airisamodernairforce,wearereplacingitwiththeRafale,whichper
formsalloftheMirageF1missionsmuchbetter.ItistherighttimefortheFoxOneretirement.

ASR:HowwasyourtransitionfromtheMirageF1totheAlphajetwithPatrouilledeFrance?

Athos5:Initiallyitiseasy,sinceintheairforcewelearnhowtoflyjetsintheAlphajet.Wejusthavetoget
reacquaintedwiththeaircraftwhenjoiningtheteam,andofcourselearnhowtoperformdifferentmanoeu
vresthatarethehallmarkofthePatrouilledeFrance.Withits2engines,theAlphjetisveryefficient.Ithas
greatmanoeuvrability,from+7Gsto4Gs.Iamveryproudtoflythisaircraft;itistherightplatformforthis
mission.
