Do I pray enough? Maybe the question is how much prayer is

really enough? There are monks in monasteries who pray for hours
each day in between the works that they do. I am not sure who
would be at the other end of the spectrum, that is, those who
seldom or never pray. I vaguely remember as a small child playing
in the pew at St. Mary Church in Parsons; I might have even had a
stuffed toy to pass the time as the adults participated in the Mass. I
suppose one could say that is where I learned the need to pray or
how to pray. No one ever told me how much I needed to pray in
order to 'fill the bill'.
So I suppose to answer the question we need to consider if the
quantity of prayer is really something we need to worry about. As I
write this, I have come across an article about a French saint
Madeleine Delbrl (1904-1964) who decided her vocation in the
world should be among the 'ordinary people'. We, the ordinary
people of the streets, believe that this street, this world, where God
has placed us, is our place of holiness. She saw herself as a
missionary without a boat, that is not traveling but crossing the
borders of faith to bear witness to the Gospel in friendship and
solidarity. What does this have to do with prayer? She called her
ministry the prayer of the agenda, that is, a heightened awareness
of the presence of God in all the ordinary activities of life, whether
meeting people or answering the phone. So if we say that prayer is
communicating with God, then it is not necessarily the amount of
time we pray but the fact that we ARE praying and keeping God in
our life. God will always be there.
